Ldy lip* is the team's best all-around player, as she can set, hit, dig and block. As well, Greer trained as the team's setter during the spring season, and she may see a lot of playing time at that slot. Three players returnfortheirsophomoreseason:Cherilyn Bright, a 5-11 middle hitter; Renee Ross, a 5-9 outside hitter and Jamie Runkle, a 5-7 outside hitter. All three Lady Tigers saw plenty of action as freshmen and Lucas-White expects these players to continue to make a major contribution to the squad. "Cherilyn sees the block very well and she can do a good job for us in the front row. I am looking for her to be more of a blocker this season and to gain more self confidence," said Head Coach Penny Lucas-White begins her second season at MSU Dynamic. That is what Memphis State head coach Penny Lucas-White believes her 1992 Lady Tiger volleyball team will be this season. "I like a game to be dynamic and I think that we have the caliber of athletes to be just that, dynamic." The Lady Tigers will be young again this season, as the team lost five players, including four starters (Kim Lemon, Alisande Cavanagh, Lori and Lisa Rembe) from the 1991 squad that finished 20-15. Lucas-White feels that the team's youthfulness could be an asset as there would be no tradition or any expectations for the team to live up to. As well, in her

Lucas-White. Ross started 25 of the 32 matches that she played last season. She averaged 2.0 kills per game and and had 229 digs to her credit, which ranked third on the Lady Tiger statistical charts. "Jamie was hampered with injuries last season but I hope we have got those physical problems worked out. She is one of those players that you can count on to do anything you ask her to do. If you need to tell her that you need to dig up a ball, she will do just that. If you need her to play in the back to pass the ball, you can count on her to do that," explained LucasWhite. Randolph, Runkle and Ross are the team's three dynamic passers. Lucas-White believes that if a team has consistent

opinion, the team will have nothing to lose and everything to gain. According to Lucas-White, lone senior Analise Navia will be the team's "mouthpiece." The 5-10 outside hitter was a walk-on last season and saw action in 34 of the team's 35 matches. She ranked as the team's second leading hitter (.227) and blocker (72 total blocks). "Analise is very vocal on the court. She is a real fighter and doesn't like to lose. We want her to be a leader because those qualities can become a chain reaction on the court." Sami Randolph and Amy Greer have been at Memphis State for two seasons. Randolph, a 5-7 backcourt and outside hitter, worked hard during the spring season. Lucas-White changed her swing, which has helped the southpaw become more effective at the net. Greer, a 5-11 outside hitter, has been a starter since arriving in Tiger Town. She led the team with a 2.70 kills per game average and 311 digs. According to Lucas-White, Greer

Junior Amy Greer, the team's top kill player in 1991

Junior Sami Randolph a southpaw can play up front or in the back passers that it can compete with anyone. "I think we will be able to compete because we can pass and we will be able to set our offense when we are receiving the ball," stated Lucas-White. "We will be a lot quicker and more athletic this season. I plan go into every game with little goals and if we accomplish more than that, I feel that it will help build our confidence." Four newcomers will help build the Lady Tiger program that has had five consecutive 20-win seasons. Setter Janice Neyens will play an important role for the Lady Tigers this season. The 5-8 Chandler, Ariz., native will replace two-year starter Cavanagh. Neyens, according to Lucas-White, is a very mature player who is very knowledgeable about the game. She led her Corona del Sol High School squad to two state runner-up titles and one state championship. As well, she was a first-team Central Region for 5A conference and a second-team East Valley selection her senior season. Jacqueline Mack is a 5-11 middle blocker, who hails from Birmingham, Ala. She is not only an excellent athlete but an outstanding student. While at Ramsay Alternative High School, she was a national honor society member and earned numerous scholastic achievement awards. She was the 1991-92 City Tournament MVP. Last year she was named the Player of the Year in Birmingham. She led her 1990-91 squad to that state championship and was named the MVP of that tourna-

ment. Mack earned all-city and all-state tournament team honors as a junior. Deidre Rowell will play at both the outside and middle hitter positions which will allow for versatility in the Lady Tiger offense. She was the area 15, Class 5A most valuable player and was named to the all-tournament team. Rowell was honored as her team's most valuable defensive player in 1990. That same season she was her team's best attacker and leading scorer. Monique Swaby hails from Miami, Fla. where she attended North Miami High School. The two-time, first team AllDade County selection averaged 27 kills per match. As a senior she was named the Dade County Player of the Year as she averaged 11 assists, four aces and five blocks per match.Swaby also earned first team all-state honors and was twice named her team's MVP. The Lady Tigers will be on the road much this season. The team will play only seven home matches besides the Graphic Systems Classic set for Sept. 11-12. The team will face such tough competitors as: Minnesota, Arkansas State, Bowling Green, Texas-Arlington and William & Mary. The 1992 schedule includes a home and away series with each of the five Great Midwest Conference squads (Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, St. Louis and Alabama at Birmingham).

Sophomore Renee Ross saw plenty of action as a freshman

Senior Alisande Cavnagh, Lori and Lisa Rembe and Kim Lemon capped off banner careers at MSU Forfirst-year Lady Tiger head coach Penny Lucas-White, the 1991 volleyball season was taking her first bungee jump. "I arrived just a few days before the players reported. The whole season was a learning experience for both the players and myself. However, I feel that we had a very successful season," said Lucas-White. She inherited a team that was coming off one of the most successful in Lady Tiger history. The 1990 MSU squad finished with a 30-9 record and was a semi-finalist at the Women's Invitational Volleyball Championships. However, Lucas-White would be without the services of Katherine Lehman, Sarah Tjelmeland, Rhonda Kottke and Marie Zwolinski. Lehman, Tjelmeland and Kottke all earned numerous honors during their four-year careers at MSU and all helped rewrite the Lady Tiger record books. Returning from that squad was senior setter Alisande Cavanagh, outside hitters Lisa Rembe, middle hitter Lori Rembe and Kim Lemon an outside and middle hitter. As well, Lucas-White had the services of Amy Greer, a 5-11 sophomore who had seen plenty of action her freshman season. Added to the Lady Tiger lineup were freshman Cherilyn Bright, a 5-11 middle hitter from Wheaton, III.; Renee Ross a 5-9 outside hitter from Marion, Iowa; Jamie Runkle, a 5-7 outside hitter from Peru, Ind.; and Lisa Bray, a 5-7 setter from Memphis, Tenn. The team opened the season at the Georgia Lady Bulldogs Invitational and was able to win its first match against

American University. However, its next two opponents, Georgia and Illinois State were too tough for MSU. The Lady Tigers came up empty handed at the Volleyball Monthly Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin. At the Saluki Invitational, MSU lost its opening match to hosting Southern Illinois. With a 1-6 record, the Lady Tigers regrouped their forces and got back on the winning track beating Ohio University and Illinois-Chicago to take second place honors at that tournament. The team played only eight home matches during the 1991 season. It opened its home schedule hosting the Graphic Systems Classic. After winning their opening match against Northeast Louisiana, the Lady Indians of Arkanas State pounded the Lady Tigers in three straight games to claim the championship title. Back on the road at the Wright State Invitational, MSU was finally able to get a .500 record (7-7). Despite winning its first two matches, hosting Wright State proved too much for MSU and again the Lady Tigers took second place at a tournament. The team see-sawed above and below .500 for most of the season. Competing for the first time in the Great Midwest Conference the Lady Tigers would have stiff competition with Cincinnati, St. Louis, DePaul, Alabama at Birmingham and Marquette. MSU managed to win its first two GMC matches over Cincinnatiand St. Louis. An experienced DePaulteam handed MSU its first conference loss, but the Lady Tigers got back on the winning track against Marquette. The team lost its final regular season conference match to Alabama at Birmingham. After that loss to UAB, MSU was 13-14 on the year. Wins over Rice and Mississippi got the Lady Tigers back over the .500 mark, and the rest of the season was smooth sailing for the Lady Tigers. Memphis State completed the regular season at the Connecticut Challenge where they brought home the championship trophy. During that two-day event, MSU beat Army, Connecticut and Virgina Commonwealth. With a 18-14 mark and Lucas-White feeling comfortable with a starting lineup which consisted of the Rembe twins, Cavanagh, Lemon, Analise Navia and Amy Greer, the Lady Tigers were ready to host the Great Midwest Championships. As the number three seed, MSU faced St. Louis in opening round action. It took only three games to advance to the semi-finals. Against UAB in the semi-finals, Lucas-White's frontline could not stop the powerful Lady Blazers and fell in three straight games. It was time for the squad to regroup for the final time. In the third place match, MSU easily mauled the Lady Bearcats of Cincinnati. Forthe fifth consecutive year the Lady Tigers finished with a 20-win season going 20-15. Alisande Cavanagh earned first team all-conference while Lori Rembe was second team allGMC. Cavanagh also earned GMC all-tournament laurels.

(jit*} Things like this are supposed to take time. But it didn't take much time for the Great Midwest Conference to make an impact on the national scene. The nation's newest NCAA, Division I conference, the Great Midwest celebrated its first season by sending a pair of teams to the semifinals of an NCAA Championship. The Saint Louis soccer team was the first Great Midwest squad to make the run at a national title. After earning the inaugural conference soccer championship in November, the Billikens advanced all the way to the national semifinal game before losing to eventual champion Virginia in overtime. Cincinnati's men's basketball squad provided the second shot at a national title. The Bearcats claimed the first men's basketball conference title en route to a run to the NCAA Final Four before falling to Michigan. It should not be a surprise the Great Midwest met with success. From its formation in November, 1990, the six member league (Alabama at Birmingham, Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Memphis State and St. Louis) has been tabbed with the "can't miss" label. "We've always known this was going to be a very good conference," commissioner Mike Slive said. "What we had no way of knowing was how quickly it would happen. Throughout our planning, we expected that we would be a high quality athletics conference. Having two teams reach the national semifinals brought that recognition quickly". The Great Midwest could quickly be recognized i n even more sports. Overall, the conference sponsors championships in 14 sports. In addition to soccer and men's basketball, the championship sports are volleyball, basketball, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and cross country for women along with baseball, golf, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and cross country for men. In fact, the Great Midwest already earned its first automatic qualification in volleyball. Its 1991 champion, UAB, advanced to the National Invitational Volleyball Championships (NIVC) in Dayton, Ohio as an automatic qualifier. For 1992, it has been recommended that the winner of the conference title get an automatic berth in the NCAA Championship field. There also was plenty of academic success. Five conference athletes earned GTE Academic Ail-American honors and several others were honored on the district level. Academic success should continue. The Great Midwest is committed to academic success for its student athletes and maintains stringent guidelines regarding initial and continuing eligibility. Great Midwest institutions are more than athletic rivals. The league is developing an academic consortium for all students enrolled in one institution to attend one or more of the other five while earning credit at the original institution. Consortium plans also include a visiting lecture series coinciding with athletic contests.

27

Slive, formerly a Chicago based attorney who specialized in sports law, sees more success on the horizon. By any standard, it would be hard not to call the 1991 volleyball season a success for the Great Midwest Conference. Before the nation's newest NCAA, Division I athletics conference even played its first volleyball match, the league was rewarded with it first automatic qualification to postseason play, a bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Championships. That bid is indicative of the quality of volleyball played in the Great Midwest Conference. In 1990, three league members were champions of their previous conference and two advanced to the NIVC. That depth of quality made for a thrilling first season of Great Midwest play. DePaul took the regular season crown with perfect 5-0 record in league play. The Blue Demons earned the top spot in the inaugural Great Midwest Conference Volleyball Championships November 22-23 in Memphis, Tenn. UAB finished second at 4-1 while Memphis State was third at 32. The inaugural championships provided two days of outstanding play, capped by UAB's five match victory over DePaul to earn the conference title and the trip to the NIVC in Dayton, Ohio. Coach Brenda Williams' Blazers opened a 2-0 lead winning 17-16 and 16-14 before the Blue Demons rallied. DePaul knotted the score at 2-2 with 15-9 and 1510 wins to set up the decisive fifth game. The final was close, with UAB claiming the match and the championship 15-13. The inaugural season was marked with several awards. DePaul's Susanne Fogarty earned honorable mention All-America and third team all-region honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVGA). Fogarty just missed becoming the first player in NCAA, Division I history to record 2,000 kills and 2,000 digs in her career. Fogarty finished with 2,134 kills and 1,950 digs. UAB's Danielle Reaves, who led the Great Midwest in hitting at .334, was second team all- region from the AVCA. Teammate Mellissa Cobb picked up all-tournament honors at the NIVC as the Blazers finished 33-10. DePaul coach Anna Marie Marassa was named regional coach of the year by the AVCA as well after leading her Blue Demons to a 32-7 record. The 32 wins and the .821 winning percentage are both school records. The Great Midwest also picked up some academic awards. Angie Showalter of Cincinnati and Suzie Johnson of UAB were first team GTE Academic All-District while Reaves of UAB was second team.

The roots of Memphis State date back to September 15, 1912, with the establishment and opening of the West Tennessee State Normal School, which provided for the training of primary and secondary education teachers. On July 1,1957, Memphis State achieved its status as a university and has since expanded its degree programs to serve a student population of over 20,000. Memphis State's campus covers 1,100 acres on four different sites with more than 100 buildings. The main campus is situated in a quiet residential section of Memphis. The campus is unique as it is not all brick and concrete that one may expect from a university in a city population of more than 900,000, but possesses many open fields trees and athletic facilities which create a park-like atmosphere. South campus, which use to be a veterans hospital was donated to the University. The Murphy Complex and married housing facilities located on south campus, opened in 1970. The primary purpose of Memphis State University is to advance learning. The University is dedicated first to the traditional ideals of learning by focusing its attention and efforts upon the creation, transmission and application of knowledge. Secondly, it is committed to goals that are utilitarian in preparing students to serve in a variety of profession and occupations, and in providing services to society for improving the quality of life and environment. Memphis State is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Various colleges, schools, departments and programs are accredited by their accrediting agencies. Memphis State University is comprised of six undergraduate colleges, The School ol Law and the Graduate School. The under-graduate colleges are the College of Arts and Sciences, The Fogelman College of Business and Economics, The College of Communication and Fine Arts, The

College of Education, The Herff College of Engineering and The University College. There are several special programs: Air Force, Army and Navy ROTC, Audiology and Speech Pathology, City and Regional Planning, International Studies, Nursing and Urban Studies. Overall, Memphis State University offers degrees in 19 bachelors (74 majors), 11 masters (62 majors), four doctoral (16 majors), one specialist (3 majors) and one professional academics program. However, there is more to university life than just academics. At Memphis State there are a variety of clubs, organizations, honor societies, special interest and service groups and other activities for students to become involved. For students interested in joining a social organization, there are 15 fraternities and 12 sororities. For those interested in the arts, there are various productions both theatrical and musical performed on one of the three stages at the Theatre Building. Memphis State also has its own art gallery. A good sweat can be worked up at the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Complex orthe MSU Field House. These two athletic complexes have such recreational facilities astennis, racquetball and handball courts, indoor and outdoor Olympic-size pools, basketball courts, an all-weather track, free-weight and Nautilus weightrooms. The recreation department sponsors a variety of intramural sports that students may participate in throughout the academic year. Memphis State also has organizations that are established for minorities such as the Black Student Association and the International Student Associations.

'••••••-.-Nat Buring Baseball Stadium

The Tiger athletic family has many places to call home at Memphis State University. In 1970, the Memphis State Athletic Department officially opened the Kennedy Sportsplex, a 140-acre complex located just south of the main campus. The complex serves asthe home of theTigerfootball, baseball andtrackteams and offers workout facilities for all MSU sports. Since that time, however, the facility has taken on a new name and is now called the Billy J. Murphy Complex. The complex was renamed in honor of former MSU head football coach and athletic director Billy J. Murphy. The main building at Murphy Complex features a 50-yard, indoor practice field with an artificial surface. This field is used for workouts when the weather prohibits outdoor practices and is also used by the baseball team for winter workouts. Also housed in the main building is a modern, well-equipped training room, a fully equipped weight training facility, the football equipment room, the football locker room, sauna and steam rooms and film and meeting rooms, as well as locker rooms for the baseball and track teams. Located behind the main building are four outdoor football fields, used for fall and spring practices. All of Memphis State's home baseball games are played at Nat Buring Stadium, a 2,000-seat facility adjacent to Murphy's main building. Recently lights and a new enclosed press box were added. Nat Buring will be the site of the 1993 Great Midwest Conference baseball tournament. Located next to the baseball stadium is Murphy Track, an eight-lane, polyurethane tartan surface track used by the Memphis State track teams for home meets. During the summer of 1991 Memphis State hosted the World Police and Fire Games. The track meet featured over 700 athletes from around the world. During the summer of 1992, MSU served as host of the Tennessee Sports Festival which featured athletes from around the state. Murphy Track will once again be the site of the Great Midwest Conference track and field championships. Other features of Murphy Complex include an Olympic indoor pool and golf driving range that is used by the Tiger golf teams. A 5,000 square-foot Novagrass artificial green was installed adjacent to the driving range in August of 1992. The green, which features four sand bunkers and a self-contained irrigation system, allows both men's and women's golf teams to practice their short games. The new weight room at Murphy Complex is a 9,000 square-feet, state of the art weight training facility. The weight room was completed in August of 1992 and houses a full-line of nautilus and free weight equipment. The Murphy Complex, recently remodeled, is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the country and offers the Memphis State athlete an excellent locale to increase his/her athletic ability. The 62,380-seat Liberty Memorial Stadium is the site of all Memphis State home football games as well as the Liberty Bowl post-season game. The stadium was recently renovated

66 in 1987with new sky-suites, located on the East side of the stadium, approximately 12,000 new seats, a new stadium club, new lighting system, the new playing surface, a new handicap seating area and numerous concession stands and restrooms facilities in the new sections. Memphis State's Tiger basketball team played their first season in 1991-92 at their new home, The Pyramid, which seats 20,142. Highlighting its contents is one of the finest locker room facilities in all of basketball, including the NBA. This 2,200 square-foot room is equipped with a lounge and team meeting area, dressing room, training room and storage area. In the dressing room each player has his own personal vanity and locker, while the lounge area is furnished with couches, a 35-inch color television, a stereo sound system and a color pull-down projection screen. It also has an entrance way that includes a stainless steel door and a lighted MSU logo that hangs on a marble wall. The Tigers made good use of their new home as they went on to have the nations' largest attendance increase (5,207) and was ranked eighth overall in per game attendance (16,142) last season. The Pyramid, sits on the bank of the Mississippi River and is visible to motorists as they cross the Tennessee -Arkans as bridge into Memphis. It will be the siteof this year's Great Midwest Conference Men's and Women's basketball tournament. Echles field is the home of the Memphis State soccer team. The 900-seat facility is located adjacent to the Health Physical Education and Recreation Building and received a $20,000 facelift over the summer. The renovations include a new electronic Scoreboard, concrete slabs for bleachers, and the purchase of additional seats. The Memphis State women's basketball and volleyball teams play all home events at the 3,000-seat MSU Field House. Situated in the heart of MSU's main campus, the Field House is equipped with locker room and training facilities for the five Lady Tiger athletic teams. The Field House received an $80,000 renovation this past August. The gym itself was completely painted and entry ways were improved with lighting and a totally different design. Behind the Field House is a track and adjacent to the Field House are 10 laykold tennis courts. However, the men's and women's tennis teams host their opponents on the HPER courts. There are 21 laykold-surfaced courts which allow the Tiger tennis teams to host multiteam tournaments. The courts were resurfaced in 1991. Also available at the HPER Building are two full gymnasiums which are used by women's basketball during the offseason and the women's volleyball team. Also available for the women's athletic teams are a 16-machine Nautilus weight room with numerous Lifecycles and stationary bikes, as well as a Stepmaster, and a free weight room with a Universal weight station. The men's and women's golf teams practice at numerous courses around Memphis.

Memphis on the Mississippi is named forthe Egyptain city of the same name on the Nile. The name means "Place of good abode." Memphis was founded in 1819 on the fourth Chicasaw Bluff overlooking the Mississippi. The original town was planned and laid out by three prominent Tennesseans, James Winchester, John Overton and future President, Andrew Jackson. They saw their city becoming as great as its ancient namesake on Nile. The founders wanted their city to be more than a profitable land venture, though. In plotting out the town, they made certain that it would contain ample room for parks and stipulated that the land along the scenic river bluffs sould be a "public promenade." Their legacy: a stunning panorama of the mighty Mississippi. Memphis is known as the "Nations Distribution Center," "The Cotton Capital of the World" and 'The Hardwood Capital of the Nation." Today's Memphis presents a full spectrum of sports, visual and performing arts, and special events for 981,500 citizens. Located in the heart of Mid-America, Memphis is accessible from all parts of the country. Memphis International Airport is served by eight major air carriers and is a hub for Northwest Airlines. It is also the home of Federal Express, the nations largest package carrier. In addition, 12 excellent U.S. highways and Amtrak also serve the city. The Mid-South Fairgrounds includes the home of Memphis State's football team, the 62,380-seat Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, and also the site of one of the top post-

season football classics in America, the Liberty Bowl. The Fairgrounds also houses the Mid-South Colisem, an 11,200seat arena which is the home of Memphis' newest professional sports team the Memphis Rivermen of the Central Hockey League. Tim McCarver Baseball Stadium is the home of the Memphis Chicks, a AA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
