FIRST MEETING WITH CINCINNATI ON DECK With just six regular season games left on the conference slate, it may seem odd to be playing a conference opponent for the first time, but that’s the case with Wednesday night’s meeting with Cincinnati for the Tigers. The two teams have not met since Jan. 30, 2005 when both teams were members of Conference USA. This is the 44th meeting between the two teams. Memphis leads the overall series 30-13, but Cincinnati won the last meeting with Memphis, 58-56, in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers are 10-7 all-time in Cincinnati. IT’S DEFENSIVE Cincinnati sports the nation’s 35th-stiffest defense, allowing just 59.0 ppg. But facing a defense that tough is something Memphis has seen already this year. To date, Memphis has played 10 of their 24 games against eight teams from the top 50 defenses in the country: 1. Connecticut................ 2 games.....................48.1 15. Texas A&M................ 1 game......................56.6 19. Texas......................... 1 game......................57.3 22. UALR......................... 1 game......................57.5 29. Louisville................... 1 game *..................60.4 47. USF........................... 1 game *...................60.5 * Still one remaining game on 2013-14 schedule ** Two games remaining on 2013-14 schedule Memphis has scored 60 or more points on one of those defenses listed above just four times, and just once in a win (a 74-73 overtime win over Rutgers). LOOKING TO SNAP STREAK The Tigers have lost three straight games coming in to Wednesday night’s match-up at Cincinnati. They are trying to avoid tying their longest losing streak of the season (four games), which came against UALR, Texas A&M, Syracuse and Texas. GETTING ON THE GLASS Memphis has been out-rebounded by their conference foes in seven of the last eight games. The one game in there where the Tigers were not out-rebounded was against UCF, where the two teams were even. The last time Memphis out-rebounded an opponent was on the road at UCF, where a +3 rebounding margin helped Memphis to a 36-point win. HEARN PUTS UP ANOTHER 20-POINT EFFORT Ariel Hearn scored the Tigers’ last 10 points in the game at Temple and finished with 22 points on 8-for17 shooting. That 20-point night was her ninth this season, but her first since Jan. 11th (at UCF). That was also her 20th game in double-digits for the Tigers this year. For her Memphis career, she has scored 20 or more points 13 times. She comes in to Wednesday night’s game at Cincinnati with 859 career points (41 shy of 900) in 56 career games (53 starts). Hearn is scoring a bunch of her points this year from beyond the three-point line compared to last season. Last year, the freshman was running the point and scored most of her points on the drive and at the free-throw line. This year, she is spotting up from beyond the arc more often, scoring 33.8 percent of her made field goals from beyond the arc. She is just two triples shy of moving into the single season top 10 (she has 50 this year) and already ranks ninth in career three-point field goals made with 77. 2012-13 2013-14

WILDER-COCHRAN LOOKING FOR A PAIR OF HEARN’S FRESHMAN RECORDS Melissa McFerrin has a true freshman running the point for a second straight season. Last year, Ariel Hearn was pressed in to duty when Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir broke her hand. Hearn ended up finishing with 109 assists, a new Memphis freshman record, and also set a new freshman record for single season freethrows made (109). Wilder-Cochran is on pace to potentially rewrite both of those records. The Hoover, Ala., native has 98 assists and has made 85 free-throws with six regular season games remaining. Only two other freshmen in Memphis history have dished out 100 or more assists in a season. The first was Ruth Ann Forsythe in 1983-84. The second was Ariel Hearn, last season. Wilder-Cochran has 98 assists against 84 turnovers. WILLIAMS POSTS ANOTHER DOUBLE-DIGIT GAME Freshman guard/forward Taylor Williams knocked down back-to-back three-point field goals in the loss at Temple in the second half. That pushed her to 10 points in the loss, her third double-digit scoring night of the season. Over one third (36.7 %) of her made buckets in her freshman campaign have come from beyond the arc. She is 18-for-60 (30.0 %) and has attempted 39.7 percent (60 of her 151 shots) from three-point range. FUQUA-BEY LOOKING FOR 400TH POINT Sophomore forward Asia Fuqua-Bey is two points shy of hitting the 400 point barrier. She has 398 career points through 56 games heading in to the Cincinnati game. Fuqua-Bey moved in to the Memphis starting lineup as a freshman last year just 14 games in to her Tiger career. She has now started 43 straight games. She has been the leading rebounder for Memphis in five of the last nine games, including two of the last three games. She has 350 career rebounds (6.3/game) and already has two more rebounds this year (176) than she had all of last season (174). Almost 60 percent (59.7) of her career rebounds have come off the defensive glass. ROWSER BACK TO THE STARTING LINEUP Redshirt freshman Mooriah Rowser started the first 13 games of the season for Memphis. After a start against UCF on Jan. 29th, she slid out of the starting line-up for games at Rutgers and against USF. She was back in the lineup on Sunday at Temple after she had averaged 10.8 ppg over the five game stretch from UConn (Jan. 22) to USF (Feb. 5). But the Maryland native had a tough shooting night in Philly, going 2-for-11 from the field and 0-for3 from three-point range and finishing with four points, her lowest-offensive output since a two-point game against Houston. So far this season, she has scored 206 points (8.6 ppg), ranking second on the team in scoring. POINTS IN THE PAINT The Tigers’ leading three scorers are all guards. Ariel Hearn averages 17.4 ppg, Mooriah Rowser averages 8.6 ppg and Breigha Wilder-Cochran averages 8.5 ppg. The Tigers’ highest-scoring post is sophomore Asia Fuqua-Bey, with 8.0 ppg, then senior Pa’Sonna Hope and her 7.3 ppg. Memphis is trying to get Hope comfortable coming off the bench and avoiding foul troubles. But after scoring double-digit points in four straight games (UConn, at SMU, at UCF and vs. Rutgers), the senior has gone scoreless twice (missing most of the Houston game due to illness) and averaging 2.3 ppg over the last six games. Hope’s points decrease is mirrored by her teammates. Memphis has given up more points in the paint that they have scored in six straight games. SEARCHING FOR A STARTING LINEUP After going through the first 14 games of the year

HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN

Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis

At Memphis: 106-81 (.567) Career: 156-151 (.508)

McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey

Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

with just three different starting lineups, the Tigers have had four different lineups over the last four games, either due to injury, disciplinary issues or just trying to get a hot hand into the lineup. That’s given Memphis seven different starting lineups this season. HEARN LOOKING FOR 100TH CAREER PICK Ariel Hearn is known as a scorer. Last year, she was known for her ability to drive the ball and score through contact, this year, it’s for her work from the three-point line. The next part of her game to get some attention will be defense. She enters the Cincinnati game with 95 career steals, five shy of the century mark. HOPE SETS CAREER MARK IN REBOUNDS; MOVES INTO CAREER TOP 10 IN BLOCKED SHOTS Senior post Pa’Sonna Hope finished the USF game with a career-high 16 rebounds, including nine offensive, on Wednesday night. Hope also had three blocked shots in the loss, which moved her in to the career top 10 at Memphis. In her just second season with the Tigers, Hope now has 56 blocked shots, which puts her in a tie for ninth in the Memphis record book with Kitty Allen (199397). Hope has been coming off the bench for the Tigers in the last two games, giving Memphis some rebounding from the bench and helping to keep her foul numbers down. DOUBLE DIGIT BOARDS FOR FUQUA-BEY Sophomore forward Asia Fuqua-Bey finished the game at Rutgers with 10 rebounds, her fourth double-digit rebounding effort of the season and her second against Rutgers. POWELL PROVIDING PUNCH FROM THE BENCH Sophomore post Courtney Powell has seen her minutes increase in the last few games. After playing a career-high 22 minutes in the game at Louisville (she eventually was one of three post players to foul out of the game), she played 17 minutes on the road at Rutgers, finishing with five rebounds. In the last three games, she is averaging 4.7 rebounds a night.

OVERTIME? SURE, WHY NOT? Memphis has played five overtime games already this season, including two double-overtime games. The Tigers are 1-1 in double overtime (both road games) and are 2-1 in overtime games with just one extra session (2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road). Memphis is now 13-12 in overtime games in school history and is 7-3 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. Wisconsin holds the NCAA record for overtime games in a season with seven in 1999, FYI. FIRST WIN OVER RANKED OPPONENT Memphis brings a three-game winning streak in to Wednesday’s match-up with UConn after upsetting No. 23 Rutgers, 74-73, in overtime in the Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. That win was the first over a ranked team for Memphis since a 64-58 win over No. 20 DePaul on Jan. 26, 2003 (also a conference game). The win improved Memphis to 2-0 all-time against teams ranked No. 23 in the country and was the program’s 19th win over a ranked opponent in 93 tries. ANOTHER FIRST FOR THE SEASON The win over Rutgers was the first time this season the Tigers trailed at the half and came back for the

UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

victory. At one point, Memphis trailed by 11 points in the first half. That’s the biggest margin of deficit erased by Memphis this season. The previous best was 10 in the first game of the season against East Tennessee State. Memphis is 1-8 when trailing at the half this season.

HOPE MISSES BULK OF HOUSTON GAME Senior Pa’Sonna Hope tried to play through illness when Memphis hosted Houston, but could manage just six minutes before the Tiger coaching staff put her on the bench. The single-digit minutes were the fewest of her career and were part of a four-game, double-digit scoring streak getting snapped against Houston. FUQUA-BEY EARNS REPEAT AMERICAN ATHLETIC WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Asia Fuqua-Bey was named to The American’s weekly honor roll after hitting the game-winning freethrows in overtime vs. No. 23 Rutgers and then leading the Tigers with 18 points in the win over Houston. It was the second time this season for Fuqua-Bey to earn a spot on the American Athletic Conference honor roll. She was also named to the honor roll Dec. 16th.

WINNING CLOSE GAMES Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has been telling her young team that Memphis wins close games.
