Heading Into the Opening Round of the C-USA Tournament:

In its final regular-season matchup, Memphis dropped a 2-1 decision to SMU in Dallas, Texas. Sophomore midfielder Liam Collins played a free-kick into the box that was deflected into the air, but fellow-sophomore Mark Sherrod was able to get a head on the ball and send it to freshman Lewis Ellis. The forward spun and flipped the ball over SMU goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra to put the Tigers on the board in just the second minute of the game. The Mustangs responded with a pair of goals exactly one minute apart. Juan Castillo deflected a pass from the Memphis defense and slid past U of M goalkeeper Conor Hurley to score the first goal. SMU’s Ben Hill gathered a ball that deflected off of the referee and played a through-ball to Arthur Ivo. Ivo took advantage of the one-versusone opportunity and put the Mustangs up 2-1. Entering the contest, Mark Sherrod trailed former Memphis-great Sean Frasor by a point for the most points in a single season. The striker moved into a tie with Frasor on the assist on Ellis’ goal.

Player Spotlight

Lewis Ellis Freshman Forward Ellis scored his second goal of the season, when he knocked in a pass from Mark Sherrod in just the second minute of the contest against SMU. He becomes the fourth Tiger to record double-digit points on the season with ten points on two goals and six assists. The six assists trails only sophomore Liam Collins for most assists on the team. The Wales, United Kingdom-native has played in every contest this season, with over 900 minutes of gametime, and started 14 of those matches.
