Heading Into the Match-Up With South Carolina:

Memphis used a goal from a shoeless Mark Sherrod to defeat previously-unbeaten No. 18 Bradley in Peoria, Ill. Sherrod lost his shoe while making a run on the counter-attack. Freshman Wil Linder found Sherrod, who rocketed a shot past goalkeeper Brian Billings with his shoeless left foot. Conor Hurley earned his second shutout of the season with the help of his defense. The Tiger’s defense held Bradley without a single shot on goal. The Tigers dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the Purple Aces of Evansville following a golden goal by Dylan Terry with under 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime. Evansville jumped out to the early 1-0 lead on a goal by Ryan Stallings, but Memphis would answer. Linder found Sherrod making a run to the left post. Sherrod finished with a tap in. Memphis earned runner-up for the tournament and Sherrod, Linder and Cody McCoy were name to the AllTournament Team.

Impact Players

• Out-of-the-Gate Memphis is 5-1-1 on the season, its third-best seven-game start in program history. The Tigers started with 6-1 records in 1992 and 2006. The Tigers began 8-1 and 7-1 in those two seasons, respectively.

Memphis Tigers

• Shoeless Sherrod Mark Sherrod scored a rather unusual goal against No. 18 Bradley. With Bradley controlling the ball deep in its offensive side, Memphis was able to gain possession of the ball and find Wil Linder in the middle. Linder broke free on the counter-attack. As Sherrod started to make a run up the side, he came out of his shoe. Linder found the streaking Sherrod, who beat Bradley’s goalkeeper with a rocketed shot using his shoeless foot as his plant foot. • Top-20 Takedown The Tiger’s used Mark Sherrod’s goal in the 81st minute to defeat the previously unbeated, 18th-ranked Bradley Braves. The win marked Memphis’ first win over a ranked opponent since 2009, when it beat No. 23 Drake, 4-3. • Others Receiving Votes Memphis is now receiving votes in three national polls, NSCAA, Soccer Times and College Soccer News. Memphis first started receiving votes in the Sept. 12 Soccer Times poll. The Tigers were last ranked in one of the major polls for the week of Oct. 15, 2007, when they were ranked No. 25. • Shooting an Unloaded Weapon In the Tigers’ last four games, against Evansville, No. 18 Bradley, Wisconsin and Illinois-Chicago, Memphis allowed a total of 37 shot attempts. Even more impressively, the Tigers held their opponents to a total of eight shots on goal in those contests. Actually, Memphis held No. 18 Bradley without a single shot on goal in Friday’s 1-0 victory. The backline of senior Thomas Shannon, juniors J.J. Greer and Jordan Johnson and freshman Chandler Gagnon have denied opponents good scoring opportunities. • Unbeaten Streak Comes to End The Evansville Purple Aces put an end to the eight-game unbeaten streak the Tigers were riding. Dating back to the end of 2010, Memphis was 7-0-1 entering the contest against Evansville, who won, 2-1, in double-overtime at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic. • Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic Runners-Up The Tigers ended the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic with a 1-1-0 record and earned a second place finish due to the 1-0 defeat of No. 18 Bradley, who also ended the tournament 1-1-0. •Trio Named to HGPC All-Tournament Team Three Tigers, Mark Sherrod, Wil Linder and Cody McCoy, were named to the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classis All-Tournament Team following Memphis’ runner-up performance. Sherrod tallied two goals, including one shoeless, over the weekend. Linder assisted on both of Sherrod’s goals. McCoy was instrumental in the Tigers ability to hold No. 18 Bradley without a shot on goal in Friday’s 1-0 win over the previously unbeaten Braves.

• Scouting No. South Carolina Over the past weekend, South Carolina hosted the Gamecock Classic, dropping a 2-0 decision to Brown and defeating High Point, 2-1. The Gamecocks 2-4-2 record is deceiving, as they have played a strong schedule that includes three ranked opponents (Charlotte, Bradley and Brown) and one ACC opponent, Clemson. • Facing the Ranked Gauntlet The Tigers have games scheduled this season against three teams currently ranked in the top 25 of the NSCAA poll: No. 9 UCF (Oct. 29), No. 22 Kentucky (Oct. 23) and No. 24 UAB (Oct 19). Memphis won at then No. 18 Bradley, 1-0, on Sept. 16. • Challenging the Pollsters Following Memphis’ 1-0 win at No. 18 Bradley on Friday evening, the Tigers improved their all-time record to 11-32-4 versus ranked opponents. Prior to the victory, the U of M had lost its last four contests against ranked opponents, with the last victory coming against No. 23 Drake (09-13-09), 4-3. • Head-to-Head: Evansville Memphis dropped its first game of the year, 2-1, to Evansville, bringing the alltime series record to 3-6-1. The loss snaps the Tigers’ three-game winning streak against the Purple Aces. • Head-to-Head: No. 18 Bradley Memphis used a goal from sophomore Mark Sherrod, who scored the goal after his left shoe flew off while running, to upset previously unbeaten No. 18 Bradley, 1-0. The win is the Tigers’ first victory in five tries against the Braves, bringing the overall record to 1-2-2. • Regional Charts Memphis dropped No. 9 in the NSCAA Midwest Regional Rankings for the week of September 20, 2011, despite beating previously second-ranked Bradley. The Tigers did drop a 2-1, double-overtime decision to Evansville, previously No. 10. Memphis climbed into the poll on Aug. 30 at No. 10. Six teams currently ranked in the poll are on Memphis’ schedule for the year, Kentucky (2), UAB (3), Bradley (4), SMU (5), Tulsa (6) and Evansville (8). • “Mohawk Minute” Senior Thomas Shannon is hosting a weekly recap and update on Memphis men’s soccer titled “Mohawk Minute,” aptly named for Shannon’s trademark mohawk. The videos can be seen on http://www.youtube.com/sidmemphis. The weekly installments of the show are posted by Tuesday evenings. • A Full Side from Tennessee The Tigers have 11 players on their roster from the state of Tennessee: Mark Sherrod (Knoxville), Chandler Gagnon (Memphis), Wil Linder (Nashville), Cody McCoy (Knoxville), Jordan Johnson (Hendersonville), Dennis Kennetz Jr. (Memphis), Paul Banks (Memphis), Tanner Thompson (Knoxville), Parker Duncan (Johnson City), J.J. Greer (Memphis) and Jordan Leedle (Franklin). -6-

The Tigers hosted the Brazilian professional team Botafogo FR at Mike Rose Stadium. Tiago Reichert headed home a ball served from Parker Duncan in the second minute to put Memphis up early. In the 16th minute, Chandler Gagnon cleared a ball deep in the Tigers’ zone that Mark Sherrod reached before the Botafogo defenders. The keeper came well out of the box in attempt to reach the ball, but Sherrod was able to lob it over the keeper from about 40 yards out to give Memphis the 2-0 lead. • August 21, Memphis 1 @ SMU 1 (Exh.) Memphis traveled to Dallas to face conference foe and fifth-ranked SMU in its exhibition opener. Lewis Ellis gave the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage when he corralled a loose ball and drove it into the back of the net in the 24th minute. SMU got the equalizer in the 40th minute on a Juan Castillo goal. Mark Sherrod and B.J. Williams both had excellent scoring chances in the last 15 minutes, but the game ended in a tie, 1-1.
