Heading Into the Match-Up With Marshall:
Memphis dropped a decision, 3-2, to South Carolina on Saturday night at Mike Rose Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Mark Sherrod continued his hot start to the season with a pair of goals in the game. Sherrod scored on a header in the 35th-minute, when he drilled-home a ball played in the box by Liam Collins. Sherrod connected again in the 49th-minute on a header. Collins and Jordan Johnson assisted on the play. South Carolina rallied to score three goals, all on set-pieces, in the last 20 minutes of the game. Memphis fell to 5-2-1 and 0-1-0 in Conference USA play on the season. For Sherrod, the two-goal performance increased his season total to eight goals and 17 total points. Collins has now totalled six assists on the season, while Johnson recorded his second assist.
Player Spotlight
Mark Sherrod Sophomore Forward Mark Sherrod has continued his torrid, goal-scoring pace on the season. Sherrod collected a pair of headers in Saturday’s game against South Carolina. Prior to Saturday’s game, the striker from Knoxville, Tenn., was already listed among the nation- and conference-leaders in goals scored, goals per game, points, and points per game. He has tallied eight goals on the season, giving the redshirt sophomore 12 for his career. -1-

Going Full Tilt • Five Tigers have played all 760 minutes of action: Andreas Guentner, Thomas Shannon, Cody McCoy, J.J. Greer and Conor Hurley. The Tigers hosted the Brazilian professional team Botafogo FR at Mike Rose Stadium. Tiago Reichert headed home a ball served from Parker Duncan in the second minute to put Memphis up early. In the 16th minute, Chandler Gagnon cleared a ball deep in the Tigers’ zone that Mark Sherrod reached before the Botafogo defenders. The keeper came well out of the box in attempt to reach the ball, but Sherrod was able to lob it over the keeper from about 40 yards out to give Memphis the 2-0 lead. August 21, Memphis 1 @ SMU 1 (Exh.) Memphis traveled to Dallas to face conference foe and fifth-ranked SMU in its exhibition opener. Lewis Ellis gave the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage when he corralled a loose ball and drove it into the back of the net in the 24th minute. SMU got the equalizer in the 40th minute on a Juan Castillo goal. Mark Sherrod and B.J. Williams both had excellent scoring chances in the last 15 minutes, but the game ended in a tie, 1-1.

Senior forward Parker Duncan provided the spark with the first goal of the game en route to a 4-1 victory. Sophomore forward Mark Sherrod scored the game-winning goal when he headed home a corner kick served by sophomore midfielder Liam Collins. Andreas Guentner posted an insurance goal when he took a pass from junior defender Jordan Johnson and sent a shot past the goalkeeper. Duncan finished the scoring when he collected Thomas Shannon’s deflected penalty kick and found the back of the net for his second goal of the game. September 1

Liam Collins provided the game-winning goal for the Tigers in the 88th minute. Belmont was the first to strike in the 32nd minute when Edgardo Padilla scored on a penalty kick after Memphis’ Conor Hurley was awarded a yellow card in the box. Memphis would strike back in the 57th minute on a Lewis Ellis corner, served by Liam Collins. After Niko Olsak pout the Bruins up, 2-1, in the 60th minute, Mark Sherrod would tie the game when he beat the keeper after receiving a cross from Andreas Guentner. Collins knocked in the game-winner when he sent a free kick past the wall and goalkeeper inside the far post. September 4

Sophomore Liam Collins collected a poorly-touched ball from Missouri State and fed it to Senior Parker Duncan. Duncan sent a through-ball to Mark Sherrod, who beat the Bears’ keeper one-on-one to give Memphis the 1-0 victory at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Sophomore goalkeeper Conor Hurley was named the Man-of-the-Match after recording six saves on the night, several of them coming from point-blank range. With the win, Memphis improves to 3-0 on the season, their best start since opening the 2005 season, 4-0. September 9

Memphis fell behind after surrenduring an 19th-minute goal to Eric Frazier. The Tigers wouldn’t give up, controlling the tempo for the majority of the game. Sophomore Austin Gross came in off the bench and scored the equalizer in the 88th minute. Senior Parker Duncan took a shot that goalkeeper Piotr Kikolski deflected off the post. Gross collected the ricochet and scored the game-tying goal from five yards out. Memphis had several scoring chances in the overtime periods, but came away with the 1-1 draw. Thomas Shannon put the Tigers up, 1-0, with his first goal of the season coming just 1:39 into the game. Thomas put away a header to the far post, with Liam Collins and Andreas Guentner assisting on the play. Wisconsin finally got on the scoreboard when Tomislav Zadro found Joey Tennyson for a goal in the 65th minute. Memphis would answer, when Lewis Ellis found Mark Sherrod. Sherrod fired a shot from 18-yards to beat goalkeeper Ciro Martinez. The goal was Sherrod’s fourth this season and third game-winner. With the win, Richie Grant became the all-time wins leader in Memphis men’s soccer history with 111 career victories. September 16 Memphis 1 @ No. 18 Bradley 0

Memphis used a goal from a shoeless Mark Sherrod in the 81st minute to defeat previously-unbeaten No. 18 Bradley in Peoria, Ill. Sherrod lost his shoe while making a run on the counter-attack. Freshman Wil Linder found Sherrod, who rocketed a shot past goalkeeper Brian Billings with his shoeless left foot. Conor Hurley earned his second shutout of the season with the help of his defense. The Tiger’s defense held the Braves without a single shot on goal, as Memphis beat its first ranked opponent since defeating No. 23 Drake, 4-3, in 2009. September 18 Memphis 1 vs. Evansville 2

Evansville used a golden goal from Dylan Terry with less than 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime to hand Memphis its first loss on the season. The Tigers found themselves quickly down 1-0, on a goal by Ryan Stallings. But, Mark Sherrod would take a pass from Wil Linder and tap it home in the 26th minute to knot the game, 1-1, igniting the Tigers. Memphis would have multiple scoring chances in the second half and second overtime period to walk away with the victory. Eric Teppen, the Purple Aces goalkeeper, made seven saves on the game, including three in the second overtime to set-up the game-winner. -7-

Sophomore forward Mark Sherrod scored in the 35th minute when he headed home a cross from fellow sophomore Liam Collins giving Memphis the early 1-0 lead. Just moments into the second half, Collins found Jordan Johnson who played a ball into the box that Sherrod headed past the goalkeeper for his second score of the game. Memphis held the 2-0 lead, until South Carolina’s Bradlee Baladez scored in the 73rd minute. South Carolina’s Braeden Troyer and Chipper Root each netted goals, exactly one minute apart, to give the Gamecocks the win in regulation. October 1
