UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

ANOTHER TOP FIVE OPPONENT FOR THE TIGERS After playing No. 1 UConn for the second time in 18 days, the Tigers do not catch a scheduling break. The team will face No. 5 Louisville on the road Sunday. This marks the first time since 1988-89 that the Tigers will be facing two top-five ranked opponents in a season, but this is the first time since 1996-97 they’ll be doing so on just four days separation. That 199697 team defeated No. 22 Florida, 81-74, then lost at No. 4 Tennessee, 79-63, three days later. It’s not unprecedented for the Tigers to play a top 25 ranked opponent five or more times in a season. In the mid-80s, the Tigers routinely faced between four and six ranked opponents a season. The last time the Tigers faced a team ranked No. 5 in the country was on Feb. 9, 1987 when Memphis defeated No. 5 Ole Miss, 77-76. Memphis is 1-1 all-time against a team ranked No. 5 in the country (the other game was a 88-69 loss to No. 5 Tennessee in 1989-90). TV TIME FOR THE TIGERS With the American Athletic Conference’s agreement with ESPN and the creation of the American Digital Network, Memphis has 14 of its 18 conference games airing on some type of digital platform this season. That includes Sunday’s game against Louisville, which will be carried on ESPNU. Jim Barbar and Steffi Sorensen will have the call of the game from Louisville. This game is one of three Tiger games that will air on ESPNU. Memphis’ road game at Temple (Feb. 9) will also air on the national network, as will the Tigers’ second meeting with Louisville on Feb. 16th from the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. FUQUA-BEY STRINGING TOGETHER DOUBLE DIGIT OUTINGS Sophomore forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey has gotten off to strong starts in each of the past two games. Against Houston, she scored 18 points in the first half. At UConn Wednesday, she scored six of Memphis’ first seven points, finishing with 10 on the night. The 10 points was a third-straight game with double-digit points for the Chicago native, the first time in her Memphis career she has strung together threestraight double-digit scoring performances. That scoring confidence has Fuqua-Bey looking for her shot more. In the first five conference games, she attempted 26 total shots (5.2/game). In the last two games, she has attempted 28 shots (14.0/game). As she establishes herself as a scoring threat, she is also drawing defenses to her and is looking to pass the ball to other post players. A majority of her turnovers in the UConn game (she was tagged with 11) were in looking for post-to-post passes that got tipped away. REUNITING WITH AN OLD OPPONENT The Tigers and Louisville will be squaring off the first time since 2006, but it will be the first meeting between the two teams under their current coaching staffs. Memphis leads the overall series with Louisville, 24-20, but has lost the last four straight meetings, including the last one that was actually played at Bellamine in Louisville as part of a three-games in threedays tournament. Louisville won that last meeting, 102-64, the only time Memphis gave up 100 points in a game. WILDER-COCHRAN BACK IN DOUBLE-DIGITS After being held without a field goal in the win over Houston last Saturday, freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran was 4-for-5 from the field at UConn on Wednesday night, finishing with a team-high 12 points. She has now scored double-digit points in four of the last five games. Through seven conference games, Wilder-Cochran ranks third with 4.6 assists per game. She is the only freshman in the top 10 in the league in assists per game.

She also ranks tied for eighth in steals (2.0) and fourth in free-throw percentage (86.2). SETTLED ON STARTERS? Memphis has used the same starting lineup in the last five games, and the lineup of two freshmen, two sophomores and one senior (who joined Memphis last year) is 3-2 in that five game stretch. Four of the five starters rank in the top four in scoring over that last five game stint, led by 15.2 ppg from Ariel Hearn, 10.8 from Breigha Wilder-Cochran, 10.4 from Pa’Sonna Hope and 9.4 from Asia Fuqua-Bey. The team’s fifth starter, freshman guard Taylor Williams, is seventh in scoring with 3.8 ppg as she battles a bit of a scoring slump in the mid-part of the conference slate, hitting 9-for-32 from the field and 1-for-11 from three in the last five games. LIFE ON THE SCOUTING REPORT Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn knows she has drawn attention to herself with her play to date so far this season. As opposing teams have more film to watch, they have slowed the Memphis guard down a bit. She is shooting 34.9 percent from the floor over the last five games and 29.4 percent from three-point range. Her scoring average has only dipped a bit though to 15.2 ppg in the last five games (her scoring average is 17.8 ppg for the season). FUQUA-BEY LOOKING FOR 400TH POINT? Sophomore forward Asia Fuqua-Bey is 34 points shy of hitting the 400 point barrier. She has 366 career points through 51 games heading in to the first meeting with Louisville. Fuqua-Bey moved in to the Memphis starting lineup as a freshman last year just 14 games in to her Tiger career. She has now started 38 straight games for the Tigers. TURNOVER TROUBLES In games where Memphis scores more points off turnovers than the opponents, they are 8-3. In games where the opponents take more Tiger turnovers the other way for buckets, Memphis is 2-6. Against Rutgers, Memphis had just nine turnovers, while forcing 24 Scarlet Knights turnovers. That was the second time this season that Memphis has had single-digit turnovers in a game. Wednesday night at UConn, Memphis committed 27 turnovers, 16 in the first half, which quickly turned into UConn points on the other end. The Tigers trailed 26-21 with a little more than six minutes left in the first half before Tiger turnovers helped UConn open up a double-digit halftime lead. Memphis has committed 20 or more turnovers in a game nine times this year, but just two times in conference play (the other was a double overtime loss at SMU). ANOTHER TOUGH DEFENSIVE FOE After facing the country’s top scoring defensive team on Wednesday night, things are not getting any easier Sunday. Louisville ranks 37th in the country by holding opponents to 59.4 ppg and ranks 23rd in field goal percentage defense at 35.3 percent. Louisville is also 19th in steals per game (11.1). Memphis will also have to be tough on the glass. Louisville ranks eighth in the country in rebounding margin (+11.3). ANOTHER LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR A YOUNG TIGER SQUAD Memphis does not a single player on its roster who started this season with more than one year of experience in Melissa McFerrin’s system. Senior center Pa’Sonna Hope played two years at Ole Miss before transferring to Memphis before last season. Senior guard Devin Mack was a junior college transfer, also playing in her first season at Memphis last year. And senior Jasbriell Swain was a walk-on at Memphis this year once school started. She played three seasons at Binghamton University, where she was a starter and was named to the America East alldefensive team, but moved home to Memphis to be

HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN

Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis At Memphis: 105-77 (.577) Career: 155-147 (.513)

McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player

Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

close to family. An appeal to the NCAA granted her a waiver from the one-year transfer rule before Memphis’ third game of the season (a win at Wright State in which Swain grabbed 16 rebounds). The Tigers have no juniors on the roster, three sophomores, one redshirt freshman and three freshmen. STRIVE FOR SEVENTY Memphis loves to run offense. When the Tigers score 70 or more points, they are 8-1. When they are held to 69 or fewer points, they are 2-8. In the last two games, Memphis has been held under 50 points in each contest. Until the defense can hold opponents’ point totals down, the Tigers can plan on teams trying to keep them under the 70-point mark. ROWSER LOOKING FOR 200TH POINT Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser is seven points shy of her 200th career point. Rowser is working her way back from a knee injury that cost her all but two games last season. Ten minutes in to Memphis’ third game of the year last season, Rowser suffered a knee injury in a road win at Illinois State in the WNIT. She underwent surgery and has worked her way back to the lineup for Memphis and is looking to regain her mid-range game that helped her score 24 points in her first college game last year. Fellow freshman Taylor Williams is just nine points shy of her 100th career point heading in to her 19th collegiate game. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE HAS A BIG WEEK The Tigers’ strength of schedule takes a big jump this week, as the Tigers are facing both teams from the 2013 national championship game on the road. Two other American Athletic Conference teams have played the two teams from last year’s championship game back-to-back (Houston, SMU), but Memphis is the first to face both back-to-back on the road. OVERTIME? SURE, WHY NOT? The Tigers have played 19 games this year, but have played almost 20 games worth of minutes. Memphis has played five overtime games already this season, including two double-overtime games. The Tigers are 1-1 in double overtime (both road games) and are 2-1 in overtime games with just one extra session (2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road). Memphis is now 13-12 in overtime games in school history and is 7-3 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. Wisconsin holds the NCAA record for overtime games in a season with seven in 1999, fyi.

FUQUA-BEY FIRST HALF HOLDS OFF COLD NIGHT FOR TIGERS With a number of Tigers under the weather, the Tigers’ shooting against Houston was icy cold -- if not for sophomore forward Asia Fuqua-Bey. Fuqua-Bey had 18 first half points in the win against Houston. She finished 9-for-15 from the field. The remainder of the Tigers’ starters were 6-for-32. FIRST WIN OVER RANKED OPPONENT Memphis brings a three-game winning streak in to Wednesday’s match-up with UConn after upsetting No. 23 Rutgers, 74-73, in overtime in the Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. That win was the first over a ranked team for Memphis since a 64-58 win over No. 20 DePaul on Jan. 26, 2003 (also a conference game). The win improved Memphis to 2-0 all-time against teams ranked No. 23 in the country and was the program’s 19th win over a ranked opponent in 93 tries. ANOTHER FIRST FOR THE SEASON Tuesday’s win over Rutgers was the first time this season the Tigers trailed at the half and came back for the victory. At one point, Memphis trailed by 11 points in the first half. That’s the biggest margin of

deficit erased by Memphis this season. The previous best was 10 in the first game of the season against East Tennessee State. Memphis is 1-6 when trailing at the half this season. ANOTHER DOUBLE DIGIT DAY FOR HEARN Ariel Hearn went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line in the waning minutes of the win over Houston to finish with 10 points, her 16th double-digit scoring outing in 18 games this year. In her 50 game old Memphis career, Hearn has scored double digits 40 times. Hearn has posted 20+ point games eight times already this season and now has 12 20+ point games for her young Tiger career. FRESHMAN POINT GUARD PUSHING TOWARD 100 Freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran is 13 assists shy of the 100 assist mark. Only two other freshmen in Memphis history have dished out 100 or more assists in a season. The first was Ruth Ann Forsythe in 1983-84. The second was Ariel Hearn, last season. Hearn owns the freshman single season assist record with 109 assists last year. Wilder-Cochran has 87 assists against 68 turnovers and had a three-game, double-digit scoring streak snapped against Houston. She was held without a made field goal for the first time in conference play, finishing with two points from the free-throw line. HOPE MISSES BULK OF HOUSTON GAME Senior Pa’Sonna Hope tried to play through illness on Saturday, but could manage just six minutes before the Tiger coaching staff put her on the bench. The single-digit minutes were the fewest of her career and were part of a four-game, double-digit scoring streak getting snapped against Houston. Her fourgame double-digit streak started the last SWAIN STEPS UP AGAINST HOUSTON Senior guard Jasbriell Swain started the second half for the Tigers against Houston with Taylor Williams already tagged with two fouls. Swain responded by knocking down her first career triple for the Tigers and was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line, adding four rebounds. The six points was the most of her Memphis career. Swain joined Memphis as a walk-on after spending the last three seasons at Binghamton University, where she was an America East all-defensive team honoree. She was awarded a scholarship before the team’s game at UALR in the fourth game of the season. FUQUA-BEY EARNS REPEAT AMERICAN ATHLETIC WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Asia Fuqua-Bey was named to The American’s weekly honor roll after hitting the game-winning freethrows in overtime vs. No. 23 Rutgers and then leading the Tigers with 18 points in the win over Houston. It was the second time this season for Fuqua-Bey to earn a spot on the American Athletic Conference honor roll. She was also named to the honor roll Dec. 16th. Triple Doubles None

The two makes as the game wound down got Fuqua-Bey to 10 points, giving her double-digit points for the first time in six games for the Tigers. She finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. HEARN EYING CAREER RECORD BOOK Ariel Hearn is eight three-point field goals shy of breaking in to the single season top 10 in three-point field goals made with 44 made triples this season. She needs 52 to catch Jessica Hall’s mark from the 2007-08 season. For her career, Hearn is 29 threes shy of 100 as a Tiger. In school history, only eight other players have knocked down 100 or more threes in a career. HOPE PUTS UP DOUBLE DIGITS FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT NIGHT Senior post Pa’Sonna Hope had a tough shooting night from the field in the opening half of the Rutgers game, but stayed strong at the free-throw line, hitting 6-for-8 and finishing with 16 points for her fourth straight double-digit scoring night of the season. Hope has scored double-digits in all four conference games this season and it is the first time in her Tiger career that she has scored double digit points in four straight games. The Cleveland native now has nine double-digit scoring games this season after hitting 10 or more points just five times last year. TWO POST DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN WIN OVER RUTGERS Memphis had two players put up a double-double in the win over No. 23 Rutgers Tuesday night. Pa’Sonna Hope had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Fuqua-Bey finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. That was the fifth double-double of the season and the sixth of her career for Hope. It was the second of the season and the third of her career for Fuqua-Bey. WILDER-COCHRAN POSTS CAREER NIGHT AT UCF Freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran had a career-night in the win at UCF Saturday. The freshman almost put a triple-double in the books, finishing with career highs in points (16), rebounds (8) and assists (9). In conference contests, Wilder-Cochran leads the league with 5.3 assists a game and ranks fifth with 2.5 steals a night. She has also moved in to the top 25 in scoring with 9.8 ppg and her 73.3 percent free-throw stroke ranks 10th in conference games. The freshman has also found some comfort in shooting from beyond the arc, knocking down four three-point field goals in the last three games and shooting 4-for-7 from beyond the arc in the last three games. HEARN LOOKING FOR CAREER POINT 800 Through 51 career games, sophomore guard Ariel Hearn has been a consistent scorer. She is averaging 15.3 ppg for her career (17.8 ppg this year). She comes in to the first meeting with Louisville with 780 career points, 20 shy of the 800-point mark and 220 shy of the 1,000 point mark. With 11 regular season conference games left and at least one guaranteed conference tournament game, Hearn would need to average 18.3 ppg over the rest of the season to hit the 1,000 point mark this year. That would make her the first Tiger to hit the 1,000 point mark in two seasons since Brittany Carter did it after transferring to Memphis from Georgia in her 60th career game.
