PENALTY KICKS

Lowe’s Senior CLASS Finalist

2 Memphis clinched a spot in the Conference USA Tournament with a 3-0 victory over UTEP on Friday. On Sunday, the U of M improved to 7-0-1 in C-USA play with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Colorado College. With a win Friday, Memphis can clinch at least a share of the C-USA Regular Season Championship. 2 The U of M has scored 40 goals this season coming from 11 different players. The 40 goals in the first 16 matches are the most since the 2007 season when the squad had 41 goals. The 40 goals are the second-most all-time through 16 matches, behind the 2005 squad that scored 41 and the 2007 club. 2 Along with 10 clean sheets by Elise Kuhar-Pitters, the Lady Tiger defense has held opponents to eight or fewer shot on goal attempts in every match this season. 2 Memphis has allowed nine goals in 16 matches this season, the fewest in program history.

2 Senior defender Lizzy Simonin was named a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award on Oct. 5. Simonin is the first Lady Tiger to be named a finalist for the prestigious honor. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. 2 Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on either the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award website or the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through November 14. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches’ votes to determine the winner. 2 Use the hashtag #VoteLizzyLSCA to create awareness and invite other followers to vote for Lizzy Simonin via twitter. Visit the facebook fan page for updates and links to vote for Lizzy Simonin.

2 Sophomore forward Christabel Oduro was tabbed the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 17 after netting the game-winners in Memphis’ weekend victories over UTEP and Colorado College. Oduro became the first Lady Tiger to earn the weekly offensive accolade two times in the same season. It is the sixth weekly honor from C-USA for the U of M program this season.

LADY TIGERS START 15-0-1 2 With 15 wins on the season, the 2011 squad has already claimed the single-season record for most wins in a regular season, besting the previous mark of 14 by the 2007 team. With a win in the final three regular season games, the 2011 squad could set the record for the most overall wins in a season with 18. The 2007 team had 17 wins to set the record. (14 regular season, three postseason) 2 The 15-0-1 start to the regular season is the best start in program history and the 16-game unbeaten streak is the longest in program history. The 2011 squad holds the longest unbeaten streak of 16 games, topping the 2010 and 2007 squads that were unbeaten in 11-straight matches.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN MISS 2 Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 3-11-3 record on the season. Southern Miss is 2-2-2 on its home field this season. 2 Jordan Wagner leads the Golden Eagles offense with four goals on the season. Three other players have two or more goals and Southern Miss has 13 goals on the year. 2 Hannah Vanderboegh has seen the bulk of the minutes in goal for Southern Miss, but Lindsey Schwaner has played as well. Vanderboegh has a 1.87 goals-against average on the season and 85 saves while Schwaner carries 0.92 goals-against average in 196:20 of play.

AUGUST RUSH 2 The U of M was sad to see the calendar flip past August. In 16 seasons, Memphis is 18-5-1 all-time in the month of August and is unbeaten in the last 16 matches in the month of August dating back to the 2003 season. Since their last loss in the month of August (8/31/03-Ole Miss), Memphis has outscored its opponents 57-5.

Around C-USA

C-USA Schedule Continues 2 After a perfect 8-0 mark in the non-conference slate, Memphis opened C-USA with four-straight victories on the road. The Lady Tigers are one of three league members (UCF and Rice) that play seven road games and four home matches in league play. Houston, Southern Miss and UAB each have five home and six road matches while Colorado College, Marshall and SMU have six home and five road matches. UTEP, Tulsa and East Carolina have seven home and four road matches. 2 Memphis’ 4-0 start in conference play was the first in program history and marks the third time a team has won four-straight games in league play. At 7-0-1 in C-USA, the Lady Tigers are off to the best start in C-USA play.

ROAD WARRIORS 2 The sign of a good team is its play on the road and the Lady Tigers have had some great success playing away from the Bluff City. In the last four plus seasons, Memphis is 32-6-3 in road games. The Lady Tigers are 18-3-3 in conference road games since the 2007 season.

TAKE THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD 2 This weekend begins the third installment of three road trips this season of three or more games for the Lady Tigers. The Sept. 15 match at Vanderbilt began a five-game road swing for the Lady Tigers. The trip was the longest since the 2002 season in which the U of M played seven-straight matches on the road. In 14 road trips that lasted three or more games, Memphis has compiled a record of 27-22-3 (8-0 in 2011). Scoring is very close in the road trip matches at 82-76 in favor of Memphis, but the U of M has equaled or bettered their opponent scoring in the last seven road trips. Memphis went 3-0 on its first road trip of 2011, posting three shutouts and a perfect 5-0 on the most recent trip with four shutouts.

CONFERENCE TOP-20 2 TopDrawerSoccer.com’s annual conference top-20 rankings were released in late September and Memphis had a league-high five players make the list. Reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Year Lizzy Simonin is No. 2. Christabel Oduro (10th), Elise Kuhar-Pitters (13th), Lizzy Hildebrandt (15th) and Bailey Pembroke are also in the top-20.

BEST OFFENSE IS A GOOD DEFENSE 2 As the saying goes, the best offense is a good defense, which has certainly been a case for the U of M this season. Among 13 players that have played in the back this season, six players have accounted for 29 of Memphis’ 107 points. Nine goals and 11 assists have been posted by defensive players on the year. Lizzy Simonin has scored five times this season and when the former forward finds the back of the net, Memphis is 18-1-2.

Three’s Company 2 Natalia Gomez-Junco collected a hat trick in Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Tulsa. It was the first hat trick since Kylie Hayes scored three goals in a C-USA Tournament match against Southern Miss in 2007. 2 The ironic feat in Gomez-Junco’s hat trick? The reserve midfielder/forward logged 33 minutes in the match. 2 Other tidbits of irony: Lizzy Simonin’s penalty kick goal came in the 33rd minute. Tulsa had three saves in both the first and second halves and Elise Kuhar-Pitters had three saves in the second half.

SENIOR SALUTE 2 Courtesy of research done by CollegeSoccer360.com, the Lady Tigers senior class is ranked 11th in the nation with 61 wins in their time at the U of M. The 2011 senior class needs two victories to tie for the most by a class in program history.

PUNCH THE TIME CARD 2 Senior Lizzy Simonin is the only Memphis player to play the full 1460 minutes this season. Five other players have logged more than 1200 minutes this season.

UP NEXT 2 Memphis closes the regular season at UAB on Thursday, Oct. 27. The Lady Tigers will then defend their four-straight C-USA Championships as hosts of the C-USA Tournament that begins Nov. 2 at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
