SERIES HISTORY -- TIGERS VS TULANE This is the 41st meeting between Memphis and Tulane, but will be the first since the 2012-13 season, as the two teams were in different conferences last year and did not play one another. Memphis leads the all-time series, 23-17, but has lost the last two meetings with Tulane, including a 7262 loss in the Tigers’ last trip to New Orleans. Memphis is 10-9 all-time in games played in New Orleans and last won a game at Tulane in the 2007-08 season. THE LAST TIME WE MET: TULANE There are just two Tigers left on the roster from Memphis’ last game against Tulane. Juniors Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Ariel Hearn are the lone two Tigers who played in the last meeting in Devlin Fieldhouse. Nicole Dickson scored 31 points on 12-for-24 shooting in the last meeting off the bench. Both Fuqua-Bey and Hearn started for the Tigers. Fuqua-Bey finished with seven points and seven rebounds, while Hearn finished with seven points and five assists while shooting 2-for-12 from the field while battling first half foul trouble. The Tigers trailed 25-24 at the half, but were outscored 47-38 in the second half in the 72-62 loss. HEARN APPROACHING 15 ALL-TIME AT MEMPHIS Ariel Hearn needs 29 more points to move in to the top 15 all-time at Memphis in scoring heading in to Saturday’s game at Tulane. She enters Saturday’s game with 1,398 career points. She is eying Shannon Hamp’s (1999-2003) mark of 1,429 points that currently sits 15th on the career scoring list. If Hearn can get to the 1,500 career point mark this year, she will be in the top 13 at the school in scoring (1,510 is currently 12th). In her third season as a Tiger, Hearn is currently 258 points from moving to the career top 10 at Memphis. Former teammate Nicole Dickson (who scored 31 points in the Tigers’ last game at Tulane) is currently 10th in Memphis history with 1,656 career points. CAREER NIGHT FOR CREIGHTON VS UCF Freshman forward Cheyenne Creighton got the Memphis bench powered up early in the win over UCF, Wednesday night. Creighton played a career-high 31 minutes, which was much-needed for the Tigers as junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey played just three minutes in the opening half due to foul trouble and finished with just 14 minutes in the game and four fouls. Creighton posted a career-best 12 points on 6-for13 shooting, adding four rebounds, one assist and a block. Behind her effort off the bench, the Tiger bench out-scored UCF, 27-4. BETTER BENCH OUTPUT PART OF WIN STREAK The two Memphis wins have coincided with some more consistent scoring off the bench. In the win at Houston, it was Courtney Powell stepping in to relieve a post corps that was battling foul trouble. Powell finished with seven points and five rebounds in 24 minutes. Wednesday, it was Cheyenne Creighton’s career-best 12 points that got the bench started. Memphis also got solid contributions from Brea Elmore (7 points), Amber Holmes (two assists, one steal and two points in 18 minutes) and Powell again (six points, four rebounds). Memphis is 9-2 when the Tiger bench out-scores its counterparts.
WILLIAMS DOUBLES UP AGAINST UCF Sophomore guard Taylor Williams played a careerbest 38 minutes in the win over UCF. The Kansas City native finished with 11 points on 3-for-8 shooting, adding career bests in free throws made (5) and attempted (6). The sophomore just missed a doubledouble, finishing with 7 rebounds. She also added 2 blocks and 3 steals, both career bests, in the win over the Knights. TIGERS SECURE SWEEP With the win over UCF, the Tigers swept a third conference opponent. Memphis has swept the series with UCF for two straight seasons now. Memphis also swept the series with Cincinnati and Houston. Memphis has two opponents on its schedule it only faces once a season, and in a schedule glitch, hasn’t faced either one yet -- Tulane and SMU. Saturday’s meeting with Tulane will be the only one this year with the Green Wave (barring conference tournament play) and Memphis closes its regular season slate against SMU on Mar. 2nd. Memphis will have to try to fight off being swept in its other two remaining season games. Memphis lost at Tulsa back in January, then lost to visiting UConn. Memphis hosts Tulsa, Tuesday, then travels to #1 UConn next Saturday. WILDER-COCHRAN MISSES TIME TO INJURY Sophomore point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran has had a tough season. The returning point guard suffered an injury in the first practice of the fall and missed a lot of preseason work, then suffered a hand injury in the loss at USF on New Year’s Eve and missed The next three games. In the loss at Temple on Feb. 4th, she was tracking down her own missed field goal and collided with an Owl and suffered another injury. She has missed the last three games heading in to Saturday’s game at Tulane. CHANGE OF ROLE FOR HEARN In the early part of the conference schedule, the Tigers utilized Ariel Hearn mostly at the two-guard spot. The hand injury suffered by Breigha Wilder-Cochran in the first game with USF changed that. Memphis started freshman Amber Holmes in the next game (a win vs. East Carolina), but in the three games that Wilder-Cochran missed, Hearn ran the point for the Tigers. A BIRTHDAY WIN? Memphis gave junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey a win over UCF on her birthday on Wednesday. The Tigers can try to get a similar gift for Breigha Wilder-Cochran, who celebrates her birthday on Sunday (2/22). STRETCHING THE DEFENSE Junior guard Ariel Hearn has developed a reputation for not being afraid to shoot the three. She has landed 150 triples for her career and already ranks seventh on the Memphis career list in three point field goals made. She needs just two more to move to sixth all-time (where Kitty Allen, 1993-97) is currently sitting. But Hearn had a three-point field goal streak snapped in the win over UCF, going 0-for-3 from beyond the arc. That snapped a streak of seven straight games with a three-point field goal made for Hearn. But while Hearn failed to connect, she has had some company in the three-point field goals made column recently. Mooriah Rowser landed three in the win at Houston and Brea Elmore scored the Tigers’ lone triple in the win over UCF Wednesday night. Elmore was 3-for-3 from the field in the win, snapping a scoreless drought from the field for the freshman. In the previous five games, she was a combined

0-for-16. NO SENIOR DISCOUNTS Memphis does not have a senior on its roster, so it has fallen to the junior trio of Ariel Hearn, Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Mooriah Rowser to serve as the Tigers’ captains. LEARNING TO WIN CLOSE GAMES A young Tiger squad is still learning how to pull out close games. Of the Tigers’ 12 losses, six have been by single digits, including a four-point loss to visiting USF to start this current three-game slide. Those six Memphis single digit losses have added up to a combined 27 points. Memphis is 5-7 in single-digit games this season. HEARN GOES FOR 30 IN LOSS Ariel Hearn posted her first career 30-point game in the 57-53 loss to USF. That 30 points was the best single scoring game total for a player in the American Athletic Conference since league play began and was the first time a Memphis player has hit the 30-plus point mark since Nicole Dickson scored 34 in a win over Wright State back in January of 2013. Hearn’s 30-point effort earned her a spot on the American Athletic Conference Weekly honor roll for a third time this season. MEMPHIS FINISHES FALL SEMESTER IN A FLOURISH IN THE CLASSROOM The Tigers had a strong finish to the fall semester. Six players finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester (Cheyenne Creighton, Asianna FuquaBey, Ariel Hearn, Amber Holmes, Mooriah Rowser, Brianna Wright) and freshman Amber Holmes posted the highest team GPA of the fall at 3.87. The Tigers’ fall team GPA was 3.087. TURNING O-BOARDS TO POINTS Memphis has been one of the better offensive rebounding teams in the American this season, but has not seen that translate to second chance points of late. Heading in to the Temple game, the Tigers are fourth in the American with 14.4 offensive rebounds per game in league play. In the last six games, Memphis has been outscored in second chance points six straight times. For the season, they are giving up eight points a game more than they have scored on second chance points. Against USF, the Tigers gave USF 15 second-chance points and scored just five of their own off seven offensive rebounds. USF finished with 16 offensive rebounds, 11 in the second half.

Those eight boards pushed her past 500 for her career, making her just the 25th player in Memphis’ 43-year women’s basketball history to have over 500 career points and 500 career rebounds. The second triple pushed her past the 1,000 career point mark, making her the 23rd player in school history to score a grand or more. She added a pair of threes in the second half, which gave her the 100th triple of her three-year Tiger career. She is just the ninth player in school history to connect on 100 career threes. Getting to her 1,000th career point in her 64th career game means that Hearn was the fifth-fastest in Memphis history to get to the 1,000 career point mark. She tied the mark set by Tamika Whitmore, who went on to become the second Memphis women’s basketball player drafted in to the WNBA, earning WNBA All-Star honors while she played in Indiana.
