TIME TO HIT THE ROAD Memphis will now take to the road for the first time in American Athletic Conference play, playing at SMU, Tuesday at 7 p.m. That game will be carried by The American Digital Network for free at theamerican.org/dn. This will be the first American Athletic Conference road game for Memphis, but it is to a somewhat familiar opponent, as SMU was a member of Conference USA with the Tigers through last season. SMU won the C-USA regular season in 2012-13 and is off to a 10-4 start this year. The Mustangs are also back in a newly-remodelled Moody Coliseum. SMU returned to the confines of their home facility in their last game, falling to visiting USF, 76-62. Memphis is 2-1 in true road games this year with wins at Wright State and Tennessee Tech and a loss at UALR. The Tigers have not played a road game since the double overtime win at Tennessee Tech back on Dec. 14th. HEARN PUSHES PAST 700TH CAREER POINT Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn scored 20 points in the loss to No. 1 Connecticut, tying a career-high with five three-point field goals made. The 20-point game is the fourth in five games for the Memphis native and is the sixth of the season. Hearn now has passed the 700 career point barrier in just 46 career games. She is averaging 15.3 ppg for her Tiger career and could be within reach of the 1,000 point mark still in her sophomore season. With 15 regular season games remaining and one guaranteed conference tournament game, Hearn would need to average 17.5 ppg to hit the 1,000 point mark this year (297 points/17 games). She is currently averaging 18.7 ppg this season. Hearn is trying to become the 23rd player in Memphis history to hit the 1,000 point mark. The last Tiger to join the 1,000 point club was Nicole Dickson, who finished her career (2009-2013) 10th in scoring with 1,656 points. WILLIAMS MAKES FIRST CAREER START Freshman guard Taylor Williams will probably always remember who she made her first career start against as the freshman was in the starting lineup in the Tigers’ first-ever game versus No. 1 Connecticut on Saturday. Williams has been one of the Tigers’ most consistent scorers as of late, averaging 8.8 ppg in the last five contests to rank second on the team in scoring. She has also been the team’s third-best rebounder in the last five games, averaging 5.2 rebounds a night. The Kansas City native is 28 points shy of the 100 career point mark, and ranks second on the team with 12 three-point field goals made in her first 14 college competitions.

ABOUT SMU SMU is off to a 10-4 start on the season and a 1-2 start in American Athletic Conference play. Senior guard Keena Mays leads the team in scoring and just passed her 1,000th point mark at SMU (she played her freshman year at Kansas). A pre-season conference honoree, she has been named the American Athletic Conference player of the week three times already this season. Down low, Mays gets help from senior forward Akil Simpson, who ranks second on the team in scoring (13.9 ppg) and leads the Mustangs with 7.8 rebounds a night. Junior forward Destynee Hives-McCray rounds out the double-digit scorers for SMU with 11.0 ppg and ranks second with 7.0 rebounds a night. HOPE LOOKING FOR FIVE MORE BLOCKS Senior post Pa’Sonna Hope is just five blocks shy of moving in to the career top 10 at Memphis, despite not having joined the Memphis roster until last season. Hope has 49 blocks for her Memphis career, just five shy of moving in to a three-way tie for 10th all-time in the Memphis record book. WILDER-COCHRAN LOOKING FOR HEARN’S FRESHMAN ASSIST MARK Through the first 14 games of the season, freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran leads Memphis with 65 assists. Wilder-Cochran averages 4.6 assists per game. She needs 35 more assists to become just the third freshman in school history to dish out 100 or more assists. The first to reach that feat was Ruth Ann-Forsythe, who finished with 101 assists in the 1983-84 season. The second was Ariel Hearn, last season. Hearn finished with a freshman single season record 109 assists in her first collegiate season. WILDER-COCHRAN POSTS FOURTH STRAIGHT GAME WITH FIVE OR MORE ASSISTS Freshman guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran almost wasn’t a Memphis Tiger. She was an early signee with South Alabama before the Jaguars made a coaching change and released Wilder-Cochran from her NLI. That was a big pick-up for the Tigers, who lost senior guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir to graduation in May. Wilder-Cochran has stepped in to give the Tigers’ another quarterback for the offense, allowing Ariel Hearn to move to the two-guard position where she is having the best scoring season of her young Tiger career. Wilder-Cochran has handed out five or more assists in four straight games and has dished out 28 assists against 20 turnovers over the last five Tiger contests. She has also chipped in 7.2 ppg in the last five outings and has landed three-point field goals in two of the last three games. HOPE BACK ON TRACK? Senior Pa’Sonna Hope finished with 11 points in the loss to Connecticut on Saturday. That was the senior post’s first double-digit scoring night in five games. The senior also managed to avoid foul trouble in the Connecticut game, playing 38 minutes, the most time she has been on the court since the road game at UALR back on Nov. 22nd. SNAPPING SHOOTING SLUMPS Memphis has a couple of players whose shooting touch has gone as cold. Sophomore forward Asia Fuqua-Bey was held scoreless against Connecticut after scoring just one bucket against Temple in the conference opener. Since posting back-to-back double digit games against Tennessee Tech and Mississippi Valley State, Fuqua-Bey is 4-for-18 from the floor (22.2 percent). The sophomore is still hitting the glass though, averaging 6.3 rebounds over those same four games. Redshirt freshman Mooriah Rowser was also held to single digits against Connecticut, her second straight game without reaching double-digit points. After scoring 16 points against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Maryland native has gone 4-for-18 in American Athletic Conference play (22.2 percent).

HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN
Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis At Memphis: 102-75 (.576) Career: 152-145 (.512)
McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT
Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player
Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

SHOOTIN’ FOR 70 Memphis is a team that likes offense. When scoring 70 or more points, the Tigers are 6-0 and when held under 70, they are 1-7. WILLIAMS SINKS CAREER HIGH IN CONFERENCE OPENER Freshman guard Taylor Williams scored a careerbest 12 points off the bench in the loss to Temple. Williams was 5-for-8 from the field, 2-for-3 from three-point range and had seven rebounds, finishing second on the team. The freshman has seen her playing time increase this season as the Tigers’ front line battles through foul issues and a short roster. Originally signed as a guard, Williams is playing both the three and four positions for Memphis, averaging 26.5 minutes a game over the past four contests. She has scored doubledigits in two of those contests, averaging 9.3 points and 6.0 rebounds a game in the last four games. HEARN NAMED TO AMERICAN HONOR ROLL Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn was named to the American Conference honor roll on Dec. 23rd after her performance in a pair of Memphis wins before the holiday break. Hearn averaged 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and a steal in the wins over Mississippi Valley State and UAPB. She shot 46.9 percent from the field, 53.8 percent from three-point range and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line. On the season, Hearn has already knocked down 29 three-point field goals, two more than she scored all of last season. Hearn ranks first in The American in three-point field goal percentage (46.8) and third in three-point field goals made (2.4). She also ranks third in the league in scoring (18.3 ppg) and fifth in steals with 2.3. HEARN GOES FOR 20 AGAIN Heading into the SMU game, Hearn has scored double digit points in 12 of 14 games this year and in 36 of 46 career games. She has now scored 20 or more points in six games this year, two more than all of last year. She has also scored 20 or more points in back to back games twice this year. TIGER BENCH GAINS SOME MORE DEPTH Freshman post Brandi Goodman returned to the Memphis lineup just before the holiday break, after missing all of the preseason and the first 10 games of the season with a back injury. Goodman played in late minutes for the Tigers against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, finishing with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting, adding two rebounds and a blocked shot in 12 minutes.

FUQUA-BEY FOLLOWS FIRST 20-POINT NIGHT WITH A DOUBLE-DOUBLE Asia Fuqua-Bey followed her first career 20-plus point night with a double-double against MVSU. She finished with 12 rebounds (a career-high) and added 10 points. She also added a career-best three blocks to go with three steals in 33 minutes of play. Including the UAPB game, Fuqua-Bey is averaging 9.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in the last five Tiger outings leading into conference play. She also leads the team with six blocked shots in the last five games. WINNING CLOSE GAMES Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has been telling her young team that Memphis wins close games. Already this season, Memphis has played three overtime games (with a 2-1 record) and has played a pair of one-point decisions (with a 1-1 mark). In Coach McFerrin’s six seasons at Memphis, the Tigers are 33-11 in games decided by five or fewer points. Tigers in Games Decided by Five of Fewer Pts Under McFerrin

The Tigers are now 12-11 all-time in overtime (and 1-0 in double overtime) and are 6-2 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. ROWSER NAMED AMERICAN’S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday after hitting the game-winning layup in the 78-76 double overtime road win at Tennessee Tech. That was Rowser’s second league Rookie of the Week honor. She earned the league’s first-ever Rookie of the Week award in the Tigers’ regular-season overtime win against East Tennessee State in week one. MCFERRIN’S 100TH TIGER VICTORY Melissa McFerrin is not likely to forget her 100th Memphis win as the Tigers used double overtime to pick up a road win at Tennessee Tech, 78-76. That win was also her 150th career head coaching win. Memphis has had just four women’s basketball head coaches since the program returned as a varsity sport in 1972-73, so McFerrin has a ways to go to move up from third on the Tiger coaching list. Joye Lee-McNelis is second on the list with 229 Memphis wins, behind Mary Lou John’s 368 Tiger victories. ANOTHER FRESHMAN EARNING HONORS Freshman guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran became the second Tiger freshman this season to earn a Player of the week honor, this one from CollegeSportsMadness.com, as she was named the website’s American Athletic Conference Player of the Week following the win over UAB. The Hoover, Ala., native was also named to the American Athletic Conference honor roll for her performance in the 73-72 win over UAB. Wilder-Cochran knocked down two free-throws with four seconds left in that game to help Memphis build a 73-69 lead. The Tigers needed the cushion as UAB hit a three at the buzzer to make the final score 73-72 in the Tigers’ favor. Wilder-Cochran leads Memphis with 37 assists on the season and ranks second on the team with 12 steals. She also ranks third in scoring with 9.0 ppg. She is the second Tiger freshman to be honored in the first nine games this season. Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser was named the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Week in the first week of the season. TIGERS PICKED SIXTH IN AMERICAN PRESEASON POLL The Memphis women’s basketball team is a member of the American Athletic Conference beginning this year. The Tigers were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll, behind defending national champions Connecticut, and national runners-up Louisville. USF, Rutgers and SMU round out the preseason top five i the preseason coaches’ poll.
