THAT’S FOUL! The Tigers’ front court has had some foul troubles as of late. Against Temple in the Tigers’ conference opener, Asia Fuqua-Bey and Pa’Sonna Hope both were in first half foul trouble. Fuqua-Bey ended up playing a season-low 23 minutes, only to SMU and play just 22 minutes, again due to first half foul trouble. Hope had gone through a stretch of three games where she had not played more than 20 minutes due to foul troubles, but has maybe found a way out of trouble. She played 38 minutes in the loss to Connecticut, then played 31 minutes against SMU, but not before picking up two first half fouls. When Fuqua-Bey and Hope battle foul trouble, that means a move for freshman guard Taylor Williams to a post spot and means more minutes are available for Courtney Powell and Brandi Goodman. Goodman is returning from a pre-season back injury diagnosis and Powell averaged just 3.5 minutes a game last year, playing in just four of Memphis’ 30 games as a freshman. POWELL RESPONDS WITH CAREER NIGHT With her front-court mates in foul trouble at SMU, sophomore forward Courtney Powell made the most of her playing opportunity, finishing with a careerbest 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Powell also added five rebounds and a steal in a career-high 22 minutes. HOPE POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE AT SMU Senior post Pa’Sonna Hope posted a career-best 15 rebounds in the loss at SMU. She also finished just two points shy of a career-high in scoring, finishing with 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting. The double-double is the fourth of the season for the senior captain. The 15 rebounds is her seventh double-digit-rebounding night of the season. She finished just shy of posting a double-double in the Tigers’ game against Connecticut, finishing with nine rebounds and 11 points on 5-for-11 shooting. For her career, she now has five double-doubles. She also has 50 blocked shots for her Memphis career, four shy of the Tiger career top 10. In conference play, Hope is averaging a doubledouble of 10.0 points and 11.3 rebounds a game. CLEANING UP POSSESSIONS Memphis had gone through its first two games in relatively good shape in terms of taking care of the basketball. The Tigers had just 10 turnovers in the loss to Temple, then had 19, eight of those in the last minutes of the game, against Connecticut. But the Tigers committed a season-high 28 turnovers in the double overtime loss at SMU Tuesday night. In the national NCAA statistics, Memphis ranks 235th out of 343 NCAA Division I teams with 17.7 turnovers a night. In conference play, the Tigers are turning it over 19 times a night. That gets more difficult on Saturday against UCF. Sophomore guard Briahanna Jackson ranks 13th in the country in steals per game with 3.14 picks a night and as a team, UCF ranks fourth in the American

conference and 121st in the country with 8.6 steals a game. LOOKING FOR FIRST CONFERENCE WIN The Tigers are still looking for their first American Athletic Conference victory. After losses to Temple and No. 1 Connecticut at home, the Tigers at one point had a 15-point lead in the game at SMU on Tuesday night, but fell in double overtime to the host Mustangs. The only other time Memphis has started league play 0-3 under Melissa McFerrin was in her first season in 2008-09. That team got their first conference win on the road (at Rice). The last time Memphis started conference play with more than three straight losses was in 2006-07. HEARN PUSHES PAST 700TH CAREER POINT Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn scored 20 points in the loss to No. 1 Connecticut, tying a career-high with five three-point field goals made. The 20-point game is the fourth in five games for the Memphis native and is the sixth of the season. Hearn now has passed the 700 career point barrier in just 46 career games. Heading in to the first meeting with UCF, she is averaging 15.3 ppg for her Tiger career and could be within reach of the 1,000 point mark still in her sophomore season. With 14 regular season games remaining and one guaranteed conference tournament game, Hearn would need to average 17.5 ppg to hit the 1,000 point mark this year (279 points/16 games). She is currently averaging 18.6 ppg this season. Hearn is trying to become the 23rd player in Memphis history to hit the 1,000 point mark. The last Tiger to join the 1,000 point club was Nicole Dickson, who finished her career (2009-2013) 10th in scoring with 1,656 points. ABOUT UCF UCF is looking to even its American Athletic Conference record on Saturday afternoon. The Knights have three players averaging double-digits this year, led by sophomore guard Briahanna Jackson and her 17.8 ppg. A 36.1 percent shooter from three-point range, Jackson also has a team-high 44 steals on the season and will be a handful for the Tigers’ ball-handlers. Jackson is getting scoring help out of the backcourt from freshman guard Zykira Lewis, who averages 11.6 ppg. Down low, international player Sara Djassi averages 10.7 ppg, and can stretch the floor, knocking down 11 three-point field goals in 44 tries. The Knights also have senior post Erika Jones working her way back after missing all of the non-conference season. In three games back, Jones is averaging 5.3 ppg and is playing over 20 minutes a night off the bench since conference play began. The Knights won the last meeting between the two teams in Orlando. That game was a physical one, with four different Tigers fouling out of the game and UCF taking advantage at the free-throw line, knocking down 33-of-46 free-throw attempts. UCF won its way to the Conference USA tournament championship final last year, falling to host Tulsa in their last game in C-USA. FREE BASKETBALL Memphis has only played 15 games, but has logged more minutes than that, having played four overtime games already this year. The Tigers opened the season with an overtime win over East Tennessee, then lost their first true road game of the year at UALR in overtime. In December, the Tigers went to double overtime for the first time in school history in a win at Tennessee Tech. Tuesday night, the Tigers took SMU to double overtime, before falling 80-75. The Tigers are now 12-12 all-time in overtime (and 1-1 in double overtime) and are 6-3 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. The four overtime games in a season is the most ever for a Tiger team.

HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN

Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis At Memphis: 102-76 (.573) Career: 152-146 (.510)

McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player

Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

WILLIAMS MAKES FIRST CAREER START Freshman guard Taylor Williams will probably always remember who she made her first career start against as the freshman was in the starting lineup in the Tigers’ first-ever game versus No. 1 Connecticut on Saturday. Williams has been one of the Tigers’ most consistent scorers as of late, averaging 8.8 ppg in the last five contests to rank second on the team in scoring. She has also been the team’s third-best rebounder in the last five games, averaging 5.2 rebounds a night. The Kansas City native is 28 points shy of the 100 career point mark, and ranks second on the team with 12 three-point field goals made in her first 14 college competitions. WILDER-COCHRAN LOOKING FOR HEARN’S FRESHMAN ASSIST MARK Through the first 14 games of the season, freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran leads Memphis with 65 assists. Wilder-Cochran averages 4.6 assists per game. She needs 35 more assists to become just the third freshman in school history to dish out 100 or more assists. The first to reach that feat was Ruth Ann-Forsythe, who finished with 101 assists in the 1983-84 season. The second was Ariel Hearn, last season. Hearn finished with a freshman single season record 109 assists in her first collegiate season. SHOOTIN’ FOR 70 Memphis is a team that likes offense. When scoring 70 or more points, the Tigers are 6-1 and when held under 70, they are 1-7. HEARN NAMED TO AMERICAN HONOR ROLL Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn was named to the American Conference honor roll on Dec. 23rd after her performance in a pair of Memphis wins before the holiday break. Hearn averaged 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and a steal in the wins over Mississippi Valley State and UAPB. She shot 46.9 percent from the field, 53.8 percent from three-point range and 75.0 percent from the free-throw line. On the season, Hearn has already knocked down 29 three-point field goals, two more than she scored all of last season. Hearn ranks first in The American in three-point field goal percentage (46.8) and third in three-point field goals made (2.4). She also ranks third in the league in scoring (18.3 ppg) and fifth in steals with 2.3. HEARN GOES FOR 20 AGAIN Heading into the UCF game, Hearn has scored double digit points in 13 of 15 games this year and in 37 of 47 career games. She has now scored 20 or more points in six games this year, two more than all of last year. She has also scored 20 or more points in back to back games twice this year.

TIGER BENCH GAINS SOME MORE DEPTH Freshman post Brandi Goodman returned to the Memphis lineup just before the holiday break, after missing all of the preseason and the first 10 games of the season with a back injury. Goodman played in late minutes for the Tigers against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, finishing with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting, adding two rebounds and a blocked shot in 12 minutes. FUQUA-BEY FOLLOWS FIRST 20-POINT NIGHT WITH A DOUBLE-DOUBLE Asia Fuqua-Bey followed her first career 20-plus point night with a double-double against MVSU. She finished with 12 rebounds (a career-high) and added 10 points. She also added a career-best three blocks to go with three steals in 33 minutes of play. WINNING CLOSE GAMES Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has been telling her young team that Memphis wins close games. Already this season, Memphis has played four overtime games (with a 2-2 record) and has played a pair of one-point decisions (with a 1-1 mark). In Coach McFerrin’s six seasons at Memphis, the Tigers are 33-12 in games decided by five or fewer points. Tigers in Games Decided by Five of Fewer Pts Under McFerrin 2008-09..........................................................6-0 2009-10........................................................11-5 2010-11..........................................................3-1 2011-12..........................................................7-1 2012-13..........................................................3-3 2013-14..........................................................3-2 WALK-ON AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP Senior Jasbrielle Swain joined the Tigers as a walkon after school began. Swain played the last three seasons at Binghamton University, earning America East All-Defensive Team honors after starting in 29 of 30 games. Swain was granted a waiver by the NCAA to play for the Tigers right before the team’s game against Wright State. She made a bang in her debut, pulling down 16 rebounds in the win at Wright State. The Tigers then surprised Swain before the game at UALR, putting her on scholarship for her final collegiate season. ROWSER NAMED AMERICAN’S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday after hitting the game-winning layup in the 78-76 double overtime road win at Tennessee Tech. That was Rowser’s second league Rookie of the Week honor. She earned the league’s first-ever Rookie of the Week award in the Tigers’ regular-season overtime win against East Tennessee State in week one. MCFERRIN’S 100TH TIGER VICTORY Melissa McFerrin is not likely to forget her 100th Memphis win as the Tigers used double overtime to pick up a road win at Tennessee Tech, 78-76. That win was also her 150th career head coaching win. Memphis has had just four women’s basketball head coaches since the program returned as a varsity sport in 1972-73, so McFerrin has a ways to go to move up from third on the Tiger coaching list. Joye Lee-McNelis is second on the list with 229 Memphis wins, behind Mary Lou John’s 368 Tiger victories. ANOTHER FRESHMAN EARNING HONORS Freshman guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran became the second Tiger freshman this season to earn a Player of the week honor, this one from CollegeSportsMadness.com, as she was named the website’s American Athletic Conference Player of the Week following the win over UAB. The Hoover, Ala., native was also named to the American Athletic Conference honor roll for her performance in the 73-72 win over UAB. Wilder-Cochran knocked down two free-throws with four seconds left in that game to help Memphis build a 73-69 lead. The Tigers needed the cushion as UAB hit a three at the buzzer to make the final score 73-72 in the Tigers’ favor. Wilder-Cochran leads Memphis with 37 assists on the season and ranks second on the team with 12 steals. She also ranks third in scoring with 9.0 ppg. She is the second Tiger freshman to be honored in the first nine games this season. Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser was named the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Week in the first week of the season. notes con’t on page 6
