UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

SERIES HISTORY -- TIGERS VS UCONN This is just the fourth meeting between Memphis and UConn. The Huskies lead the series, 3-0. This will be the first meeting between the two teams in Storrs. Last year, the two teams met in Hartford and played at the XL Center. THE LAST TIME WE MET: UCONN Ariel Hearn scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but Memphis managed just 34 points in the first meeting with then-No. 2 UConn. With her 13 points, Hearn moved to 16th on the Memphis scoring charts with 1,370 points. Memphis trailed 16-14 with 6:55 left in the first half thanks to Hearn and Mooriah Rowser combining to score 10 of Memphis’ first 14 points. But UConn closed the first half on a 12-2 run for a 28-16 halftime left. Saniya Chong went on an 8-0 run all on her own to build the halftime lead, hitting back to back triples and a pair of free-throws. The Tiger defense held UConn to just 28.6 percent shooting in the first half with Husky starters Morgan Tuck and Breanna Stewart playing just single digit minutes in the game. But in the second half, UConn doubled its halftime advantage in the opening five minutes to 24 at 4319 with 15:28 remaining and the Tigers could not get an offense going, attempting just four free-throw attempts in the game’s waning minutes and shooting just 21.7 percent from the field. SITTING AT SEVEN With the home loss to Tulsa on Tuesday night, Memphis lost its chance for a top five seed at the upcoming American Conference tournament and will be the tournament’s No. 7 seed. A pair of Memphis losses, combined with two UCF wins, would tie the Tigers and UCF, but Memphis swept the regular season series with the Knights, 2-0, to secure the seven seed. Memphis cannot catch the three teams that are knotted for fourth at 10-6, so the Tigers will be the No. 7 seed and will play the second game of the conference tournament on Friday next week. Who Memphis plays will get sorted in the next two games. The Tigers will play the No. 10 seed, which right now is SMU. But SMU closes its season with a pair of opponents it only plays once on the season, one of those is Cincinnati, a team one game behind the Mustangs. If SMU can win vs Cincinnati on Saturday in Dallas, both teams would be tied at 3-13 in league play with SMU holding the tiebreaker. SMU closes the regular season at Memphis, Monday, and Cincinnati closes with a home game against Tulsa, a team fighting for a top five seed still. Memphis swept the regular season series with Cincinnati in a pair of low-scoring games (41-38, 56-44) and will be facing SMU for the first time this season on Monday night in the last night of regular season play. HEARN TO 15TH ON MEMPHIS CAREER SCORING LIST Junior guard Ariel Hearn scored 16 points in the loss to Tulsa on Tuesday night. That pushed the Memphis native to 15th on the Tigers’ all-time scoring list. She now has 1,432 career points and needs just 11 more to move to 14th all-time. That mark at 14th is held by former Melissa McFerrin-coached Tiger Brittany Carter (2009-2012). Carter scored 1,437 points in three seasons for Memphis after transferring from the University of Georgia. Hearn is currently the third-highest scoring Tiger coached by Melissa McFerrin. Former teammate Nicole Dickson (2009-13) is 10th on the all-time points list and leads all Memphis players who have played

for Coach McFerrin. Then it’s Carter, and her 1,437 points, followed by Hearn. WORKING AGAINST BIGS IN FINAL TWO REGULAR SEASON GAMES Memphis will be dealing with some size in its final two regular season games. Everyone knows about UConn’s size, but on Monday night, the Tigers host an SMU team with a trio of Australian freshmen that will challenge the Tiger posts. SMU has 6-5 freshman Stephanie Collins, 6-3 forward Alicia Froling and 6-2 forward Keely Froling. The Tigers have just one player over 6-2 on their roster and that is freshman post Alisha Celestine, who has appeared in just two games this season. FUQUA-BEY EMERGES AS THIRD SCORER The Tigers’ coaching staff challenged junior Asianna Fuqua-Bey to look to score more this season after building her playing time on defense and rebounding in her first two seasons. She has offered glimpses of rising to that challenge as of late. She finished with 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the loss to Tulsa, and averaged 15.0 ppg in the two meetings against the Golden Hurricane. But the junior has had some foul issues as of late, playing under 30 minutes in each of the last four games. She was in foul trouble in the road win at Houston, in the home win over UCF and in the home loss last week against Tulsa. She seemed to be in the clear in the loss at Tulane, but then rolled over her ankle playing defense in the first half and played limited minutes the rest of the game on a heavily taped ankle. Prior to those foul issues, she had played 30 or more minutes in nine of 12 conference games. The last time she played 30 or more minutes? The last game against UConn back at the end of January. LOOKING FOR BENCHMARK POINTS Mooriah Rowser and Asianna Fuqua-Bey are informally in a race to be the next Tiger to 1,000 career points. Neither will get there this year, but both could pass other benchmarks on their way this season. Fuqua-Bey needs nine more points for her 700th career point, while Rowser is 41 points shy of her 600th point. Rowser led Memphis in scoring against Tulsa, finishing with 17 points on 7-for-15 shooting. After going eight straight games without hitting a three-point field goal, Rowser has now hit a triple in five of the last six games, including a 3-for-4 mark from beyond the arc in the road win at Houston. Rowser is 23.9 percent from beyond the arc for the season, but is shooting 38.1 percent (8-for-21) from there over the last six games. GETTING OFFENSE ON TRACK Memphis actually shot better than Tulsa did in their last outing, but still suffered a loss. Memphis was 44.6 percent from the floor, compared to 42.6 percent for Tulsa, and both teams landed five triples in the second conference clash. But Tulsa was 14-for18 from the free-throw line, while Memphis, who ranks 11th in the American in free throw percentage, was 7-for-10. Those seven extra points were clutch for Tulsa in the three-point (65-62) win. That marked the first time all season the Tigers suffered a loss when out-shooting their opponents from the field. The Tigers are now 11-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play when posting the better shooting percentage. CREIGHTON NAMED TO AMERICAN HONOR ROLL Freshman post Cheyenne Creighton was named to the American Athletic Conference honor roll on Monday, becoming the fourth different Tiger to earn a spot on the league’s weekly honor roll.

Creighton averaged 11 points and four rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for Memphis last week. After scoring a career-best 12 points in the win over UCF on Wednesday, she made her first career start at Tulane, finishing with 11 points and shooting 5-for-7 from the field. The Pickering, Ontario, native is the lone Memphis freshman to appear in all 26 games for the Tigers this season. STRETCHING THE DEFENSE Junior guard Ariel Hearn has developed a reputation for not being afraid to shoot the three. She has landed 154 triples for her career and already ranks sixth on the Memphis career list in three point field goals made. She needs just six more to move to the top five alltime (where fellow Memphis native Paris Leonard, 2005-09) is currently sitting with 160 makes. DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR WRIGHT OFF THE BENCH Junior forward Brianna Wright came off the bench in the loss at Tulane and posted her fifth double-double of the season. Wright finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds and tied a career high with four steals in 24 minutes of play. The four steals pushed the junior past the 100 steal mark for her entire collegiate career (including one year in junior college at Chipola Junior College). She has also moved within 154 points of scoring 1,000 total career collegiate points (again, including her totals from Chipola JC) heading in to the second Tulsa contest. Tiger Double-Doubles Brianna Wright vs. Missouri State, 11 pts, 16 reb (11/14/14) Courtney Powell vs. Samford, 11 pts, 11 reb (11/16/14) Mooriah Rowser vs. SIU, 13 pts, 10 reb (11/26/14) Brianna Wright vs. UALR, 14 pts, 16 reb (11/29/14) Asia Fuqua-Bey vs. MVSU, 12 pts, 12 reb (12/19/14) Brianna Wright vs. Temple, 18 pts, 14 reb. (12/28/14) Brianna Wright vs. Cincinnati, 11 pts, 14 reb. (1/14/15) Brianna Wright at Tulane, 12 pts, 11 reb. (2/21/15) NO SENIOR DISCOUNTS Memphis does not have a senior on its roster, so it has fallen to the junior trio of Ariel Hearn, Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Mooriah Rowser to serve as the Tigers’ captains.

PAGE 4

WILDER-COCHRAN RETURNS TO LINEUP After missing three games with an injury suffered in the loss at Temple, Breigha Wilder-Cochran returned to the lineup, and the starters group, in the Tulane game. .After missing games against UConn, Houston and UCF, the sophomore guard finished with seven points, three assists and a steal in 24 minutes in her return to the court. She then missed the Tulsa game on Tuesday night. It’s been a tough season for Wilder-Cochran. The returning point guard suffered an injury in the first practice of the fall and missed a lot of preseason work, then suffered a hand injury in the loss at USF on New Year’s Eve and missed the next three games. She’s missed eight games (seven conference games) this season due to injury. She missed both games against Tulsa. CAREER NIGHT FOR CREIGHTON VS UCF Freshman forward Cheyenne Creighton got the Memphis bench powered up early in the win over UCF, Wednesday night. Creighton played a career-high 31 minutes, which was much-needed for the Tigers as junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey played just three minutes in the opening half due to foul trouble and finished with just 14 minutes in the game and four fouls. Creighton posted a career-best 12 points on 6-for13 shooting, adding four rebounds, one assist and a block. Behind her effort off the bench, the Tiger UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

bench out-scored UCF, 27-4.

RECORD BREAKDOWN

CHANGE OF ROLE FOR HEARN In the early part of the conference schedule, the Tigers utilized Ariel Hearn mostly at the two-guard spot. The hand injury suffered by Breigha Wilder-Cochran in the first game with USF changed that. Memphis started freshman Amber Holmes in the next game (a win vs. East Carolina), but in the three games that Wilder-Cochran missed, Hearn ran the point for the Tigers. LEARNING TO WIN CLOSE GAMES A young Tiger squad is still learning how to pull out close games. Of the Tigers’ 14 losses, seven have been by single digits, including the three-point loss to Tulsa on Tuesday night. Those seven Memphis single digit losses have added up to a combined 30 points. Memphis is 6-8 in single-digit games this season. MEMPHIS FINISHES FALL SEMESTER IN A FLOURISH IN THE CLASSROOM The Tigers had a strong finish to the fall semester. Six players finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester (Cheyenne Creighton, Asianna FuquaBey, Ariel Hearn, Amber Holmes, Mooriah Rowser, Brianna Wright) and freshman Amber Holmes posted the highest team GPA of the fall at 3.87. The Tigers’ fall team GPA was 3.087. HEARN GOES FOR 30 IN LOSS Ariel Hearn posted her first career 30-point game in the 57-53 loss to USF. That 30 points was the best single scoring game total for a player in the American Athletic Conference since league play began and was the first time a Memphis player has hit the 30-plus point mark since Nicole Dickson scored 34 in a win over Wright State back in January of 2013. Hearn’s 30-point effort earned her a spot on the American Athletic Conference Weekly honor roll for a third time this season. BUILDING OFF TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE SLATE Memphis has a 20-win season and a post-season bid as a team goal this year. And the Tigers’ have been well-tested to date, having already faced eight teams in the top 100 in the latest NCAA RPI Report. In all, Memphis will play 11 games this season against teams currently ranked in the top 100. RPI.......................................................... Those eight boards pushed her past 500 for her career, making her just the 25th player in Memphis’ 43-year women’s basketball history to have over 500 career points and 500 career rebounds. DOUBLE DOUBLE-DIGIT REBOUNDING The Temple game marked the second time this year that the Tigers have had two players post double-digit rebounds. In addition to Brianna Wright’s 14 rebounds against Temple, Asianna Fuqua-Bey added 12 rebounds, her second consecutive double-digit rebounding night of the season. The second triple pushed her past the 1,000 career point mark, making her the 23rd player in school history to score a grand or more. She added a pair of threes in the second half, which gave her the 100th triple of her three-year Tiger career. She is just the ninth player in school history to connect on 100 career threes. Getting to her 1,000th career point in her 64th career game means that Hearn was the fifth-fastest in Memphis history to get to the 1,000 career point mark. She tied the mark set by Tamika Whitmore, who went on to become the second Memphis women’s basketball player drafted in to the WNBA, earning WNBA All-Star honors while she played in Indiana.
