UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS
THREE GAMES IN SEVEN DAYS Memphis will play three games in seven days to close out the 2013-14 season, starting at USF, Tuesday night. Memphis needs to win out its final three games of the season in order to make a run at the No. 6 spot in the standings. Memphis’ fate is also in the hands of Cincinnati and Temple. Temple is currently in the sixth spot, and with a series sweep and a two-game lead in hand, the only way Memphis could catch and pass the Owls is by winning the last three games of the regular season slate and by the Owls dropping their last three games (at Rutgers, at UCF, vs. Houston). The Tigers play at Houston, Saturday, then host Cincinnati, Monday, in the regular season finale. Cincinnati has a one-game lead on the Tigers and has just two regular season games remaining. The Bearcats host Louisville and play at Memphis. IN OUR LAST MEETING Senior post Pa’Sonna Hope had a career-best 16 rebounds in the last meeting with USF, but the Tigers were still out-rebounded 48-40 in the 71-58 loss to USF. Hope had nine offensive rebounds, but finished with just six points in the loss. Ariel Hearn finished with 16 points on 6-for-17 shooting, while Breigha Wilder-Cochran finished with 15 points on 3-for-12 shooting. Most of Wilder-Cochran’s points came at the free-throw line, where she was 8-for-10. SERIES HISTORY This is the 16th meeting between Memphis and USF. The Tigers lead the overall series, 12-4, but have lost two straight, including the earlier meeting in the fieldhouse this season. Memphis has not played in Tampa since the 200405 season, when the Tigers fell 72-58. Memphis is 4-3 all-time in games played in Tampa. TWO FOR 20 Ariel Hearn and Asianna Fuqua-Bey each scored 20 points in the Tigers’ loss to SMU on Saturday. That marked the first time Memphis has had two players go for 20 or more points since the same duo did it on the road at Tennessee Tech (12/14/13). Both players finished with 21 points in that game. LOOKING FOR BALANCE Melissa McFerrin has been very outspoken on the team’s need for better balance in the scoring column. The Tigers have seen bits and pieces emerge in the last couple of games, but are still trying to get multiple players on in the same night. Memphis expects double-digit points from sophomore guard Ariel Hearn, but is looking for 2 or 3 more players to step in the double-digit scoring. Pa’Sonna Hope scored 18 points in the loss to #3 Louisville, shooting 9-for-17. That caused McFerrin to return the senior to the starting lineup for the first time in six games, but then Hope struggled against SMU, scoring just two points and playing just 11 minutes as SMU’s Akil Simpson scored 10 of the Mustangs’ first 16 points inside. Fuqua-Bey emerged in the last game, shooting 10for-14 for her second career 20-point effort. Outside, freshman guard Mooriah Rowser also had a 20-point night in the loss to Louisville, shooting 3-for-15 from the field and finishing with her first 20plus point night of this season. WILDER-COCHRAN SETS FRESHMAN ASSIST RECORD Freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran had four assists in the loss to SMU Saturday. That pushed her to 110 assists on the season, breaking the Memphis freshman single season mark. That previous record of 109 was set by now-sophomore Ariel Hearn last season. That should hopefully be a record that stands for a while for the Tigers. With both Hearn and WilderCochran underclassmen on the Tiger roster, McFerrin should not need to rely as heavily on a freshman
point guard next season. LOOKING TO SNAP STREAK The Tigers have lost six straight games. The sixgame losing streak is the longest for a McFerrincoached Memphis team. Memphis not lost six straight games since the 2006-07 season (16 games). YOU GOT SWATTED Hope also posted three blocks in the loss to Louisville on Sunday. Heading in to the USF game, she now has 27 blocks on the season, which ranks fifth among the Memphis single season records for a member of the senior class. She passed Savannah Ellis’ mark of 26 from 2010-11 to move to fifth. She needs three more blocks to match former teammate Nicole Dickson’s mark of 30 from last year. On her two-year Tiger career, Hope has 62 blocks, which is seventh in the career record book at Memphis. Counting her 33 blocks from her two seasons at Ole Miss, she needs five more blocks to get to 100 for her entire college career. HEARN FEELING HELPFUL After posting a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists against #4/3 Louisville on Sunday, sophomore guard Ariel Hearn had 20 points and eight assists in the loss to SMU on Sunday. Hearn is five assists shy this season of the 100-assist mark. She would become the first Memphis player since LaToya Bullard to have back-to-back 100-assist seasons. Bullard had 127 assists in 2007-08, then missed 2008-09 to injury and came back to dish out 134 assists in 2009-10. HEARN WORKING TOWARD 1,000TH POINT With her three pointer in the second half, sophomore guard Ariel Hearn passed the 900 career point mark and now works toward her 1,000th career point. With 912 points on the books with at least four games remaining, it’ll be a feat for Hearn to get to 1,000 points this season. Needing 88 points over the final three regular season games and at least one guaranteed conference tournament game, Hearn needs to average 22 points per game to get to a grand this year. .Hearn has scored double-digit points in all but four games this year (23 of 27). LOSING AN EDGE ON THE GLASS .In 12 of 15 conference games, the Tigers have been upside down in rebounding. Memphis has outrebounded conference foes just twice (SMU, at UCF) and was even with UCF in the second meeting. GOODMAN GETTING MORE TIME Freshman post Brandi Goodman missed all of the Tigers’ pre-season conditioning and camp, but as the season as gone on, Goodman is catching up to her Tiger teammates. She played a career-high 26 minutes in the loss to SMU, finishing with eight points, six rebounds and two steals. SWAIN DRAWING DEFENSIVE ASSIGNMENTS Senior guard Jasbriell Swain has been asked to provide on-the-ball defense for some of the American’s best players as of late. Against Louisville, Swain played 12 minutes, spending most of the first half working on Shoni Schimmel. Saturday, she drew the assignment of Keena Mays. Swain played 26 minutes on Saturday, finishing with five points, three rebounds and three assists. DOWNTOWN! Hearn has converted 57 made triples this year. For her career, she already ranks in the Memphis career top 10 in three-point field goals made with 84, good for ninth all-time. She will have to get well over 100 before she moves up in the career records. The eighth place spot is at 131 (Kelly Herron, 1997-2001).

McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT
Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey
Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

FINDING A THIRD REBOUNDER Over the last five games, just two Tigers are averaging 5.0 or more rebounds a game. Pa’Sonna Hope leads the team with 7.8 rpg in the last five games, while Asia Fuqua-Bey has 7.2 rpg. The only other Tigers averaging three rebounds or more a game in that same five game stretch are Breigha Wilder-Cochran (3.2) and Brandi Goodman (3.3).
this season, including two double-overtime games. The Tigers are 1-1 in double overtime (both road games) and are 2-1 in overtime games with just one extra session (2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road). Memphis is now 13-12 in overtime games in school history and is 7-3 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. Wisconsin holds the NCAA record for overtime games in a season with seven in 1999, FYI.
STIFFENING UP THE DEFENSE Tiger opponents have shot over 50 percent from the field in each of the last two games (54.2 percent for Louisville and 57.1 percent for SMU). In six of the Tigers’ 15 conference contests, the opposition has hit over 50 percent from the floor (UConn twice, Rutgers once, Louisville twice and SMU on Saturday).
FUQUA-BEY EARNS REPEAT AMERICAN ATHLETIC WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Asia Fuqua-Bey was named to The American’s weekly honor roll after hitting the game-winning freethrows in overtime vs. No. 23 Rutgers and then leading the Tigers with 18 points in the win over Houston. It was the second time this season for Fuqua-Bey to earn a spot on the American Athletic Conference honor roll. She was also named to the honor roll Dec. 16th.
BENCH PRODUCTION & SHIFTING STARTERS With a 10-player roster (one of whom started the season as a walk-on but was awarded a scholarship -Jasbriell Swain), the Tigers’ shuffling of their starting lineup has affected their bench production. The bench has been out-scored by its counterpart in four of the last six games. The Tigers reversed that trend in the game against SMU, out-scoring the Mustangs’ bench 21-11 thanks to eight points from both Taylor Williams and Brandi Goodman and five points from Jasbriell Swain. SPEAKING OF THE STARTING LINEUP After going through the first 14 games of the year with just three different starting lineups, the Tigers have had six different lineups over the last eight games, either due to injury, disciplinary issues or just trying to get a hot hand into the lineup. That’s given Memphis seven different starting lineups this season. ROWSER BACK TO THE STARTING LINEUP Redshirt freshman Mooriah Rowser started the first 13 games of the season for Memphis. After a start against UCF on Jan. 29th, she slid out of the starting line-up for games at Rutgers and against USF. She stepped back in to the starting lineup in the loss at Temple and has now started four of the last six games. In the last five games, she is the team’s third-leading scorer, averaging 9.4 ppg and shooting 36.7 percent from the field averaging 8.2 ppg. HEARN LOOKING FOR 100TH CAREER PICK Ariel Hearn is known as a scorer. Last year, she was known for her ability to drive the ball and score through contact, this year, it’s for her work from the three-point line. The next part of her game to get some attention will be defense. She enters the SMU game with 97 career steals, four shy of the century mark. HEARN POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn posted a doubledouble in the loss to #4/3 Louisville, Sunday. She finished with 15 points, and added 10 assists. The double-digit assists is a season-high for Hearn and marks the second time in her career she has had 10 or more assists in a game. In her first collegiate game last year, she dished out 12 assists. That’s also the last time a Tiger has had double-digit assists in a game. That was also Hearn’s second career double-double. Her first was a 23 points, 10-rebound effort in a win over Tennessee Tech. OVERTIME? SURE, WHY NOT? Memphis has played five overtime games already

Against Texas A&M, Hearn finished with 19 points.
