On Deck The Tigers host UCF for a three-game Conference USA series at FedExPark. The three-game set begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. and continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Zurcher Leads Nation In Hitting With his .488 batting average, shortstop Chad Zurcher leads the nation. When the NCAA released the updated stats on March 29, Zurcher was hitting .480 on the season. With the pressure of being the nation’s leading hitter, Zurcher is 25-of-50 (.500) with four doubles, 11 RBI and 18 runs scored. Zurcher has been walked 11 times and hit by a pitch seven times in that 11game span. Zurcher had a 15-game hit streak ended on April 2, but Zurcher reached base three times in that game and scored all three times. Zurcher has two or more hits in 22 of the 35 games he has played in and has posted three or more hits in a game six times this season. Of his 61 hits, 14 are extra-base hits (12 2B, 2 3B). As a freshman, Zurcher hit .267 and had 51 hits in 53 games played. Last season, Zurcher hit .400 and collected 93 hits. On-Base Machine As the nation’s leading hitter with a .488 batting average, you would expect that Chad Zurcher would be on base a lot. With 25 walks, Zurcher not only hits to find his way on base, but he also leads the nation in on-base percentage at .599. When the NCAA released the national leaders on March 29, Zurcher had a .588 on-base percentage. Zurcher has reached base two or more times in 31 of the 35 games he has played in. Zurcher has been hit by a pitch 13 times this season. If Zurcher doesn’t get on base, he will put the ball in play as he sports a .616 slugging percentage. Zurcher has struck out just five times this season.

The Series With Middle Tennessee Memphis leads the all-time series with the Blue Raiders at 38-35. Middle Tennessee has won four of the last five in the series with the last Tiger victory coming in game two of the 2010 season. Memphis swept the two-game set from Middle Tennessee in the 2007 season. In the last 10 seasons, MTSU holds a 18-12 series edge and Memphis is 8-7 in home games during that span.

A Closer Look At Middle Tennessee Middle Tennessee enters the midweek series with a 12-24 record, but the Blue Raiders have won four of their last six games. MTSU claimed a series victory over No. 18 Troy this past weekend and three of their last four losses have come by one run, including a 1-0 loss to No. 1 Vanderbilt. Of the 24 losses on the season, 15 have come by three runs or less. The Blue Raiders were decimated by the MLB draft last season and field a young team as 21 of the 32 players on the club are underclassmen. Outfielder Will Skinner leads the squad with a .347 average at the plate. Skinner also leads the team with eight home runs and 27 RBI. The Blue Raiders are hitting at a .277 clip and have three players hitting above .300. MTSU has struggled to score runs as the club averages 4.64 runs per game. On the mound, the Blue Raiders have a 6.03 ERA. Three pitchers carry an ERA below 4.00 while five players have an ERA above 6.00. MTSU has struck out 187 batters on the year, but has walked 177. Middle Tennessee has 44 errors on the season and has a .967 fielding percentage. Weekend Warriors With the series sweep at UAB, Memphis improved to 19-7 in weekend series. The Tigers have four weekend sweeps this season, the most in a season since the 1994 squad had seven three-game sweeps and posted a 52-11 record. The 2011 club is only the fifth team in program history to record four sweeps in a season. The 1994 squad holds the record at seven sweeps and the 1981 team had five sweeps and finished that season 48-11-1. In 1977, the Tigers had four sweeps and finished the season at 3414. The 2007 squad posted four sweeps and finished with a 36-27 record. Mirror Image The last time the Tigers earned a series sweep at UAB was in the 2007 season. Memphis entered that series at 19-14 on the season after dropping a midweek home-and-home series to Murray State. The U of M travelled to Young Memorial Field this season with an identical 19-14 record and left with a 22-14 record. Timely Hitting When looking closer at the time of games, Memphis has needed some timely hitting. The Tigers have come through this season with two outs as the offense has produced 99, two-out RBI this season. The U of M had 95, two-out RBI at this point last season and was batting .287 (116404) with two outs. The Tigers have a .310 (126406) average with two outs this year. In C-USA games this season, the Tigers are hitting .240 with two outs and have 15 two-out RBI. Memphis has 22 home runs this season and 12 have come with two outs in an inning. T.J. Rich leads the U of M with 18, two-out RBI and three other Tigers have 10 or more two-out RBI.

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL

Middle Tennessee Memphis

110 100 120 - 6 13 1 010 103 101 - 7 17 1

Senior first baseman Trey Wiedman’s gamewinning single capped a 17-hit offensive barrage as Memphis edged Middle Tennessee, 7-6, in the club’s first win at the newly redesigned FedExPark. Wiedman’s game-winner could not have happened without strong offensive outings from the Tigers’ top four hitters (Drew Martinez, Chad Zurcher, Adam McClain and Wiedman) and sophomore Jacob Wilson. All five collected multiple hits in the game. Martinez, McClain and Wilson all had three hits. Wilson posted three RBI and scored twice. He drove in runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings. A two-run home run in the eighth inning by Middle Tennessee’s Justin Miller knotted the contest at six-all, setting up the Tigers’ dramatic final at-bat. Martinez punched a one-out single to left and Chad Zurcher successfully advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt. However, on the play, Blue Raiders pitcher Tyler Hyde was unable to field the ball cleanly and Zurcher beat the throw. McClain then loaded the sacks with a single to right, before Wiedman’s shot to the right center gap scored Martinez for the win. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Memphis put up a three-run inning to take control of the game. Wiedman’s double to left center set off a five-hit inning and Memphis got consecutive hits from Wilson, Derrick Thomas, Robby Graham and Phillip Chapman. Graham’s RBI-double put Memphis on top 4-3. It didn’t take the Blue Raiders long to break through the scoring column. MTSU’s All-American centerfielder Bryce Brentz ignited the rally with an infield single and moved to second on a balk by U of M starter Ryan Fraser. Blue Raider leftfielder Will Skinner poked a single up the middle to score Brentz for the game’s first run. MT went up 2-0 in the second after Justin Guidry led off the frame by legging out an infield single to shortstop. The Blue Raiders DH stole second base and was allowed to advance to third when Tiger catcher Phillip Chapman’s throw sailed wide of the bag and into centerfield. He scored on an infield groundout by Justin Miller. Senior leftfielder Tyler Huelsing connected for his fourth hit in five at-bats when he led off the bottom of the second with a double to left center. The double was Huelsing third of the season and helped Memphis cut the MT lead in half 2-1. With Huelsing on second, freshman Jacob Wilson grounded an RBI-single up the middle. Wilson came up big in the fourth, blasting the first home run in FedExPark history. The sophomore belted a Daniel Palo offering deep over the centerfield wall to cut the Tigers’ deficit to 3-2 in the fourth. Tiger starter Ryan Fraser, who went six and two-thirds innings, struck out six and allowed three runs on 10 hits. He exited the game with a 5-3 lead. Sophomore Heith Hatfield then took the ball for the remainder of the game to pick up the win.

Tigers Capture Program Victory No. 1600 With the recent research gathered by Memphis stat historian John Guniozzo, the Tiger baseball program claimed win No. 1600 all-time on March 12 in game two of the doubleheader against Saint Peter’s. After fielding a team for the first time in 1913, Memphis has a record of 16141211-16 all-time. Off To A Good Start Memphis scored six runs in the second inning against Ole Miss on April 5 and ended up with a 9-2 victory over the regional rival. Memphis again scored early on April 8 against Southern Miss and the three-run first helped the Tigers earn a 6-5 victory over the 14th-ranked Golden Eagles. Just in the last 14 games, the Tigers have pounced on opponents early, producing 50 runs in the first three innings. The only games in the 14-game span that Memphis didn’t score in the first three innings was the 3-2 seven-inning loss to Mississippi Valley State and game two of the three game set at UAB. On the season, Memphis has scored 109 runs in the first three innings and when the Tigers score first, the U of M is 16-7. On the mound, Memphis has limited its opponents to just 38 runs in the first three innings. New Bats Hurting The Tigers?? Although college baseball switched to the new BBCOR bats, the Memphis offense has had no trouble adjusting to the new bat. The Tiger offense leads C-USA with a .319 batting average and is tied for ninth in the country. After averaging more than five hits per game higher, Memphis has seven (395) fewer hits than it did at this point last season (402). The Tigers are minus nine with 22 home runs compared the 2010 squad that had 31 at this point last season. The Tigers have scored double-digit runs in 11 games. Memphis has pounded out doubledigit hits in 23 games, including 12 of the last 14 games. The Tigers have cut down on the strikeouts with 63 fewer strikeouts than a season ago and the U of M has walked 36 more times than the 2010 club. Top-10 Chase Chad Zurcher continues to climb the charts for hits in a career as he moved to sixth with 223 career hits. Zurcher needs seven hits to tie for fifth. Drew Martinez is right on Zurcher heels as he has climbed to eighth all-time with 207 career hits. The dynamic duo has ascended in the record book for runs scored as well, each tied at ninth all-time with 134 runs scored. Zurcher (47) and Martinez (43) are already in the top 10 for steals with Zurcher in ninth and Martinez in 10th. Jacob Wilson is climbing the record books for career doubles as he is currently in eighth with 44.

2011 BASEBALL GAME NOTES

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL BY THE NUMBERS Memphis has homered two or more times in five games.

5

In the third inning, opponents have scored just six runs against Memphis, the least in any inning.

6 13 17 23 99 109

Quality starts by the Tiger pitching staff this season. The Tigers have picked off 17 runners this season, first among C-USA clubs. Memphis has turned 23 double plays this season The Tigers have 99 two-out RBI this season. Don’t be fooled, but Memphis has scored 81 runs since April 1. (Last 7 games) Chad Zurcher leads the nation with a batting average of .531.

.488 1,614 1,755

Memphis Baseball has claimed 1,614 wins all-time. Tiger Baseball raised $1,755 during “Mustache March” All donations were given to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis.

2,842

Since 1913, Memphis has played 2,842 games.

Caught Napping Senior southpaw Ryan Holland leads Conference USA with eight pick-offs this season. Holland has picked off two base runners in two of his outings (Kennesaw State and Saint Peter’s) and added another against Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois, Alcorn State and Southern Miss. As a pitching staff, Memphis leads C-USA with 17 pickoffs. In Like A Lamb, Out Like A Lion As the saying normally states, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, but for Tiger Baseball it had the opposite effect. After a 5-2 record in February, the U of M was 8-9 in March. April should be good for the Tigers as they will play 15 of the scheduled 20 games on the monthly calendar in the Bluff City. The Tiger bats were warm in February as the Tigers hit .354 on the month, but the bats cooled off in March with the Tigers carrying a .280 average. So far in April, the Tigers are hitting .348 as a club. Memphis had just three errors in February, but March saw the Tigers defense collect 17 errors. Under head coach Daron Schoenrock, the U of M is 56-66 in the month of April with the best record coming in the 2007 season at 12-5. Get The Lead-Off Man On Base Numbers support the notion that getting a leadoff batter on base increases the likelihood of scoring runs in an inning. That has certainly been the case for the Tigers in 2011. Memphis has put its leadoff batter on base 45 percent (141-313) of the time and when the leadoff man reaches base, Memphis has scored 70 runs. In the three game set with Alcorn State, the leadoff man reached 13 times and scored nine times. Tiger leadoff man Drew Martinez has reached base in 27 of his 57 (.474) plate appearances as a leadoff hitter. Chad Zurcher sports a 20-for-30 (.667) mark as a lead-off man.

Walking In Memphis Memphis has taken 164 walks this season and took the free base 33 times in the first six games. Jacob Wilson and Chad Zurcher have each tied a single-game record with four walks in a game this season. Zurcher and Drew Martinez lead the team with 25 walks on the year while T.J. Rich is second with 24 walks. Seven of the nine regulars in the Tiger lineup have walked 10 or more times this season. “Let’s Get Some Runs” As the former Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Caray would say during the seventh inning stretch at Wrigley Field, the Tigers are in need of some runs following the seventh inning stretch. Of the 252 runs scored this season, the U of M has scored 39 after the seventh inning. When leading after seven innings, Memphis is 20-2 and when the game is tied or the Tigers trail, Memphis is 3-11 this season. The U of M earned their first come-from-behind victory, 6-5, on April 8 against 14th-ranked Southern Miss. The Tigers earned two come-from-behind wins in extra innings at UAB. Getting Off The Schneid After going 5-for-24 (.208) with runners in scoring position at East Carolina, the Tigers have gotten off the schneid. Memphis is hitting .374 (68-182) since that series and the Tigers have produced 109 runs since April 1. On the season, the U of M is hitting .329 (147-447). After earning a sweep at UAB, the Tigers are hitting .297 (30-101) in league play with runners in scoring position. Chad Zurcher leads Memphis with a .533 average with runners in scoring position. 2011 BASEBALL GAME NOTES

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL daron schoenrock Head Coach  7th Year 169-211, 194-263

The 16th baseball coach in school history, Daron Schoenrock enters his seventh season at the controls of the Memphis baseball program armed with his most experienced Tiger club yet. One of the top head coaches in the business, Schoenrock led his 2010 team to the program’s best-ever finish in Conference USA history and is poised to make a run at a second NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011. Evident in his “Total Person” approach to coaching, Schoenrock’s Tigers placed four Tigers on C-USA’s All-Conference squad and a league-best four players on the league’s All-Academic Team. With Schoenrock at the helm of the Memphis program the Tigers were able to end the 13-year postseason hiatus and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. The 2007 squad went 36-27, marking the most wins since 1994. Since coming to Memphis, Schoenrock has brought in three nationally-ranked recruiting classes, while seven Tigers have been drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Eight players have gone on to play professional baseball either through the draft or free agency.

Milestone Victory Now in his seventh year at the helm of the Memphis baseball program, head coach Daron Schoenrock claimed his milestone 150th win as the Tigers’ skipper on Feb. 20th against Evansville. Schoenrock passed the late Al Brown at No. 3 on Memphis’s all-time coaching wins ledger with his 157th career victory on March 15 against UT Martin. Schoenrock needs only six wins to reach a 200th career victory. Fantastic Four The U of M pitching staff sports a 3.92 ERA this season and when the Tigers score four or more runs, Memphis is 21-3 and when scoring less than four Memphis is 1-11. Roughly 60 percent of the Tigers 252 runs (149 of 252) have come in the first four innings. Double Your Pleasure Phillip Chapman leads the club with 15 doubles this season. As a team, Memphis has 82 doubles this season. Chad Zurcher is second on the team with 12 doubles and Drew Martinez has 11 doubles. Chapman ranks tied for second in C-USA with his 15 doubles. Home Cookin’ The Tigers begin a five-game homestand this week with hopes of protecting the home turf. The Tigers are 15-6 at FedExPark this season. The U of M is 32-16 at FedExPark and has won 21 of the last 24 games at the renovated ballpark. In head coach Daron Schoenrock’s tenure, the Tigers are 78-77 at home.

Moll-ing Them Down Freshman southpaw Sam Moll has been mowing down opposing hitters in his first season in the Blue and Gray. After four appearances in the bullpen, Moll has made four-straight starts in midweek games for the Tigers. In those starts, Moll has 32 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched. Moll posted seven scoreless innings and earned his second victory on the mound in the 9-2 victory over Ole Miss on April 5. On the season, Moll has fanned 42 batters and he sports a 2.27 ERA. Rung Up Tiger hurler Dan Langfield struck out 16 batters at Kennesaw State on Feb. 25. His 16 strikeouts were the second-most in school history and CUSA single-game history. On the season, Langfield leads the Tiger pitching staff with 44 strikeouts which ranks third among C-USA pitchers. 1-2 Punch The Tiger duo of Drew Martinez and Chad Zurcher are back in form after leading the Tigers to its first Conference USA Tournament appearance since 2007. Both players were honored as 2011 Preseason All-C-USA performers. The Tigers All-C-USA tandem, which combined for 190 hits, 113 runs, 39 stolen bases and a .388 batting average in 2010, picked up where they left off, batting .404, with 110 hits and 71 runs scored this year. The duo has claimed 25 steals on the base paths and has 25 extra-base hits.

What A Difference A Year Makes Comparing stats from this season to last shows some improvement in some key areas for the Tigers this season. Most notably, the Tigers have a .977 fielding percentage this season compared to .952 this time a year ago. With 31 errors this season, Memphis has improved its error total from 67 a season ago and allowed just 18 unearned runs compared to 61 this time a year ago. On the mound, the U of M has shaved off nearly two runs per game off its ERA with a 3.92 team ERA compared to 5.81 this time last season. The Tigers, who rank ninth nationally with a .319 average, have improved upon last season’s average of .308 at this point. The largest statistical difference with the 2011 club compared to the 2010 squad is the run differential. The 2010 squad was minus 16 runs at this point last season, but this year, Memphis is a plus 94.

Where Is The Production Coming From? When looking closely at game-by-game box scores, Memphis has gotten most of its offensive firepower from the first four batters in the lineup. This season, the first four hitters are batting .340. The first four batters have provided 47 percent (110-232) of the clubs RBI this season and 53 percent (133-252) of the runs scored. When the first four batters in the lineup collect four or more hits, the Tigers are 20-8 this season. Four is the magic number in runs scored as the Tigers are 15-0 when the first four batters account for four or more runs. The Tigers first four batters have hit .250 or better in 28 of the 36 games this season and Memphis is 20-8 in those games. What About The Bottom Of The Order? With the top of the order producing just over half of the runs this season, what is the bottom of the order doing you may ask. The 7-8-9 hitters are batting .303 on the season and have 62 RBI. The 7-8-9 hitters have scored 67 runs for the Tiger offense and when those hitters score three or more times, Memphis is 11-1. When the last three batters in the order hit at a .250 clip or higher, Memphis is 20-3 on the season. All In The Family This year’s edition of Tiger baseball showcases a unique twist for head coach Daron Schoenrock. This roster features a second Schoenrock, as Daron’s son Erik is a freshman left-handed pitcher on the 2011 squad. Erik earned a win against Saint Peter’s on March 13 to give his father his 156th win at the U of M. With that win, Daron tied the late Al Brown for third all-time on Memphis’ coaching wins ledger.

“Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” As the B.J. Thomas lyric goes, rain drops keep falling on Tiger Baseball. Memphis has already had two rain outs this season. The rain out with Oral Roberts on March 4 will be made up as Arkansas-Pine Bluff will visit FedExPark for a 6:30 p.m. game on May 10. The rained out game with Auburn on March 9 will not be made up, but head coach Daron Schoenrock added a doubleheader with Mississippi Valley State on March 30 to make up the rain out. The Tigers schedule was changed once again with anticipated rainfall in the Greenville, N.C. area as the Tigers played a doubleheader against East Carolina on March 26. The U of M played its fourth double dip of the season on April 16 after game one of the set at UAB was postponed due to bad weather. The Tigers are 6-2 in doubleheaders this season and Memphis improved to 19-13 in doubleheaders under head coach Daron Schoenrock.
