MILLINGTON, Tenn. - University of Memphis pitcher Brennon Martin struck out a career-best nine hitters and scattered seven hits over seven innings to lead the Tigers to a 6-3 seriesopening victory over SIU-Edwardsville in non-conference action, Friday night at USA Stadium. Memphis improves to 13-19 overall and 7-1 on Friday nights. Martin retired the last 11 batters he faced, including sitting the Cougars down in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, in a 93-pitch gem. He handed the ball over to Duke Williams, who fanned three and held SIUE scoreless for the final two innings to record his second save of the year. The Tigers out-hit the Cougars 10-8 in the series opener. Adam McClain, Shawn Ablett and Tyler Huelsing had two hits each. Ablett scored twice, while Huelsing drove in a pair. MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Memphis freshman Heith Hatfield struck out seven in seven innings, and Cole Shelton erased a one-run deficit with a grand slam in the seventh inning, as the Tigers rallied late for a 5-1 victory over SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday afternoon at USA Stadium. Memphis clinched the series with win and improves to 14-19 on the year. SIUE drops to 6-21. Trailing 1-0 and being no-hit through six innings, redshirt freshman Adam McClain broke up the no-hit bid with a single to leftfield. Shawn Ablett was then hit by a pitch and Tyler Huelsing reached on a catcher’s interference. That set up a two-out opportunity for Cole Shelton and the senior came through in a big way, blasting a grand slam over the left centerfield wall to put Memphis on top for good, 4-1. All four of the Tigers seventh-innings scores were unearned due to the catcher’s interference error. In just his second start of the year, Hatfield scattered six hits and gave up just one run. While the Memphis offense was unable to muster a hit, the freshman kept the Tigers in the ballgame, holding off the Cougars in the third through seventh innings to pick up his first collegiate victory. Hatfield (1-3) retired the Cougars in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings. He retired 17 of the last 20 batters faced before handing the ball over to Marcus Barnes in the eighth. Barnes was perfect in two innings to pick up his first save in a Tiger uniform. Game Three SIU-Edwardsville Memphis

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Brach Davis scattered six hits and struck out a career-high eight batters in six innings, but the Memphis offense struck out 10 times and left eight runners in scoring position in a 3-2, rain-shortened loss to SIU-Edwardsville Sunday afternoon at USA Stadium. The Tigers won Friday and Saturday to win the series. After SIUE went ahead 1-0 in the second, the Tigers had multiple opportunities to score the equalizer in the bottom of the inning. Brett Bowen and Tyler Huelsing collected singles in successive at-bats to lead off the inning. Cole Shelton successfully executed a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, but Jacob Wilson struck out and Chris Newsom lined out to left to end the inning. Memphis was afforded another shot at tying the game in the third after Adam McClain drove a one-out triple to centerfield. This time SIUE pitcher Spencer Patton retired the next two Tigers on strikes to quiet the scoring threat.

MEMPHIS BASEBALL FREEBIE WATCH Head Coach Daron Schoenrock employs the “freebie” award for each game. This season, each set of games notes will keep an eye on the freebie award. There are three key goals to the freebie award: 1) Memphis has the only big inning with which three or more runs are scored. 2) Score seven or more runs. 3) Hold opponents to six or less runs. Below is a table that shows the Tigers’ record in those three categories last season and in Coach Schoenrock’s tenure (Since 2005). CATEGORY

TOP-10 CHASE Heading into the 2012 season, Jacob Wilson and Adam McClain are in pursuit of top-10 positions in the record books for career numbers. Wilson (183) and McClain (173) are 13th and 14th, respectively, in career hits. Wilson has 47 career doubles which ties for fifth all-time. The two seniors are also climbing the charts in games played as Wilson (165) and McClain (160) could each eclipse the top-five with 35 games played this season. With 30-plus RBI this season, Wilson could inch closer to the top-five in the category as he begins the season with 125 on his career. HELP CHOOSE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE GAME This season, each game recap on GoTigersGo.com will feature a player and pitcher of the game. Fans can help choose the Player and Pitcher of the game by nominating a student-athlete on Twitter, Facebook or via the live chat. The Tigers looked to put up a big inning in the fifth inning after Drew Martinez led things off with a double. Ablett drew a oneout walk and the duo posted a double-steal to put runners on second and third with one out. Patton again quieted the rally with a strikeout. Bowen was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Memphis scored its only run of the inning on a catcher’s interference error.

2,860

Tigers have played 2,860 games in the 99-year history of the program.

REPLACING THE 1-2 PUNCH Entering the 2012 season, one of the biggest concerns will be replacing the offensive production at the top of the order left by the departure of draft picks Drew Martinez and Chad Zurcher. The duo combined to hit over .380 last season and scored over 100 runs. SOUND DEFENSE AT THE HOT CORNER One thing head coach Daron Schoenrock and staff can count on this season, the steady defense by CUSA Preseason All-C-USA selection Jacob Wilson at third base. Starting at the hot corner in 140 of his 165 games played, Wilson has committed 31 errors in 506 chances over his three year career. Last season, Wilson turned in his best performance with the leather as he finished the year with three errors in 152 chances. MEMPHIS BASEBALL A CLOSER LOOK AT MIDWEEK WOES The U of M carried a 4-9 record in midweek contests last season and below, we take a closer look at the stats behind the differential. The far right column calculates the differential between midweek and weekend games.

D ARON S CHOENROCK Head Coach  8th Year 176-222, 202-274

The 16th baseball coach in school history, Daron Schoenrock enters his eighth season at the controls of Memphis baseball armed with a club featuring both experienced players and a talented group of newcomers. One of the top head coaches in the business, Schoenrock led his 2011 team to the program’s fifth 30-win season since joining Conference USA in 1995. Evident in his “Total Person” approach to coaching, Schoenrock’s Tigers placed three players on C-USA’s all-conference squad, including C-USA Player of the Year and C-USA Male Athlete of the Year Chad Zurcher. Two student-athletes also earned a place on the league’s All-Academic Team in 2011.

With Schoenrock at the helm of the Memphis program, the Tigers were able to end the 13-year postseason hiatus and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. The 2007 team went 36-27, marking the most wins since 1994 and, combined with the 2006 campaign, represented the first back-toback winning seasons since 1994 and 1995. Since coming to Memphis, Schoenrock has brought in three nationally-ranked recruiting classes, while 11 Tigers have been drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Twelve players have gone on to play professional baseball either through the draft or free agency.
