Tigers Travel To Atlanta for Panther Invitational After a 3-2 start to the 2011 season, the University of Memphis softball team travels to Atlanta, Ga., for the Panther Invitational hosted by Georgia State University. The Tigers open play on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. (EST) against Appalachian State followed by a 4:45 p.m. match-up with Georgia State. On Sunday, Memphis battles Lipscomb and will then play in the consolation or championship game at 2:30 p.m. Live Coverage All five games Memphis will play in the FIU Combat Classic can be followed through live stats provided by CBS College Sports GameTracker. On Deck The Tigers will play their first home game of the season with a doubleheader against Alabama A&M on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. Following Wednesday’s games, Memphis will travel to the west coast for the Stanford Nike Invitational that begins on Friday, Feb. 25. The six team field features Memphis, Kentucky, Stanford, North Dakota State, UC Davis and Colorado State. Coach Thees Garners Win No. 300 When Memphis took the field last Friday against North Florida, head coach Windy Thees was seeking her 300th career victory. Carly Hummel threw a no hitter to help Thees earn her 300th career victory. Thees is in her 11th season as a skipper with a 302-231 record. In just six seasons at the program she built from scratch, Thees has compiled a record of 139-139 at the U of M.

Opening Weekend Success Behind a no-hit performance by sophomore pitcher Carly Hummel, Memphis improved to 4-2 in season-openers with a 3-0 victory over North Florida at the FIU Combat Classic in Miami, Fla. The Tigers rallied late, but DePaul scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to take the 6-5 victory over Memphis. In day two action, Memphis claimed its first ever victory over a ranked opponent with a 7-3 eighth inning victory over No. 22/24 Ohio State. After surrendering a threerun lead to FIU on Saturday, the Tigers faced a Kentucky team that was 3-0 in the tournament. Hummel earned her third victory on the weekend in a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats. With the 3-2 record on the weekend, Memphis improved to 14-12 on opening weekend. Memphis Sweeps C-USA Weekly Awards Carly Hummel’s no-hitter and a 3-0 record over the first weekend of the season earned the sophomore C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time in her career. Hummel enters play in the Panther Invitational with a 1.24 ERA, having allowed 12 hits and four earned runs in 22.2 innings pitched. Opponents are batting just .156 against her this season. Jessica Phillips picked up C-USA honors as well as she posted a .462 batting average to collect C-USA Hitter of the Week honors. Phillips blasted two home runs against DePaul and had five RBI’s in the opening weekend to enter week two riding a four-game hitting streak. With Hummel and Phillips earning the weekly awards, the U of M softball program records its first sweep of the weekly awards in program history. Phillips is the second player to earn the weekly hitting award in program history.
