JACKSON, Tenn. - Austin Peay touched Memphis pitchers for a season-high 19 hits, and the Tiger defense committed a season-high seven errors in a 14-7 loss at Pringles Park, Tuesday afternoon. Memphis threatened to put up a big inning in the bottom of the sixth after Zurcher led off with a double to the rightfield wall. Tyler Huelsing walked and Russell singled to load the bases. Jacob Wilson’s RBI-single to right center scored Zurcher and kept the bases loaded with no one out. However, APSU starter Eric Davis induced an infield fly and an inning-ending double play to end the Tiger’s rally. Consecutive RBI-doubles in the ninth by Zurcher, Heith Hatfield and Wilson, powered a four-run ninth inning for the 14-7 final. Zurcher led the Memphis offense with three hits and two RBI. Huelsing and Wilson finished the night with two hits each. The Tigers were out-hit 19-11 in the game. Memphis freshman Dan Langfield was hooked with the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) on nine hits in 3.1 innings. Tiger relievers Ben Paullus, Jonathan Jones and Marcus Barnes gave up a combined eight runs. Brandon Showmar and Marc Ashley held the Governors scoreless over the final two innings of play. APSU starter Eric Davis was effective in seven innings. He scattered seven hits and held Memphis to three runs. April 15, 2009 Austin Peay Memphis

JACKSON, Tenn. - Freshman Drew Martinez had a career night with four hits, but it was Adam McClain’s one-out single in the bottom of the 13th inning that plated Jacob Wilson with the game-winning run that gave Memphis a 5-4 win over Austin Peay Wednesday evening at Pringles Park in Jackson, Tenn. Wilson walked to lead off the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Newsom. The Govs elected to intentionally walk Martinez for the second consecutive at-bat to face McClain. McClain, who had a chance to end the game earlier, came through with the game-winning single. Dane Sharp picked up the win after tossing one scoreless inning of relief. JACKSON, Tenn. - Austin Peay scored runs in each of the first four innings and five Governors pitchers combined to limit Memphis to just six hits to snap the Tigers’ five-game win streak with a 4-2 decision at Pringles Park on Tuesday evening. Led by Will Hogue’s 4-for-5 performance, Austin Peay banged out a season-high 15 hits. The Govs got out early after Rafael Hill led of the game with a single up the middle and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by J.B. Gilbert. He swiped third and scored on a sac fly by Tyler Farrar. Memphis scored both of its runs off of hit batsmen. Brett Bowen was hit by a Jake Brisbin offering in the first and scored on an RBI-single by Trey Wiedman to tie the game and 1-1. Trailing 4-1 in the sixth, Eric Farrell was plunked. After advancing to second on a groundball out, and moving to third on a wild pitch, K.K. Chalmers, who led Memphis with two hits, singled up the middle to bring Farrell in and cut the deficit to two runs at 4-2. Chalmers then swiped the 100th base of his career to become just the third player in Conference USA history to reach the 100-stolen base plateau. Brach Davis (2-1) was the losing pitcher. He struck out three and gave up four runs on 11 hits in 5.1 innings. Four Tiger pitchers combined for eight strike outs. Andrew Haley logged three of them in 1.1 innings.

GOOD START, BUT WHAT ABOUT FINISH? Last season, the Tigers pounced on opponents early, outscoring its opponents 156-81 in the first three innings. In the sixth through the final out, Memphis was outscored 156-115. So far in 2012, Memphis is outscoring opponents 8-4 in the first three, but opponents have outscored the Tigers 8-5 after the fifth inning. FREEBIE WATCH Head Coach Daron Schoenrock employs the “freebie” award for each game. This season, each set of games notes will keep an eye on the freebie award. There are three key goals to the freebie award: 1) Memphis has the only big inning with which three or more runs are scored. 2) Score seven or more runs. 3) Hold opponents to six or less runs. Below is a table that shows the Tigers’ record in those three categories last season and in Coach Schoenrock’s tenure (Since 2005). CATEGORY

TOP-10 CHASE Heading into the 2012 season, Jacob Wilson and Adam McClain are in pursuit of top-10 positions in the record books for career numbers. Wilson (187) and McClain (180) are 13th and 14th, respectively, in career hits. Wilson has 48 career doubles which ties for fourth all-time. The two seniors are also climbing the charts in games played as Wilson (168) and McClain (163) could each eclipse the top-five with 35 games played this season. With 30-plus RBI this season, Wilson could inch closer to the top-five in the category with 129 on his career. TOP PERFORMERS OF THE WEEKEND Looking at stats from the series against SIU-Edwardsville, the performances by Adam McClain, Derrick Thomas and Jacob Wilson stand out. The trio all hit above .400 in the the three games and provided 11 of Memphis’ 19 RBI. The three players also scored 10 of the Tigers’ 20 runs and hit two home runs. McClain had two steals and Derrick Thomas added his first career steal. On the mound, Dan Langfield’s seven shutout innings in the start Saturday stood out. The junior struck out seven, walked two and allowed just two hits. Out of the bullpen, Tyler Farley made two appearances, totaling four innings. He allowed two hits and struck out four.

Tigers have 1,621 wins alltime. Tigers have played 2,863 games in the 99-year history of the program.

REPLACING THE 1-2 PUNCH Entering the 2012 season, one of the biggest concerns will be replacing the offensive production at the top of the order left by the departure of draft picks Drew Martinez and Chad Zurcher. The duo combined to hit over .380 last season and scored over 100 runs. Ethan Gross and Adam McClain were in the 1 and 2 spots in the lineup for the opening weekend and the duo combined to go 10-for-21 (.476) with a double, three RBI, eight runs scored, four walks and two steals.

TIGERS WITH RISP In the opening weekend, Memphis hit 12-for-42 (.286) with runners in scoring position (RISP). Taking away Saturday’s win where the Tigers went 5-for-11 with RISP, Memphis is hitting 7-for-31 (.226) on the young season. Looking closer, the Tigers hit 3-for-16 (.188) with two outs and runners in scoring position. TIGERS WITH TWO OUTS AND RISP DATE

MEMPHIS BASEBALL A CLOSER LOOK AT MIDWEEK WOES The U of M carried a 4-9 record in midweek contests last season and below, we take a closer look at the stats behind the differential. The far right column calculates the differential between midweek and weekend games.

D ARON S CHOENROCK Head Coach  8th Year 177-224, 203-275

The 16th baseball coach in school history, Daron Schoenrock enters his eighth season at the controls of Memphis baseball armed with a club featuring both experienced players and a talented group of newcomers. One of the top head coaches in the business, Schoenrock led his 2011 team to the program’s fifth 30-win season since joining Conference USA in 1995. Evident in his “Total Person” approach to coaching, Schoenrock’s Tigers placed three players on C-USA’s all-conference squad, including C-USA Player of the Year and C-USA Male Athlete of the Year Chad Zurcher. Two student-athletes also earned a place on the league’s All-Academic Team in 2011.

With Schoenrock at the helm of the Memphis program, the Tigers were able to end the 13-year postseason hiatus and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. The 2007 team went 36-27, marking the most wins since 1994 and, combined with the 2006 campaign, represented the first back-toback winning seasons since 1994 and 1995. Since coming to Memphis, Schoenrock has brought in three nationally-ranked recruiting classes, while 11 Tigers have been drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Twelve players have gone on to play professional baseball either through the draft or free agency.
