KENNESAW, Ga. - Sophomore pitcher Dan Langfield struck out 16 batters to lead Memphis (4-1) to a 5-4 series opening win over Kennesaw State (5-1) on Friday at Stillwell Stadium. Langfield’s 16 K’s are the second most in school history and tops his career-high six strikeouts against Portland on March 8, 2010. Langfield pitched seven and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and four runs. An Adam McClain RBI-single to left center gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. McClain earned his third RBI of the season and third baseman Jacob Wilson scored on the play after being hit by a pitch. After back-to-back singles led to two runs in the bottom half of the first, Langfield settled in by striking out the side in the bottom of the second. He then retired 16 of 19 batters over the course of five and two-thirds. Junior closer Ben Paullus entered the game with two outs in the inning after Kennesaw State hit an RBI-double off of Tiger freshman pitcher Erik Schoenrock. Paullus struck out the first batter he faced to end the threat and got the final three outs in the ninth for his second save of the season. February 26, 2011 Memphis 000 Kennesaw State 100

KENNESAW, Ga. - Kennesaw State used an eighth-inning solo home run from Andy Chriscaden to down the University of Memphis baseball squad 2-1 at Stillwell Stadium on Saturday. Senior southpaw Ryan Holland (1-1) scattered six hits over eight innings, but a solo shot with one out in the eighth would give Kennesaw State (6-1) the victory. Holland struck out seven and walked three in the game. Memphis (4-2) tied the tilt up after a two-out double down the left field line by Bryan Picou gave the Tigers their first hit of the game. Drew Martinez collected his sixth RBI with a single through the right side to drive in Picou from second. The Tigers left 10 runners on base in the game and had the bases loaded in the seventh with two out. Owls reliever Alan Buesnitz struck out Jacob Wilson to end the Memphis threat and gave way to closer B.J. Johnson in the ninth. Busenitz (1-0) earned the win after pitching three scoreless innings in relief of Kennessaw State starter Bryan Blough. Johnson earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth. CARDIAC KIDS The Tigers played several nail bitters last season and in games decided by two runs or less, Memphis finished 9-14, 7-6 in league play. The Tigers had five come-from-behind wins and nine one run losses. The Tigers are 0-1 in games decided by two runs or less this season. HOME COOKIN’ The Tigers open the 2012 schedule with 10 of their first 12 games at FedExPark. The U of M carries a 39-26 home record since the stadium became FedExPark in 2010. Coach Daron Schoenrock has guided the Tigers to a 100-101 record at home since taking over the program in 2005. After a rough 4-20 home record in 2005, Memphis has a 96-81 mark at home. GOOD START, BUT WHAT ABOUT FINISH? Last season, the Tigers pounced on opponents early, outscoring its opponents 156-81 in the first three innings. In the sixth through the final out, Memphis was outscored 156-115. So far in 2012, Memphis is outscoring opponents 8-4 in the first three, but opponents have outscored the Tigers 8-5 after the fifth inning. FREEBIE WATCH Head Coach Daron Schoenrock employs the “freebie” award for each game. This season, each set of games notes will keep an eye on the freebie award. There are three key goals to the freebie award: 1) Memphis has the only big inning with which three or more runs are scored. 2) Score seven or more runs. 3) Hold opponents to six or less runs. Below is a table that shows the Tigers’ record in those three categories last season and in Coach Schoenrock’s tenure (Since 2005). CATEGORY

The Tigers have two quality starts this season. Memphis had 17 last season.

3

Memphis has three two-out hits with RISP and two outs.

8

Memphis has eight doubles on the season

TOP PERFORMERS OF THE WEEKEND Looking at stats from the series against SIU-Edwardsville, the performances by Adam McClain, Derrick Thomas and Jacob Wilson stand out. The trio all hit above .400 in the three games and provided 11 of Memphis’ 19 RBI. The three players also scored 10 of the Tigers’ 20 runs and hit two home runs. McClain had two steals and Derrick Thomas added his first career steal. On the mound, Dan Langfield’s seven shutout innings in the start Saturday stood out. The junior struck out seven, walked two and allowed just two hits. Out of the bullpen, Tyler Farley made two appearances, totaling four innings. He allowed two hits and struck out four.

The Tigers picked off 20 base runners, most among C-USA clubs in 2011.

20 44

Memphis turned 44 double plays in 2011.

50

Errors committed by the Tigers last season, fewest among C-USA teams.

434

Memphis pitchers combined for 434 strikeouts, the secondstraight season with 400+ K’s.

.977

Tigers set new record with .977 fielding percentage last season.

REPLACING THE 1-2 PUNCH Entering the 2012 season, one of the biggest concerns will be replacing the offensive production at the top of the order left by the departure of draft picks Drew Martinez and Chad Zurcher. The duo combined to hit over .380 last season and scored over 100 runs. Ethan Gross and Adam McClain were in the 1 and 2 spots in the lineup for the opening weekend and the duo combined to go 10-for-21 (.476) with a double, three RBI, eight runs scored, four walks and two steals.

GAMES 4-6 D ARON S CHOENROCK Head Coach  8th Year 177-224, 203-275

The 16th baseball coach in school history, Daron Schoenrock enters his eighth season at the controls of Memphis baseball armed with a club featuring both experienced players and a talented group of newcomers. One of the top head coaches in the business, Schoenrock led his 2011 team to the program’s fifth 30-win season since joining Conference USA in 1995. Evident in his “Total Person” approach to coaching, Schoenrock’s Tigers placed three players on C-USA’s all-conference squad, including C-USA Player of the Year and C-USA Male Athlete of the Year Chad Zurcher. Two student-athletes also earned a place on the league’s All-Academic Team in 2011.

MEMPHIS BASEBALL TIGERS WITH RISP In the opening weekend, Memphis hit 12-for-42 (.286) with runners in scoring position (RISP). Taking away Saturday’s win where the Tigers went 5-for-11 with RISP, Memphis is hitting 7-for-31 (.226) on the young season. Looking closer, the Tigers hit 3-for-16 (.188) with two outs and runners in scoring position. TIGERS WITH TWO OUTS AND RISP DATE

TIGERS WITH DUCKS ON THE POND Memphis hit with the bases loaded five times, but a RBI single by Derrick Thomas was the lone hit with the bases full. TIGERS WITH BASES LOADED DATE

With Schoenrock at the helm of the Memphis program, the Tigers were able to end the 13-year postseason hiatus and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. The 2007 team went 36-27, marking the most wins since 1994 and, combined with the 2006 campaign, represented the first back-toback winning seasons since 1994 and 1995. Since coming to Memphis, Schoenrock has brought in three nationally-ranked recruiting classes, while 11 Tigers have been drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Twelve players have gone on to play professional baseball either through the draft or free agency.
