On Deck The Tigers close a 10-game homestand when Arkansas State visits FedExPark on Tuesday and then embark on the only road trip of the month as they travel to Arkansas State before taking to the road for a three-game set at UAB. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. on Friday in Birmingham. The Series With Arkansas State Memphis leads the all-time series with Arkansas State 110-55-2 and the two squads have played a home-and-home series the past seven seasons. Overall, the Memphis-Arkansas State series has been a home-and-home series 24 of the past 25 seasons with the lone exception being the 2004 season. The home team in the series has won the game the past two seasons and the Tigers have claimed four of the last five in the Bluff City.

Zurcher Leads Nation In Hitting With his .519 batting average, shortstop Chad Zurcher leads the nation. When the NCAA released the updated stats on March 29, Zurcher was hitting .480 on the season. With the pressure of being the nation’s leading hitter, Zurcher is 18-for-29 (.621) with two doubles, seven RBI and 15 runs scored. Zurcher has been walked eight times and hit by a pitch six times in that same span. Zurcher had a 15-game hit streak ended on April 2, but Zurcher reached base three times in that game and scored all three times. Zurcher has two or more hits in 20 of the 30 games he has played in and has posted three or more hits in a game five times this season. Of his 54 hits, 12 are extra-base hits (10 2B, 2 3B). As a freshman, Zurcher hit .267 and had 51 hits in 53 games played. Last season, Zurcher hit .400 and collected 93 hits. On-Base Machine As the nation’s leading hitter with a .519 batting average, you would expect that Chad Zurcher would be on base a lot. With 22 walks, Zurcher not only hits to find his way on base, but he also leads the nation in on-base percentage at .631. Zurcher sports a .624 on-base percentage. When the NCAA released the national leaders on March 29, Zurcher had a .588 on-base percentage. Zurcher has reached base two or more times in 27 of the 30 games he has played in. Zurcher has been hit by a pitch 13 times this season. If Zurcher doesn’t get on base, he will put the ball in play as he sports a .654 slugging percentage, third in C-USA. Zurcher has struck out just four times this season, the sixth-toughest batter to strike out in the nation. Please note that FedExPark is to be written as one word. FedExPark is not FedEx Park, Fed Ex Park, Fedexpark, Fed ex park or any other combination

A Closer Look At Arkansas State The Red Wolves earned their first conference series victory of the season on Sunday with a 13-3 win at UL-Monroe. With the series win, the Red Wolves ended a seven-game skid and picked up their first win since March 27. Arkansas State pounded out a season-high 18 hits on Sunday and finished the series at ULM having outscored the host 33-13. Todd Baumgartner leads the club with a .364 batting average and four home runs. Ryan Emery is hitting .348 and leads the squad with 28 RBI. The Red Wolves have just two batters hitting above .300 and the team carries a .269 clip into the midweek series. On the mound, Arkansas State sports a 4.01 earned run average. A dual player, Baumgartner leads ASU on the mound among the nonstarters with a 2.35 ERA in 7 2/3 innings pitched. ASU has had 14 different pitchers make over three appearances. The Red Wolves have committed 55 errors this season for a .958 fielding percentage. The 55 errors have accounted for 34 unearned runs. Sibling Rivalry The midweek series with Memphis and Arkansas State represents a different kind of rivalry in each dugout. Senior outfielder Daniel Milhouse has a brother that pitches and plays in the infield for Arkansas State. Another brotherly rivalry is represented by the Farley family. Memphis pitcher Tyler Farley and his brother, Brandon Farley, will meet one another on the diamond this week. On The Clock With the new bats this year in college baseball, one trend to follow this season is length of game. Memphis averages a game duration of 2:33 this season. Game times averaged 2:56 at this point last season. Memphis has played five games lasting over three hours and the shortest nine-inning game has been played in 2:06 at East Carolina on March 25. The longest game was played on March 23 against Arkansas in 3:25. Nine of the Tigers last 13 games have been played in 2:30 or less. Timely Hitting When looking closer at the time of games, Memphis has needed some timely hitting. The Tigers have come through this season with two outs as the offense has produced 93, two-out RBI this season. The U of M had 83, two-out RBI at this point last season and was batting .288 (103-358) with two outs. The Tigers have a .323 (112-347) average with two outs this year. After a 10 game stretch saw the Tigers hit just .250 with 18, two-out RBI, Memphis has gotten back on track hitting .356 (36-101) with two outs and 37 two-out RBI in the 10-game homestand that ends Tuesday. Memphis has 21 home runs this season and 12 have come with two outs in an inning. T.J. Rich leads the U of M with 17, twoout RBI and three other Tigers have 10 or more two-out RBI.

2011 BASEBALL GAME NOTES

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL

Arkansas State 003 101 000 - 5 10 3 Memphis 032 640 00x - 15 17 1 Freshman catcher J.D. Wallace made his first collegiate start a memorable one, going 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead Memphis to a 15-5 beating of Arkansas State at FedExPark on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Tigers earn a split of the season series with A-State to improve to 17-20 on the year. Arkansas State falls to 22-15. The rookie catcher produced a two-run single in the third that put Memphis on top for good and then came up with RBIsingles in the fourth and fifth innings. Memphis, who won its second consecutive midweek game, sent eight pitchers to the mound, with Jonathan Jones working the final two-thirds of the second inning to pick up his first win of the season. Senior Marc Ashley drew his first start of the season and his first start since May 16, 2009. He gave up one hit in two scoreless innings. Marcus Barnes struggled in the second and was touched up for three runs on one hit. The southpaw walked three, before handing the ball to Jones. Chase Joiner held A-State scoreless in 1.1 innings. Ben Paullus worked a scoreless seventh and Dan Langfield fanned four in the final two innings. The Tigers’ offense scored all 15 runs in the second thru fourth innings, including striking for six scores in the fourth stanza. Drew Martinez continued his torrid pace, with four hits and four RBI. Trey Wiedman drove in a pair in a two-hit night. Rick Russell, Adam McClain and Derrick Thomas all scored three runs for the Tigers, who out-hit the Red Wolves 17-10.

Off To A Good Start Memphis scored six runs in the second inning against Ole Miss on Tuesday and ended up with a 9-2 victory over the regional rival. Memphis again scored early on April 8 against Southern Miss and the three-run first helped the Tigers earn a 6-5 victory over the 14th-ranked Golden Eagles. Just in the last nine games, the Tigers have pounced on opponents early, producing 40 runs in the first three innings. The lone game in the last six that Memphis didn’t score in the first three innings was the 3-2 seven-inning loss to Mississippi Valley State. On the season, Memphis has scored 99 runs in the first three innings and when the Tigers score first, the U of M is 13-5. On the mound, Memphis has limited its opponents to just 31 runs in the first three innings. New Bats Catching Up To Tigers?? Although college baseball switched to the new BBCOR bats, the Memphis offense got off to a hot start at the plate, but the Tiger offense has sense been held in check when compared to last season’s numbers. After averaging more than five hits per game higher, Memphis has 22 (297) fewer hits than it did at this point last season (319). The Tigers are minus five with 17 home runs compared the 2010 squad that had 22 at this point last season. The Tigers have scored double-digit runs in 10 games and pounded out double-digit hits in 16 games. The Tigers have cut down on the strikeouts with 54 fewer strikeouts than a season ago and the U of M has walked 27 more times than the 2010 club after 27 games. Top-10 Chase Chad Zurcher continues to climb the charts for hits in a career as he moved to sixth with 216 career hits. Zurcher has some work to do to climb to the top five, needing 14 hits to tie for fifth. Drew Martinez is right on Zurcher heels as he has climbed to eighth all-time with 201 career hits. The dynamic duo has ascended in the record book for runs scored as well with Martinez at ninth with 132 runs scored and Zurcher tied for 10th with 131. Zurcher (46) and Martinez (43) are already in the top 10 for steals with Zurcher in ninth and Martinez in 10th. Tigers Capture Program Victory No. 1600 With the recent research gathered by Memphis stat historian John Guniozzo, the Tiger baseball program claimed win No. 1600 all-time on March 12 in game two of the doubleheader against Saint Peter’s. After fielding a team for the first time in 1913, Memphis has a record of 16111211-16 all-time.

2011 BASEBALL GAME NOTES

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL BY THE NUMBERS In the third inning, opponents have scored just three runs against Memphis, the least in any inning.

3 5 12 15 54 81 93

Memphis has homered two or more times in five games. Quality starts by the Tiger pitching staff this season. The Tigers have picked off 15 runners this season, first among C-USA clubs. Memphis has scored 54 runs in the last four games Don’t be fooled, but Memphis has scored 81 runs since April 1. (Last 7 games) The Tigers have 82 two-out RBI this season.

Chad Zurcher leads the nation with a batting average of .519.

.519 1,611 1,755

Memphis Baseball has claimed 1,611 wins all-time. Tiger Baseball raised $1,755 during “Mustache March” All donations were given to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis.

2,837

Since 1913, Memphis has played 2,837 games.

Caught Napping Senior southpaw Ryan Holland leads Conference USA with eight pick-offs this season. Holland has picked off two base runners in two of his outings (Kennesaw State and Saint Peter’s) and added another against Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois, Alcorn State and Southern Miss. As a pitching staff, Memphis leads C-USA with 15 pick offs. Home Cookin’ The Tigers close a 10-game homestand Tuesday and the friendly confines of FedExPark have been generous to the Tigers. Memphis has played very well at home this season, sporting a 15-5 record. The U of M is 32-15 at FedExPark and has won 21 of the last 23 games at the renovated ballpark. In head coach Daron Schoenrocks’ tenure, the Tigers are 78-76 at home. In Like A Lamb, Out Like A Lion As the saying normally states, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, but for Tiger Baseball it has had the opposite effect. After a 5-2 record in February, the U of M was 8-9 in March. April should be good for the Tigers as they will play 15 of the scheduled 20 games on the monthly calendar in the Bluff City. The Tiger bats were warm in February as the Tigers hit .354 on the month, but the bats cooled off in March with the Tigers carrying a .280 average. So far in April, the Tigers are hitting .379 as a club. Memphis had just three errors in February, but March saw the Tigers defense collect 17 errors. Under head coach Daron Schoenrock, the U of M is 53-64 in the month of April with the best record coming in the 2007 season at 12-5. Fantastic Four The U of M pitching staff sports a 4.01 ERA this season and when the Tigers score four or more runs, Memphis is 18-1 and when scoring less than four Memphis is 1-11. Just over 60 percent of the Tigers 224 runs (135 of 224) have come in the first four innings.

Get The Lead-Off Man On Base Numbers support the notion that getting a leadoff batter on base increases the likelihood of scoring runs in an inning. That has certainly been the case for the Tigers in 2011. Memphis has put its leadoff batter on base 45 percent (118-262) of the time and when the leadoff man reaches base, Memphis has scored 56 runs. In the three game set with Alcorn State, the leadoff man reached 13 times and scored 11 times. Tiger leadoff man Drew Martinez has reached base in 24 of his 49 (.490) plate appearances as a leadoff hitter. Chad Zurcher sports a 18-for-26 (.692) mark as a lead-off man. “Let’s Get Some Runs” As the former Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Caray would say during the seventh inning stretch at Wrigley Field, the Tigers are in need of some runs following the seventh inning stretch. Of the 224 runs scored this season, the U of M has scored 27 after the seventh inning. When leading after seven innings, Memphis is 19-1 and when the game is tied or the Tigers trail, Memphis is 1-9 this season. The U of M earned their first come-from-behind victory, 6-5, on April 8 against 14th-ranked Southern Miss. Getting Off The Schneid After going 5-for-24 (.208) with runners in scoring position, the Tigers have gotten off the schneid. Memphis is hitting .406 (41-101) since that series and the Tigers have produced 81 runs since April 1. On the season, the U of M is hitting .331 (126-381). After earning a series victory over No. 14 Southern Miss, the Tigers are hitting .277 (18-65) in league play. Chad Zurcher leads Memphis with a .579 average with runners in scoring position. T.J. Rich is second on the club with a .489 average.

2011 BASEBALL GAME NOTES

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL daron schoenrock Head Coach  7th Year 166-209, 191-261

The 16th baseball coach in school history, Daron Schoenrock enters his seventh season at the controls of the Memphis baseball program armed with his most experienced Tiger club yet. One of the top head coaches in the business, Schoenrock led his 2010 team to the program’s best-ever finish in Conference USA history and is poised to make a run at a second NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011. Evident in his “Total Person” approach to coaching, Schoenrock’s Tigers placed four Tigers on C-USA’s All-Conference squad and a league-best four players on the league’s All-Academic Team. With Schoenrock at the helm of the Memphis program the Tigers were able to end the 13-year postseason hiatus and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. The 2007 squad went 36-27, marking the most wins since 1994. Since coming to Memphis, Schoenrock has brought in three nationally-ranked recruiting classes, while seven Tigers have been drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Eight players have gone on to play professional baseball either through the draft or free agency.

Milestone Victory Now in his seventh year at the helm of the Memphis baseball program, head coach Daron Schoenrock claimed his milestone 150th win as the Tigers’ skipper on Feb. 20th against Evansville. Schoenrock passed the late Al Brown at No. 3 on Memphis’s all-time coaching wins ledger with his 157th career victory on March 15 against UT Martin. Schoenrock needs only nine more wins to reach a 200th career victory. Walking In Memphis Memphis has taken 139 walks this season and took the free base 33 times in the first six games. Jacob Wilson and Chad Zurcher have each tied a single-game record with four walks in a game this season. Zurcher leads the team with 22 walks on the year while T.J. Rich has 20 walks. Seven of the nine regulars in the Tiger lineup have walked 10 or more times this season. Rung Up Tiger hurler Dan Langfield struck out 16 batters at Kennesaw State on Feb. 25. His 16 strikeouts were the second-most in school history and CUSA single-game history. On the season, Langfield leads the Tiger pitching staff with 44 strikeouts which ranks third among C-USA pitchers. Moll-ing Them Down Freshman southpaw Sam Moll has been mowing down opposing hitters in his first season in the Blue and Gray. After four appearances in the bullpen, Moll has made three-straight starts in midweek games for the Tigers. In those starts, Moll has 25 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched. Moll posted seven scoreless innings and earned his second victory on the mound in the 9-2 victory over Ole Miss on April 5. On the season, Moll has fanned 34 batters and he sports a 2.25 ERA.

Double Your Pleasure Phillip Chapman leads the club with 14 doubles this season. As a team, Memphis has 69 doubles this season. Chad Zurcher and Drew Martinez are second on the team with 10 doubles each. Chapman ranks tied for second in C-USA with his 14 doubles. Chap Is Back Senior catcher Phillip Chapman showed no illeffects of the season-ending forearm injury he suffered in the final series of the 2010 regular season. In his first action since the injury, the Clinton, Miss., native led Memphis with three hits and four RBI against Evansville on Feb. 19 and came back for three more hits in game two of the series. Chapman is batting .360 this season to go with 67 total bases. He has 40 hits and 24 RBI. 1-2 Punch The Tiger duo of Drew Martinez and Chad Zurcher are back in form after leading the Tigers to its first Conference USA Tournament appearance since 2007. Both players were honored as 2011 Preseason All-C-USA performers. The Tigers All-C-USA tandem, which combined for 190 hits, 113 runs, 39 stolen bases and a .388 batting average in 2010, picked up where they left off, batting .420, with 97 hits and 66 runs scored this year. The duo has claimed 24 steals on the base paths and has 22 extra-base hits.

What A Difference A Year Makes Comparing stats from this season to last shows some improvement in some key areas for the Tigers this season. Most notably, the Tigers have a .978 fielding percentage this season compared to .952 this time a year ago. With 26 errors this season, Memphis has improved its error total from 58 a season ago and allowed just 15 unearned runs compared to 52 this time a year ago. On the mound, the U of M has shaved off over two runs per game off its ERA with a 4.01 team ERA compared to 6.09 this time last season. The Tigers have nearly identical numbers as last season with a .321 batting average. The largest statistical difference with the 2011 club compared to the 2010 squad is the run differential. The 2010 squad was minus 17 runs at this point last season, but this year, Memphis has a plus 88 runs. The Tigers have shown improvement at the plate, cutting strikeouts down by 26 and taking three more walks compared to last year’s club.

Where Is The Production Coming From? When looking closely at game-by-game box scores, Memphis has gotten most of its offensive firepower from the first four batters in the lineup. This season, the first four hitters are batting .348. The first four batters have provided 48 percent (100-206) of the clubs RBI this season and 55 percent (122-224) of the runs scored. When the first four batters in the lineup collect four or more hits, the Tigers are 18-6 this season. Four is the magic number in runs scored as the Tigers are 16-0 when the first four batters account for four or more runs. The Tigers first four batters have hit .250 or better in 24 of the 31 games this season and Memphis is 18-6 in those games. What About The Bottom Of The Order? With the top of the order producing just over half of the runs this season, what is the bottom of the order doing you may ask. The 7-8-9 hitters are batting .287 on the season and 54 RBI. The 7-8-9 hitters have scored 52 runs for the Tiger offense and when those hitters score three or more times, Memphis is 10-0. When the last three batters in the order hit at a .250 clip or higher, Memphis is 18-1 on the season. All In The Family This year’s edition of Tiger baseball showcases a unique twist for head coach Daron Schoenrock. This roster features a second Schoenrock, as Daron’s son Erik is a freshman left-handed pitcher on the 2011 squad. Erik earned a win against Saint Peter’s on March 13 to give his father his 156th win at the U of M. With that win, Daron tied the late Al Brown for third all-time on Memphis’ coaching wins ledger.

“Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” As the B.J. Thomas lyric goes, rain drops keep falling on Tiger Baseball. Memphis has already had two rain outs this season. The rain out with Oral Roberts on March 4 will be made up as Arkansas-Pine Bluff will visit FedExPark for a 6:30 p.m. game on May 10. The rained out game with Auburn on March 9 will not be made up, but head coach Daron Schoenrock added a game with Mississippi Valley State on March 30 to make up the rain out. Memphis will now play a doubleheader with MVSU. The Tigers schedule was changed once again with anticipated rainfall in the Greenville, N.C. area as the Tigers played a doubleheader against East Carolina on March 26.
