2010

Predictions Yes. You love them, partly because they are always right on the money, but mostly because you can make cash off of these. Bet with your friends or better yet, hop a plane to Vegas and place a few bets there. The keen insight below is guarenteed to make you millions.* So anyway, here they are, my 2010 predictions. Read ‘em and weep. • Sports fans in Memphis will continue to beg for an on campus stadium. The University of Memphis will finally start to listen.

• Jeff Fisher will flirt with leaving the Titans but will ultimately decide to stay. • Vince Young will lose his starting job again. • Mike Conley will be traded. • Leigh Ann Tuohy will take in eight kids as Sandra Bullock begins work on a remake of Eight is Enough. • The Redbirds and Riverkings will field teams for another season even though ticket sales decline.

• They will begin construction on a 12,000 seat stadium. It will come close to selling out the first season.

• My favorite annual Grizlies party, the Draft Lottery Party, will go on as scheduled.

• Fred Smith will bail out the St. Jude Golf Classic by finding a sponsor for the tournament.

• You will be able to see the Tigers, Grizzlies, Redbirds and Riverkings in 3-D. In fact, you can do that right now–buy a ticket and go to the game. It’s always in 3-D if you see it live!

• Tiger Woods will not attend. • Peyton Manning will not win the Super Bowl. ill • He will cry on national TV and I will think that is funny. • Memphis football will finish in the bottom half of Conference USA.

Mike Bullard, publisher

• Most people will say that is a er successful first season for Coach Porter. • The Gary Parrish Show will cease operations only to land on another station, bringing back Geoff Calkins full time along with the title, The Geoff and Gary Show. • Josh Pastner will finish the season second in Conference USA and still get a bid for the NCAA tournament.

FIVE fun facts about the last time the Grizzlies were .500 after January 1st

5 QUESTIONS WITH

TEFLON DON An Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, Teflon Don is an emerging hip-hop star who recently released a single called “M.E.M.P.H.I.S. Grizzlies.” To find out more about Teflon Don visit www.teflondonggg.com.

1. Rodney Carney was a Memphis Tiger. 2. Tara Pachmayer was reporting sports for WREG. 3. Shane Battier, Lorenzen Wright and Jake Tsakalidis were all on the roster. 4. Tim Donaghy was officiating and betting on NBA games. 5. Fans could celebrate wins at Pat O’Brien’s on Beale.

1. Why did you release a rap song about the Memphis Grizzlies? I’m trying to uplift my city and get my city to shine. People don’t represent and support the Grizz like they should. 2. Who did you follow in the NBA before the Grizzlies moved to Memphis? You know I gotta take you back for this one. I’m an MJ fan–diehard. After Jordan, I like Derrick Rose and D. Wade.

FIVE things to put Chris Johnson’s 2006 rushing yards and 503 receiving yards into perspective

3. Are you more proud of your tour of duty in Iraq or your rap career? I’m more proud of my current career because I think it’s a calling where I can talk to the youth. In the military, no one really knew me. They knew me as a soldier, not as a person. Kids look up to entertainers, and I can tell them about the military through my career. 4. What is the story behind the title of your current album God, The Government, The Game? You can’t get around those three words. It’s how I live. I believe in God, was in the military, which is the government, and music is my game. It’s what I’m good at. And my military certificate is what I fall back on. I want to teach kids that they can achieve something but they have to work hard for it and have a plan. 5. What sticks to you? What sticks to me is my image. When people see me they know it’s me because I got that white coat and a jazzy hat. I’m representing. Everything I stand for, my sound goes with my name, my voice that puts out with DMX. I can be crunk or calm. When I’m crunk, you know it’s Teflon Don.

What I’m Angry About This Week

– From “I’m Angry About The Heisman” by Mike Bullard: Here’s an idea - let’s give an award for something before its finished. Maybe we should try this with some of the other awards. Let’s try the Oscars. Let’s take all the movies nominated and not allow the voters to see the last 10 minutes of any movie. How do think that would turn out?

The Poems of Jack Eaton – From “Ode to UT Basketball” by Jack Eaton:

How many words are there that rhyme with Thug? I can think of bug, jug, chug and even plug. Now, there is a two word phrase that says it all. Are you ready? Yeah, it’s Tennessee basketball. Of course all UT players aren’t thugs but I will say, It sure as the devil seems that way. Four were arrested, they were smokin’ dope and had a gun. Were these just high spirited kids havin’ fun? No, I almost hate to say it, but what the heck I will. It was just another day up there on the Hill. Now if Calipari coached at UT, he’d avoid all the flap By having a three hour course in beating the rap. So Tennessee will be ready as the conference schedule nears But they’ll probably be called the Thugs not the Volunteers. From Preston Laird’s iPod photo JOE MURPHY NBAE/GETTY IMAGES

Cloaked in darkess, we crept into the dorm room of Memphis baller, Preston Laird, and swiped his iPod. Then we checked out which songs were his top ten. This list is presented below. (Note: This is not true. He just told us his top ten songs.) The opinions offered below are for your benefit and hopefully will help you to choose better music in the future.

1 Survivor

[Eye of the Tiger] Cheesy? Yes. Theme from a Sly Stallone movie? Check. Totally awesome pop perfection? You bet. Plus, Jimi Jamison is a proud Memphian AND singer of the Bud Light commercials. Plus this will forever be the kick-butt theme song for our beloved Tigers. Also, this was the first 45 I ever bought. 45? Look it up kids.

2 [Happy Birthday]

Seriously? On your iPod? I hope it’s either the 50 Cent version or the Beatles version. Anyone with a recording of the actual Happy Birthday song on their iPod–that’s just plain weird. And, oh... it gets weirder.

3 Michael Buble [Lost]

For the ladies? Maybe. Personally, I don’t see why any self respecting male would even know who this guy is.

4 Drake, Kanye, Lil Wayne, Eminem [Forever] This reminds me of that track with Snoop and Tupac–sounds like a good idea–but no. Too many cooks in the kitchen boys.

5 Zac Brown [Whatever It Is]

I can’t think of a better example of over polished, modern country record production. Decent tune, decent band, sure, but where’s the heart and soul? On an Al Green record, that’s where.

6 Owl City [Fireflies]

If you’ve never heard of this group then you probably don’t own an iPod. These guys are an iTunes phenomenon. Unfortunately, they sound like a lame version of American Idol rejects. If you haven’t heard of them by now, you probably never will.

7

Whitney Houston [I Will Always Love You] [NOTE: These comments were deleted by the editor due to extreme criticism, foul language, and generally making fun of the dude because this song was on his top ten list.]

8 Miley Cyrus [Party in the U.S.A.]

On this one, I’m gonna give a thumbs up. Whoever wrote and produced this tune is a pretty darn good at what they do. Somehow, I doubt it was Miley. Maybe her dad? But probably not. He does have a cool haircut though.

9 Young Jeezy [Welcome Back]

You know what would have really made this tune happen? A sample from the Welcome Back Kotter theme song. Seriously. Think about it.

10 Three 6 Mafia [Late Nite Tip]

Now we are back on track. This is a song that should be on your iPod. Something tells me someone else on the team made this suggestion. Hey Computer–hit me up–I got some beats for you. For questions, comments, suggestions, or hate mail, fish@memphissport.net.

BRING IT ON

A simple formula - one cheerleader, questions and answers.

Ashley GRIZZLIES CO-EMCEE

What is your favorite MC Hammer song? I don’t have one. But, I do have something in common with Vanilla Ice. We both owned a kangaroo. He might still have his…

What was your kangaroo’s name? Buddy. Do you have a dream job? Being the host of my own show on a major network.

Who is your favorite TV host? Brooke Burke. Favorite TV channel? CMT. I was born and raised in the country. I will always be a southern girl at heart.

Do you have any tattoos? No. If you got a tattoo, what would it be? My cattle ranch brand, which is my initials with a horseshoe.

Why don’t you already have this tattoo? I don’t know. I think because of the industry I’m in, it is not worth getting a tattoo.

by KEVIN CERRITO photo by CHASE GUSTAFSON

Do you have a boyfriend? No, and I don’t want one. I have too much fun being single.

What is your idea of a perfect date? Having all day to cook an amazing meal. Then, my boy would come over to eat dinner. There would be candles all over, fresh flowers, music, a fire lit, and wine. I love chill nights like that.

Do you have a pregame routine? Yes. I get there at 4:30. Before our meeting, I put my hair in rollers and I rock the rollers for the meeting. I look like an idiot, but I don’t care.

If you had to give Z-Bo a new nickname, what would it be? “Maestro,” after his rendition of “Super Freak” during Grizzlies Karaoke. M For more with Ashley, check out memphissport.net to listen to her in-studio appearance on Memphis Sport Live.

Live Debate Kevin and Jan Michael go head-to-head.

KEVIN: Memphis is not taking advantage of the national exposure it gets every year during bowl season. The time has come for the Liberty Bowl to change its name.

JM: I don’t understand why the time has come. Unless it’s a BCS bowl, I think the name can only get worse–like the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.

KEVIN: Why does Memphis’ bowl still have to promote the city of Philadelphia? Libertyland has been closed for years and there are over 30 bowls now. I don’t think the Liberty Bowl should keep its name just because “that’s what it has always been called.” JM: How much of a difference would a name change really make? At this point, the AutoZone Liberty Bowl at least has history, which is something very few bowls can still boast. Bear

10 | Memphis Sport

Bryant coached his last game at the Liberty Bowl in 1982. Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, John Vaught and Joe Paterno have also coached here. And there have also been four Heisman Trophy winners to play at the bowl– Terry Baker, Ernie Davis, Doug Flutie and Bo Jackson. In it’s 50 years, the Liberty Bowl has developed a pretty impressive history to go with its more than solid attendance and TV ratings.

KEVIN: Name changes don’t erase history. Look at the Titans and all the other professional sports teams that have moved cities, changed names and kept their history. As far as I’m concerned, the Liberty Bowl is the Utah Jazz of the college football bowl games. JM: What? I don’t think that analogy fits at all. Bowl games can be successful as long as people show up and viewers tune in.

KEVIN: Nashville has the Music City Bowl. Detroit has the Motor City Bowl. Why not call Memphis’ bowl something like the AutoZone

Bluff City Bowl or the AutoZone Hustle and Flow Bowl? How about the AutoZone Rock ‘n’ Roll Bowl?

JM: I don’t like how Rock n’ Roll Bowl rhymes… Obviously, there are names that would sound more Memphis, but what is that really going to do for the city? KEVIN: The Liberty Bowl name does nothing for the city right now. Changing the name would help promote Memphis with the bowl. Do a nationwide survey of sports fans and see how many can tell you where the Liberty Bowl is played. I bet the majority of the votes will be for Philadelphia. It’s not always sunny in Memphis. JM: That doesn’t matter. What matters is the over 50,000 fans in attendance for 12 straight years and the 4.2 TV rating – the same rating as the Chickfil-A Bowl and not far behind the Cotton Bowl. Until they start playing the game in a new stadium, there is no point to change the name. It is doing better than fine right now.

With fee assistance and no joining fee January 2–18, we’re making it easier than ever to get started. Come on in and find out why we’re more than a gym. We’re the Y.

KEVIN: But the bowl could be even more successful with a new name. One of the things the Memphis Motorsports Park did right was the Elvis trophy that they presented every year to the winner of the Memphis 250. Every year, Memphis’ bowl game presents its winner with a trophy that is a replica of a monument in Philadelphia, PA.

We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities.

JM: Yep, Memphis Motorsports Park got the trophy right. How’s that working out for them? Oh yeah, it’s closed. Bowl games are about money. Any college football fan should know that by now. I’m always for promoting Memphis. I just don’t see the point of a name change right now. KEVIN: If the Motor City Bowl moves to Little Rock, do you think they should change the name of that bowl? JM: Obviously. The Motor City is Detroit. But it’s not called the AutoZone Liberty Bell Bowl. I’m pretty sure liberty is nationwide. Though this All-Star doesn’t revolve around one player, the ST. BENEDICT LADY EAGLES VOLLEYBALL TEAM may just be full of all-stars as it won its first ever Division II-AA State Volleyball Championship after a five-set victory over Baylor. SBA senior setter Megan Pulido, tournament MVP, and head coach Angie Buchanan, Coach’s award winner, helped the Lady Eagles sweep through the tournament and finish with a record of 37-11. SBA then cheered on as fellow Cordova team, the ECS Lady Eagles, notched a State Championship of its own after defeating Webb school in the finals. MUS head coach Johnny Beard says Myers has all the tools–“blazing speed, an A+ arm and true potential to hit for power”–to make him a successful college player. After beginning his baseball career at age five, Myers has turned into a formidable player for the Owls, earning a 2009 All-Region selection. 6. Don’t Graze the Buffet 1. Drink, Drink, Drink A sports nutrition diet doesn’t stop at the gym. For proper sports nutrition, you have to stay hydrated all the time, not just when you’re working out. Put a water bottle on your desk and sip it all day long. – Adam Crites, Cordova Athletic Club

2. Sleep, Sleep, Sleep Make sure you are getting adequate sleep at night. For most people this means between 7 and 8 hours. While you sleep your body releases good hormones such as testosterone and growth hormone which help to build muscle and burn fat. – David Allen, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

3. Don’t Run to Train. Train to Run. Running is not highly effective for most people’s fitness goals, unless of course your goal is to be good at running. If you’re overweight running is more likely to injure you than get you in great shape. Try circuit training instead. – Doug Larson, MS, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, CrossFit Memphis

4. Take the Best Diet Pill on the Market The best diet pill on the market is...GET YOUR BUNS TO THE GYM AND STOP LOOKING FOR SHORT CUTS! – AD Davis, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

5. Make Tupperware your Best Friend Plan your meals ahead of time and cook in bulk. If you always have quality food available that you can heat up at a moment’s notice then you won’t be so temped to order out. – Doug Larson, MS, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, CrossFit Memphis

14 | Memphis Sport

Get a small plate and choose one or two of your favorite items then back away from the table. Stay away from the nuts–while an excellent source of protein they are still very high in calories and you can’t eat just one! – Susan Nicholas, Consultant, Lifestyle Weight Loss

7. Skip the Sugary Cereals A lot of cereals have high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup solids, or just plain sugar. Ingredients are listed on the label in the order of the largest amounts in the food. Try to reduce or eliminate refined sugar. If you have a sugar habit try to eat more fruit to curb it and finally kick those sugar binges. – Tonya Tittle, MS, ACSM, Energy Fitness

8. Light a Fire Think of your body’s fat burning capabilities as a fire. In order to burn more you have to either make the fire bigger (build more muscle) or make the fire hotter (increase your metabolism). – David Allen, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

9. Hire a Trainer on the Cheap If you can’t consistently afford a personal trainer, hire one to write you a program and have them show you how to do it. It’s much cheaper and you don’t have those awkward moments staring at each other between sets. – Mike Bledsoe, BS, NSCA-CPT, CrossFit Memphis

10. Find a Fun and Challenging Activity You must find a fun, challenging activity that has a coach/ drill sergeant/instructor constantly challenging you, motivating you, teaching you and pushing you. Feeding

Fitness Tips From Memphis’ best fitness pros

off others energy and motivation by working in a class or group setting is also a great way to help you get through a tough session and ultimately make you a better you. – David Ferguson, Owner/Instructor, Memphis Judo & Jiu-Jitsu

11. Change up Your Bench Press Want to change things up and get a stronger bench press? Try this; Grab dumbbells and lie back on a bench. Squeeze your shoulder blades down and together. Position the weights at the sides of your chest with palms facing each other. Press the weights straight overhead, keeping your wrists in the same position. This takes excess pressure off your shoulder joints and increases your mechanical advantage, allowing you to lift significantly more weight. – Corey Klein, AFAA Personal Trainer, Klein Fitness

12. Work Your Way Up Women typically have weaker upper bodies. Modified pushups (knees on the ground) are a great way to increase upper body and core strength. As your strength improves, go from a modified to a basic pushup (knees off the ground). – AD Davis, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

13. Always Stretch Helping reduce non contact injuries is a concern of all weekend warriors and trained athletes. This dynamic warm-up can also include cardiovascular exercise continuous for 20 minutes at 65% maximum heart rate. So always stretch, but make it active/dynamic and not just bending over and touching your toes. – David Grigsby MPT, Cert MDT, MidSouth Orthopaedic

15. Learn to Train Properly The only thing worse than doing the wrong exercise is doing the right exercise the wrong way. This is especially important in golf fitness. Just going to the gym and training with someone who does not understand golf fitness can do more harm than good for your golf game. – Larry T. Davis, Chiropractor, Germantown Golf Fitness

16. Pump Up the Jams Listen to the music! An upbeat tempo or your favorite song will make workout time fly by. – AD Davis, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

17. Eliminate Alcohol if You Can It is metabolized as sugar. A four oz. glass of wine is 100 calories. You are basically eating a small bowl of ice cream by drinking your calories. – Tonya Tittle, MS, ACSM, Energy Fitness

18. Manage Your Water Intake Manage your water intake. I don’t suggest eight bottles of water I suggest six because it’s more realistic and you can poison yourself on too much water. Too much of anything will kill you. – Kelvin “New York” Brown, PowerLife Fitness

19. Train Your Core To insure that you are training your core, make sure that for every abdominal exercise that you do there is an opposing lower back and posterior chain support exercise to go along with it. You are only as strong as your weakest link. – Rob Weatherly, SPARQ, Velocity Sports Performance

14. Eat Five a Day, the Color Way Eat five different colors of fruits and/or vegetables every single day. This will help you get all the necessary vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber your body needs to be healthy. – Mike Bledsoe, BS, NSCA-CPT, USAW, CrossFit Memphis

20. Add Variety to Your Workout Use different equipment, vary your weight, or try a new class. Try circuit training, a combination of strength, core and cardio intervals. This will get you heart rate up

www.memphissport.net | 15

and build muscle at the same time. You’ll save time and work at a higher intensity. Variety is the spice of life! – Wendy Mills, AFAA-CPT, Bartlett Recreation Center

21. Plan Cheat Meals If you’re going to do it then do it right and eat something you actually want! As long as you get back on track after the meal is over you’ll be just fine and won’t get so burnt out on “healthy eating”. If you have a small meal every three hours or so then you’ll be eating about 40 times a week so make four (10%) of them cheat meals. – Doug Larson, MS, CSCS, NSCA-CPT, CrossFit Memphis

22. Don’t Eat Fast Food It’s not just “free” calories. Eating fast food in particular is an easy way to lose control of that belly fat. Keep snacks in the car, at work, in your purse or briefcase. Be prepared. – Tonya Tittle, MS, ACSM, Energy Fitness

23. Rest Longer as you Age As we reach middle age, it takes longer to recover from injuries and hard workouts. You may want to run every other day, instead of every day, or take two days between workouts instead of one. Be realistic about your exercise. You can keep the quality of your workouts high–just cut the quantity or frequency. – Adam Crites, Cordova Athletic Club

24. Blow out the Sugar with Sprints Sprint training “blows out the sugar” and makes your body become a fat burning machine. Sprint training doesn’t have to only mean running, it can apply to any quick burst of activity with all out effort followed by active or passive rest. Remember, to get maximum benefits from sprint training try to complete four sessions per week. – Tonya Tittle, MS, ACSM, Energy Fitness

27. Snack with Calories in Mind Remember to eat every three hours to keep your metabolism revved all day. Keep in mind what your daily caloric intake should be. You should eat three small meals and two snacks daily, combining protein, complex carbohydrates, and monounsaturated fats (avocado, olive oil, etc) to keep your metabolism going and energy up. – Kim Morgan, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

28. Do Squats Whether it’s toning or strengthening your lower body... squats are the go-to exercise. – AD Davis, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

29. Keep Temptations Out of Sight First do not buy something if you know it will tempt you. If you have something that you have to dig for you are working for it. If you have to work to get it, sometimes you might change your mind about it. You can even have someone else hide your vice, “Out of sight out of mind.” – Karin Johnson, NESTA-CPT, Bartlett Recreation Center

30. Don’t Be a Victim of Creep Have you ever been caught at your desk engrossed in your work and the next thing you know two hours have passed. You realize you need to make it to a meeting and hop up. However, your body does not hop with you and you are stiff in back, hips, knees or all the above. Well, you have been a victim of creep. In order to prevent this, sit tall in your chair and arch your back until strain (not pain) is felt and hold two to three seconds. Repeat 15 times and then get to your meeting. – David Grigsby MPT, Cert MDT, MidSouth Orthopaedic

31. Work Out Early 25. Nibble Before You Go To a Party Don’t try and starve yourself before a party. You will end up eating a great deal of very fattening food in a short period of time. Eat a small meal before leaving the house or have some crackers and low-fat cheese or a protein bar. Enjoy the company and not so much the food. – Susan Nicholas, Consultant, Lifestyle Weight Loss

26. Say “NO” to Fried Food I know that’s hard in Memphis but try to stick to this rule as much as you can. – Corey Klein, AFAA Personal Trainer, Klein Fitness

16 | Memphis Sport

If you are looking to lose fat quickly, perform cardio first thing in the morning before you eat anything. This forces your body to pull from your fat for energy because your muscle and liver glycogen stores are depleted. – David Allen, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

32. Drink Half Your Weight in Ounces If you are 180 lbs. then you need to consume 90 ounces of water per day plus four ounces for every 15 minutes of exercise you perform. Keep a stash of bottled water in the floorboard of your car behind your passenger seat. – Tonya Tittle, MS, ACSM, Energy Fitness

33. Believe Positive thinking is the number one predictor of success. Those that believe they can achieve their goals are more likely to stick with a routine and work through set-backs to get long-term results. – Kim Morgan, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

33. Push and Pull Balance your workouts. For every push do a pull. There are six basic compound movements: lower body push, lower body pull, upper body horizontal push, upper body horizontal pull, upper body vertical push and upper body vertical pull. Make sure you do them all in equal amounts. – David Allen, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

34. Prevent Shin Splints To prevent shin splints, strengthen the front of your lower leg by lifting the side of a weight plate with your toes (heel on the ground) or walking around on your heels, then stretch your calves. – Adam Crites, Cordova Athletic Club

37. Alternate Alcohol with Water Alcohol consumption lowers your inhibitions, so watch the amount that you consume. Have a glass of water or diet soda between the glasses of wine. Water fills you up and your tendency will be to drink less. – Susan Nicholas, Consultant, Lifestyle Weight Loss

38. Consume 20-30 Grams of Fiber Make sure you are eating at least 20 grams of fiber each day. Look at labels. Go for cereals & crackers (Kashi brand is great), and protein bars that contain at least four to seven grams per serving. – Tonya Tittle, MS, ACSM, Energy Fitness

39. Don’t Overextend When Kickboxing

Start with a measurable goal, and keep a journal so that you can see your progress. Then, use your success to fuel your next workout. Finally, reward yourself ! Give yourself a break one day a week. – Corey Klein, AFAA Personal Trainer, Klein Fitness

Cardio kickboxing is popular and fun, but there is a risk of injury. Prevent injury by avoiding overextension on kicks, not locking joints when punching or kicking, not wearing weights or holding dumbbells when you work out which can stress joints, and not pushing beyond your present ability. This can apply to karate and other martial arts classes as well. – Adam Crites, Cordova Athletic Club

36. Mix It Up

40. Try Two-A-Days

35. Get Motivated in Simple, Easy Steps

Make sure to keep switching up your routine so that your muscles don’t get bored. This is the best way to see results quickly and continue to contour your body. – Kim Morgan, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

Split your workouts up to maximize afterburn and keep metabolism elevated. For example, perform cardio in the morning and train with weights after work. – Kim Morgan, Personal Trainer, Germantown Athletic Club

‘REKE

Clearly, that was apparent after the Kings’ recent game at FedExForum when a mob of reporters gathered in front of Evans’ locker, waiting for him to finish showering so they could converse with the Sacramento star rookie guard.

HAVO

It seems that Tyreke Evans has become the most sought-after player for postgame interviews in the Sacramento Kings’ locker room these days.

Fielding each question as if he expected them, the 20-year-old Evans did not appear annoyed by the array of subjects he sensed would come up in his first appearance in the Forum since leading Memphis to its fourth consecutive Conference USA title last March.

C

Once he was done, Evans could barely get dressed before all of the cameras and recorders that were immediately pointed toward him. Suddenly, he was thrown an assortment of questions ranging from what’s it like playing on the West coast after growing up in the Philadelphia area, his relationship with Kings coach Paul Westphal, to how he is adjusting as an NBA rookie after one productive season at the University of Memphis.

“This is where it all began for me, man,” Evans said. “I had a lot of great times here while in college. It was fun coming back and playing in front of the FedExForum crowd.” Though the Kings were dealt their fourth consecutive defeat by the Grizzlies, Evans, the fourth overall pick in last June’s draft, managed to exemplify why he is among the league’s most thriving rookies.

Along with his 28-point outburst in the loss, he produced the most minutes for the injury-plagued Kings with 37. Evans, in fact, leads all NBA rookies with 36 minutes per contest, and his offensive productivity suggests he has emerged as the catalyst of the NBA’s third-youngest team. So much so that the Kings, who boasted the NBA’s worst record a year ago, are on pace to eclipse last year’s 17 wins, in large part because Evans’ scoring instincts and versatility have consistently caused matchup problems for opposing guards. He is ranked in the top 50 in the NBA in points per game, steals, and assists, numbers that helped in him being named Western Conference Rookie of the Month for both the first and second month of the season. Additionally, the 6-foot-6 Evans is the top scorer among rookies in the Western Conference. However, Milwaukee Bucks phenom Brandon Jennings is also a top candidate for NBA Rookie of the Year after winning back-to-back Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month awards. Evans, of course, insists he isn’t concerned that Jennings (whom Evans outplayed in the first regular-season meetings between the two in the Kings’ 96-95 win on Dec. 19) could possibly prevent him from being the second former Memphis player (Derrick Rose, 2009) in as many years to walk away with Rookie of the Year honors. While he believes winning the award would be an astounding achievement, Evans contends his primary focus is to help resurrect a rebuilding Sacramento squad that could challenge for a postseason berth after the All-Star break. So far, the league’s most efficient newcomer is as good as advertised. “That was my main goal, getting to the NBA and playing on

The main thing is that he is too big for basically every guard he’s faced. What caught my attention was how quick he is. He gets to the basket so easily. He’s going to cause problems for a lot of people.” Evans credits part of his early success to former Memphis All-American and NBA player Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway. A four-time NBA All-Star, Hardaway served as a mentor to Evans during his lone season at Memphis, particularly

He placed in double figures in the Kings’ first five games of the season. Then, after Martin sustained a broken wrist on his non-shooting hand a few weeks later, Evans became Sacramento’s No. 1 scoring option, tallying at least 20 points in seven consecutive games in November. More impressive is that Evans has joined James, Wade, and Atlanta’s Joe Johnson as the only players to average 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists this season. As far as Westphal is concerned, that’s pretty stupendous company for a player whom many didn’t expect to create much hype in this, his freshman year in the NBA. “We’re glad he’s on our team,” Westphal said of Evans. “We have a young team, a good future, and he certainly will be a part of it. We think he’s going to have an excellent career.” M

Hall of Legends The very best of Memphis sports.

Anfernee Hardaway:

RESPECT, TALENT, AND INJURIES by ANDRE JOHNSON photo courtesy ORLANDO MAGIC

Anfernee Hardaway sat up in his chair above the court at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse during his recent basketball event, gazed into the rafters, and flashed the same signature grin that earned him the nickname, “Penny,” by his grandmother when he was a child.

in Orlando, Hardaway felt he would have been remiss is he hadn’t discussed the scintillating and classic battles against recent Hall of Fame inductee Michael Jordan.

The former Memphis consensus All-American guard appeared blissful that his event, the Penny Hardaway Basketball Classic, had drawn large crowds during the three-day affair to help support the local Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. He was, in fact, ecstatic that his alma mater was courteous in allowing him to put on display an honorable event comprised of over 30 of the best high schools teams throughout the Mid-South.

Hardaway paused momentarily, then smiled and stared into the rafters again, as if to say he knew he was as good as advertised each time he faced whom many say is the best basketball player to set foot on the court. Suddenly, he offered a rather courageous response by which many shouldn’t find surprising, considering his skills were often likened to Jordan and Magic Johnson during his early years in the NBA.

But while the 38-year-old Hardaway expressed how much he wants his charitable event to continue “long after I’m gone,” it seemed that wasn’t the obvious reason for his constant smirk. Hardaway was brought to smiles when asked to reflect on his mostly-prosperous NBA career that included stops in Orlando, Phoenix, New York, and Miami. It was, in fact, a promising career that seemed on target to landing the native Memphian in the Hall of Fame before recurring knee injuries disrupted his effectiveness and forced him out of the league. He reminisced about his playing days in Orlando alongside Nick Anderson, Dennis Scott, and future Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, among others. He also recalled when he was in the prime of a career that was highlighted with All-Rookie First Team honors, three All-NBA selections, four All-Star appearances, and an Olympic gold medal in 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. “I look at it like this,” Hardaway said. “In six years, maybe seven, I accomplished more than what most NBA players did in their entire career. I’m All-NBA two or three times, All-Star four times. I did all of this in maybe four years. If it wasn’t for all the injuries, I’m pushing for the Hall of Fame.” Though he was among the most popular and admired players in the NBA, particularly during his six seasons

Ah…His Airness.

I fell in love with that team that went to the Final Four against Villanova and from that point on, I was already sold. “I was like, ‘I’m ready to kill him,’,” a laughing Hardaway said of Jordan. “I had that Memphis mentality. I wanted to show him I could play. “It was amazing because I knew he was going to make me play a game at a high level. He gave me a lot of credit, telling other players and his teammates that he respected my game. When he says that, that means you’re getting a blessing from the man.” That Jordan publicly commended Hardaway’s tenacity, particularly during the 1995 playoffs when he averaged 25.7 points and helped the Magic eliminate Jordan and the Bulls in Eastern Conference semifinals, only reinforced

what Memphians have known all along. That is, Hardaway was destined for greatness since his teenage days of playing pickup games on the perilous streets of Binghamton. Arguably the best player in Treadwell High history, the 6-foot-7 Hardaway was Parade Magazine’s National High School Player of the Year after a memorable senior campaign in which he was a McDonald’s All-American after averaging 36.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 3.9 steals. Even before finishing his prep career with 3,039 points, he had stacks of scholarship offers from virtually every major Division 1 school in the country. He chose Memphis over Arkansas because of the Tigers’ rise to national prominence in the 1980s. “I fell in love with that (1984-85) team that went to the Final Four against Villanova and from that point on, I was already sold,” Hardaway said. Poor grades ultimately forced Hardaway to sit out his freshman season (1990-91) at the U of M. Later that year, he was marred by more hardship when he was robbed at gunpoint and struck in the foot by a stray bullet. While such an incident essentially jeopardized his career, Hardaway quickly recouped on and off the court. He capped off his freshman year by making the Dean’s List. A year later, the two-time Great Midwest Conference Player of the Year guided the Tigers to an Elite Eight appearance, where they were trounced by Cincinnati for the fourth time that season. Hardaway played one more season at Memphis but passed up his senior campaign for early entry into the NBA Draft. Selected with the third overall pick in 1993 by the Golden State Warriors, Hardaway was traded with three future firstround draft selections to the Orlando Magic for the draft rights to No. 1 overall pick Chris Webber. Ironically, Webber topped Hardaway for Rookie of the Year honors, but that didn’t prevent his popularity from reaching its peak years later. Coming off of his second consecutive All-NBA first team selection, he was selected to the Olympic Team in 1996. Consequently, his Air Penny athletic shoe was dubbed the most popular hoops footwear on the market, prompting Nike to pay tribute to Hardaway with the “Lil Penny” commercial ad featuring a small puppet voiced by longtime comedian and actor Chris Rock. “That was fun because that was comedy,” said Hardaway, who also starred in the basketball drama film, Blue Chips, in 1994. Following the departure of O’Neal to the Los Angeles Lakers during the offseason, Hardaway was the only marquee player on the Magic’s roster heading into the 1996-97 campaign. He spent three more seasons in Orlando before being dealt

Hall of Legends to Phoenix and joining Jason Kidd to assemble what was labeled BackCourt 2000. His stint with the Suns lasted five seasons after he was shuffled in and out of the team’s starting lineup. He was eventually traded to the New York Knicks, where he appeared in 83 games in two mostly injury-ridden seasons. Traded back to Orlando in 2006, Hardaway was waived five days later, but attempted a comeback a year and a half later when the Miami Heat signed him for the veteran’s minimum. However, his tenure in South Beach lasted only four months as he was waived in favor of former NBA player Luke Jackson. While Hardaway repeatedly said he believed he could still perform at a high level, no team has shown interest in signing him in over two years. Still, his presence is seemingly being felt throughout the league today. LeBron James, Gilbert Arenas, Tracy McGrady, and Trevor Ariza, among others, have admitted that they idolized Hardaway when they were growing up. While Hardaway said he is grateful to have impacted a number of players in some aspect, he seemed more enthralled with regards to earning Jordan’s respect. “He respected my game,” a chuckling Hardaway said, once again. As if there was really any doubt. M The M Awards continue all year long with the addition of the Hall of Legends. Each year six new Legends will be inducted into the Hall, an honor given to a local sports icon whose athletic contributions and public influence have had perennial effects on Memphis and the Mid-South.

THE NEWS To say Kelvin “New York” Brown has been fit most of his 39 years would be an understatement. But it wasn’t until 2006 when the former junior college All-American basketball star decided to make fitness his career following the tragic death of mother. Both Brown’s parent’s died before the age of 50, motivating Brown to live a healthy lifestyle and eventually teach others the merits of personal fitness. As the co-owner and Director of Training Operations for Power Life Fitness, Brown is the trainer of choice to CEOs, cancer patients, athletes and the everyday Memphian. Memphis Sport: You attribute your motivation to become a certified personal trainer to the early deaths of your parents. What about that experience pushed you towards a fitness career? Brown: I always have had a fear of dying at an early age, especially after my dad died at age 36 of a diabetic stroke. My interest in fitness didn’t come until my mother died. She smoked for 28 years and tried to stop but it caused her hypertension. I had it in my mind that I didn’t want to die at an early age. You’re 6’4”, 250 pounds. It’s hard to believe you haven’t lived in the gym for years. What did you do before jumping into the fitness industry? I was 189 pounds in high school. Before this, I spent nine years in corporate America. I was an NBC Bank Manager, I worked for the Social Security Administration and St. Jude. Power Life Fitness was a big turn around for me. I met Steve Smith and Mora Smith [Power Life co-owners] and they saw something different in

28 | Memphis Sport

the way that I trained. They asked me if I would be interested in a partnership and that’s how it came about. Steve Smith attributes the idea of founding Power Life to you and your training methods. What makes you so special compared to other personal trainers? I’ve developed my own moves that focus on primary and secondary movements of muscles and the transferring of energy. I also get into the fitness part of nutrition. You can work out all day, but you can not neglect your nutrition. I think that’s why I have so many success stories because I focus on nutrition so much. So you got your own moves, huh? Can you give us five fitness tips to help us get in shape? 1. Manage your water intake. I don’t suggest eight bottles of water I suggest six because it’s more realistic and you can poison yourself on too much water. Too much of anything will kill you. 2. Eat six small meals a day. Three main meals and three snacks, three hours apart. 3. Start cutting back on carbs at noon if you are trying to lose weight. 4. To build muscle, take whey protein and casein protein and mix them and take them after your workout. By mixing those two, you are going to have a steady protein going though your body along with your meals. 5. Be patient. Give yourself a year before you even look at yourself in the mirror. Stay away from the mirror and scales. Eventually you’ll notice your clothes start fitting differently. The scale is a negative, but when you see your clothes fit differently, that’s an incentive. Jack’s Back A Memphis legend takes a look back.

Jesse Owens & Adolf Hitler

of

by JACK EATON

One of the greatest thrills I had in my days as the sports anchor for Channel 5 was back in 1976. Jesse Owens, the greatest track athlete of all time, came to Memphis to promote the Olympic games. His records have all been broken but the legacy he left behind will last forever. Jesse became a folk hero at the Berlin Olympics of 1936. Adolf Hitler was promoting his “Aryan master race” baloney and to say that Jesse threw a monkey wrench into the master plan would be a monster understatement. Jesse won four gold medals–100 and 200 meter dash, the long jump and the 4x100 meter relay. The story goes that Hitler was so upset that he refused to shake Jesse’s hand and left the stadium in disgust. Jesse had a different take. He said that before the race all the athletes were told that Hitler could only stay a certain time and had to leave. When Jesse’s race was over, Hitler was in the process of leaving. Jesse said he was not particularly upset at the time. The crowd wanted the home town boys to win, and when Jesse won the Germans gave him the old Bronx Cheer. The crowd was booing when a German runner came over to Jesse and put his arm around his shoulder. The crowd roared while Jesse and the German did a victory lap around the stadium. When they finished, the crowd went nuts. They cheered themselves hoarse... and Jesse Owens’ place in olympics history was secure. The story goes that when Jesse returned to the good old US of A, President Roosevelt did not invite him to the White House along with the other Olympians. If Jesse was particularly bothered he didn’t show it. But that’s not the whole story. World War II started a few years later. Germany was ultimately reduced to a pile of rubble, but by 1950 the rebuilding was well under way. Back in Ohio, Jesse Owens was going about his business when, out of the blue, he got a letter from Germany. The athlete that had befriended Owens at the Olympic games had been killed in the war. The letter was from

36 | Memphiss SSpo Sport port rt t

his son. He wanted to know if Jesse could come to Germany and be the best man at his wedding. It was obvious the German athlete had spoken about Jesse so often that the son felt like he knew him. Jesse went to Germany, was the best man, had a great time and was interviewed so many times he lost count. The Germans loved him. I got this special time with Owens quite by accident. A few of us media types were invited to stick around, without cameras, and just hang out after his official news conference was over. I found him to be one of the nicest guys I had ever met. He answered all the dumb questions I could think of. Did he hate Hitler? He despised all the things he was supposed to, but as far as his time in Germany during the Olympics, he had no complaints. M Big Jack’s book, “Jack Eaton: Great Scott, I Rhyme A Lot”, is available for purchase in both autographed and non-autographed versions at memphissport.net. Big Jack can be heard every Friday at 8am on KWAM 990 alongside former County Commissioner John Willingham.
