TAIPEI METRO MAP REDESIGN OF INFOGRAPHIC

As the core means of public transport in the city, the Taipei Metro has served billions of passengers over the past twenty-odd years. The route map, which based on geography, was initially designed to reinforce people’s understanding of the urban landscape. As the map continues to develop and expand, however, this geographical basis has come to serve as an impediment to reading efficiency. This case study aims to explore how grid systems, colors, fonts, and other elements could be applied in the graphic, increase the reading efficiency, maximizing its utility in communicating information, and create guidelines that are aesthetically pleasing yet able to be a standard.

[ R1 ] Flaws in Current Map The map which lacking a standard guideline has become complicated after several updates, the arrangement of visual movement and information levels is not ideal.

[ R2 ] Six Criteria to Assess Several criteria had set before starting the work process, ensuring to create a set of guidelines that are aesthetically pleasing yet able to be extended and expanded in future development.

12

COMMUNICATION DESIGN

INFOGRAPHIC

[ L1 ] Route Structure and Station Icons The route structure had been simplified and reserved the space for station names. The circular station icons had also enhanced the difference by hollowed and fulfilled.

[ L2 ] Font Applications By using fonts with a clear structure, higher x-height, and more legible alphabet design, the readability of texts had greatly improved in the new version.

[ R1 ] Colors Usages and Icon Sizes All colors have been slightly adjusted to make the reading process more comfortable. Beside, icon sizes move further down with their levels of information priority, providing visual hints for users to effortlessly capture the information needed.

[ R2 ] Information Classification of Legend To optimize the searching efficiency, different means of public transport were included in the same part. Illustrations of stations and passages, on the other hand, were conveyed in a way that tracks closely to how they look in the main picture, to improve the user’s comprehension.

TAIPEI METRO MAP

Considering the mobile devices and the Internet is maturely developed nowadays, and all kinds of maps are available through various apps, it is time for the metro map to return its fundamental needs, which is to present information about the metro network. Through analyzing, reorganize, and enhance elements in the graphic, the new version of the Taipei Metro map has a directional, concise, and consistent structure. One can swiftly shift their visual focus between different routes and not feel puzzled. It efficiently provides a search function of “How to ride from Station A to Station B.” It is suited for modern users with the aid of apps like Google Maps. Furthermore, the design applies a uniform grid as well as size and color standards, which serves as helpful information for future route map updates.

PROBABILITY EVENT IDENTITY

As a visual identity project and storytelling for TTUID on Yodex Taipei 2018, "Probability" was an attempt to translate our opinion of design into graphic form. Inspired by the colliding of water waves, the design was trying to reflect the unknown and mentality collision of the design process. Using the contrast of red and blue colors, which symbolizes enthusiasm and wisdom, the abstract concept of probability was visualized. The multifaceted design is continued in the invitation, publication, merchandise, and exhibit space, alternating in an enticing way between rationality and emotionality to inspire the viewer.

MAY 2018

PROBABILITY

19

[ R1 ] From Abstract to Visualization As an identity project for the degree show, the original concept was to transform all those mental collisions in the design processes from an abstract state to a graphic form.

[ R2 ] Two Ways to Present The core idea was decomposed into two elements, and presented in the way of implicit and explicit for the different stages.

20

COMMUNICATION DESIGN

VISUAL IDENTITY

[ L1 / L2 ] Primary Element - Water Ripple The image of water ripples' collision served as an inspiration to visualize the contradiction in the design process and became the primary visual element of this project.

21

[ R1 / R2 ] Secondary Element - Color After numerous attempts, an image with strong contrasting colors was finalized and used to extend the relevant visual usage and design guidelines. The red and blue which occupied a large portion also served as symbolizations of passion and wisdom.

[ L1 / L2 ] Way to Present in Different Phases Since the secondary visual element (strong contrasting color) was considered as a more emotional, eye-catching tool, we tried to present it under a gradation in the application of different phases, also symbolized our thinking growth through the graduation project.

25

[ R1 / R2 / R3 ] Unreserved Transmission of Emotion Poster, as the first impression of this exhibit for most people, transmitted our emotions and core ideal without reserved.

[ L2 ] A Captivating Sensory Experience While the curved edge echoed the image of water ripple and enhanced the accessibility of invitation within, the silky sand-like texture of the envelope also created an amusing sense of touch.

[ L3 ] The Probability Responding to the theme "Probability", a portion of the invitation could be separated as a ticket of the raffle.

The Christmas Dancing Party, the significant social activity among several universities, is held every year, with its leading spirit delineated by the design of the event identity. The theme in 2016, "Mystery", presented a captivating vibe in the way of "psychedelic play". Based on this concept, the expressive vapor diffusing horizontal, which is out of physical rules, was adopted as the key visuals. The theme did not convey just the moment when a party occurs, but the aftereffect caused by such communicate, this notion was most clearly expressed in the rectangle space that colored the visual elements, which made the emotional waves triggered by the participants.

The "Design Lecture of Pili-Wu Design" was a non-profit lecture aimed to create a communication platform for the cross-culture designer and students. Being the poster for the event, "Ripple" managed to draw on the characteristics of the speakers and apply visual elements, including merging and minimalist. Concentric circles and water ripples were chosen to transfer metaphors. Constant and expressive circles perfectly interpret the concept of fusion and re-build. The result is an image integrated by visual appeal, visual interest, and multiple connotations, representing a bridge between the worlds of the speakers and spectators.

MUTUALISM MODULAR PUBLIC BENCH

The universality and form of public benches have a decisive influence on whether one feels comfortable in this environment, and even possibly serve as the role of crowd orientation affecting the efficiency and safety of the space using. Mutual- ism's curved form, multiple heights surface, and reconfigurability work together to give users an almost infinite application experience. Curves invisibly provide a harmonious balance between isolated and connected relationships, depending on the intention of each person using the bench. Also, the direction of each module can give the impression of playful lines; both independent and overlayed images can be created.

APR 2018

MUTUALISM

53

[ R1 ] Core Idea This project was an experiment attempt of indoor public furniture aimed to reach a state of mutualism between object, space, and the user, to bring a maximum benefit for all three.

[ R2 ] Keywords "flexible" and "attractive" were the keywords and the bases of its developed.

54

PRODUCT DESIGN

INNOVATION

[ L2 ] Connection In the most common two-user scenario, the Y-shape curves could provide a perfect balance, without creating too much connection or a sense of oppression.

APR 2018

MUTUALISM

55

[ R1 ] Sense of Security Users of group and individual could also have a sense of security by choosing a different attempt to the seat.

[ R2 / R3 ] 37, 47, and 57cm Three different seat heights correspond to different seat types, and the slopes connecting each other also create the possibility of being used as armrests, backrests, etc.

56

PRODUCT DESIGN

INNOVATION

[ L1 ] Potential of Modularity Mutualism's modularity makes it possible to disassembled from a complete individual into five components, and have a stronger potential to apply in scenarios.

[ L2 ] Being More Than Benches With the change in the seat height and the shape of frames, the components could pass through from each other, creating three-dimensional lines in the space and allows it to achieve the function of items placing and the crowds' traffic guiding.

APR 2018

MUTUALISM

57

[ R2 ] 300+ Possibilities Just five components could create more than 300 combinations of lines.

58

PRODUCT DESIGN

INNOVATION

[ L1 ] Integrated into the Environment Since this project aimed to optimize the space and user experience instead of being eye-catching, the setting of color plans was based on the principle of low brightness and inconspicuousness.

[ L2 ] Minimalist and Reconfigurable The simple structural design increases the reliability in mass production without causing high costs.

APR 2018

MUTUALISM

Being usable and appearance-neutral, the continuous form of Mutualism's multiple heights surface eliminates the boundary between the functionalities—conforming entirely to the usage of the bench, chair, and stool to provide a dynamic application in various scenarios. Furthermore, slopes connecting surface from the surface opens up possibilities for experimentation, comes with accessories such as backrests and armrest. The thin but durable frame feels nearly non-existent and offers support while being simplified so that users can randomly reorganize each module. Therefore, benches are no longer just set for sit purposes but have the responsibility and ability to activate the environment. Thanks to its flexible and many-sided usage logic, the Mutualism modular bench is suitable for a variety of applications. Mutualism's color scheme opted for blue and gold in low brightness and saturation, making it more harmoniously integrated into any given environment.
