Exciting Artistic Programming: We came back together to host incredibly moving performances all season including a profoundly moving Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. The 2022-2023 Season will include astounding artists such as Renée Fleming and the Marcus Roberts Trio, and the celebration of the opening of the new Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center.
Meaningful Community Partnerships: We continue to enrich the missions of our artistic and community partners such as Opera Memphis, Ballet Memphis, New Ballet Ensemble, Collage Dance Collective, Memphis Shelby County School District Music Program, Memphis Public Libraries, and many more.
Sound Finances: The MSO has a strong endowment with over $23M invested, a robust reserve fund with over 50 percent of the MSO annual operating budget in cash reserves, no debt, and we have balanced our budget throughout the pandemic.
.
Here are just a few highlights of what we accomplished together in the past two years:
This symphony is far more than a collection of musicians—it is the lifeblood of the cultural pulse of our city. A thriving symphony is essential to creating the artistic landscape that we want to see in Memphis, and I am grateful to have played a part in its success. As I pass the baton to our incoming Board Chair, Jason Farmer, I feel confident in his leadership and in the groundwork we have laid for him. I know that he will not simply keep the course; he will blaze new and exciting trails for us that we have yet to imagine. We have established a firm foundation, and I am looking forward to seeing what we build next. As we venture into a new era, I challenge all of us to consider the story we tell about MSO, its impact, and the integral part we play in making Memphis a city where people want to live, work, and play. We have so much good news to share, and each of us needs to carry that message. Consider bringing someone new with you to a concert next season. Share a compelling story about our work on social media. Be an ambassador for the impact we have in our community and remind people that the symphony is for all Memphians, regardless of background.
My tenure as board chair was marked with the challenge of the pandemic, and I could not be more proud of the fortitude, innovation, and creativity that this team showed during a season when many other similar organizations were forced to shutter their doors. We did not merely survive, we thrived.

I’VE BEEN TO SERVE ON THE MSO BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR SIX YEARS AND WILL SOON BE NAMED THE FIRST BLACK MSO BOARD CHAIR.
Q: Tell us about your personal story. As a young man, I was a member of the Whitehaven High School marching and concert bands, which fortunately led to multiple college scholarships playing tuba and baritone. Yet, the realities of poverty and family positioning as the eldest child of a large family prevented me from attending college. Instead, I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.
BLESSED
One of Memphis’ greatest gifts to humanity has been and continues to be music. MSO plays a critical role in presenting that gift to our local community and the world stage, fully embracing our triumphs and flaws.
Q: In just a short phrase, how would you describe Memphis? Memphis is coming into the fullness of its promise on the strength of rich cultural, industrial, musical, and social justice contributions to the region and the entire world.
Q: How do you see those two connected? Music has always been and is a conduit across time and space that unites communities. MSO has been an essential community driver by embracing and encouraging a diverse appreciation and collaborations of this art form.
Q: Similarly, in a short phrase, how would you describe MSO or the importance of music more broadly?
GET TO KNOW Jason Farmer

Q: How did you become connected with MSO?
Q: Given your interest in film, do you see any other ways MSO can collaborate with other aspects of the arts community in Memphis, including the filmmaking community? For over a decade, my core business has involved film/ entertainment. As our growth accelerates, we will drive opportunities for movie scores, soundtracks, and more than 1,500 music placement needs annually. The development and onboarding of the BLP Film Studios campus represent new possibilities for practitioners to participate in additional revenue streams. Further cementing Memphis as a destination and supporter of the Arts.
THE OF MUSIC, THE DRIVING SUPPORT OF FAMILY AND KEY COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS HAVE TO THIS POINT WHERE I
Q: What is it about MSO that is exceptional and that and how it serves the Memphis community? Even in our community’s darkest hours, we can reflect on our most promising moments, which are always tied to the undeniable thump of music: Inspiring Gospel, Blues, Gritty Rap, Rock and Roll, R/B and the MSO. With the MSO at the forefront of the Arts community and a supporter of all genres and forms. MSO has surpassed being an entity that simply performs concerts in grand halls; we are an indelible part of the heart and soul of Memphis and its success.

CAN FURTHER CARVE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE ARTS FOR ALL.
I took my love of music worldwide and onto battlefields finding solace amid chaos driven by Gospel Music, The Memphis Sound, and Classical Music. My world travels deepened that appreciation and broadened my perspective, allowing me to see how unique the Memphis Spirit is to the fabric of the world.
Q: What has music meant to you throughout your life? My service on the board fully embodies the power, spirit, and possibilities of music. My firmly planted roots remain in The Foote Homes Housing Projects, located in 38126, one of the most impoverished zip codes in the country. Even there, my parents dared to dream and promoted Despiteeducation.being denied an opportunity to pursue a music career in college, my passion sustained me. Now, I am in the position to connect that next music-loving dreamer and help them turn that dream into a reality. I’ve been blessed to serve on the MSO Board of Directors for 6 years and will soon be named the first Black MSO Board Chair. The love of music, the driving support of family and key community connections have propelled me to this point where I can further carve opportunities in the Arts for all.
Spearheaded by a trio of amazing supporters, my introduction to the MSO included unique insight and support as I grew in my role. Years after returning to Memphis, George Cates, my business mentor, and friend, led me to the MSO board through our shared love of classical music. Fellow board member, Gayle Rose, welcomed me and graciously shared the nuances around board service, community building and protecting the MSO legacy. In parallel, Joseph Nelson, my junior high school band director who also worked for MSO, continued to serve as a key influence in my music, life, and career development.
We are well on the way to becoming a self-sustained, transformative, institutional example for other orchestras worldwide due to the hard work and sacrifices of musicians, previous supporters, visionaries, and volunteer board members.
Now as a business owner, I have chosen to build a life for my family here in Memphis, where my love for music began.

By about six months before we publicly announce the season, I distribute “Draft #1” to the artistic and administrative staff. I always feel very excited about that initial draft.
Folks in the business have often said of my first drafts: “Moody creates an incredible first draft of a season. Incredible, that is, if you want four cello concertos, four major choral works, and two Mahler symphonies!” . . . I will admit that I MAY lean a bit heavy to my personal preferences on first drafts!
PerformanceFirstEverinMemphis!
In the months that follow, we work on two tracks at once: actual program ideas, and what dates and venues work in our overall schedule. We look to provide variety (ok, we can’t do 4 cello concertos; but how ‘bout 1 each for cello, and violin?)
So, I thought I’d walk you through a bit of how this process works, and by so doing, give insight into our MSO 2022/2023 concert season: The whole process takes well over a year to complete. For me it starts with ideas jotted down on scraps of paper, or on backs of envelopes/napkins, and - these days - on the “notes” app on my phone. I randomly think of a work that hasn’t crossed my mind in some years, or a conversation at dinner brings a work to mind, or someone tells me about an exciting new solo artist that I should learn more about. Soon after this, we hold a “brainstorming” session with the MSO players. They’ll call out names of works they’ve been wanting to play for quite some time, or of exciting new guest artists they played with at a summer festival, etc.
The best part of my job is the obvious part – getting to conduct an orchestra. This is especially true when it’s an amazing group of musicians like our Memphis Symphony Orchestra!
A very close second-best part of the job is programming our concerts. I don’t do this part alone; a large number of people get involved in the process, making sure we keep tweaking each draft until we feel confident we’ve created a season of programs with great variety, excitement, and artistic/ entertainment excellence.
8 | MEMPHIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SUMMER 2022 |2223SEASON OVERVIEW SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
We make sure styles of music are well represented. Do we have strong offerings from Classical, Romantic, Modern eras - even movie and pop music on the docket?
I then become laser focused on thinking about the “journey” of each concert. When we all gather for a concertperformers and audience - that group of people will have never been assembled in that exact permutation. And they will never be assembled in that permutation again. That concept blows me away; it makes me realize the precious and unique shared experience we’ll have together. From the moment of tuning through the last chord, we should feel we’ve gone on a journey – an adventure – together. Sometimes the journey is pure joy and celebration, sometimes the journey of music takes us through difficult, soul wrenching moments. But there has been an arc to the experience, and we rode the ride together. When this happens, and when you sense it in the expression of everyone around you, THIS is when I know we’ve done our job.
We work with artist managements and venues like the Cannon Center to make sure available dates line up well.
ElectrifyingJazzEnsemble ROBERTSMARCUSTRIOFLEMINGRENÉE

MSO’s commitment to championing voices traditionally underrepresented in classical music, we ensure that we program a woman, black, or Hispanic composer or soloist on every concert. An exciting exploration of fantastic compositions by Black composers, including music of Quinn Mason, William Grant Still, Scott Joplin, Kathryn Bostic, Florence Price, and many more! There will also be some built in surprises on concerts. Maybe a cool piece here and there, which we aren’t publicizing ahead of time! Also, great “out of the box” ideas –like music from “E.T.” to kick off a masterworks concert. I believe every concert we offer will take you on a journey of wonder, power, and inspiration. Come check them out; we can’t wait to take these journeys with you!

WHAT DAY DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE END OF THE HOLIDAY SEASON?
MEMPHIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SUMMER 2022 | 15
In 2010 Monica Sanchez co-founded Cazateatro Bilingual Theater Group (Cazateatro). The theater group produces plays in both English and Spanish, and creates an environment conducive for learning. “People who just came here [to Memphis] can have a chance to learn English. The actors learn English and Spanish lines, even if they don’t speak the language.”
For some, it may be the first of the year; that after a long haul from Thanksgiving to Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa, there is finally time for a breather. For others however, particularly those in Spanish-speaking nations, the holiday season wraps up with El Dia de los Reyes, or Three Kings Day on January 6th. If you would like to learn more, why not begin with Abuela Tomasa reading the children’s book Celebrate Christmas and Three King’s Day with Pablo y Carlitos accompanied by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra?

In addition to promoting reading comprehension, “Tunes and Tales” also helps to introduce young listeners to the instruments of the orchestra. After the performance, children engage with MSO musicians and are led through interactive activities and crafts to reflect on what they heard and Sanchezsaw.
KATIE BROWN is a viola player and member of the MSO Musician Fellowship Program where she is The Ellen Cooper Klyce & Martha Milford Boyd Fellow. She started playing viola at the age of 9. Katie aspires to be an orchestral musician and says her choice to join the University of Memphis program allows her the opportunity to reach that goal while earning an Artist Diploma. Katie is also the co-host of a podcast called Classically Black Podcast where she and a friend discuss classical music from the Black perspective. a lot of performing arts organizations. Dressed as Abeula Tomasa, your sweet and caring grandmother, Sanchez began reading books to children online. The books share different aspects of Latino culture and highlight the events and celebrations of the season. Abuela Tomasa took her weekly storytelling in-person in collaboration with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and their “Tune and Tales” series as part of the Christmas Fiesta on Saturday December 18th at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens.

chose Celebrate Christmas and Three King’s Day with Pablo y Carlitos, by Alma Flor Ada and Isabel Campoy, about the celebration of Three Kings Day through the eyes of Carlitos, a young boy who is learning about the holiday. Abuela Tomasa, assisted by her friend Gingerbread, was well received by an audience of all ages. The children, some dressed in their pajamas, crowded to the front of the audience to get a better view while the adults reveled in the beauty of the story, music, and memories from their childhood. Eliana Acevedo, a bilingual mentor with Newcomer International Center said, “…the performance was spectacular; it touched my heart. I feel overwhelmed because I felt connected with my childhood.”
Sanchez adopts a global perspective in the hopes of encouraging harmony among patrons and the Memphis community. “As community leaders we have the duty to educate…we have more things that can unite us than separate us [and] that is the hope, to find the things that unite us.”
THE MSO’S TUNES AND TALES SERIES MAKES READING COME TO LIFE WITH LIVEENHANCEMENTTHEOFMUSIC.
Two of the MSO performers were Katie Brown and Estefan Perez, members of the inaugural class of the MSO’s Musician Fellowship Program. Sponsored by the Circle of Friends, the Fellowship Program provides orchestral experience to Black and Latinx string players. The program also includes a tuition-free graduate degree from the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, performance and community service opportunities, and leadership and mentorship training.

If the Memphis music community is anything, it is resilient! Despite the past unforeseen and unprecedented circumstances of these past few years, our Memphis Symphony Orchestra has continued to present creative and brilliant artistic performances for our enjoyment. The innovative programming, venues and media delivery options have kept us music lovers and the Memphis community engaged and entertained. With each performance, in person attendance has increased and there is an excitement building as this year’s season opens. This year is poised to be one of the most spectacular seasons ever!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED US SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER WITH AN HONORARIUM SUPPORTING THE MEMPHIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: SYMPHONYMEMPHISLEAGUE2021-2022 BOARD OF DIRECTORSOFFICERS IN APPRECIATION OF DR. DAN AND AMY MEADOWS
Recognizing the dependency of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO) upon donations, in 1959, a group of civic minded women and men formed a sponsoring body for the orchestra to increase ticket sales, provide education, optimize awareness and appreciation for the Orchestra, and raise funds. This Memphis Symphony League (MSL) continues today to directly support the MSO through all its activities. These primarily include diverse fundraising social events, and volunteer support for educational and other community programs, as well as any other orchestral needs. Open to everyone, the MSL works actively to realize its mission to be the best Symphony League in its ongoing support of the MSO.

Dedicated and committed to reaching all members of our diverse community, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra also provides extensive community outreach, including programs in our schools and libraries, the Youth Symphony and lots more. This is only possible through your generous donations. One of the best ways to donate is to become a member of the Memphis Symphony League. By joining the League, you will become part of a fun, dynamic group of men and women who actively support the Orchestra through educational activities, special events, financial contributions, fund-raising and volunteer opportunities. Your tax-deductible membership will directly support all of the Orchestra’s programs. The League already has numerous upcoming opportunities for its members including a Welcome Party September 12, Annual Holiday Tea at the Peabody Hotel December 9 and the Annual MSL Luncheon is back February 7. So please mark your calendar and join or renew your membership today! We want you, your family and friends to be an active part of this vibrant, incredible group supporting our Orchestra. We look forward to seeing you at the Welcome Party as we kick off this fabulous season!

20 | MEMPHIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA SUMMER 2022 WHAT INSTRUMENT DO YOU PLAY?
WHAT HAS IT MEANT TO YOU TO MAKE MEMPHIS YOUR HOME? Memphis resonates with my soul. Though I was not born in Memphis I feel I was destined to become a Memphian because the characteristics that we are so proud of in our city were present in my own life. Memphis was a magnet that drew me here and Memphis has been very good to me ever since. Memphis is a place of great people, great opportunity, and great food. That makes it home for me.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO MAKE MUSIC FOR MEMPHIS?
AND A MEET MUSICIAN:THE WES LEBOQ
Trombone WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Greenville, South Carolina WHERE DID YOU STUDY?
I believe that music is a bridge for the community for healing. Personal healing and the healing of community and beyond. I believe music is a vehicle that expands our hearts, our minds, our vision, our dreams, hope, and aspirations. So from this perspective, this is what I feel and want to give to our audience and community. But as with any relationship, the process is not a one-way street from musician to audience or community. The Memphis community shapes our music. There is something very exciting, real, and uniquely expressive about the music we make together that is shaped by the Memphis community. The Memphis Symphony orchestra is not a collection of musicians making music to entertain Memphis. We are Memphians making music for and with Memphis. So the grit and grind and excitement and boldness of our wonderful city is in our blood and in our music.

THE CURRENT
THE COURSE
For eons, the women sat along the bank of the mighty Mississippi, washed over like river stones molded by time and water. No one realized their strength because everyone was focused on their beautiful smoothness. They waited, knowing they would someday be called to participate in something far greater than themselves. Separated by race and circumstance, most never met one another but shared an unspoken yearning to heal the brokenness of their Oncommunity.amoonlit night, exquisite music from a distant concert hall was carried by a roving wind to the women on the riverbank. Their souls were stirred by the melodic notes of the instruments. They felt called into a big, bold vision: to come together though intentional inclusion and invite others to join the amazing journey soon to unfold. One by one, each arose and threw herself into the river, causing ripples that carried the music. The ripples grew into an eddy, cascading out farther and farther. Soon the river water became rapid and perilous, threatening to break the circle apart, and push them under the surface. The women clung tightly with strength and resolve, uniting to protect one another, holding their shared vision up in the water.
RIVER THE EDDY BY
For ten years, the women moved as a single, unwavering current lifting their purpose even in the harshest water. By and by, their formidable presence was noticed by others of like-mind who joined their movement. They continue to work to bring forth music that joins all people together no matter how life and culture have kept them apart. The Circle is recognized in the increased inclusivity of the MSO’s audience and patron based. Now it has embarked on its final stage to “come full circle” – THE MUSICIAN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM in partnership with the University of Memphis – to impact the orchestra itself. With the understanding that this mission – bringing broad-based inclusivity into the performing arts – will take years to develop, the Circle’s vision has created an opportunity to place the MSO in a leadership position to strengthen the vibrancy of our cultural center and mirror the community in which we live and love.
