A WORD FROM THE CO-FOUNDER & DIRECTOR

A professor of mine once told me that if you understand design as a problem solving process, you can design pretty much anything. For the past four years, we have been working hard to design the perfect Beirut Design Week, and it has been a long and arduous journey with many lessons that are inherent to any design project. By applying our understanding of good design we have been able to grow and develop into a successful platform of which we are very proud. Good design is collaborative, and we have managed to bring together thousands of people to share our passion. Good design is adaptive and learns to deal with a lot of restrictions; and we definitely have our share in that. Good design is humancentered, and every year we listen to our audiences to better develop the BDW experience, by bringing in new knowledge and expertise to aid in developing our growing creative industry. Good design is also an experimental and iterative process, which allows us to try new things every year, and often learn from our mistakes. Doreen Toutikian is currently the President of the board of MENA Design Research Center and the executive Director. She has been running the Beirut Design Week since its initiation in 2012.

From the very beginning, we were a grassroots movement fueled by young passion and a longing for change. We, the MENA Design Research Center, as a non-profit organization, exist as an entity that believes in the power of creative people, and are determined to do our job well. It has always been one of our main goals to bring our city to the international standards it well deserves; and nowadays, Beirut Design Week is making headlines from Helsinki to New York. This year, we are at a whole new level. I am very much looking forward to how our participants will interact with our theme ‘Social Beings’ and how our principles will be conveyed through our international conference that is focusing on the value of design in social impact, business, and technology. With a growing audience every year we hope to be the inclusive platform that brings together people from all walks of life to engage in dialogue around our common passion: Design.

Doreen Toutikian Director, MENA Design Research Center

As a truly collaborative project, Beirut Design Week depends on all the people that work hard at bringing together one of the regions largest events. This year we have been dealing with over 150 participants, and dozens of partners. Between strategic planning, communications, logistics, graphic design, PR, copywriting, marketing, animation, exhibition design, and various other tasks, a growing family of devoted and creative people emerges.

DOREEN TOUTIKIAN: Director Doreen works way too much. All her friends and family members have conspired to kidnap her away from the office after BDW is over.

VROUYR JOUBANIAN: Project Manager V is a perfectionist with a vengeance for every non-perfect detail. His passion for monochromatic things and order surpasses his love for anything.

BDW2015 | 15

STEPHANY ASSIO: Graphic Designer Steph is a nature freak constantly thinking of doing sports and going camping every weekend. In our office, she’s a very rare species.

ABBAS SBEITY: Project Coordinator Abbas is a meticulous go-getter, he seems shy at first, but soon enough we realized he’s a force to be reckoned with. He keeps us all in line.

LOUAI KAAKANI: Communications Officer Louai is our sweet talker. Whenever disasters are about to occur, all its takes is one phone call from our boy, and he’ll habibi his way out of anything.

MARTA BIELIK: International Marketing Marta is the energetic beam of light that can speak 1000 words under a second. Her stories of East Germany & worldwide travels will amaze you.

CREATIVE PUNCH: Design & Branding These ladies are our graphic design fairies that designed the concept and all visual essentials for BDW. We have a long history together.

PIXEL 4 THOUGHT: Animation Usually in a dark corner, these 3 mostly render things all day. They are nocturnal creatures with powers to create amazing things on screens -that move.

MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENE TELLTALE: PUBLIC RELATIONS A bunch of fun loving and intelligent ladies who really helped take BDW to the next level.

S O C I A L B E ABOUT THE MENA DRC

The MENA Design Research Center is a non-profit organization, founded in Beirut in 2010 that focuses on the role of Design in entrepreneurship, education, and social impact. The conception of the center is based on Doreen Toutikian’s master thesis developed in the Koeln International school of Design, as a result of a year long study on Design Education in the Middle East. Taking Lebanon as a case study, the research enquires about the situation of Design as a discipline in academic discourse as well an integral part of the creative industry. The goal of the MENA DRC is to develop Design within all capacities in order to align it with international standards. The principles of Design Research are the foundations on which the center’s strategic planning is based, taking into account a variety of social, cultural, and environmental challenges that are relevant to the region. The creative process involved in problem finding & solving – whether in communications, products, systems or services – could be applied to a varied scale of disciplines and fields. The MENA Design Research Center promotes this diverse understanding of design through the implementation of design research and collaborative multidisciplinary projects in the region.

Unlike market research, which is consumed with statistics and quantitative data, design research is concentrated more on qualitative information. Borrowing from social and cultural studies, and interpreting through a designer’s lens is what makes this form of data collection and retrieval unique when compared to other research fields. The MENA Design Research Center is highly involved with social initiatives that concern people and contributes to a variety of social issues by developing innovative tools through design thinking and co-creation. The center is also closely linked to design education in order to encourage and guide the participation of designers in the noncommercial, public, and non-profit domains. Apart from Beirut Design Week, MENA DRC develops collaborative projects with local, regional and international institutions; such projects include Desmeem (desmeem.org), Disrupt! Design! as well as on going research projects that involve a variety of social and cultural challenges that are prominent within the center’s environment.

For the last three years Beirut Design week has not had a theme, since the focus was to develop a clear brand identity of the event itself. Now in the fourth consecutive year, the first theme of Beirut Design Week is: ‘Social Beings’. Beirut Design Week is a growing successful platform because of Beirut and its people. The dynamics of the design industry mixed with our hybrid culture of ingenuity and chaos is what sparks the creativity in this city, and BDW reflects that spirit. This is also why the theme this year is “Social Beings’ in celebration of the people that

truly make this event unique though their interactions by sharing their knowledge and exhibiting their talent. Moreover, design is not just about objects, but it is about the people who make them, and the design process that is unique to each creator. Throughout Beirut Design Week, we have witnessed every year new participants engaging others in their creative process through workshops, open studios, talks, discussion panels, exhibitions, tours, film screenings, and all sorts of creative and knowledge building interactions. The larger the Beirut Design Week community grows, the more content it

I N G S

brings to the program, and therefore, the public learns more about Design in a variety of methods. Without its creative human beings being social, Beirut Design Week would lose its richness and diversity; therefore, in honor of the people that truly make BDW happen, we salute them, and thank them for giving us one of the best weeks of the year.

OUR THREE CORE PRINCIPLES FROM AESTHETICS TO VALUE Design is beyond aesthetics and more about value. As our theme for this year’s International Conference is focused on the value of Design in technology, business and social impact, we will be discovering where design thinking can take institutions, brands, and businesses. For a long time, people thought that design was just the end product: the beautiful cover on engineering, or the luxury brand stamped to legitimize overpriced products. Nowadays, scholars from all corners of the world as well as business owners from silicon valley to Taipei have proven that Design is much more than what it was once thought to be. This year, we will be exploring exactly what values design brings to the discourse in our round table discussions at the end of each day of the BDW conference, with international guests from renown global institutions and corporations ranging from Bang & Olufsen to IBM and Philips as well as local and regional experts.

FROM ELITISM TO INCLUSIVENESS Design is a democratic right to all people, and must not only serve the 1%. When services and products are well designed, they serve a common purpose, which is to facilitate our lives. This is why in many countries of the world, designers are influencers in public institutions and they research the needs of people, and develop better and more sustainable ways of living. In Lebanon, this is still a future that we long to see as responsible designers, and we believe that if we push for that agenda as a community, we are bound to achieve some of our goals for a better public life. However, there needs to be a shift in the minds of many designers and architects who must consider moving away from egoism and elitism. By focusing less on highincome projects dedicated to a small niche clientele and thinking of their responsibility as Lebanese citizens living in an extremely unsustainable environment with a high density of social challenges, design can become more inclusive. Through many of our workshops, we try to address these topics, and develop projects or themes based on social and environmental challenges.

FROM DICTATION TO DIALOGUE We do not dictate what good design is, but open the platform for dialogue in order for the public to think about what they perceive as “good design and why.

T D I L

H E W N C I E S

It is an essential part of critical thinking, of which we are determined advocates, to question all that is popular, especially in the field of design that is threatened by so many commercial death traps. Our platform is one where the organizer does not have the final say, and where freedom of speech is respected. We take the feedback we get from the public and our participants very seriously, and we try to accommodate to the needs of our audience as much as possible. We are also open to criticism and even encourage it towards our design scene and our events. Without dialogue, there can either be silence or dictation, and Beirut Design Week is not the place for either. Through our conferences, talks, open discussions, social media channels, promotion of local bloggers and media, we set the space for ideas to transcend, connect, reflect, and re-iterate.

20 | BDW2015

EXPLORE, INTERACT & LEARN We believe that multimedia and multisensorial methods are most efficient in conveying ideas. Therefore, we don’t just exhibit design, we encourage people to speak it, craft it, hear it, interact with it, eat it, walk it, and experience it in every way possible. This is why we engage our audience in diverse ways to create a wider understanding of what design can be. Through workshops, talks, exhibitions, film screenings, conferences, discussion panels, open studios, collection launches, networking events, tours, performances, parties, and public interventions or installations, we ensure that there is something for everybody to enjoy. Every year, the variety of events increases, and our social beings always come up with new interactive ways to bring their events to life and attract hundreds of visitors per day. This year Beirut Design Week will witness a staggering collection of events, with more than 25 happenings daily.

WORKSHOPS Workshops can be hands-on or theoretical. The distinctive feature of workshops is that participants must register and might be subject to a fee.

CONFERENCE Conferences are usually longer than 2 hours with more than one speaker, and focused around a certain theme.

T H E E V E N T

BDW2015 | 21

TALKS Talks are usually no longer than an hour by a singular speaker who will inform the audience about personal experience and expertise.

EXHIBITIONS & OPEN STUDIOS Exhibitions and open studios are the most common forms of events as they introduce visitors to the participants spaces and encourage dialogue.

MAIN EVENTS Main events are developed are organized by MENA Design Research Center who is the initiator and organizer of Beirut Design Week.

COMPETITIONS Competitions are usually open to everyone with prizes for the best outcomes developed by the participants.

FILM SCREENINGS Film screenings are yet a another way to inform participants through multimedia about certain topics relating to design & architecture.

TOURS Tours are walking visits around the city to discover certain aspects that involve design and craftsmanship.

PARTIES & DINNERS These events are usually fun and dynamic, allowing people to meet each other in informal settings.

URBAN INTERVENTIONS Urban interventions are designed to create an interactive dialogue with citizens in the streets and to make a statement in an unconventional manner.

RE-DISCOVER THE CREATIVE CITY BEIRUT SOUKS & SAIFI VILLAGE The launching of Beirut Design Week starts at the heart of our city. Beirut Souks is the historical commercial core, which sustained heavy destruction during the Lebanese civil war. Nowadays rebuilt by Solidere, whilst maintaining the ancient Greek street grid, it hosts our main exhibition spaces that house our international and local designers. This year we will be featuring in the Gold Souks the Dutch and Finnish Design Exhibitions, as well as the local Based in Beirut, and The Makers Exhibitions. Our destination after the launch in the souks continues by walking to the nearby neighborhood of Saifi Village at the southeastern periphery of Downtown Beirut. This area, located at the former Green Line during the Lebanese Civil War was reconstructed in the 1990’s. Saifi Village bears the visible mark of Lebanese heritage, blending the charm of traditional Levantine architecture with modern urban living. Nowadays it is an upscale residential neighborhood with a cluster of designer boutiques that have supported Beirut Design Week from the very beginning.

GEMMAYZE & SURSOCK Gemmayze is characterized by colonial architecture from the French Era in Lebanon. The two main streets, Gouraud and Pasteur, are known for their mixed commercial and residential aspects. Since the end of the civil war, the area was one of the first to undergo gentrification. A decade ago, it used to be the bars area of Beirut, but nowadays the focus has moved to the neighboring area Mar Mikhael, leaving room for designer boutiques and cafés, as well as offices above the ground floors. Sursock is named after one of Beirut’s most renowned aristocratic families. Located south of Gemmayze, the area is home to some of the few remaining palaces of the Sursock Family, one of which is the currently renovated Sursock Museum. Within the narrow connected streets of Gemmayze and Sursock reside some of Beirut Design Week’s famous designers that inhabit beautiful houses of Lebanese heritage.

KARANTINA & MAR MIKHAEL

Achrafieh is one of the largest parts of East Beirut, situated on a hill, hence the name in Arabic which refers to its elevated geography. The area is divided into smaller neighborhoods, which include Tabaris, Furn el Hayek, Sassine, Sodeco, Monot, Abdel Wahab, Geatawi, and Fassouh.

Karantina is a semi-industrial northeastern neighborhood located next of the port of Beirut, and separated from Mar Mikhael with the Charles Helou highway. The name comes from the word quarantine, as it was a location for travelers who arrived at the Port. The area was also home to many refugees and settlers throughout history. However, it is mostly known for its unique nightclub designed to look as a bomb shelter, BO18. An increasing number of art galleries have opened in the area, two of which are BDW participants from the very beginning. Mar Mikhael is currently the hippest area of Beirut, home to the trendiest bars, restaurants and cafés. The area used to be filled with car garages and craftsmen, and now houses many furniture and product designers. Every year, BDW spends its Fridays there.

HAMRA & VERDUN

BOURJ HAMMOUD & JISR EL WATI

Hamra is one of the busiest parts of West Beirut. It is considered one of the main economic and diplomatic hubs of Beirut as well as home to two of Lebanon’s oldest universities: the American University of Beirut and the Lebanese American University. The area is filled with bars, cafés, restaurants, hotels, and shops as well as offices and residential buildings. Verdun, named in honor of the Battle of Verdun during World War I, is another commercial center south of Hamra.

Bourj Hammoud is one of the most densely populated areas of northeast Beirut. It is home to many Armenians as well as the craftsmen communities. From leather works to metal and wood workshops , the tiny narrow streets and filled with little ateliers working away like a giant factory. The commercial centers are found on Arax Street, and the street of spices is Maraash Street. Every year, a tour of the neighborhood is organized during Beirut Design Week to discover Bourj Hammoud’s hidden gems.

A MANIFESTO OF CHANGE OR DESIGN IMPERIALISM? A LOOK AT THE PURPOSE OF SOCIAL DESIGN PRACTICE The term ‘social design’ has recently become one of a buzzword for designers to describe a form of design that seeks to investigate the designer’s role in society by tackling community, political, and social issues. But there are a number of issues and questions that arise surrounding the context, attitudes, intentions and measuring results. This presentation critiques the discipline of social design by highlighting key issues in the discourse and practices of ‘social design’ projects, and offers a brief guide on how social design projects can truly begin to engage in debates and shift the discourse to be more inclusive and sensitive.

APPROACHING DESIGN CRITICALLY IN THE MIDDLE EAST Today we are witnessing a boom in the design world in the Middle East. What does that really mean? New programs, fairs and multiple brands have popped up across a range of design categories. How will this affect the future development in the region? Creating a critical design conversation is vital, not only to spread awareness about a domain that can nurture real social change but also to educate and empower the future generations. What platforms can we use to engage people and widen our reach? Beirut is a big player but what are we still lacking in terms of manufacturing, context and caliber? How should we define the genres? What questions should be asked and how can technology play a role in our development? How can be better think, talk, curate and shift design ideals in our area where the luxury, high end, one-off and handmade are drivers? Her talk will be an overview of the purpose of design, culture and innovation and the importance and challenge of speaking the ‘design language’ to the masses.

DESIGNING MAGICAL EXPERIENCES Bang & Olufsen was founded in Struer, Denmark, in 1925 by Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen, two innovative, young engineers devoted to high quality audio reproduction. Since then, the brand has become an icon of performance and design excellence through its longstanding craftsmanship tradition and the strongest possible commitment to high-tech research and development. Still at the forefront of domestic technology, Bang & Olufsen has extended its comprehensive experience with integrated audio and video solutions for the home to other areas such as the hospitality and automotive industries in recent years.

as a young teenager. When he was 17 he bought his first loop station. This tool made it possible for the young musician – who so far hadn’t had much to do with Recording software – to produce and perform new beats. This was the starting gun for Julian Maier+Hauff as live act. In 2014 the young artist switched from the loop station to a new setup. Recently he’s been working mainly analog in combination with the advantages of digital sound processing. His sound always stays true to it’s playful characteristic traits. By using live instruments, that are either played as a soloist or subtly alienated the sound seeks to be organic and very human.

TECHNOLOGY MATTERS Ever since Milliam Morris and Hermann Muthesius, the relationship between design and technology has played a decisive role into shaping the evolution of the former. Today, this relationship has become more critical than ever. This lecture will first look back at this long and convoluted relationship and then try to give a critical overview of the major shifts currently taking place in design as a result of recent technological developments.

TIMEBOX BEIRUT What if we were able to walk through 1920 Beirut today? Timebox Beirut is an urban trail of early 20th century stereographs on the streets of Beirut. Each timebox holds one stereograph at the location where it was originally taken 100 years ago. A stereograph is the right-eye and left-eye view of the same scene that together create a single threedimensional image when viewed through a stereoscope. Each timebox places the viewer’s point of view within the perspective of the original stereograph, creating a tactile-spatial visual imprint and instigating an instant visual juxtaposition between past and present - and possibly a glimpse into the future?

These coupled with the rapid changes in technology are challenging the health-care systems across the globe. In this talk, we get insight into how Philips’ global design team is helping make sense of these changes so we can all understand the most meaningful methods to reimagine the experiences that can (and will) save lives.

HOW TO BUILD A DESIGN-DRIVEN BUSINESS The past decade has seen design shift from being an afterthought to permeating the very fabric of the world’s most successful businesses. Still, companies fundamentally driven by a people-centered design approach are rare, and most founders today are businesspeople and engineers. How does one foster a culture of entrepreneurial design in order to create better products and services that put people first? The Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design (CIID) seeks to address this need by uniting education, research, consulting, and a startup incubator to attract, retain, and support some of the most talented design entrepreneurs across disciplines.

INTERNET OF EVERYONE – TOOLS FOR EMPOWERMENT Critical and cross-cultural as well as inclusive and socially-informed design approaches have helped form an understanding of design as a practice with a high potential for societal transformation. BEFORE WE START, IF WE START WITH DANAH ABDULLA AT MENA DRC 05 June, 10am-4pm 06 June, 2pm-5pm

Design culture in Beirut is quickly becoming more prominent, but what is being done to formally map out the different design networks? How can we begin to understand the historical evolution of design in the city? As designers and cultural practitioners, we all know someone who knows someone who knows who knows someone…and in this two-day workshop, we work with co-design research methods to crowdsource information from participants on Beirut designers from the past and the present. The aim of the workshop is to visually consolidate names of designers into a visual form, providing a guide to people from all over the world regarding designers in the city and instigating further research into both contemporary and historical design practices in Beirut. With a speculative version in place, the map evolves beyond the workshop as it is then translated into a website where the project continues to crowdsource information from visitors. 2B DESIGN Furniture Design

The story of 2b design starts when the French designer Benedicte de Vanssay de Blavous Moubarak moved with her husband Raja and their children to Beirut. Benedicte became immediately drawn to the unique style of traditional Levantine houses. The desire to keep alive a disappearing architectural heritage was the spark that started the project. In 2006 2b design was born, a small social enterprise transforming 18th, 19th and early 20th architectural salvage and other reclaimed materials into one of a kind handcrafted home dĂŠcor items. Beyt, its flagship brand, is made of 90% reclaimed pieces. Discarded wrought iron balustrades, window frames and old wooden doors become tables, lamps, mirrors and candleholders. FROM RUBBLE TO YOUR HOME WORKSHOP Let us show you what it takes to make a Beyt piece; clean, restore, apply patina. Make a lampshade and discover how architectural salvage is transformed into a one of a kind handcrafted home dĂŠcor item.

APRACTICE STUDIO Architecture and New Media

Founded in 2009 by two architects and a new media designer, apractice is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Beirut. a /à/ ; the prefix meaning “not” or “without”, is the idea that the studio is based on; the desire to constantly think from within and without preconceived possibilities of the architectural discipline. We strongly believe that design can be an active tool of criticism; an empowering mode of resistance towards established preconceptions regarding the built environment. We operate across multiple modes of adaptation and transformation, making spaces, buildings and objects that engage with various issues, responding through the use of architectural tools. BUILDING AS ARTIFACT IN CLEMENCEAU On-site installation and opportunity to re-discover a familiar modern building in Beirut. By conducting an autopsy on the building, we re-introduce it in our collective memory as an “artifact”, located in the historical development of the urban fabric.

The stool “reverence” was exhibited at Karim Bekdache, platform 39 and mysouk; the online platform as well as “Meet My Project Paris 2015” in Paris. Also, my interest in geometrical welldefined shapes and the combination of different materials allows me to create simple yet unique pieces. My upcoming product line (Honey collection) reflects this philosophy with the bold lines, sharp edges and the use of unexpected material merged together. It is based on a honeycomb structure made out of a single modular steel element assembled by rivets. Intended for working women in urban environments, DINA JSR puts forward a wardrobe for contemporary needs that is both practical and luxurious, always easy to dress up or down. Created by a former gemologist, it follows a similar earthly sensibility: organic shades, sculptural volumes, a daily, elegant shield that shelters and empowers the woman inside. It is a cross between the three cultures: it bears the urban, forward thinking experimentation of London, the artisanal know-how of Parisian atelier practice and the sheer sensuality and luxurious ornamentation of traditional Lebanese sensibility. HADI MAKTABI Carpet Design

The Gallery specializes in collectible/decorative carpets and artworks. It relies on a subtle balance between the charm of oriental art and a contemporary outlook. Most objects are antique, varying in age across the 16th—19th centuries. Carpets, textiles and antiquities range across the cultural landscapes of the Ottoman, Persian and Russian empires. Silk objects with royal provenance are complemented by modernist yet old tribal art works from the Caucasus and Central Asia. Our mission is to exhibit and present these antique art works in deliberately contemporary settings amidst modern furnishings and interiors. We believe that the innate refinement of aesthetic and design, among the unschooled artists of the past, is timeless. CECI N'EST PAS UN TAPIS Witness the unfolding of the multiple layers of a carpet by deconstructing symbols and rearranging patterns. While the design process evolves publicly, guests are invited to reconstruct carpets in their own mental space while viewing an exhibition of antique rugs alongside a lecture and a hands-on session.

50|50 is a design platform driven by the liminal and operating on, in and between boundaries. Founder Ieva Saudargait, born in Lithuania and raised in the UAE, is a Lithuanian-Lebanese architect and photographer whose work is compelled by forms, analogies and story telling. Having intensely pursued architectural photography and visual documentation of the built environment over the last few years, the architect confronts the photographer with questions that have since emerged, thus resulting in 50|50. Peeping tOms is the first reaction to question number one: In what space do viewer and photographer meet? Derived from the act of framing, Peeping tOms are spatio-ocular devices designed to transform the experience of perceiving a photographic work. Jesse Marion Bowley is an artist-inresidence at American Community School Beirut. Her design vocabulary is heavily influenced by years living abroad in Asia and the Middle East, where an appetite for geometry, simplicity and asperity has been nourished. Recent projects include woven and hand-blocked textiles, photography and metal sculpture. Expressed within a strict color palette, the varying works are consistently minimal, but invigorated by painterly and irregular patterning. During Beirut Design Week, she will debut a limited collection of meter-square fabric pieces, inspired by Japanese furoshiki. Furoshiki, a centuries-old technique, is the art of bundling, folding and knotting a simple square of fabric into multiple configurations. BASED IN BEIRUT: COLLECTIVE EXHIBITION OF INDEPENDENT DESIGNERS As every year the MENA Design Research Center, selects up to 15 newcomers and young designers to promote as one of its main exhibitions of the year. JOE FISH Creative Boutique Agency

Joe Fish began as an idea. Trapped in an unwholesome advertising industry, he felt like a goldfish swimming in circles. He made up his mind to strike out on his own, in search of a place where the seaweed is greener. On February 7, 2010, Joe Fish was officially founded as a creative boutique agency with the sole goal of sharing beautiful ideas. Like-minded individuals soon joined in, average Joes with hearts bigger than their egos, and together they formed a multidisciplinary team with a wide range of talents and a common love for their craft. MELTING POINT: A VISUAL NARRATIVE This year, Joe Fish will exhibit scenarios of unprecedented confrontation be-tween social beings and their uncommon fears. The event demonstrates an exaggeration of unnatural equilibrium where eccentricity is acknowledged and embraced. Melting Point is a liquefaction process that aims to dissolve the barriers towards becoming a social being, through accepting oneself and the others. To translate all that to English: There will be an interesting exhibition with good music and lots of drinks.

LIWAN Product Designer

The “House Wear” and the “Lounge wear” in LIWAN Paris-Beirut offer a new idea of the east. In Liwan every object is unique. Handmade. Inspired by the past. Adapted to the present. A lightened vision filled with innovation and modernity in terms of materials, cuts, colors. Twenty years of creation signed Lina Audi: a living and simplified version of forms, built upon an ancestral savoir-faire, that of the artisans of the Middle-East, and of Lebanon in particular. Traditional objects are transformed into modern pieces. Easy to wear, to carry, to adapt. They’re the bridge between the old and the new. They’re what are left when the pointless has been plucked out. For example, the Liwan Sandals that have made appearances all around the world… Liwan maintains its focus around the same constant: a dream without exotica, luxury without excess. The fusion of fashion and memory. One can’t find everything at Liwan, but what one does find is unique. LEBELIK Online Platform

Lebelik was founded on a vision that Lebanese quality, fashion and design could and should be available to everyone. With that in mind, twins and business partners Michel and Louise Doumet launched their venture in New York, in Spring 2011. The concept was simple – to help Lebanese designers share their work with people around the world. To build a community of fashion lovers that could come together on one platform that showcases Lebanese design. Now, three years later, Lebelik is home to over 60 of Lebanon’s most talented designers, and 2,500 of their creations. Inspired by the designers we work with, we came out with a completely new identity and web experience in 2014, to give Lebanese design the home it deserves. WORKSHOP FOR KIDS AT VILLA SURSOCK Lebelik is launching its Kids section in June. We would like to sponsor and organize arts & crafts workshops for children during Beirut Design Week. These workshops would be catered to different age groups (pre-teens, tweens, and teenagers), and interests (sartorial, craftsmanship, handicrafts).

PLATAU Architecture and Urban Design

Our proposal is experimentation with the properties of the rattan. Rattan is a light material that can gather strength by bending and by grouping several stems together. The idea here is to create with the rattan stem a loop that will, by bending around itself, achieve the needed strength to create a chair’s basic profile. We then connect one stem to the next creating a continuous loop that will create the chair. Furthermore, more loops can follow with different profiles to create an extendable seat that can go from chair to bench to stool. RAZME Jewelry Design

Razme is a year long project that consists of bundle of Arabic words sketched daily, one word a day for 365 days. The outcomes published were a result of the first intuitive unrefined sketch. The purpose of this project was to discover and push the boundaries of the Arabic script, and attempting to discover new letter-forms. It later matured from two-dimensional words into three-dimensional objects to be worn as jewelery. They are applied as pendants, statement rings, and cuff bracelets. ROTRING Pencils and Pens

Founded in 1928 and influenced by the Bauhaus movement, rOtring has specialized in providing the very best technical pencils and pens for everyone from illustrators to draftsman. Over the decades, the company’s innovation and design helped fuel a countless number of creators in their process. In the 1950s, rOtring’s “rapidograph” technical pen became the standard amongst engineers, architects and even illustrators. They remain the standard in “analog” work today. In the 80’s, rOtring’s original 600 & 800 mechanical pencils innovated with their non-rolling full-metal hexagonal barrel body that brought a new level of control. Now, rOtring takes the base 800 pencil and modernizes it for today’s analog and digital world. THE FARM Branding and Identity Design

At The Farm, we’re thinkers, creators, and branders. We believe in simplicity, innovation, and smiling through the hardest projects. We love head scratching and brainstorming, while sitting in our garden. Brand building makes us happy, from the strategy to the design. From our office, we travel the world over, with clients across continents. Our “core philosophy” is not to use such big terms as “core philosophy”. We like to stay simple yet progressive, straight forward yet magical. We do that by going back to basics, getting to the core of a product and letting the purity and rawness of it all run free. Every project is an adventure that takes us on a journey within the heart of a brand, be it young or old, crazy or corporate, established or blossoming. We are especially proud of how serious we are, all the while never taking ourselves too seriously. APERITIVO AT THE FARM It’s our 3rd birthday party, and we’re throwing a party. Come for drinks, tunes, and inspiration. Meet the farmers, get lost in our books, discover cool projects, or just enjoy a drink in our garden. Bring your ideas and smiles.

THE STUDY Product Design

tamarabarrage@gmail.com vrouyr@gmail.com lea.kirdikian@gmail.com

The Study is a collaboration aimed at experimental design and material research, comprised of 3 designers; Tamara Barrage, Vrouyr Joubanian, and Lea Kirdikian. "Experiment 1" will be launched during Beirut Design Week, as the byproduct of their first collaborative project. Using resin as a constant constituent and an assortment of different residual elements as well as industrial substances as variables, "experiment 1" is the result of such unconventional composites. By designing complimentary mechanical systems, their design process brings forth unexpected outcomes in a series of furniture items. This type of production method creates textures that are unpredictable as the process they undergo have consequentially random discrepancies and permutations as they are shaped, molded, and finalized. Hence making no two surfaces alike. Emphasizing on the role of production method in the product's outcome and appearance as well as on the arbitrary nature of hybrid materials, "experiment 1" showcases design through a window of hazard and chance. WASTE Up-Cycling

vit-e is a Beirut based branding & digital creative agency founded in 2000 by Nathalie Fallaha. A team of multi-talented individuals focused on building brands through the power of visual communication. All of us, designers, illustrators, project managers, bring something different to the table. We believe that everyone has a passion. And this enthusiasm translates into our work. As a creative ‘think’ and ‘do’ tank we bring out ingenuity into all that we do and it is how we do it that makes us different. At the heart of this studio is communication. Visual communication. We create, elevate and reinvigorate brands. We are a mixed bunch of dreamers, designers and developers and together we spend our time creating ideas that we channel through different touch-points. vit-e offers a powerful mix of industry experience and works with clients of different sizes and types, from startups to grown up brands. We have the experience and knowledge of a big creative agency combined with the personal touch of a boutique agency. WONDEREIGHT Branding and Interactive Design

During Beirut Design Week, WonderEight, Global Branding and Interactive Agency, will perform a series of creative interventions, around the streets of Mar Mikhael, aiming to open the eyes of the public to how design can change the way we see things around us. Knowing that a designer’s relationship with visual communication is not restricted to one form of expression, designers can sometimes find inspiration in the glitches of the world surrounding us, using the city as their own canvas. So on the occasion of Beirut Design Week, WonderEight invites Mar Mikhael’s curious pedestrians to discover these creative street crafts here and there, like an egg hunt. URBAN INTERVENTIONS IN MAR MIKHAEL Look for the BDW info tags as most of these interventions are small and discrete. WonderEight will also hold open doors days to the public during all Beirut Design Week. You’re invited to drop by, check out the studios, chat with the team, and discover the new pop art installation in the gallery window.

This puzzle-like plan allows for maximum flexibility; spaces can contract or grow as relationships to the skeleton, site and neighbors evolve.

Artisan Initiative addresses the threat arising in the craftsmanship community in Bourj Hammoud and its surroundings, due to cheap imports, the desire for European produced luxury goods, and regional instability, by supporting ateliers and artisans.

CRAFTSMEN WORKSHOP TOUR Fashion and design students will participate in workshops that will take place in different ateliers in and around Bourj Hammoud. The public will go on a tour to discover the different types of craftsmanship as well witness the interaction between the students, designers and the craftsmen.
