QUOTES

FROM PARTICIPANTS AND GUESTS

“5 minutes | Switch | 5 minutes | Switch | 5 minutes | Switch | 5 minutes | Switch | 5 minutes | Switch | 5 minutes | Switch | 5 minutes | Switch | 5 minutes | Switch”

ZUMRA “Loved the vibe!”

PLATFORM 39 “Our participation in this year’s Design Week proved very fruitful. Our aim was to push collaboration and to expose new talent, and we succeeded, alongside various partners and supporters, in bringing 20 up-and-coming designers together to achieve that goal. AIGA Middle East is working on uniting the design community under a common platform, and Beirut Design Week is serving as a major catalyst and valuable resource for that. This is a recipe for success that we aim to continue investing in in the years to come.”

AIGA

Mo Saad—President, AIGA Middle East “Beirut Design Week is an important platform that helps nurture a badly needed culture of design and designers in Beirut”

LAU

“ Beirut Design Week is becoming more and more celebrated and welcomed not only by the local and regional designers and artists but also by the general public who was more than ever present this year and appreciative of all the creativity being offered and it’s for that reason that WonderEight chose to do creative interventions in the streets of one of the most hipster areas in Beirut to let the wanderers discover and enjoy art that is not pretentious and not confined in one place. And thanks to our friends at Tastykitchens who offered us a space to do a special intervention, we translated a graphical poster into a three dimensional representation of it, the door was open and the public enjoyed it as it was intended.”

WONDEREIGHT “ The Pop-Up Tattoo Shop at 6:05®: They say you’re never really naked if you’re wearing ink They say you’re never really naked if you’re wearing ink”

6:05 Colleen’s workshop was very engaging and fun! She introduced the basics of game design and helped us in groups create our games to tackle social problems. The workshop really highlighted the importance of addressing social issues in non-traditional ways that could potentially engage and mobilize the community differently.

JUNE BEIRUT SOUKS & SAIFI VILLAGE

If there had ever been any question that BDW2015 was going to be a smash hit, the Opening Ceremony in Beirut Souks laid those doubts to rest and made Beirut—at least for that first week of June—the undisputed epicenter of MENA design. Not only did exhibitions like The Makers and Based in Beirut turn the spotlight on the emerging “maker” movement in Lebanon as well newcomers and young designers, but a select group of local entrepreneurs launched crowdfunding campaigns and courted donors using skills they gleaned from the MENA DRC and Hevos’s Disrupt/ Design/ initiative. Yet Beirut Design Week is anything but a local affair. International participants also found a platform, with the Dutch and Finnish exhibitions drawing large crowds with their forward-thinking and minimalistic designed goods. On top of it all, large-scale urban interventions—a mirrored façade by Badih & Kantar Architects and an urban projection by Minus 5 Architects and Studio Mr. White— kept attention on the importance of design for the people. Rolling out the red carpet for BDW2015 attendees for open studios and exhibitions on opening night were architecture firm TheOtherDada, jewelers L’atelier Nawbar, SV Gallery with a solo exhibition by Berge Panossian, and Starch. Lebanese designers found space at the “One Piece for the Trunk” exhibition, while established interior design firm Vick Vanlian hosted its Rayxander exhibition, Tajjaliya Art Gallery showed numerous pieces, and Johnny Farah & ALBA put on an exhibition of student-made bags, belts, and accessories. Other events included Turning Point’s “Who Wants a Mommy with a Mustache” at Planet Discovery, Bang & Olufsen’s 90th anniversary, a celebration of a decade of design by Nada Debs, Bokja’s block party, the “fil en aiguille” showcase by Randa Tabbah, Purrl’s launch of a new collection, a sale by fashion designer Dina Jsr, “The Living Megasystem” by 109 Architects, and a showcase of Hawini’s furniture design at “Maison Rabih Kayrouz”. Workshops hosted at MENA DRC and taught by Astrid Hauton and Hala A. Malak engaged crucial ideas about innovation and design criticism respectively. Meanwhile, White sur White hosted a workshop on prototyping and product design, while the Azza Fahmy Design Studio ran courses on jewelry design. Across town, the Artisan Initiative ran another installment of its popular Craftsmen Workshop Tour in Bourj Hammoud. Capping off the day with live music, sweets and savory treats, as well as a much-deserved nightcap or two, participants turned out in droves for the Saifi Village welcome party by Badih & Kantar Architects.

JUNE GEMMAYZE & SURSOCK

EXHIBITIONS & OPEN STUDIOS GEMMAYZE & SURSOCK

If BDW2015 day No. 1 set a high bar, day No. 2 proved the best was yet to come. A panel of international design superstars, upstarts, and industry disrupters drew a solid crowd to the Downtown Cinemacity for the BDW2015 International Conference on the value of design in technology, business, and social impact. Although the design exhibitions kept their doors open (and continued to draw patrons for the rest of the week) in Beirut Souks, day No. 2 took a turn toward the east: Gemmayze and Sursock.

BDW2015 attendees found exhibitions and open studios in abundance, including: “25 Years of Juicy Salif” by Philippe Starck at Sel & Poivre, Serge Nalbandian’s new collection of handmade carpets, the interactive installation “Ceci n’est pan un Tapis” by Hadi Maktabi, and the launch of a new collection by jeweler Nada Zeineh. Sarah’s Bag debuted a new collection alongside the exhibition “Woman Rising,” Kahwet Leila unveiled a cabbagebased organic installation, C by Cynthia launched a collection of bags, and At East opened its studio for an exhibition. Festivities continued with displays of leather goods and samples by Sacoche, the open studio at Atelier S/Z, a bash by alternative event planner Tarte aux Poires, Tarek el Kassouf’s “Unfolding the Cube” and chair design Aiga Middle East & B Design at 392Rmeil393. No Brand threw open the doors of its chic blue house space, while Sandra Macaron exhibited “DD” at Mayrig Garden, Creations by WF opened its studio for a soiree, and Azza Fahmy exhibited jewelry at Dehab. Not all the action came at open spaces and exhibitions, of course. Beer lovers, the nostalgic, and urban revivalists all turned out for Mina 23’s screening of the film Reviving Forgotten Spaces at the now-defunct Brasserie du Levant in Mar Mikhael. Meantime, presentations at Public Works opened topics as diverse as urbanism and social campaigning. Ideo Parfumeurs gave attendees a chance to let their olfactory ambitions run wild with its scentcreation experience, and Villa Linda hosted the Lebelik Workshop for Kids. Down in Dora at the MENA DRC, Linksrechts Service Design opened a dialogue with its workshop Design Thinking Days.

JUNE ACHRAFIEH

EXHIBITIONS & OPEN STUDIOS ACHRAFIEH

Beirut Design Week day No. 3 zeroed-in on Achrafieh. Headlining the day were exhibitions and open studios that showed the full spectrum of design, from a multisensory interpretation of indoor/outdoor living to tattoo artistry. Meanwhile, the design exhibitions and the International Conference marched on, with the speakers engaging the audience and each other in a panel discussion on critical design principles. Studios, exhibitions, and launches included “In Harmony” by Ghassan Salameh, 21DB, and Green Studios at Villa Paradiso, “Stories, Inside and Out” by Made For Brands, the store opening of La Rose de Sim, the exhibition of objects by Lebanese designers at “Over the Counter,” and Liza’s long-running “Walls Can be Fun” initiative. Crowds turned out to get a closer look at new lines of jewelry by Henry Dakak Jr. as well as Rami Boutros at Khawatem. Meantime, Vanessa Adeeko launched the “Phoenicia” collection at La Posta, Cork Living displayed its curated collection of Scandinavian-inspired furniture, 6:05 hosted a Pop-Up Tattoo Shop, and Jan Kath debuted the “Space-Crafted Collection” at Iwan Maktabi. Silly Spoon kept things rolling with “Table Tales,” while Decale opened its studio space, as did the Arab Center for Architecture. Jeweler Patrizia launched a line of rings, while White sur White hosted “From Lebanon to IED Young Creatives.” As Beirut Design Week spread further out into the city, attendees found the chance to see even more of the city through the Pop On! Pop Off! Tour by Rana Salam. Day No. 3 saw the workshops kick into high gear, too. IBM’s Doug Powell led an engaging design thinking workshop at MENA DRC, and Caustic Studios reviewed student portfolios and discussed the industry as a whole. White sur White continued to be a hot post, hosting a workshop on product photography, while JCI Beirut led a session on brand innovation at BDD. Many BDW2015 attendees took the chance to digest what they learned in workshops while they did a bit of degustation of a more literal kind at a dinner hosted by Platform 39.

JUNE MAR MIKHAEL & KARANTINA

EXHIBITIONS & OPEN STUDIOS MAR MIKHAEL & KARANTINA

If Thursday was a slow day for Beirut Design Week in terms of open spaces, that lull gave participants and attendees alike just the respite they would need going into Friday. A full slate of open studios proved that even though the week was winding down, it wouldn’t end without some fireworks. Opens studios, exhibitions, and launches included the CNC fabrication atelier DAMJ, “Melting Point: A Visual Narrative” at the marketing firm Joe Fish, Kite Creative’s’ open studio, and “L’envers du Décors” by Cynthia Raffoul. Madame Reve kept things rolling with its “Drawer Day,” as did Vanina’s “Behind the Scenes,” and the open houses at architect Karim Bekdache, jeweler Ralph Masri, and innovative lighting designer Ghassan Salameh. Jewelry concept store Rosa Maria rang in its fourth anniversary, while product designer Liwan launched “Sit In,” furniture designer Maria Halios opened the doors of its studio, and Junkyard Rooftop hosted the exhibition “Urban Fusion.” Nizar Sabbagh Architects exhibited private residences, Simon Electric opened its studio space, as did custom motorcycle designers Beirut Café Racers. Design house Schizzo launched “Harur,” and fashion designers Second Street & Creative Space Beirut exhibited a new collection, as did Karim Chaya at Art Factum. Art and design space Smogallery launched its “Revenge,” ID Beirut put on an interactive exhibition, up-cycling firm Waste opened its studio, and “On Dalieh” by the Daliah Campaign drew crowds at Mansion. Despite the platter of open spaces and exhibitions, workshops and other events remained an important part of the day. Memory Lane hosted a drawing competition by rOtring, and branding firm WonderEight staged an urban intervention to change the way we see the city around us. In terms of workshops, Danah Abdulla led a session at MENA DRC, while creative boutique bobolink hosted a workshop on campaigning, and 2B Design tackled restoration and patina. RapidManufactory, meanwhile, delved into drafting and 3D printing technology.

BOURJ HAMMOUD, JISR EL WATI & BEYOND

The old line by T.S. Eliot has it that the world ends “not with a bang but a whimper”—not so with Beirut Design Week! The Monot Street Book Fair by Recto Verso and the Beirut Art Center’s kid’s exhibition may have been among the only open spaces for the last full day of BDW2015, but the action was far from over. Razan Alsalah led attendees on a stereographic tour of old Beirut with TimeBox, and multiple workshops kept attendees busy. Colleen Macklin led a session on video game design at ALBA, while the Lebanese Architecture Club and Wood& also ran workshops covering sketching and design and personalization. Meantime, the issue-oriented nonprofit JCI Beirut ran a session on creativity. Saturday’s unmissable big bang, however, was the BDW/D3 closing party at The Yacht Club, where sound designer Julian Maier-Hauff headlined an uninterrupted live set that lasted into the wee hours of the morning. Tying off BDW2015 on Sunday were a few events scattered across the city. The Dalieh Campaign arranged a walking tour, and lighting designer Debbas hosted a handful of European designers. Dawawine, meanwhile, screened three films: Maker, Microtopia, and Tadao Ando.
