INTRODUCTION

Beirut Design Week 2013: Creative, Innovative & Collaborative From 24 to 30 June, Beirut Design Week 2013 will be held across Beirut City, featuring exhibitions, conferences, workshops and open studios showcasing the work of local and international designers operating within Lebanon. This year’s event will focus on creative economies, intercultural exchange, design education and design entrepreneurship. Beirut Design Week is organized by the MENA Design Research Center, an organization cofounded by Doreen Toutikan and Maya Karanouh and incubated by TAGbrands, a regional branding and design agency. The Center is focused on promoting a diverse understanding of design through the implementation of design research and collaborative multidisciplinary projects in the region. ‘Last year, Beirut Design Week 2012 was a milestone for the Lebanese design entrepreneurial community. Its success has allowed us to establish a unique platform for designers of all fields in Lebanon,’ explained Ms Karanouh. ‘By focusing this year on Creative Economies we are furthering our cause to identify Beirut the official Design Capital of the MENA region’. Ms Toutikan believes that the event offers a much more interactive experience than traditional trade shows. ‘Beirut Design Week is different from a fair or one-off event because it encourages people to explore with a map and a route showcasing the creative talent in our city, while engaging with designers through workshops, talks and open studios.’ ‘We will also be providing the opportunity to introduce the public to all the new designers breaking through in the local scene, starting off with the Newcomer’s Exhibition as our opening event in Atelier NS in Mar Mikhael on June 24,’ she added. With a series of exhibitions, talks, workshops, open studios and international guests, Beirut Design Week will serve as a platform of cultural exchange between the city and the rest of the world. This year the event has also been organized in such a way that each day will be dedicated to a certain part of the city, with a program allowing the audience to explore every area of the city without missing out on any of the events. Nada Debs, Chair of the Beirut Design Week Committee, explained that hosting a design week in Lebanon can have a longstanding impact of the city and the country. ‘As well as supporting grass roots industries and giving exposure to the talented young designers working in Beirut, we have also seen a collaborative crossover from larger companies looking to support and work alongside the Beirut design community,’ she said.

‘Design can be used solve many issues which face our society today and by helping to develop our design scene and encourage interaction and cross-collaboration with other industries we can find real and innovative solutions to improve life for our population,’ adds Doreen. One of the organisations partnering with Beirut Design Week 2013 includes the Lebanese American University, who are hosting the Beirut Design Week main conference on June 29. Randa Abdel Baki, Chair of Graphic Design Department at LAU said they were ‘proud to be hosting the conference and other events at the university’. ‘Working with Beirut Design Week enables our students to experience our local design scene and interact with successful, working designers in our city. The conference will involve a selection of regional and international designers and educators discussing supporting and developing our design scene and how to use our current design talent to solve issues facing our country today, ’ explains Maya. Committee members for the conference include Nada Debs, Rana Salam, Nicolas Bellavance-Lecompte, Nada Zeineh, Johnny Farah, Sarah Beydoun, Tala Hajjar, Dina Kamal, Cyril Najjar, Wyssem Nochi, Marc Baroud, Karim Chaaya, Ayssar Arida, Hani Asfour, Sarah Hermez, Lara Balaa and Rosy Abouross. Already launched to the public, the Beirut Design Week Poster Competition is asking graphic designers and creatives to design a poster that envisions Beirut in the year 2090, exploring possibilities for the city’s future to show the public what they imagine their city to look like in 77 years. A jury of prominent Lebanese graphic designers including Rana Salam, Hani Asfour, Jimmy Francis, Rami Obeid and other experts will evaluate the entries and an exhibition of the posters will take place in Platform 39, a new exhibition space in Ashrafieh.

MENA DESIGN RESEARCH CENTER The MENA Design Research Center is a non-profit organization based in Beirut, Lebanon. Founded by Doreen Toutikian and Maya Karanouh in 2010, it soon developed from being a company CSR and ThinkTank to one the region’s most progressive design institutions. In 2012, the center initiated and organized the first Beirut Design Week, which set a new standard for Beirut as the Design Capital of the Middle East & North Africa. The creative process involved in problem solving -whether in communications, products, systems or services- could be applied to a varied scale of disciplines and fields. The MENA Design Research Center promotes this diverse understanding of design thinking through the implementation of design research and collaborative multidisciplinary projects in the region.

The MENA Design Research Center is highly involved with social initiatives that concern the Arab World and contributes to a variety of social issues by developing innovative tools through design thinking and co-creation. The center is also closely linked to design education in order to encourage and guide the participation of designers in the non-commercial, public, and non-profit domains. The MENA Design Research Center is incubated by TAGbrands, a regional branding consultancy in downtown Beirut.

THE FOUNDERS

Doreen Toutikian Director, MENA Design Research Center Organizer of Beirut Design Week Doreen Toutikian is an interdisciplinary designer, educator and a social entrepreuneur. After years of design studies in Cologne and Glasgow, she returned to Beirut to pursue her career in building a collective design community. She believes that the key to all successful design is collaboration. This belief has inspired her to initiate various projects in order to encourage multidisciplinary teamwork for social innovation. Such projects include ‘Public Design Intervention: Beirut’ and DESMEEM. In 2010, she co-founded the MENA Design Research Center. She is currently the Director of the Center, organizer of Beirut Design Week, and a teacher at the Lebanese American University in Beirut.

Maya Karanouh CEO TAGBRANDS Chairperson, MENA Design Research Center Organizer of Beirut Design Week In the past decade Maya Karanouh has been an active entrepreneur, founding several companies and being a leading member of the regional creative sector. Maya is currently the CEO at TAGbrands, a branding agency that is proud to have amongst its regional client base: Bank Audi, Doha Bank, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Ghandour, Bonjus, Patchi, L’Oreal and Taanayel. As Maya is a strong believer in design and innovation she decided to co-found and incubate the MENA Design Research Center in 2010, as the CSR branch of TAGbrands www.tagbrandsglobal.com

The Beirut Design Week 2013 Conference brings together for the first time in the region, designers and architects from the UK, Denmark, USA, France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Lebanon to come together and discuss Design in all its broadness.

Already City X from San Francisco, have started training children between 8 to 10 years old with this great technology, helping them to reshape their cities and the fictional characters that inhabit them.

As organizers ofBDW & the Conference, MENA Design Research Center focuses on design for social impact. Therefore, it is a great honor to have the Director of Index, an international award dedicated to the cause with us. Moreover, T+HUIS also a design for social impact studio from the Netherlands, have inspired us with their community building projects for years. The understanding of the role of design in civic society as well as community, is in fact a specialty of Ruedi Baur from the Master Program in Geneva. But researching the core dynamics of community which is built on TRUST, has been the month-long project of Jeremy Beaudry and his international Master of Industrial Design students from the Philadelphia University of the Arts.

Michael Anastassiades For years Michael has produced his work in very limited quantities as editions of quality crafted pieces and small runs. In 2007 he set up a company to increase the availability of his objects. He traveled around the world and located small family run workshops to fabricate his pieces. The workshops were selected for their unique manufacturing skills and tradition in the use of materials. The first collection of pieces to be introduced follow two years of meticulous preparation. It combines fine detailing with honestly expressed materials reinforcing the elegant simplicity of the designs. All the products are hand made in unlimited editions. The glass work is free blown, the stone work is hand carved, and the metal finishes are bespoke. Archipelago Town-lines: an app proposing a new urban growth model gleaned from an architect’s traveling notes Three “archipelago-towns”—Berlin, Beirut, Venice— reveal their hidden urban geometry, their rites and culture, and the possible future of urban growth and de-growth. A work by Conrad-Bercah, architect. Between 2009 and 2011 the state-less architect Conrad-Bercah lived in three different symbolic cities— Berlin, Beirut, Venice—analyzing and studying their less evident urban and social qualities. ‘Juxtaposing the hidden DNAs of these conglomerations,’ states Conrad-Bercah, ‘I have attempted to design a new theory to address both urban growth and degrowth. The theory is based on the figure of the archipelago, which, like Rome for Goethe, Paris for Walter Benjamin, or Venice for Ruskin, becomes a place-non-place in which the geometric lines of a truly sustainable—or possible—urban life may be perceived.’ ‘The difference between tourist and traveler,’ wrote Paul Bowles in the Sheltering Sky, ‘is that the former

accepts his own civilization without question, while the latter compares it with the others, and rejects those elements he finds not to his liking.’ Archipelago Town-lines is the result of a similar mind frame. Conrad-Bercah’s traveling notes (videos, interviews, interactive maps, diagrams, surveys) design a new urban geography that allows the ‘reader’ the freedom to create their own temporal and cultural connections traveling between the past and future of their own cities. This approach is reflected in the app’s last section, in which a growing number of video reviews by prominent architects, urban designers, journalists, historians, teachers, and cultural commentators suggest different readings and imaginary paths stimulated by Archipelago Town-lines. Archipelago Town-lines has been released in English as an app for the ipad. It will be available for Amazon Kindle Fire and all tablets operating on an Android platform in May 2013.

Conrad-Bercah is an irregular journalist/blogger for LINKiesta and an architectural critic for prominent magazines of the specialized press, including Abitare, Abitare Bulgaria, Compasses, Domus, The Plan. Conrad-Bercah has a mixed background in all things architectural. After graduating from the Politecnico di Torino (1992), he apprenticed at the offices of Aldo Rossi and Ignazio Gardella in Milan before continuing his postgraduate education at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (1996) and working at Pei Cobb Freed in New York City. He has since returned to Harvard as an instructor (1996), fellow (1997–2000), and design critic (2008–2009). In the fall of 2013 he will serve as lecturer at the MIT Center for Advanced Urbanism.

Ayssar Arida is a practicing urbatect, writer, educator and entrepreneur. His award-winning work ranges from digital interface design to large-scale city planning and strategy. Ayssar wrote the influential book Quantum City, which looks at the city as a field of interaction between physical, emotional, natural, and digital events bridged by individual memories and collective consciousness.

With an architectural and landscape planning background, Imad Gemayel has been a practitioner since mid-90s and recently an advisor at the Academie Libanaise des Beaux Arts. His practice established late 2004 became a solid partner of internationally reputable firms from the UK, USA, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal on projects in Lebanon and across the Middle East.

As one of the group Manuel Castells calls “some of the brightest urban minds of today”, he coauthored New Urbanism and Beyond: Designing Cities for the Future.

Imad Gemayel’s interest and research in sustainability extend beyond green buildings and derive their inspiration from the roots, to touch on social issues, ethical lifestyle, sustainable management and the preservation of biodiversity…

Guillaume Crédoz 3D printing in architecture and design conception process A quick presentation of additive manufacturing concept and the main technologies will introduce the lecture. Computer assisted conception softwares and their users have developped to a certain maturity, but the gap with physical world is still present and often a death sanction to designs. 3D printing and rapid manufacturing have created gateways that open some links between digital and analog worlds giving designers new perspectives of output. Several examples will show the impacts of integration of 3D printing within the conception process now that those technologies are going towards main stream.

Jeremy Beaudry

Jeremy Beaudry has worked in and between the disciplines of art, design, and education for over 15 years. With a focus on socially-engaged art and design, he has lectured and publicly presented projects in national and international venues, including SPACES in Cleveland, the 2013 Hidden City Festival in Philadelphia, ISEA2009 in Belfast, Dutch Art Institute, and Åbo Akademi University in Finland.

2006, he has been a founding member of The Think Tank that has yet to be named, an organization that initiates research, conversations, and actions that explore contemporary sociopolitical issues. Over the past several years he has worked as a design consultant with the Action Mill, a strategic design studio. He is a professor of design and Director of the Master of Industrial Design Program at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

In 2008 he was artist-in-residence at Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum in Egypt as a part of the U.S. Department of State Cultural Envoy program. In 2009-10, he co-curated Manifesta 8, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art in Murcia, Spain. Since

With the increasing complexity of social, technological, and ecological challenges, design — as a process and a way of thinking — has subsequently expanded its focus to become a leading agent of social transformation and innovation. Designers have at their disposal a number of powerful tools and methods which give them a unique ability to initiate meaningful change in communities, organizations, and businesses. But how do these design tools and methods translate across cultural, linguistic, and geographical lines? And how do the underlying assumptions and values embedded within these practices sit within in other cultural contexts?

Jason is a contemporary artist & fashion academic working in the UK & South East Asia. His practice encompasses experimental textiles, precious gems, memory & emotional response. When teaching fashion & textiles, his greatest concern is to allow students to be who they really are- not who they would like to be. A lesson easily taught, but not so easily learned.

For a process to be thoughtful it must have truth on every level down to internal construction & the smallest detail. This makes each piece laborious & time consuming to make- yet the internal world must be reported in an accurate way.

Since 2009 Jason has made a gradual transition from fashion designer to artist. Whilst his work continues to use familiar references, the context has shifted in a subtle and sometimes dark way.

Prior to this shift, Jason worked with a number of companies as well as private clients to develop bespoke garments. These are often signature pieces in a client’s wardrobe & range from tailoring to body sculpture. Few have a public face; those who do are celebrated British artists Tracey Emin & Cerith Wyn Evans.

When Does Fashion + Education = Glamour? A Discussion by Jason Steel Fashion design is the Cinderella of the creative arts. In no other discipline are students expected to research, design, illustrate & cut garments that fit the body in an aesthetically pleasing way. Fashion is a complex language that exists on myriad levels; it is therefore essential to avoid the many pitfalls when writing a course, especially when the Internet is saturated with images from catwalks, sidewalks & celebrity events from around the globe. Never before have images been so widely available, yet these must not be confused with the essential skills students need to learn.

Sarah has been working as a strategist and consultant in the Creative Industries since 2001. Whilst she comes from a strategic marketing background she is now focused on improving the financial sustainability of the businesses she works with. This is a broad remit which can encompass working with founders on their vision for the business’s growth, building the case for external investment, improving business processes and honing the marketing and communications strategy.

To do this Sarah has to build a nuanced understanding of the differences between the various local and international markets and supply chains that her clients operate in. For the last two to three years Sarah has focused her attention on the Middle East in order to better understand the similarities and differences to the structures that prevail in Europe and N. America

Fashion entrepreneurship in the Middle East opportunities and challenges The market and supply chain in the ME and Levant regions are noticeably different to those that operate in Western EU and North America. Ruedi Baur Ruedi Baur, designer, born in 1956 in Paris, spent his childhood in France, then trained as a graphic designer with Michael Baviera in Switzerland, obtaining his diploma in graphic design in 1979 at the Schule für Gestaltung in Zurich. Having created the Bbv studio in Lyon in 1983, in 1989 he cofounded the interdisciplinary network Intégral Concept and has since directed the Intégral Ruedi Baur Studios in Paris and Zurich. He has taught on a regular basis since 1987. From 1989 to 1996 he coordinated the design department at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. In 1995 he was appointed as lecturer at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, running its education board from 1997 to 2000. From 2004 to 2011 he lead the Research Institute Design2context at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste.

Civic design for a civic city

“Civic Design” as postgraduate program is focused on the question of design as qualification criteria of civic space. It unifies different disciplines as architects, urban designers, designers, graphic designers, sociologists and politicians and is lead by Ruedi Baur and Vera Baur-Kockot.

In the second edition the CAS proposes two topics, “Hyperproximity. Space and design in local democracy” or “Multilingual typography and public space”, the students and researchers follow and intensify one of the topics during a year through seminars and workshops per topic abroad.

Currently he teaches „Information and Environment“ at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He is also the Coordinator of the CAS Civic-City/Civic-Design program at HEAD Geneva (Geneva Univerity of Art & Design), as well as that of the Institut Heterotopia at the Folkwang University of Essen. The University of Laval in Quebec, awarded Bauer an honorary doctorate in 2007. A member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (Agi) since 1992, he participates in many workshops and judging panels, gives regular lectures, and his works are published in various countries and presented at various exhibitions.

We are invisible machines that generate systems.” V.M.F. Born in Milan in 1963, Valerio Maria Ferrari since was a student at the Politecnico in Milan expanded his design borders, from architecture to stage design, to art installations. His multidisciplinary experiences were not sporadic incursions (for some years he was an assistant of Piero Faggioni for stage design and the direction of operas), but the opening of parallel paths, always within the design sector. His studio VMCF ATELIER-Virtual Machine Concept Facilities, founded in 2003, grew out of the many-sided professional biography which distinguishes him. For several years, Ferrari has also been active in philosophy (with aesthetics seminars held at the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico in Milan, under the direction of Stefano Zecchi) and between

1990 and ‘93 he worked with the painter and architect Roberto Sebastian Matta (1911-2002), notably on the project Verbo America - Cultural Centre in Santiago, Chile. Libby Falck is a writer, media artist, and filmmaker based in San Francisco. Libby’s specialties include film, interactive media, and UX design. Libby has also worked in education teaching filmmaking, video game design, 3D modeling, and graphic design to children ages 8-18. She is thrilled to be combining all of these passions as the Director of the City X Project.

Brett is an entrepreneur, adventurer, and instigator, on a mission to find new ways to explore, connect, and share the world. He has worked in educational development with organizations throughout the US, Transylvania, Panama, Haiti, Kenya, and in nearly a dozen cities across Russia. Brett is the Chief Instigator at IDEAco (the Coalition for Innovative Development, Education, and Action).

Dennis Meulenbroeks is the founder and director of the T+HUIS. As a social entrepreneur with an Industrial Design background, he continues to research and develop new approaches and strategies for design in the social field.

Aike Heuvelink graduated from the bachelor program at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Working at the T+HUIS for three years she understands what value design can bring in a multidisciplinary context.

Design is our way of working, and allows us to produce innovative solutions that are from a user point of view and co-created. With over 6 years experience, the T+HUIS is growing to become a leading design organization in the social field.

The T+HUIS is a design organization with a social heart. Our mission is to apply design thinking in the social field by researching and developing new approaches, strategies and systems for children and their neighbourhoods to realize their potential. Our social innovation is about creating possibilities, and design thinking encourages us to shape, implement, evaluate and develop this. After her graduation from ESAD de Reims, a pioneer in the education of innovative food design discipline, Magali Wehhrung ventured through her career as an interdisciplinary designer with a focus on food design.

Along with her partner Agathe Bouvachon, she founded Hopla, a design studio based in Paris. Hopla is a food design studio which focuses on food design, openings, creations and food imagery.

She creates thematic banquets, participates in collective exhibitions in France and in Europe and leads educational culinary workshops in Ile-deFrance where she lives and works.

Since 2013, Magali is leading the studio alone, sometimes in collaboration with graphic designers or artists.

What Exactly is Food Design? The history of food design and its relationship with different design disciplines and fields is a recent one. From industrial designers making modular chocolate bars to bluetooth galettes, the range and combinations are endless. Using manufacturing tools and techniques to create new food shapes is also a specialty of the trade. Packaging innovations from sustainable material as well as new experiences and interactions are all part of the food design world.

Bourj Hammoud is one of the cities where one of the largest clusters of factories, suppliers and artisans can be found. Setting up the Tasché atelier in Bourj Hammoud back in 2009 enabled me to explore and locate several vendors and establishments and I would love to share my professional knowledge with those who are already in the design/industrial sector as well as those who are planning to set up their own creative label.

Khaled El Mays is a Lebanese designer and visual artist based in Beirut, his works always investigates form as a main drive for his objects, let alone the abundant use of colors that end up being a defining edge of his explorations.

OUR DAILY BREAD Night Screening The film depicts how modern food production companies employ technology to maximize efficiency, consumer safety and profit. It consists mainly of actual working situations without voice-over narration or interviews as the director tries to let viewers form their own opinion on the subject.[1] The names of the companies where the footage was filmed are purposely not shown. The director’s goal is to provide a realistic view on the internal workings of multiple food production companies in our modern society.

garden clay CERAMICS EXHIBITION Souraya Haddad is a former architect and landscape designer. She learned ceramic crafts in Bon-Secours School, Canada. After living in Istanbul, where she was running her ceramic workshop and giving Qi-Gong lessons, she now has a ceramic workshop at theBAKERY in Mar-Mikhayel, Beirut. She is building up a second workshop in the organic plantating field she is cultivating in the mountains of Baskinta where she intends to develop gas and wood fired ceramics. Guillaume Crédoz is an architect and sculptor. Thanks to a formation in Fine Arts, mixed with his experience in 3D modelling tools, he is creating objects that combine manual crafts and the latest rapid manufacturing technologies. He uses an old paper clay ceramic stamping technique onto 3Dprinted shapes derived from his design research.

ECO DESIGN When Zero Waste and Design Meet, a talk by Ziad Abichaker A showcase approach on how an industrial infrastructure was setup to tackle the thorny issue of garbage and how local technological research and development solved 100% of the garbage management issues. Ziad is a multi-disciplinary engineer who specializes in building Municipal Recycling Facilities on the communal level going against the trend of a central Mega recycling Plant. Recently, Ziad and his engineering team, after four years of research, developed a new technology which transforms plastic bags into solid plastic panels, dubbed ECO-BOARD, used in the outdoors to replace wooden and steel panels.

FRENCH POLISHING HHD by Henry Dakak Jr. HHD by Henry Dakak Jr. French polishing is a very old technique known for being one of the best finish for fine furniture. It is unpractical for mass furniture production due to the labor intensive process of application. This technique is one of HHD’s signatures. Photography Collaboration Launch WITH Johnny Farah & Joe Kesrouani

In this absorbing documentary, filmmaker Aaron Rose explores the world of a group of underground artists who began influencing areas from fashion and film to music and pop culture in the early 1990s.

As a follow up of last year’s Beirut Design Week, Johnny Farah and Joe Kesrouani are showcasing the photographs taken as part of the interactive Bag[TALKS] project. The project was a whimsical take on freedom of social behavior where participants enjoyed being masked and anonymous behind Kesrouani’s lens.

With outsider art elements such as graffiti, skateboarding and street music, these mavericks redefined creativity. Interviews with Shepard Fairey, Margaret Kilgallen, Barry McGee, Jo Jackson and others shed light on this remarkable movement.

The window of Johnny’s Saifi Village boutique will be transformed into a movie screen and will loop a short film made up of Joe Kesrouani’s bright and cheeky images.

All good design has a story to tell: from its earliest days of being a sketch to the day it becomes a final product. Two Lebanese studios, Kashida and a fish in sea, have joined forces to conduct a common workshop involving product design and branding. Both studios are opening their doors to participants to be part of a workshop where the goal is creating a branded product that will be donated to YAD by the Children’s Cancer Center of Lebanon (CCCL), the CCCL’s specialty boutique. Participants must have a background in a creative field: graphic design, product design, typography, interior design etc. We say this because each participant will ideally be developing a 2D product as well as a 3D one, both of which will be produced and sold at YAD by the CCCL. Examples of products that participants will develop: posters, postcards, greeting cards, wall decals, tote bags, vases, candles, photo frames, and finally a key display piece suitable for the interior space of the boutique. This first edition will focus on exploring sound and emotion in lettering through the creation of onomatopeia, which is traditionally associated to comics’ lettering. As part of this workshop, participants will be briefly introduced to lettering and onomatopeia before they proceed to working on their own pieces, which they will digitize on the second day.

MMM PlugIN & DESIGN PROCESS In a world of complexity where the parameters are in constant flux, designers strive to develop useful tools and processes that enable them to identify precisely and quickly where in the system they are thinking from. This will entail having methods that can assist and support them in approaching the task at hand from different angles. Accordingly they learn to move deliberately between the different levels of cognition and creativity. The MMM scale is a practical plug-in to the design process used to measure the intention and effort invested in the process and its outcome. The MMM scale stands for Mechanical, Mental and Mindful.

Participants will be invited to discover the art and process of creating jewelry pieces by handling materials and practicing handcraft techniques. This workshop will guide you through the process of creating a mood board to furnish a living room and will provide a fun, practical and pragmatic method to approaching a design project. During the workshop, participants will be divided into teams, each assisted by a facilitator from Sttch, and will go through the different steps of developing an interior space; brainstorming, research, concept creation, mood board collage and mockup. The Sttch team will follow up with you and send you a copy of the mood board you co-created. Sttch will then produce a limited-edition collection based on the concepts and ideas that emerge during the workshop. The products designed – furniture & soft furnishings – will each represent an aspect of your vision and interpretation of the ideal future of life on earth; from super human powers to idyllic relationships and life changing technologies. Biocouture is about using biomaterials, or grown materials, to design and create things, particularly fashion. In this workshop Ms Lee will provide participants with an intro to Biocouture and the materials they will be growing and working with. There will be a Demonstration of the fermentation method and further demonstrations of colouring techniques which involve fruits and vegetables. And finally the drying and moulding phase. As the process of growing the material takes some time, nothing will be produced or designed at the end of the workshop. Instead Suzanne will have a presentation showing the different applications she has used to broaden participant’s minds about how they can develop and use biomaterials in their own work. Participants will be introduced to a method for growing materials using nothing other than simple food-based ingredients and kitchen utensils. An interactive workshop where you will learn a recipe, method and discuss local alternatives and applications. This workshop is best suited for fashion designers and creatives interested in experimentation and organic material.

DIMA BOULAD Dima Boulad is a Lebanese designer with a passion for art, multimedia and positive social change. Dessine-moi un oeil is her personal artist project. It’s an exploratory project of automatic and thoughtless drawings spread across different surfaces. Her paintings have been exhibited in 2011 in 8mm space in Hamra, and her objects were part exhibited in 6:05 by Depeche mode store in April 2013. She collaborated with photographer Clémence Cottard on a photo-story published by The Carton magazine in their sprint 2013 issue.

Nadeen began her fashion design vocation at Esmod Beirut, a prestigious international school of fashion. She graduated with honours, completed a rigorous internship at Maison Rabih Keyrouz and worked under the direct supervision of Georges Chakra. A background in visual communications compelled her to give digital fashion workshops, which laid the foundations for her career. She began developing her original designs, with experimental cuts and new shapes at the core of her creations. Inspired by contrast and fascinated by the world, Nadeen leaves enough space for a twist of fate in the process that results in distinctive, innovative and feminine compositions.

Premonious Premonious is a trio of makers working as one to develop and produce the stuff of dreams. It was formed over the past few weeks as Nour Sobh, the engineer, dreamed of a bicycle for his daily transportation needs in Beirut, Lebanon. The bicycle - the most economic mean of transportation on earth and the least likely to get stuck in Beirut’s infamous traffic clogs - is a product of his love of two wheelers, engineering mechanisms and design.

Roula Dfouni works within a conventional material of black and white oxidized silver sterling with a touch of rough, uncut colored gemstones. Patil Tchilinguirian is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian visual artist. She graduated from the Lebanese American University with a BS in graphic design and a minor in fine arts in 2007. Later, she attended the Studio Arts program at Metàfora, in Barcelona. At the intersection of visual communication, social innovation and public art, she is a multidisciplinary designer and co-founder of the Tangent Space Art Collective.

“‫ | س‬SCENE - Beirut” is a brand coming out of the city, inspired by the urban life, the heritage and aspirations of the people of Beirut, still, aiming to respond to universal values and needs. “‫س‬ | SCENE - Beirut” brings modern design to everyday garments and objects. It gives them a local singular feel, often using calligraphy or illustrations in order to convey a different message or concept every time. Some of the elements used in her designs are part of our heritage and common culture such as: the Narguilé, the oriental coffee pot, the khayzaran chair or the shaffeh cup.

Through an aesthetic mélange of mixed media, installation art and street art, her work deals primarily with ideas of well-being and the seduction of public spaces, addressing contemporary societal and urban transformations.

ABI-HANNA DESIGN SPACE Abi-Hanna Design Space is a multi-disciplinary workplace shared by Sabah, Margherita and Basil Abi-Hanna, all three graduates of the Department of Architecture and Design at the American University of Beirut. Fresh out of AUB, Sabah moved to a soon-to-beindependent Kuwait during the early 60s to open an architectural firm, SSH, which has recently celebrated its 50 year anniversary. Currently headquartered in Kuwait, has subsidiaries in Oman, UAE, Qatar, and South Africa, SSH has grown to rank among the leading architectural and engineering firms worldwide. Upon obtaining her Graphic Design degree from AUB, Margherita worked locally, both within a team and as a freelance designer for 6 years before venturing into her graduate studies in Italy.

With a Master’s degree in Accessories Design from Domus Academy in Milan, she returned to Beirut to launch her own line of contemporary jewelry and accessories. Her work has been exhibited around the region as well as being shortlisted in a jewelry competition in Italy. Basil followed suit obtaining his Bachelor in Architecture from AUB 2 years ago and currently works as a consultant Architect. Alongside his career, he has developed an ardor for photography the basics of which he learnt at university. He continues to strengthen this skill through experience during his travels as well as undertaking various photoshoots including Margherita’s latest lookbook.

ATELIER S/Z Atelier S/Z is the brainchild of two artist, Sibylle Tamer and Ziad Abillama a daring couple in the artistic field who in the duality challenge each other’s creativity . In 1998 Sibylle Tamer Abillama obtained a degree in Fine Arts at ALBA Lebanon, and later on joined Parson’s school of design in NewYork city. She exhibited her masterpieces in New- York, Europe, Middle East and Lebanon. The many talented Lebanese artists has also extended her creativity to a special photo exhibition concept title “Colère” which is a wakeup call for the deteriorating life in this country, and to supposedly try to find a solution to the internal political problems in this Lebanon in an artistic way.

She selected her feelings from her thoughts before combining function; otherwise, it would have been block . She selected also her way of life to see the frustrations and problems of this ugly world that inspires her, and that she tries to transform through her work. After being an experimented architect specializing in the restoration of archaeological sites and historical monuments, Grace, finally decided to go back to her passion: fashion design and opens her experimental design laboratory atelierG in 2008. CAI LIGHT Founded by Christophe Hascoët, Annabel Kassar and Isabelle Rolland, Caï Light is dedicated to exploring light in all its possibilities. They have developed an expertise in lighting - lighting that shapes our nocturnal urban landscapes and our interior spaces by creating unique “light scenes”. Caï Light produces its own collection of objects - noted by the international press - and center pieces for retail and the hotel/leisure industries. Last year they presented their latest Collection in Milan. Their designs are driven by the belief that the play of shadow and light is one of the most effective means of transforming space, producing what they call “luminous atmospheres”. Actually, Caï Light is creating a singular and innovative installation between a media-facade and a luminous architectural modenature for the new Souks Entertainment Center in Beirut, Lebanon _ designing 4,844 prism-like shaped modules “Brilliants” equipped with LED, assembled and animated by videos especially conceived for the project : a unique venture in the Middle-East expected to be completed in 2013.

b As jewellery rapidly became Joanna’s passion, she angled her studies towards making it her career. After graduating in Jewellery Design from the famous Central St. Martin’s, Joanna was immediately picked up by Swarovski. Renowned for their support of young talent, Joanna was commissioned to design a piece for their 2012 trend forecasting book. Eager to advance and expand her knowledge of diamonds and precious gemstones, Joanna then enrolled in a gemology course at the prestigious GIA in London. Since qualifying as a gemologist, Joanna has launched her brand in the UK, Italy and Beirut, where she opened her flagship jewellery boutique at the beginning of December 2010 in Ashrafieh in which she stocks her own designs as well as other designers she finds all over the world.

DEHAB JEWELLERY GALLERY Dehab Jewellery Gallery was established in March 2012 to provide a permanent space for Lebanese and foreign jewellery designers.

Dehab launched several exhibitions last year, targeting different groups:

Simone Kosremelli, established architect, started designing her own jewellery and exhibiting them at various events. She came to realize that there is a need to provide a well-equipped permanent space for young aspiring jewellery designers, whether Lebanese or not, to showcase their work properly.

KAREN Chekerdjian After graduation from Milan’s prestigious Domus Academy in 1997 with a Masters in Product Design and Design Direction, Karen Chekerdjian worked in Italy for a number of years. In 2001, she returned to Beirut and opened Karen Chekerdjian Studio. Beginning as more of a conceptual think-tank, dedicated to exploring new ideas in design, the Studio has gradually become more focussed on production; furniture and everyday objects in small series, limited editions and made-to-order commissions. The Studio also takes on interior design projects. Karen Chekerdjian Store opened in 2010 in the up-and-coming Beirut Port neighbourhood. The Store showcases Karen’s work and also stocks a thoughtful selection of items produced by other people ranging from design objects to specialty food items.

The contemporary industrial designer knew that Lebanon possessed a cadre of highly skilled if increasingly unused traditional craftspeople – amongst them carvers, brass makers, embroiderers and glass-blowers – and so began to explore the possibility of getting her work made by hand, on an individual basis, rather than mass-produced by machine. Karen’s work falls into a category of its own, one that could be called ‘Industrial Handicrafts’. Unmoored from time thanks to their blend of traditional manufacturing technique and industrial aesthetic, distinctively Lebanese and yet also International, these objects are comfortable in almost any kind of space, as much at home in a traditional Levantine house as they would be in a minimalist interior. As such, they are perfect reflections of the spirit of the city in which they are created.

KHALED EL MAYS Khaled El Mays was born and raised in Lebanon. He studied at the American University of Beirut, earning a degree in architecture. His love for photography and digital art took him to New York City, where he earned an MFA in digital arts from Pratt institute. Khaled’s work tackles multiplicity, repetition and mutations, it is always process based and the outcome is usually an instance of purity and balance extracted from pools of visual information and analysis. In 2011 he moved back to Beirut, Lebanon. While teaching at a local university he began to investigate a new passion: furniture design. For Khaled, this represents an architectural scale where wonders can happen. This year, Khaled is launching his debut collection, RHIZOMES, influenced by visual excess, targeting a colorful repetition with nostalgia from the past; a romantic past that many crave for today. NADA DEBS The name of the company ‘East and East’ lends itself to the name of the furniture design concept created and spearheaded by designer Nada Debs, which is characteristic of the furniture pieces and accessory lines under the NADA DEBS brand. At its core, the ‘East & East’ concept is a celebration of Eastern craftsmanship through contemporary design, using both Arab heritage and tradition as a platform into modernity. The use of the multiple ‘Easts’ is homage to the vibrant medley of Eastern cultures that have influenced the designer’s personal story. NADA Zeineh Architect by training, Nada Zeineh signs several projects in Lebanon among which the Soap Museum in Saïda and the Museum of the American University of Beirut. In parallel, since 1987, she designs and executes jewelry in various materials like terracotta gilded with gold leaf, or threads and plates of brass weaved, twisted, hammered and dipped in gold. In 2004 she opens her showroom, creates her label and dedicates herself exclusively to jewelry and to small sculptures like mobiles, stabiles or small flower tables. Every piece is a project in itself, a project born from a dream, a souvenir, a «collective memory». Her work is inspired by abstract geometric forms inherent to her training as architect, and by the culture of the Middle East. The Greco-roman or the Islamic civilizations, as well as the fauna, the flora or the ethnic jewelry of the region are the different elements of this memory that she reinterprets in order to create simple, light, playful and timeless pieces. WOOD & The presence of wood is always prominent in many of Wood&’s designs due to its connectivity its liveliness and texture; Georges Mohasseb, through his experimentation of materials and textures tries to look for the best possible combinations. RANDA TABBAH Randa Tabbah is a contemporary jewelry designer based in Beirut, Lebanon. Born into a long line of jewelers, she established her own line in 1993 after studying at l’Ecole de Bijouterie et de la Joaillerie (HBJO) in Paris. RIMA KHATIB Rima’s highly personalized designs go beyond the beauty and utility of a piece, to tell a story. They are expressive works with emotional and symbolic meaning, and thus, they are close to art. They are designart. Her original works are the result of careful reflection and the consistent challenging of design and the manufacturing process, as well as, a high concern for detail and good craftsmanship. Originally an architect from the University of Minnesota, Rima worked in architecture and interior design for a few years, before continuing with her education to study industrial design at Creapole in Paris. She recently decided to follow her passion for design and work exclusively on the creation of furniture, and launched her first collection in June 2012. Some of her pieces can be seen at Espaces Ephemeres, Eklekta and Atelier G.

For this year’s edition of the Beirut Design Week, Rima will be showing her most recent creations in an exhibition entitled “A Game of Hide and Seek” at Le Gray Hotel. The idea for this project was inspired by our society’s lifestyle that results in our having more things with less space to put them in. This innovative collection combines different areas in design and explores a variety of materials and techniques to interpret this concept of “hide and seek”. SARAH’S BAG Sarah Beydoun, Creative Director and Founder of Sarah’s Bag, was one of the first designers in Lebanon to bring Middle Eastern pop culture into the mainstream, and to revive and reinvent the region’s rich traditions of craftsmanship, embroidery, crocheting and textile making. After studying sociology at the American University of Beirut, Beydoun earned her master’s degree from the Université Saint Joseph where she wrote her thesis on prostitution in Lebanon. Soon after, she launched Sarah’s Bag and opened her atelier in Beirut in 2000, bringing together her love of design and fashion with her desire to empower and work with underprivileged women. Her line of handmade handbags and accessories is designed around the skills of prisoners and ex- prisoners she has personally trained and worked with for the past thirteen years. OTZ

For how long have you been designing? I am architect and I founded my studio back in 1996. Ever since I have been designing private or public spaces, I created custom-designed pieces of furniture such as table, bed, cabinet and even lighting fixtures, but always for a specific interior. With Facmodo design, I intend to explore the process of designing for manufactured goods market. What is the balance between functionality and aesthetics in your designs? Hard to say! Maybe the key word here is balance, exactly why I chose Facmodo name. Equilibrium is the toughest thing to find: form and function, design and production, aesthetics and practicality, everything matter and you cannot separate one from another. For instance, the first furniture line launched, the OTz system is a combination of cut and bent powder coated metal sheets and I think its beauty lies in the simplicity and easiness of the design, the production and the use, all together.

Can you describe the OTz system? It is a versatile and flexible system of storage and display offering a wide range of dimensions and colors: at least 50 units are already under production (the smallest unit is 40x40x30 and the biggest 400x200x45) and available in all the RAL classic colors, up to 213 hints. So, once you have picked the exact model you need, fitting in you space almost as custommade, you choose the color you feel for: you create your own and unique piece of furniture.

If you could collaborate with another designer, who would it be? Anyone. What I like the most in my job is that I learn constantly and collaborating with a colleague is always fruitful. It is also why I am proud to launch Facmododesign during the second Beirut design Week. It is a great opportunity to show and improve my designs.

What is unique about Facmodo design in the lebanese market? I try to design specific and generic furniture altogether. For OTz, I decided to dimension shelving units based on the generic measurements of things to store and display while allowing for them to be combined and coated according to specific needs and desires. Who's your target audience? Everyone! Everyone who needs solid and convenient bookshelves, music or TV stand with very good finishing at a good quality/price ratio. How do you plan to contribute to the Lebanese design market? I hope the OTz system is good and I would be pleased to contribute in my humble way to the Lebanese know-how and growing resonance.

what does Facmodo mean? It comes from a Latin phrase, facmodo ut,literally manage to do it right. I like the 2 aspects of this sentence: first, the urge of making, I think we design something because we need it; second, the modus, measure, cadence and by extension, in a proper and true way, I believe rhythm is the core of beauty. So, when searching for our brand name, we looked for something meaningful and bespoke.
