INTRODUCTION

Beirut Design Week 2014 3RD EDITION OF OUR MYRIAD DESIGN CULTURE For the third consecutive year, Beirut Design Week brings you again the latest on all forms of design -local and international- spread all over the city, encompassing over 80 events and locations. With every year the design community grows and the goals of Beirut Design Week become more apparent. Since the beginning, the event stands firmly on three pillars which are the foundation and basis of all the activities that place during the week. These pillars are: creative entrepreneurship, education, and community. All three categories are equally important and sum up the reasons why MENA Design Research Center has initiated and continues to nurture this annual event. CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURSHIP Since 2012, Beirut Design Week has helped in building the careers of over 50 young designers in Lebanon; through the promotion of their projects by exhibitions workshops and talks. In specific, the Newcomers Exhibition has proved to be a successful platform which launches young and talented upcoming designer entrepreneurs into the local design scene with much press and media attention. Apart from the promotional aspect, Beirut Design Week also acts as a medium of communication and a platform of networking between established and young designers, in order for the latter to be able to approach well-known and successful Lebanese designers and perceive them as role models. There is no denying that building a successful brand as a designer is an arduous and difficult task that may take years, and therefore, the support system that BDW offers is indeed valued by the participants. Moreover, in order to truly develop the young entrepreneurial spirit in designers, Beirut Design Week now offers a multitude of business-related workshops, that cater directly to the Lebanese designers. Although design in the creative economy of Lebanon is still technically not a major asset, it shows a great deal of potential in terms of equity, human resources, intellectual property, and national brand value.

EDUCATION Local and international educational institutions have always been partners of Beirut Design Week. By offering workshops, talks and exhibitions, the event aims to bridge the gap between universities and the industry, as well as bring in new knowledge from the most progressive design schools in the world. In past 2 years Beirut Design Week has hosted over 25 international guest speakers at conferences, and alone in 2014 this number is set to double. However, not only knowledge that comes from abroad is shared during the week. In fact the majority of workshop s are given by local designers, design studios and companies that dedicate time to teach their skills to the younger generations. Nonetheless, Beirut Design week education is not only for the young but also for the curious of any age. In fact variety is always appreciated by the organizers and the participants. Among all the various disciplines and forms of design: graphics, products, furniture, architecture, fashion, social impact, service, interaction, participatory and co-creation; there is always something of interest even to the person with the least design knowledge or skill. This year Beirut Design Week offers an incredible selection of educational documentaries, inspiring talks and panel discussions, strenuous hands-on workshops, thought-provoking exhibitions, stimulating designer dinners, informative tours and much more. COMMUNITY Without the design community of Lebanon, there would not be a Beirut Design Week. This community is made up of the participants that come from all design disciplines and the audience who attend the events. It is of paramount importance to keep building and developing a collective interest-based network that supports its members. As a dense myriad design culture and an oasis of creative talent in the Middle East and North Africa, this design community is bound to create a positive outlook on the country and provide its designers international recognition.

MENA DESIGN RESEARCH CENTER   BDW 2014 5

MENA DESIGN RESEARCH CENTER The MENA Design Research Center is a non-profit organization based in Beirut, Lebanon. Founded by Doreen Toutikian and Maya Karanouh in 2010, it soon developed from being a company CSR and ThinkTank to one the region’s most progressive design institutions. In 2012, the center initiated and organized the first Beirut Design Week, which set a new standard for Beirut as the “Design Capital of the Middle East”. Design: the creative process involved in problem solving -whether in communications, products, systems or services- could be applied to a varied scale of disciplines and fields. The MENA Design Research Center promotes this diverse understanding of design thinking through the implementation of design research and collaborative multidisciplinary projects in the region.

The MENA Design Research Center is highly involved with social initiatives that concern the Arab World and contributes to a variety of social issues by developing innovative tools through design thinking and co-creation. The center is also closely linked to design education in order to encourage and guide the participation of designers in the non-commercial, public, and non-profit domains. Beirut Design Week was awarded in the Lebanese Social Economic Awards in 2013 as a project supported by TAGbrands and it continues to be the main annual event organized by MENA Design Research Center bringing together all the designers and architects of Lebanon under one national festival dedicated to all forms of design. Gradually, the event has become more international over the years and has now expanded to include exhibitions by renown designers from Europe and beyond.

THE FOUNDERS & ORGANIZERS OF BEIRUT DESIGN WEEK

Doreen Toutikian

DIRECTOR MENA Design Research Center

MAYA KARANOUH

Doreen Toutikian is an interdisciplinary designer and a social entrepreneur. After years of design studies in Cologne and Glasgow, she returned to Beirut to pursue her career in building a collective design community. She believes that the key to all successful design is collaboration. This belief has inspired her to initiate various projects in order to encourage multidisciplinary teamwork for social innovation. Such projects include ‘Public Design Intervention: Beirut’ and DESMEEM. In 2010, she wrote her master thesis on the creation of the MENA Design Research Center under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Michael Erlhoff, which was awarded in the Koelner Design Preis. Toutikian then sought partnership with the private sector in Lebanon to fulfill her goal; leading her to TAGbrands and Maya Karanouh. She is currently Director of the MENA DRC, organizer of Beirut Design Week, educator on design research methods, board member of the International Gender Design Network, fellow in the Salzburg Global Seminar and a regular guest speaker at various conferences around the world. www.menadrc.org

CEO TAGBRANDS & CHAIR, MENA Design Research Center In the past decade Maya Karanouh has been an active entrepreneur and is a leading member of the regional creative sector in the Middle East. Maya is currently the CEO at Tagbrands, an award winning branding strategy company that aligns brand image with the strategic objectives for its clients. Tagbrands is proud to have amongst its regional client base: Banque du Liban, Bank Audi, World Sports Group, IPT, Debbane Saikali Group, Eduvation, Slim Oil, Bar Tartine, Patchi and M1 Group. TAGbrands has won several international design awards such as the Silver Midas Award (2011), Graphis Annual (2011) and the ReBrand 100 Award (2011 & 2014). Maya has been honored to receive the following awards for her work in the private sector as an entrepreneur: the 2006 British Council’s Young Design Entrepreneur of the Year for Lebanon, the “35 under 35 Global Women Entrepreneurs” award in 2007 and the “Rising Talent” award by the Women’s Forum in France in 2008. As Maya is a strong believer in design and innovation she co-founded the MENA Design Research Center in 2010 a non-profit organization dedicated to design research and social change in the Middle East and North Africa, in which she co-organizes Beirut Design Week each year, which is currently in its 3rd edition. www.tagbrandsglobal.com

DUTCH DESIGN EXHIBITION

DANISH CONTEMPORARY DANISH ARCHITECTURE TM

Danish Design & Architecture Initiative

9th June – 15th June 2014, Beirut Souks

THE EXHIBITION Throughout the 20th century, architectural masterminds such as Jørn Utzon, Arne Jacobsen and Johan von Spreckelsen developed a strong identity in Danish architecture, built around an idiom that was minimalist, clean and functional. Today, these same values continue to permeate the works of Danish architects, and they are still very much at the core of the international brand that Danish architecture has become. However, for Danish architects over the past 20 to 30 years there has been an increased focus on delivering solutions that are not only functional and beautiful, but are also sustainable. The projects included in this exhibition – which spreads 21 projects over the categories of Housing, Commercial & Industrial, Health & Learning, Culture and Urban Development – are all examples of contemporary, sustainable architecture by Danish firms. Socially sustainable projects that are programmed for interaction, environmentally sustainable projects that reduce emissions by converting sun, wind and water into energy, and economically sustainable projects, where abandoned buildings and even entire districts are being put to different use – all are represented in this exhibition, which gives an overview of the talent and diversity of contemporary Danish Architects.

MONA HATOUM CONTEMPORARY ART Mona Hatoum first became widely known in the mid 80s for a series of performance and video works that focused with great intensity on the body. In the 90s her work moved increasingly towards large-scale installations and sculpture. Hatoum has developed a language in which familiar, domestic everyday objects are often transformed into foreign, threatening and dangerous things. Even the human body is rendered unfamiliar in ‘Corps étranger’ (1994), a video installation that displays an endoscopic journey through the interior landscape of her own body. Hatoum was born into a Palestinian family in Beirut in 1952 and now lives and works in London and Berlin. She has held solo exhibitions in numerous museums in Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia. She has participated in several important exhibitions including the Turner Prize (1995), The Venice Biennale (1995 and 2005), The Istanbul Biennial (1995), Documenta XI (2002), the Biennale of Sydney (2006), the 3rd Auckland Triennial

(2007) and the Quadrennial for Contemporary Art, Copenhagen (2008). Solo exhibitions include Centre Pompidou, Paris (1994), Tate Britain, London (2000) Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Magasin 3, Stockholm (2004), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2005). Recent exhibitions include Measures of Entanglement, UCCA, Beijing (2009), Interior Landscape, Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice (2009), Witness, Beirut Art Center, Beirut (2010), Le Grand Monde, Fundaciòn Marcelino Botìn, Santander (2010), You Are Still Here, Arter, Istanbul (2012) and at the Kunsmuseum St Gallen, Switzerland (2013). Mona Hatoum was the winner of the prestigious 2011 Joan Miró Prize and a solo exhibition of her work was held at Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona in 2012. She is currently the subject of an extensive survey exhibition entitled Turbulence at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha.

Mieke Meijer & Roy Letterlé, STUDIO MIEKE MEIJER INDUSTRIAL DESIGN Studio Mieke Meijer is a Dutch design studio run by Mieke Meijer and Roy Letterlé. A constructive form language, clean lines and industrial details contribute to a strong, recognizable signature. The designs of Studio Mieke Meijer are never purely functional but offer the user freedom to use them his own way. This helps them retain their autonomy. The designs are mostly hand made in their Eindhoven based workshop. Craftmanship and highly demanding finish are of fundamental importance. Meijer (Wezep, 1982) graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven. Letterle (Kerkrade, 1978) studied architecture at PTH Eindhoven. Together they work on self-initiated and commissioned projects. In addition, they teach at Design Academy Eindhoven and HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. JAN KATH CARPET DESIGN He consciously breaks with traditional ways of seeing and throws strict rules of composition out the window. While an entire generation once rolled up their grandmothers’ Persian rugs and exiled them from their living rooms, Kath’s designs are now bringing them “back to the floor.” “Nobody feels comfortable in clinically styled apartments with highly polished concrete floors,” Kath explains. “Our carpets are an organic dotting of the ‘i‘, islands of well-being with a healing effect in cool interiors – without destroying the overall style.” Kath has developed an unmistakable signature that defines style and makes him one of the most important carpet designers on the international stage today. His designs have earned him numerous accolades, including the “red dot“ award and the “Carpet Design Award“. More and more of his work is now appearing in museums that showcase art and design such as the Frankfurt Museum of Applied Art and the Beijing International Design Triennial. Kath is an autodidact. The matrix for his innovative designs is formed by a relationship to carpets with deep emotional roots: he is from the third generation of a family of carpet dealers who have branches in the Ruhr and in Berlin. When he was just a young boy, he and his father used to visit manufacturers in Iran and Nepal.

These experiences trained his eye and awakened a fundamental understanding of color combinations and proportions. At the same time, Kath never wanted to follow in the footsteps of his parents, and he never intended to continue running their business for them. In order to find his own way, he traveled through Asia and the Middle East when he was 20 years old. During this trip, he wound up, more or less accidentally, in Nepal. There, friends of his family offered him the opportunity to start working as a quality controller in their carpet production business. His “connection with the world of carpets” was reestablished. Later, Kath took control of the manufacturing process and began to produce his own designs. Inspired by numerous trips through vibrant world cities like Paris, Istanbul, New York, Tokyo, Beirut, Sydney, and, last but not least, his home – the Ruhr, with its archaic industrial culture – he quickly developed an individual signature. Although the allure created by imperfection, erosion, and transformation plays a central role in his designs, Kath is “uncompromisingly conservative” where quality is concerned. www.jan-kath.com

Niels BaKkerus TYPOGRAPHY & ILLUSTRATION Niels Bakkerus (1985) is a multi-disciplinary artist working and living in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Graduated in 2010 at St. Joost Breda in Illustration Niels now works as a freelance type designer, illustrator and artist. He works in various different disciplines. Sometimes working on one in specific, sometimes trying to combine them all at the same time. The main ingredients of his work are based on typography, graffiti, street art and illustration. All of these categories are linked to each other and this can be seen in most of his works. Whether it is graffiti combined with illustration, or street art combined with typography. Letters play a big role in all of his work from commercial projects to conceptual art. He works with the aesthetics of letters, the words itself and plays with the image and the meaning of the text. This can be seen best in his calligraphic art and ambigrams. The love for calligraphy, penmanship and typography started with

graffiti. Nowadays he uses spray-paint for painting realistic portraits, paintings and murals. Next to graffiti Niels puts his focus on all kinds of art in public places, this led to his signature street art style called Papercut. He tries to compose new images in public places, billboards and on canvas by cutting and rearranging posters and flyers found on the streets. Niels works for Papierwerk, his own creative studio where he uses his skills in graphic design, illustration and typography on commissioned jobs. Papierwerk is specialized in illustration and custom lettering. Niels spends his time working on commercial jobs and on his personal art projects. Next to that he also plays a big role in the local ultras scene making huge tifo banners for Lighttown Madness, and is part of creative collaboration biki90. www.bakkerus.nl - www.papierwerk.net

WORKSHOPS Service Design

Interaction Design

Designing your City of Tomorrow with Anna Asikainen, Nina Martin and Francisco Blockstrand from AALTO University, Finland

Creating interactive prototypes with Rik Runge from Philips Design

Beirut and any city is only as vibrant as its citizens. And the same can be said of the services you experience in the city. How can we design these services in a way that allows citizen participation to shape the Beirut of tomorrow? New technologies now lie in the palm of your hand. As users and designers, how can these technologies make your city more connected and smarter, not just more high-tech? In this workshop we will look at the intrinsic social network of people and their disciplines in Bourj Hammoud. How are people connected in the life beyond the store fronts? Through design methodologies we will learn from the way the area functions, the artisans

interact, the local identity has been shaped and try to translate those insights into services with and for the area and the rest of Beirut. In three days of this service design workshop at Badguer we will go through a full design process to shape potential services towards a connected city. The methodology has arisen from designers at Aalto University in Finland and their partners in South Africa, during a World Design Capital 2014 project. Come join us to design the Beirut of tomorrow together!

Interactive prototypes are an important tool in your designer toolbox when you want to learn how people really feel about your user interface designs. Philips Design uses a rapid prototyping software (Axure RP) to create interactive mock-ups that closely approach the final user experience. Living in the age of the end of print comes with uneasy responsibilities. The transition from paper to digital, far from being a swift one requires us to re-think not only the design aesthetics but also the value of visual narratives in our life.

A learning safari, in a weekend, a week or even two, that enables you to experience the added value of creativity for your organization. In teams, we work on social challenges in the local context. We go out in the fields to do our research and we co-create possible solutions for a friendly future! During this workshop you will have the opportunity to experience how we use design tools to research with people. We present, discuss and inspire!

CO-CREATION & INNOVATION

Life on the Front Row with Hilary Alexander During this workshop, students will have the opportunity to listen to award winning fashion journalist Hilary Alexander OBE speak about her career traveling the world and reporting on some of the most significant fashion events over the last three decades. Reporting from the catwalk involves meeting deadlines of up to 4 stories a day whilst negotiating a seemingly never-ending cycle of shows combined with the traditional journalistic values of accuracy, fairness and grammar- this is especially so with digital formats being seen by thousands in the press of a button. With careers, reputations and sales dependent on great publicity, the journalist can’t afford to get it wrong.

This is a workshop about experimentation with excessive colors and their impacts on brands. Taking Feer McQueen experience as a base, this talk highlights on the unique experience brands undergo on a ride inside the color wheel. The talk will feature study cases discussing the reasons that push us to use colors excessively. The workshop will allow participants to join us create a colorful image from concept creation, to set design, photography & post-production. This workshop is aimed at designers, art directors and the general public.

The Time Traveler by Rima Khatib & Pierre Hervouet Come explore the Time Traveler world, share with us your ideas, and release your creativity in this social entrepreneurship project through our series of workshops.

This lecture with slides is an ideal opportunity to learn about the professionalism required in getting to the top of the journalistic ladder. TALKS Fostering Creativity and Design Thinking

Designing the Healthcare Experience

With Mona Hatoum, Hilary Alexander, Caroline Simonelli and Esen Karol

With Rik Runge, Philips Healthcare

The world of healthcare is confronting challenges from all sides: an aging population, increasing incidences of lifestyle-related diseases, higher expectations of care, shrinking budgets and rising costs. These coupled with the rapid changes in technology are challenging the health-care systems across the globe. In this talk, we get insight into how Philips’ global design team is helping make sense of these changes so we can all understand the most meaningful methods to reimagine the experiences that can (and will) save lives. Rik Runge is Interaction Design Consultant for healthcare products and services at Philips Design. He is responsible for creating digital solutions that optimize the healthcare experience. For a full bio on the speaker please refer to the International Guests section To celebrate the establishment of the fashion design program at LAU and to highlight the design department’s interest in contributing to the growth of both fashion and graphic design professions, the design department put together a series of talks for Beirut Design Week 2014. Good design involves craft, effective strategies, and visibility. The four speakers selected for this year’s program; Caroline Simonelli, Mona Hatoum, Hilary Alexander and Esen Carol who are committed to the advancement of design in all aspects, will address various facets pertaining to the creative industry through their personal experiences in their respective fields of expertise. We hope this series of talks will raise questions about thinking processes and creative strategies and foster a dialogue among the students, faculty and the broader design community. Mona Hatoum first became widely known in the mid 80s for a series of performance and video works that focused with great intensity on the body. In the 90s her work moved increasingly towards large-scale installations and sculpture. Hatoum has developed a language in which familiar, domestic everyday objects are often transformed into foreign, threatening and dangerous things. Hilary Alexander is the former Fashion Director of The Daily Telegraph. She retired from the Telegraph in 2011, after 26 years, and has continued to work as a freelance stylist and writer, for websites and magazines including Hello!, and as a fashion consultant for Marks & Spencer’ s Per Una range. Caroline Simonelli is a Lebanese/American designer who teaches fashion design at Parsons the New School for Design in New York. Before teaching, Caroline had a long career as a fashion designer in women’s dress apparel. Esen Karol graduated from Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul and received her master’s degree in communications design from Pratt Institute, New York, where she studied with Fulbright scholarship. She has participated in several international exhibitions and design events. For full bios on the speakers please refer to the International Guests section

You can be cool while still keeping your feet warm! With his modern designs, Jan Kath is creating a completely new perspective on carpets. Guided by a bold approach in his work, Kath, originally from Bochum, combines classical elements of Oriental carpets with contemporary minimalist design. He consciously breaks with traditional ways of seeing and throws strict rules of composition out the window. Street Art, Graffiti, Illustration & Typography With Niels Bakkerus

Nouvelle Vague: The New French Domestic Landscape With Cédric Morisset and Pauline Deltour

Niels Bakkerus, works as a freelance type designer, illustrator and artist. The main ingredients of his work are based on typography, graffiti, street art and illustration. Letters play a big role in all of his work from commercial projects to conceptual art. He works with the aesthetics of letters, the words itself and plays with the image and the meaning of the text. This can be seen best in his calligraphic art and ambigrams. Nowadays he uses spray-paint for creating realistic portraits, paintings and murals. Next to graffiti Niels puts his focus on all kinds of art in public places, this led to his signature streetart style called Papercut. He tries to compose new images in public places, billboards and on canvas by cutting and rearranging posters and flyers found on the streets. In this presentation he will be showcasing examples of his work from the past years. For a full bio on the speaker please refer to the International Guests section

Designing your City of Tomorrow

Design: Play seriously

With Anna Asikainen, Nina Martin and Francisco Blockstrand

Beirut and any city is only as vibrant as its citizens. And the same can be said of the services you experience in the city. How can we design these services in a way that allows citizen participation to shape the Beirut of tomorrow? New technologies now lie in the palm of your hand. As users and designers, how can these technologies make your city more connected and smarter, and not just more high-tech? Taking Bourj Hammoud as a case study and looking at the intrinsic social network of people and their disciplines, the designers are analyzing how the area functions, how the artisans interact, and how the local identity has been shaped to try to translate those insights into services. The methodology has arisen from designers at Aalto University in Finland and their partners in South Africa, during a World Design Capital 2014 project. This talk is the presentation of the outcomes of a workshop being given during Beirut Design Week in the form of an open discussion with the participants of the workshop. The discussion will be followed by a lunch at Badguer. Nina Martin is a social designer and aspiring entrepreneur from Berlin, Germany with a background in New Media and Film Production. Using video tools, new technologies and design thinking methodologies, she engages with social challenges through participatory workshops and frameworks. Anna Asikainen, currently working as Competence Manager at Aalto University Executive Education, is a social entrepreneur and education professional from Finland who feels passionate about social business, smart city initiatives, cleantech and renewable energy solutions. Francisco Blockstrand, Co-founder and CEO of Usaver Mexico, is a social entrepreneur with a passion for sustainability, social responsibility and environmental solutions from Mexico. Contemporary Danish Architecture Exhibition

Lighting Fixtures Collection Launch

In collaboration with the Danish Embassy in Lebanon, Beirut Design Week presents 21 examples of contemporary Danish Architecture. Throughout the 20th century, architectural masterminds such as Jørn Utzon, Arne Jacobsen and Johan von Spreckelsen developed a strong identity in Danish architecture, built around an idiom that was minimalist, clean and functional. Today, these same values continue to permeate the works of Danish architects, and they are still very much at the core of the inter¬national brand that Danish architecture has become. However, for Danish architects over the past 20 to 30 years there has been an increased focus on delivering solutions that are not only functional and beautiful, but are also sustainable. The projects included in this exhibition – which spreads 21 projects over the categories of

DUTCH DESIGN EXHIBITION

june 9 - 15, Dutch Design Venue, Beirut Souks, Jewelry Section

Ghassan Salameh Studio in collaboration with Atelier Celine el Hage

Housing, Commercial & Industrial, Health & Learning, Culture and Urban Development – are all examples of contemporary, sustainable architecture by Danish firms. Socially sustainable projects that are programmed for interaction, environmentally sustainable projects that reduce emissions by converting sun, wind and water into energy, and economically sustainable projects, where abandoned buildings and even entire districts are be¬ing put to different use – all are represented in this exhibition, which gives an overview of the talent and diversity of contemporary Danish Architects.

The latest Lighting Fixtures collection is composed of metal and glass and based on the concept of abstraction of Islamic patterns. Each piece is a contemporary artefact that tries to break the pattern and deform it to reintroduce the idea of a redefined Arabic or oriental design that counts heavily on oriental patterns and Moucharrabiyas. The metal grid is perfectly cut and constructed on measure then fused with glass into a chandelier reminiscing the idea of traditional Moroccan lanterns but introducing a new presentation based primarily on a wellcalculated process of experimentation. This project is in collaboration with Atelier Celine Hage, a crafts workshop specialized in the creation of new textures and materials on glass.

Joe Fish presents every designer’s worst nightmare

I went looking for Palestine by Joan Baz and Dar Onboz

The Friday the 13th Exhibition

I went looking for Palestine but I found a book, a guided tour, a souvenir shop.

What would happen if your most horrific design nightmares came to life in one single space?

A personal journey to the South of Lebanon raises questions regarding borders and identity. As a result, a counting book “Count to ten with: I went looking for Palestine but I found“ was created, retracing elements that were found along the way. Traditional patterns used in Palestinian embroidery were most familiar to Palestinian women as impressions of their daily surroundings. When I looked for Palestine I found non-traditional patterns with new definitions, cross-stitched, stamped and embroidered in our present realities.

This June, on Friday the 13th, Joe Fish is bringing together the darkest moments of every designer’s dreams in an exhibition that will haunt you for nights to come. Join us for a nightmare or two, some creepy cocktails, and a few fishy drawings.

While you revisit the journey to the south, a souvenir shop is found at the end of the borders inviting you to ask, count and stamp. your borders, your identities, your patterns .

The line is a series of lamp shades that are visualized through diverse emotions and are shown in multiple situations.

The Artisans tour in Bourj Hammoud

TOUR: Discover the Mar Mikhael Stairs

The Artisan Initiative aims to address the current threat arising amongst the craftsmanship community in Bourj Hammoud and Lebanon in whole. The preservation of craftsmanship in Bourj Hammoud project is an initiative that is working towards the sustainability of this community. Craftsmanship in Bourj Hammoud is not just an industry, it represents the culture and the identity of the people living and working there. A historical and cultural wealth will be transmitted to future generations through this project, as well the creation of new jobs and empowerment of underprivileged young people. The project will kick start as a first step from Bourj Hammoud and will then spread all over Lebanon where traditional industry has flourished since the 50’s as a manufacturing center of excellence.

The Artisan Initiative will consist in linking current designers as well as designs students/future designers of Lebanon as well as the region to the ateliers and independent artisans on one end and on the other end to connect these ateliers to underprivileged youth and artisans who are facing difficulties finding a job. The tour will introduce the participants to the ateliers and independent artisans from different fields that are located in Bourj Hammoud. The tour will launch from The Artisan Initiative’s center in Bourj Hammoud in Centre Blanco at 9am and will end approximately at 1pm followed by a lunch at Badguer.

Between the main street of Mar Mikhael and the area know as Geitawi lie 8 major stairs and a few other hidden ones, most of which date from the ottoman era. These stairs are the witnesses of how life used to be in the Beirut in the 50’s and 60’s back when the train was still running down the coast and are today forgotten elements of our heritage. In an effort to revitalize these neglected public spaces, the Design Department at A.L.B.A. (Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts) is offering guided tours to rediscover the stories and pathways hidden amongst those stairs. We have gathered research and stories around this area and we would to share some of that with you. The tour can be done in English, French or Arabic according to the group’s preference. Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes and prepare to go up and down a few (not too many we promise) stairs.

The Human Scale

Exit through the gift shop

50% of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050 this will increase to 80%. Life in a mega city is both enchanting and problematic. Today we face peak oil, climate change, loneliness and severe health issues due to our way of life. But why? The Danish architect and professor Jan Gehl has studied human behavior in cities through 40 years. He has documented how modern cities repel human interaction, and argues that we can build cities in a way, which takes human needs for inclusion and intimacy into account.

The story of how an eccentric French shop keeper and amateur film maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner. The film contains footage of Banksy, Shephard Fairey, Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work.

Google & The World Brain The story of the most ambitious project ever conceived on the Internet. In 2002 Google began to scan millions of books in an effort to create a giant global library, containing every book in existence. They had an even greater purpose - to create a higher form of intelligence, something that HG Wells had predicted in his 1937 essay “World Brain”. But over half the books Google scanned were in copyright, and authors across the world launched a campaign to stop Google, which climaxed in a New York courtroom in 2011. A film about the dreams, dilemmas and dangers of the Internet.

The story of “Moi et ma puce” goes beyond the beauty of the shoes, it’s the story of a unique bond, familiarity, and friendship between moms and daughters; the story of setting high standards for daughters at an early age in terms of fashion and shoes; and the story of little girls whose dream comes true as they wear same shoes as their moms.

NOUR HAGE Nour graduated from Parsons Paris School of Art and Design in 2010, with a major in Fashion Design. She then went on to work for Paris-based German designer Damir Doma before returning to Beirut in 2012, where she started her eponymous line; Nour Hage. Growing up in Beirut, she was constantly confronted with decay and destruction, learning to find the beauty in the city’s imperfections. Beirut is also a city where you are confronted with the new and the old coexisting side by side, and as a consequence her work focuses on the interplay between soft and rough textures. The designs are rooted in a certain world view, a concept of beauty and its transience, but are above all wearable and contemporary.

SACOCHE Sacoche’s creations have beautiful design, use the best quality materials, and boast excellent craftsmanship … but perhaps the single most remarkable trait shared by our products is the perfected art of imperfection. What differs our Designs is that each individual item is one-of-a-kind, with its own character and charm, each item is made of a different types of leather ( oily pull-up, Suede, Nubuck) , from the lining to the strap, every component comes out looking beautifully vintage and “Modern”. If you like artificially smoothed leather or cookie-cutter designs, Sacoche’s products are NOT for you. Instead, if you embrace the true vintage concept and the idea of a bag or an accessory growing old with you, then look no further … you have met your match.

SIWAR KRAYTEM Siwar Kraytem is a freshly graduating Graphic Designer. She is passionate about two things above all: graphic design and cycling. Illustration is something she enjoys too, she tries to incorporate that in her design work whenever possible. She has been pedaling through the streets of Beirut for more than 2 years and it has helped her find balance in the city of organised chaos and grow a closer and more intimate relationship with Beirut. ABCycling in Beirut is a cycling guide to Beirut. It is a translation of the experience of cycling around Beirut. It’s a compilation of questions and answers, pointers and tips for those willing to start a cycling quest in Beirut. It acts as a new pair of glasses to the city and discusses the solution of going about Beirut on two-wheels.

WE SHAPE HEARTS We shape hearts is the lovechild of a small group of designers who want to shape the world around them with beautiful things. However, they don’t particularly like hearts and vow never to use them in their designs. We shape hearts is born out of frustration because of all the things that are missing at home, but also out of passion to create and explore what might be possible. A love/hate relationship with the city, the people, the objects and all the intangibles is the fuel that brought together these young minds and inspired them to start an insignificant revolution. The design collections follow no calculated direction; instead, they follow the heart. Crap de la Crap.

ART FACTUM GALLERY Art Factum Gallery is a fresh space devoted to presenting all forms of contemporary art and design. Founded in 2011, it is located in Beirut’s industrial Quarantine District, and exists as the renovated product of an old steel factory. As for the Design scene, with the country’s artistic spotlight having slightly shifted into the more utilitarian and three-dimensional aspect of art forms and products, Art Factum Gallery chooses to mostly endorse local designers. The gallery’s specific annual design show serves to introduce new talents or propagate designers that have already launched their careers, all in all serving to emphasize the importance of contemporary Lebanese design. It is also important to highlight that the designers and the gallery itself tend to utilize local materials and crafts for the production of the design items.

Art Factum Gallery represents and supports several international and local artists and designers in the Middle Eastern region. Marc Dibeh has collaborated with Art Factum Gallery during two design exhibitions, the first in 2012, All Down the Line, which included his series Wires with Marc Baroud; the second design exhibition was SPECTRUM, in 2013, in which he showcased his series of broken mirrors entitled Please Don’t Tell Mom. His works have also been showcased by Art Factum Gallery in Design Miami 2013 and Design Days Dubai 2014 and 2013.

BOKJA Our story began with a name: Bokja*, and soon turned into a verb. Bokja became our active way of re-imagining different possibilities, adding unexpected twists and creating new legacies from overlooked ideas. Our design and craft studio remixes tradition through a contemporary perspective that is constantly walking the fine line between art, design and life. At the heart of Bokja is a desire to revive a lifestyle that we are watching slowly disappear. A lifestyle where intuitions are followed, small moments are savored and emotional complexities are not only embraced but also celebrated. With everything hand built in Beirut, it is the city that set our stitches in motion.

Our assemblages are a live celebration of the differences that bring us all together in the most unexpected ways. In a boldly beautiful voice, we tell stories that resonate to find a common language. Everyone is invited. *Bokja: a precious piece of fabric to wrap a woman’s most cherished possessions. GHASSAN SALAMEH In collaboration with Atelier Celine el Hage

A new Lighting Fixtures collection composed of metal and glass. The concept is an abstraction of the islamic pattern by taking a random initial basic shape and repeating it following a grid to end up looking like an Islamic or oriental pattern.

Ghassan’s philosophy on being a designer is limitless. He believes that being well-rounded in a plethora of skills without limiting oneself to a single field of design is what makes a great designer, and he is a practitioner of his philosophy.

It is a contemporary piece that tries to break the pattern and deform it to reintroduce the idea of contemporary arabic or oriental design that counts heavily on oriental patterns and Moucharrabiyas. The metal grid is perfectly cut and constructed on measure then fused with glass into a chandelier reminiscing the idea of traditional Moroccan lanterns but introducing a new presentation based primarily on a well calculated process of experimentation.

Hilights Sculpting space with our creative touch of lighting, Hilights pioneered in the Lighting Design profession. We do not explain architecture we express it. At Hilights we believe in a fresh and original approach. Each project is given its own identity and character. One that is a reflectance of the clients’ pleasure and the architects design vision.

‘Light always follows the path of the beautiful’; we compliment the beauty of the architectural design. The architect’s greatest satisfaction is when he sees his jewel project at night as much as he would cherish it during the day. We have long researched and developed our techniques in the art of lighting. We have the knowledge and the tools to create the ultimate mix that provides the blend of light, color and texture with every architectural theme. At Hilights we are free from all commitment, brands and tags. Our goal is achieving the best results with the best product available. But many times we are challenged with situations where we have to create our own source of light. This is when we put our long experience to the test and come out on top with the most favorable solution.

JOE FISH Joe Fish began as an idea. Trapped in an unwholesome advertising industry, he felt like a goldfish swimming in circles. He made up his mind to strike out on his own, in search of a place where the seaweed is greener. On February 7, 2010, Joe Fish was officially founded as a creative boutique agency with the sole goal of sharing beautiful ideas. Likeminded individuals soon joined in, average Joes with hearts bigger than their egos, and together they formed a multidisciplinary team with a wide range of talents and a common love for their craft. And so Joe Fish was formed, bringing together simple people who believe in simple solutions… people who don’t follow the crowd, but their instincts…who don’t choose their brands, but let the brands choose them…a bunch of working not-so-stiffs who don’t take themselves too seriously, only their job. Now Joe is making his way in the world, never pretending to be the biggest fish in the pond, just glad to be himself. As a fish, he has firsthand knowledge about “getting them hooked” and “reeling them in”, but the only “bait” he’s likely to take is the lure of friendship. The only body he wants to increase is his family. EXHIBITION A Designer’s Worst Nightmare Date & Time: June 13, 6:13pm

LIWAN LIWAN Paris-Beirut, the world of the Mediterranean-oriental nomad.

A lightened vision filled with innovation and modernity in terms of materials, cuts, colors.

The “House Wear” and the “Lounge wear” in LIWAN Paris-Beirut offer a new idea of the east.

Twenty years of creation signed Lina Audi: a living and simplified version of forms, built upon an ancestral savoir-faire, that of the artisans of the Middle-East, and of Lebanon in particular.

In Liwan every object is unique. Handmade. Inspired by the past. Adapted to the present.

Traditional objects are transformed into modern pieces. Easy to wear, to carry, to adapt. They’re the bridge between the old and the new. They’re what are left when the pointless has been plucked out. For example, the Liwan Sandals that have made appearances all around the world… Liwan maintains its focus around the same constant: a dream without exotica, luxury without excess. The fusion of fashion and memory. One can’t find everything at Liwan, but what one does find is unique.

NADA DEBS The ‘East & East’ concept is a celebration of Eastern craftsmanship through contemporary design, using both Arab heritage and tradition as a platform into modernity. The use of the multiple ‘Easts’--a homage to the vibrant medley of Eastern cultures that have influenced the designer’s personal story--is a harmonious translation of the minimalism ideals of the Far East and the contrasting warm patterns typical of Arabesque design made into classic, high quality interior pieces. The ‘Contemporary’ collection, an extension of the concept illustrates the blend of Western influence on Middle Eastern design; from the ‘form and function’ design ideals of the US to the refinement of European antiquated design. This clarity of concept provides the perfect canvas for designer Nada Debs to continually explore newer translations of Arab identity through the fusion of design disciplines, the experimental use of materials, adoption of international trends and most importantly, the preservation of local craftsmanship across the Middle East.

NADA ZEINEH Architect by training, Nada Zeineh signs several projects in Lebanon among which the Soap Museum in Saida and the Museum of the American University of Beirut. In parallel, since 1987, she designs and executes jewelry in various materials like terracotta gilded with gold leaf, or threads and plates of brass weaved, twisted, hammered and dipped in gold.

Her work is inspired by abstract geometric forms inherent to her training as architect, and by the culture of the Middle East. The Greco-roman or the Islamic civilizations, as well as the fauna , the flora or the ethnic jewelry of the region are the different elements of this memory that she reinterprets in order to create simple, light, playful and timeless pieces.

In 2004 she opens her showroom, creates her label Nounzein and dedicates herself exclusively to jewelry and to small sculptures like mobiles, stabiles or small flower tables. For her, every piece is a project in itself, a project born from a dream, a souvenir, a «collective memory».

RIMA KHATIB Rima Khatib draws on her different design education and professional experience to create her unconventional designs. Trained as an architect in the USA and as an industrial designer in Paris, she started working exclusively on furniture design two years ago and showed her first collection at the BDW 2012. Rima is inspired to develop pieces that respond to a need, by creating inventive solutions to solve particular problems. Such is the case in the Cache-cache coat hangers, where the design allows the hanging clothes to be hidden from view in a truly innovative object. The tables from the Precious Waste collection provide a beautiful and original solution to the environmental pressures of waste with a very challenging production technique. The Bouquet hot plate coasters are another ingenious design, where the floral-shaped coaster can be gathered together, or spread apart, to suit the size of the hot plate, thus saving the user from the need for different size coasters, all in a very poetic esthetic quality, that is her individual style.

As a postmodernist, Rima likes to express the symbolic and the emotional in her designs, and carries them further, beyond their functional and the esthetic quality, to tell a story. Rima has participated in many exhibitions locally and internationally and shows different pieces in selected galleries around Beirut such as, Platform 39, Salt, Le Loft 271, Espaces Ephemeres, Eklekta and Carousel. This year, Rima will focus on a new project for the BDW, the Time Traveler, a Lebanese toy that visits our past, teaching children about our history and culture through play. With a group of designers, she developed this product which will be produced by the women of SOS children’s village. The launching of this toy is expected before the end of the year.

SARAH’S BAG Born and raised in Lebanon, Sarah Beydoun is the Creative Director and Founder of Sarah’s Bag. She belongs to a generation of Beirut-based designers who came of age during the country’s sixteen-year civil war and are now contributing to rebuilding the city’s cultural life through their creative passion. Beydoun was one of the first designers in Lebanon to bring Middle Eastern pop culture into the mainstream, and to revive and reinvent the region’s rich traditions of craftsmanship, embroidery, crocheting and textile making.

After studying sociology at the American University of Beirut, Beydoun earned her master’s degree from the Université Saint Joseph where she wrote her thesis on prostitution in Lebanon. Soon after, she launched Sarah’s Bag and opened her atelier in Beirut in 2000, bringing together her love of design and fashion with her desire to empower and work with underprivileged women. Her line of handmade handbags and accessories is designed around the skills of prisoners and exprisoners she has personally trained and worked with for the past thirteen years. Today over 150 artisans form the backbone of Sarah’s Bag, making it one of the most successful social entrepreneurship brands in the region. And stylish women from Tokyo to Caracas via Beirut and Paris are sitting up and taking notice.

theOtherDada Active since 2010, the architecture lab theOtherDada defends an alternative position towards the current practice of sustainability through exploration of the context and medium, invoking new relationships between climate, landscape, and inhabitants.

To survey, observe, and register the existing state – its resources, organisms, humidity, winds, insolation, earth, eventual construct, and its usage – constitute the initial program we set preliminary to any constructive action. Informed by our research into biomimicry, this extremely precise and demanding introspective method leads to reconsider the world differently: like a system of relationships, exchanges, and not like a system of isolated objects and actions. This generates new spatial experiments and living conditions that are more open, light and porous through invention of dynamic play between the interior and exterior; an intricate interdependency. theOtherDada works within a collaborative process between architects, scientists, botanists, artists, economists and craftsmen who believe sustainability is an attitude. A curious and activist look directed on the existing. A knowledgeable and happy relationship towards the pleasure of an environment with the potential to be transformed, to produce new reasons to inhabit.
