QUOTES
FROM PARTICIPANTS & GUESTS
Rowan BAIN - VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM: “bdw was packed with events, talks and workshops which reflected the exciting diversity and range of designers working in beirut today. Highlights included nada deb’s craftcool workshop and ghassan salameh’s magma lighting fixtures. The week provided an energetic and inspiring introduction to contemporary design in the region.” Ibrahim Nehme - THE OUTPOST: “Judging from the turnout at our housewarming party as part of Beirut Design Week’s Mar Mikhail day, I can say that this event has become an important catalyst of the city’s design economy - if there’s such a word, especially in its ability to channel the efforts of local designers towards a place that is both productive and effective.” Yasmine TAAN - LEBANESE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY: “I am delighted to organize this series of talks at LAU in collaboration with the BEIRUT DESIGN WEEK, and be part of the dynamic vibes that this event is creating around Beirut during this week. I can’t thank enough Maya Karanouh and Doreen Toutikian for initiating an inspiring design community around this city.”
Sarah Beydoun - SARAH’S BAG: “We’ve always believed in Lebanon’s position as one of the region’s top creative hubs; this was proven at BDW. There was a collective effort, a kind of cultural resistance against the current situation in the country and it was so inspiring to be part of that.” Maria and Hoda - BOKJA: “The turn out, especially the international part of it was quite impressive, and the Design scene in Beirut came alive. We ARE quite confident that it will only gain momentum in the future! Our friends from the international press were very impressed, and have a lot to talk about, especially their Beirut experience!”. Azzi and Osta: “It was such a buzz, We will definitely do it again!” Adib dada - DADA & ASSOCIATES: “BDW was a great platform to engage with new collaborators” Mohamed Maktabi - IWAN MAKTABI: “In BDW we had the opportunity to share with a well-informed audience the vanguard of design and carpets expressed in through the Tamreen and Erased Heritage collections. The conversations with the design fans highlighted how the intimate interaction between design and refined skill finds its best expression in carpets particularly the contemporary styles that are revolutionizing the carpet industry. We and many more will be coming back for more engaging conversations in BDW for the unique opportunity it offers.”

Monday 9 June LAUNCHING EVENT AT Beirut Souks & SAIFI VILLAGE
THE Beirut Design Week 2014 REPORT AN OVERVIEW OF OUR THIRD YEAR For the third consecutive year, Beirut Design Week takes over the city, exploring local and international design talent with over 20 events daily including exhibitions, workshops, open studios, talks, competitions and festivities while bringing together more than 80 participants and dozens of partners and sponsors as one major community in Lebanon. The week kicks off with the launching event at the Beirut Souks with introductions from founders and organizers of the event Doreen Toutikian and Maya Karanouh along with main partners Hester Somsen, Dutch Ambassador to Lebanon, Anders Ă˜stervang representing the Danish Embassy in Lebanon, and Charles Arbid, president of the Lebanese Franchise Association. The main events of the day included the Dutch Design Exhibition and the Danish Architecture Exhibition also at the Beirut Souks, along with exhibitions and a competition launch from local participants Squad Design and Ghassan Salameh in collaboration
with Celine Hage. The Newcomers Exhibition was the main event in the neighboring Saifi Village. The events of Beirut Design Week are designed specifically so that participants and guests can discover the city at the same time as discovering the work of all the designers. Each day covers a different area of the city, which means that Beirut is showcased too. The venues are all close together within their respective areas, allowing people to stroll from exhibition to exhibition throughout the day. This year, Beirut Design Week had 87 locations spread across Ashrafieh, Downtown, Beirut Souks, Saifi Village, Mar Mikhael, Karantina, Bourj Hammoud, Jisr Wati, Gemmayze, Sursock and Hamra. We aim to encourage people to leave their cars behind and take this opportunity to discover the smaller streets of the city thanks to the map. This allows guests to feel more integrated and involved in the events of Beirut Design Week, as they can make new acquaintances and then move from venue to venue together.

DANISH ARCHITECTURE EXHIBITION
Beirut Design Week 2014 presented 21 examples of contemporary Danish architecture as one of the main events in Beirut Souks. These were a reflection on how, apart from being functional and beautiful, Danish architects have for the past 30 years been some of the leading innovators in sustainability worldwide. This exhibition included examples from different categories: Housing, Commercial & Industrial, Health & Learning, Culture and Urban Development. All these projects reduce emissions by converting sun, wind and water into energy. The exhibition also showed examples of economically sustainable projects, where abandoned buildings and even entire districts are being put to use in different and innovative ways. “Danish architecture has been recognized internationally for decades. Great names like Jørn Utzon, Arne Jacobsen and Henning Larsen are appreciated all over the world, but in recent years a new generation of Danish architects has emerged. Their work continues the architectural tradition of simple, elegant, artful solutions with built-in functionality and an increased emphasis on social, economic and environmental sustainability. Their architecture integrates art and science in buildings where aesthetic qualities, functionality and technology are merged in solutions which are both effective and inspiring. Denmark formulated the first rules for energy efficient buildings as early as 1976. Since then, the requirements have been tightened several times and extended to cover the energy consumption of heating, ventilation as well as lighting.”

NEWCOMERS EXHIBITION
The Newcomers Exhibition was held in Saifi Village on the opening day as well, as another one of the main BDW annual events. Guests and participants could make the most of the evening, discovering young, talented local designers and enjoying some drinks and food. This year’s exhibition featured nine newcomers: Kera by Karen Kanaan, Karma J by Johanna Abchée, Sana’ by Sanaa Ayoub, Moi et ma puce, We Shape Hearts, Nour Hage, One plus One by Cyrille Najjar, Siwar Kraytem and and finally, Sacoche. These designers all worked together in the same space, and this allowed guests to discover a whole variety of design fields at the same time. The exhibition remained open throughout Beirut Design Week, and was met very enthusiastically by passers by. MENA Design Research Centre prides itself on its support system for these designers and those from previous years, and continues to help them through marketing, funding, consulting and other promotional events to build a collective and collaborative design community here in Lebanon. In fact, some of this year’s participants were newcomers in 2013.

THE RUG COMPANY
The second day of Beirut Design Week kicked off with an inspiring talk by Cedric Morisset and Pauline Deltour titled Nouvelle Vague: The New French Domestic Landscape. Even in the past ten to fifteen years, Morisset says, a growing number of young French editors has emerged, which means that a lot of French designers can now produce in France, rather than abroad. These editors include Moustache, Petite Friture, Superette, Specimen, Saint Luc, Goodbye Edison and many more. This is a departure from old ways, when Roche Bobois and Ligne Roset were the only famous French editors. France is evolving, opening itself up in many ways to new possibilities, and design is one of the fields benefiting from these changes. The second talk of the day featured the famous Jan Kath, a carpet designer and entrepreneur from Germany. He spoke of his travel adventures in different parts of the world, exploring textiles and patterns from foreign lands weaved in with his contemporary style and techniques.

WORKSHOPS Design for Social Impact T+LOCAL with T+HUIS For a more integrated and supported learning experience, T+LOCAL offers social design modules. A learning safari, in a weekend, a week or even two, that enables you to experience the added value of creativity for your organization. In teams, we work on social challenges in the local context. We go out in the fields to do our research and we co-create possible solutions for a friendly future! During this workshop you will have the opportunity to experience how we use design tools to research with people. We present, discuss and inspire!
Typography & Calligraphy Designing Ambigrams with Niels Bakkerus An ambigram is a word you can read normally but also upside down. Niels will show examples of ambigrams and explain about the technique. Then participants will be required to work on their own ambigram. It’s a fun and basic introduction, which really pushes designers to explore the boundaries of typography and calligraphy. Niels Bakkerus is a multi-disciplinary artist working and living in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He graduated from St. Joost Breda in Illustration and now works as a freelance type designer, illustrator and graffiti artist.
Editorial Design Augmenting the magazine: editorial design out of the box by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini Living in the age of the end of print comes with uneasy responsibilities. The transition from paper to digital, far from being a swift one requires us to re-think not only the design aesthetics but also the value of visual narratives in our life. And while e-readers and tablets begin to be believable as substitutes for books and newspapers, other physical aspects of the reading experience are missing due to technological constraints. Before digital, magazines had their own way of providing nonlinear, multisensory, immersive reading experiences: we browse their pages, appreciate different paper stocks, feel motivated by the personal narrative that a good editor can infuse in the pages he creates. This talk and workshop are made to go back to the roots of what makes a magazine exciting: its design rhythm, its economic poetry, and its visual wonder. This workshop is aimed at art directors, editors, designers and general audience.

WORKSHOPS Service Design Designing your City of Tomorrow with Anna Asikainen, Nina Martin and Francisco Blockstrand from AALTO University, Finland Beirut and any city is only as vibrant as its citizens. And the same can be said of the services you experience in the city. How can we design these services in a way that allows citizen participation to shape the Beirut of tomorrow? New technologies now lie in the palm of your hand. As users and designers, how can these technologies make your city more connected and smarter, not just more high-tech? Anna Asikainen, Nina Martin and Francisco Blockstrand came together for their service design workshop, in which participants looked at the intrinsic social network of people and their disciplines in Bourj Hammoud. They learned from the way the area functions, how the artisans interact and how the local identity has been shaped and tried to translate those insights into services.
Interaction Design Creating interactive prototypes with Rik Runge from Philips Design Interactive prototypes are an important tool in your designer toolbox when you want to learn how people really feel about your user interface designs. Philips Design uses a rapid prototyping software (Axure RP) to create interactive mock-ups that closely approach the final user experience. By doing so they are able to test assumptions and learn where to improve their designs. In this workshop, we get a hands-on training into using Axure RP from Rik Runge, Interaction Design Consultant at Philips Design. We will learn to create a basic interactive prototype that will run on your tablet or smartphone.
STARTUP Design Startup Design by Mirada Madrid, Happenings, and Bader Mirada Madrid, Happenings and Bader held a “Startup Design workshop for people with experience looking to add value to their business model, to help them build, break and rebuild their brand. Reporting from the catwalk involves meeting deadlines of up to 4 stories a day whilst negotiating a seemingly never-ending cycle of shows combined with the traditional journalistic values of accuracy, fairness and grammar- this is especially so with digital formats being seen by thousands in the press of a button. With careers, reputations and sales dependent on great publicity, the journalist can’t afford to get it wrong.

film screenings THE HUMAN SCALE 50 % of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050 this will increase to 80%. Life in a mega city is both enchanting and problematic. The Danish architect and professor Jan Gehl has studied human behavior in cities through 40 years. He has documented how modern cities repel human interaction, and argues that we can build cities in a way, which takes human needs for inclusion and intimacy into account.
GOOGLE & THE WORLD BRAIN The story of the most ambitious project ever conceived on the Internet. In 2002 Google began to scan millions of books in an effort to create a giant global library, containing every book in existence. They had an even greater purpose - to create a higher form of intelligence, something that HG Wells had predicted in his 1937 essay “World Brain”.
DESIGN IS ONE “ If you can’t find it, design it”, this has the motto of the duo that influenced immensely much of what we see today. Design is One is a documentary about Lella and Massimo Vignelli, the prolific husband and wife design duo whose company, Vignelli Associates, has done wide-ranging design work for clients like American Airlines and IBM.
