This last month was arguably the busiest December in the history of our Club and a great deal was accomplished by the many dedicated members who gave up much of their time during the Festive Season.

December projects included the Annual Senior Citizens Christmas Party, food collections at the S u p e r s p a r, f o o d p a r c e l distributions, The Old Pont in Port Edward, R10000-00 donation to YouthworX, schools prizegiving ceremonies, childrens Christmas

The donation of 3 heat pumps to Reinhardt’s Place will greatly reduce their electricity consumption and provide plenty of hot water for the mentally handicapped patients at this facility.

Lion Philip Bromley kindly attended YouthworX in Shelly Beach on behalf of the Club and officially handed over a Cheque to the value of R10 000-00.

Lion Philip also organised the annual food collection and rosters for members at the Harbourview Superspar during the weekend of 1416 December.

Lion Philip and Lion Lady Esme are in the process of packing as they will be relocating to the Western Cape. We will be bidding a sad farewell to them at

D

uring the afternoon of Thursday 3rd January, the South Coast, and the rest of the world received the shocking news that our very own Olympic Cyclist, Burry Stander was tragically killed in a road accident in Shelly Beach. Tributes have been pouring in from around the world, mostly via Facebook and Twitter and most local and many international news publications have headlined this very sad news.

25 year old Burry died doing what he loved, riding his bike and training for his next big event. He was a true South African sporting legend who can not be easily replaced.

Burry was born in Port Shepstone on 16th September 1987 and lived with his family on a farm (smallholding) in the suburb of Umtentweni. He began mountain biking from the age of 10-years old with his father and older brothers on their farm.

In May last year he married his long-time sweetheart, Cherise Taylor, also a South African cyclist, and they were often seen riding together on the South Coast.

By always racing to his full potential, he steadily progressed through the ranks and won the first of his South African and African titles in 1999 in the U13 category.

Stander then raced 4 races in the national series in the USA in 2005, winning three of them; he made such an impact that he secured his first international pro team ride for the GT Factory Team in 2006.

Stander went on to claim the 2008 U23 World Cup series title, finished 2nd in the U23 World Championships and finished 15th at the Beijing Olympic Games that year.

Specialized Racing signed Stander onto their Pro team in 2009, where he continued to display his talent and commitment, claiming the 2009 U23 World Championship title in Canberra, Australia.

In 2010, Stander finished 3rd in the Elite XCO World Championship in Mont St. Anne, Canada, and 3rd in the Marathon World Championship in St. Wendel, Germany. In 2011 and 2012, Stander and his Specialized Racing teammate Christoph Sauser (SUI) won the Absa Cape Epic 8-day mountain bike stage race, being the first South African to do so.

Stander had recently claimed 2nd overall in the 2012 UCI XCO World Cup Series.

Corine Howard, a close friend wrote the following tribute : “I grew up on the South Coast and knew Burry since primary school years. Burry and my brother were best friends and often trained together, both mountain biking and road cycling. Burry's mom, Mandie Stander ensured that we spent many afternoons at the Standers' small holding in Umtentweni and enjoyed many a cycle in the sugar cane fields together. Burry played an integral part in our lives. He was the ultimate example of a true hero, very disciplined in the sport he loved most, hard working and through his actions proved to every single person that knew him, whether ambitious, adventurous or drawn back and doubtful, that hard work and perseverance always pays off. My heart shattered at the news of my friend and brother's best friend's tragic passing. Burry had just opened his third cycle shop and was in the flair of his life. So young and talented; yet so humble. He did not deserve to have his life taken away so early, but I wish to see this tragic happening as a reminder that life is too short for regret and excuses. Burry, thank you for sharing your breathtaking life and its events with us and

all the wonderful memories you leave behind. Cherise, tannie Mandie, oom Charles, Duane and Charl, my deepest sympathy for your immense loss. I share in your heartache, but know this, Burry has proven himself a true hero and a legend for all generations to come�

Burry was loved and respected by tens of thousands of people all over the world and they will feel the pain of the family. Burry, we loved you in life and we will always love the legacy that you have left. You have been our finest mountain biker ever and one of the best in the world. May you Rest in Peace.

n Saturday 8th December, Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies hosted their 22nd Annual Christmas Luncheon for Senior Citizens at the Port Shepstone High School Hostel.

Approximately 80 senior folk from the Flower Foundation, Anerley Haven, Mbango Valley (Villa Bruno) and other residences in the area were transported to the event by Lions members. They were all treated to a superb live music ensemble courtesy of Sue Neilson on the keyboards and 3 members of the Dixie Jazz Band, namely, Ramsgate Lion Rob Henry on his

conta bass (Mabel), Ted Owen on the Clarinet and Brian Bucher on the banjo.

Peruvian school teacher Miguel Naranjo and Sue Neilson also serenaded the guests with Christmas Carols and other beautiful melodies.

The guests were served a delicious 3course Christmas lunch prepared by the Lion Ladies. Santa Clause, aka Lion Pieter Van Niekerk presented each guest with a sponsored Christmas gift bag filled with wonderful gifts. The whole event was, once again, a huge success thanks mainly to project coordinator Lion Hilton Horsley and his team of dedicated Lions and Lion Ladies. Port Shepstone Lions are

extremel y grateful to Sue Neilson for once a g a i n organising the live entertainment as well as Port Shepstone High School for allowing the Club to use their Hostel dining hall. The Lions would also like to thank the Hostel staff, Sunrise Farms, Michael Frey's Fresh Meat, Harbourview Superspar, Ola Ice Cream and Multicrop for their assistance and support.

uring the long weekend of 14 - 16 December, Harbourview Superspar kindly allowed Port Shepstone Lions to, once again, collect food donations for the needy. Members of the Club worked in shifts at both entrances in order to promote the project and provide descriptions of what groceries were required. The generosity of the public was extraordinary. Numerous shopping trolleys were filled and a number of cash donations were made.

The cash donations were utilised to purchase additional items required and food hampers were packed by members of the club for distributed to various needy families and institutions in the Port Shepstone area. An estimated R14 750.00 value of food stuffs or around 1 150kg's of food was donated by the public - a new record!

uring December, Sheppie Lions arranged a Christmas Party for Lawrence Doncabe's Sithunyuwe Bread of Life Organisation situated in deep rural Umzumbe.

At the event, 30 food parcels consisting of 1 x kg rice, 1 x kg sugar, 2 cans of tinned fish, 4 cans of bake beans, 1 x 750ml cooking oil, 1 x kg maize meal and 1 x kg dry beans were handed out to the needy. All the food for the parcels, the sweets, biscuits and cooldrinks for the party were provided from the Club’s food collection drive held at Harbourview Superspar. This initiative saved an amount of R2 600.00 which was originally designated for this project.

F

ounded in 1994, Reinhardt’s Place is a home for mentally impaired persons of all ages and is located in Pumula on the South Coast of Kwazulu-Natal. They cater for most categories of impairments including : Epilepsy, autism, Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other mild to profound mental conditions.

The staff at Reinhardt’s Place are experienced and trained in all its activities with hands-on care and are themselves parents of an autistic child named Reinhardt. They have empathy with both the parents and affected loved ones. Reinhardt’s Place is totally committed, supportive and equipped to meet the needs of the residents and their relatives and everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

During the month of December, the Port Shepstone Lions Club, in conjunction with the Master Builders Association sponsored and installed 3 heat pumps at the home. One of the pumps was for the bathrooms and general use, the other for the kitchen and a special chlorine resistant heat pump was installed for the therapeutic jacuzzi used for the treatment of some of the kids.

he International Peace Poster contest was started in 1988 by Lions Clubs International to create and foster a spirit of understanding amongst the people of the world. The contest gives young people from all over the world an opportunity to artistically convey their vision of peace. Lions Clubs around the world proudly sponsor the contest in local schools and youth groups. The Port Shepstone Lions Club is no exception. Each year’s contest consists of an original theme incorporating peace. The theme for the 2012-2013 contest was “Imagine Peace”.

One of the regular participating schools is Suid Natal Primary. Lion Danie Van Tonder represented the Port Shepstone Lions Club as a guest of honor to present the prizes and certificates of their Peace Poster Contest at their official school prize giving ceremony on Thursday 6th December. Lion Danie was given the opportunity to address the packed hall about Lions in general, including the peace poster project and thanked the school for supporting this excellent Lions initiative. The winning poster submitted by Charles Thompson was awarded 3rd place in the District Peace Poster Competition which included posters submitted by various Lions Clubs from around Kwazulu-Natal and the Freestate.

n appreciation of their assistance with serving meals at the 2012 Lions Show Comedy Evening and in recognition of their outstanding service to the youth of our community, the Port Shepstone Lions Club have donated R10 000-00 to YouthworX in Shelly Beach. 3rd Vice President and Community Services Director Lion Philip Bromley visited YouthworX, gave a short talk on Lions Clubs International, their aims and objectives and handed over the cheque to Youth Leader Justin Vermeulen. YouthworX will utilise these funds for their various youth upliftment initiatives.

ecember has come and gone and those members who supported the fundraising projects at the Old Pont Holiday Resort will confirm that this was an excellent initiative that involved plenty of fellowship and fun! Well done indeed to project convener, Lion President Jean Masson and his team which included Lion Mike Heathcoate (Pub and Shop Manager), Lion Bruce Plumbly (Fast Foods outlet) and Lion Mike Davidson (C.E.O./Janitor!). They all worked very long hours, sometimes under difficult circumstances and managed to pull off a winner.

The New Year’s Eve party was a great success and well attended. Sheppie Lions also attended and enjoyed their own special braai and festivities. Although the final figures have not yet been released, it appears that a great deal of money was raised via the various outlets for Lions community service projects.

n Saturday 8th December, Sheppie Lions and Lion Ladies gathered at Bela’s Restaurant at Spiller’s Wharf on the banks of the Umzimkulu River for their annual Club Christmas Party. Hosts Bela and Ralph Gallagher’s venue was superb and the food was delicious. A wonderful time was had by all who attended. The traditional Christmas gift swapping (thankless giving game!) took place followed by plenty of fellowship and dancing to music provided by Lion Denis Meyer. The Lion Ladies’ meals and the wine for the party was sponsored by the Club’s Bar Account.
