elcome to the 2012/2013 Lionistic Year!

Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies remain at the forefront of service within our community and our District. The membership of this club remains consistent and continues to grow which is a clear indication that this Club is attracting members with it’s ongoing projects and fellowship programs.

I continue to be extremely proud of my association with this Club. One of the Club’s greatest achievements has been it’s leadership. Ever since it’s inception in 1970, there have been a string of superb and dedicated presidents who have lead this Club with distinction. Many of our past leaders still remain dedicated members.

This past year was no exception. Lion President Kevin, your leadership, your commitment, your pleasant disposition and the example that you have set for all of us was inspirational. This dedication shows us all that you truly respect Lionism and the protocols of our Association – what a wonderful example for all of us to follow.

My wish is for this club to continue to be a guiding light for the rest of our District.

During the past few years, Port Shepstone Lions has been at the forefront of supporting District activities such as the Midyear Conference, annual training weekend and the Multiple District Convention. This year our club had the largest contingent of members present at the Multiple District Convention in Kimberley, and, as usual, the Sheppie Lions and Ladies were the life and soul of

We are fortunate to have a number of excellent Lions Clubs within our District, however, there are also quite a few clubs that are really struggling to survive and their future is very bleak. The recent membership survey that was doing the rounds throughout the country clearly indicated that the biggest threat to our Association is not the cost of Lionism, although this has become somewhat of a problem, it the fact that members are fighting amongst each other.

The Port Shepstone Lions club has a spirit of camaraderie that is the envy of many and this is why so few members ever leave the club and so many want to join. We have become a brotherhood of friends who work together and play together and we have successfully fulfilled our previous International President’s concept of “My Club, My Family” Whenever a member of this club experiences any problems, be it health or otherwise, we are all there to assist and support. This, my fellow Lions, is what Lionism is all about. I encourage you all to build on this and continue to be a guiding light to all Lions and clubs within our district.

Our Past International President, Wing Kun Tam’s motto for his year was “I Believe”.

Personally I have always and will always believe in the Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies clubs, I believe that there is no project that this club cannot successfully accomplish. I believe that this club is the way of the future, a club that has a mixture of young and not so young members, a Ladies Club that takes on many of the service projects and often shows more dedication than their male counterparts but is always there to support whenever needed, A legacy that will be the benchmark for the future generations of Lionism in District 410-C I believe in the Lions Club of Port Shepstone and am so grateful to be a part of this wonderful club.

Let’s build on this, increase our services to our Community and enjoy Lionism through our fellowship program.

ort Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies celebrated their 42nd Annual Induction Dinner at a glittering occasion on Saturday 30th June at the Umthunzi Boutique Hotel in Umtentweni. Outgoing President Kevin Ross paid tribute to both the Lions and Lion Ladies for their outstanding service to needy communities and individuals throughout the year. Lion Kevin then presented an Appreciation plaque, to Dr Trevor Steyn in recognition of his outstanding assistance with cataract operations for the underprivileged during the past 2 years.

The prestigious Lion of the Year Award was presented to Lion Bruce Plumbley and President's Appreciation Medals were presented to Past District Governor Denis Meyer and Lion Jean Masson. A Special Achievement Award medal was presented to Lion Philip Bromley for his outstanding efforts with Community Service Projects.

Other awards included : 20 years membership award to Lion Kelvin Hulley, 15 years membership awards to Lions Peter Stoppel and Alastair Warman, 10 years membership award to Lion (Dr) Fred Babumba and 5 years Membership Awards to Lions Anthony Hooper, Nico De Jong, Kenny Rolfe and Danie Van Tonder. Treasurer and Secretary medals were presented to Lions Richard Borradaile and Andre Beneke respectively. The Stirrer of the Year Award was presented to Lion Anthony Hooper who qualified without any real competition!

Past District Governor Denis Meyer formally inducted Lion Jean Masson as incoming President. In his acceptance speech, Lion Jean praised his predecessor for a very successful term as President and informed all members that, during his term of office, he will focus on improved service to our community and fellowship within the Club.

Outgoing Lion Lady President Diane Saunders presented her “Lion Lady Of the Year� Award to Lion Lady Marlene Van Tonder in recognition of her tireless efforts in helping the less fortunate. The award was

2012-2013 Presidential Theme International President Wayne A. Madden In A World of Service

I

n a world of need, there is someone to help. In a world of suffering, there is someone who cares. In a world of destruction, there is someone to provide relief. In a world of illiteracy, there is someone to teach. And in a world of service, there is one name that stands out among others – Lions Clubs International. That’s what we do. That’s what we have always done. It is our motto, and the reason we exist.

I grew up in Indiana, in the Midwest region of the United States. It is an area of rivers and streams, of farms and villages, covered bridges and sycamore trees, schools and fine universities, where the fall harvest is still one of the most important events of the year. Most of all it is home to people who still care about their neighbor’s welfare. It’s where I learned the value of giving back to the community.

But as we can see all over the world, our communities are facing new challenges ranging from hunger to a growing lack of opportunity, especially for young people.

And these needs seem to be getting bigger while resources are dwindling.

Certainly our service is needed more than ever.

If you’re from Indiana like me – or a dedicated Lion anywhere in the world – I know you wouldn’t stand for it. Lions are simply too big hearted and too compassionate to let problems like illiteracy and empty book shelves exist – not when there is so much we can do about it.

membership and build stronger clubs. How? Well, another inspiration from my Indiana roots comes from the world famous Indianapolis 500 auto race. Whether you are a fan of auto racing or not, I think everyone can appreciate the dedication, preparation, and TEAM work involved to enable a car, often exceeding 200 miles per hour, to complete the race incident free and win!!

Successful race teams employ a well thought out strategy, and devise a formula for excellence. My winning formula is: Dedication + Preparation + Teamwork = EXCELLENCE. From the club level to the district governor team, the Board and executive officers, we are a team of over 1.35 million, joining together for the purpose of serving others. In order for a team to be effective, each member of the team must work in unison, while fulfilling their individual role. No one team member is more important than the other.

It All Starts With Dedication To Service Lions are dedicated to providing service. That renowned dedication will help us in everything we do – including our continued participation in the Global Service Action Campaigns of engaging youth (August), working with the blind and visually impaired (October), feeding the hungry (December and January) and working to improve the environment (April) to protecting 150 million children from measles in our new partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

In addition, I am asking Lions to participate in a year-long initiative called the Reading Action Program – a campaign to improve literacy rates and promote reading.

So my theme for this year - “In A World of Service” - calls on Lions to not only celebrate our world of service but to expand our impact, rising up to meet new challenges.

Let’s Remember Service Begins With Each of Us

To do that, we need to grow our

We don’t just serve, we serve with dedication and passion because we have compassion for others. Lions care about other people. Whenever possible, we lend a hand to those in need – not just through our multitude of service projects, but in our day-to-day activities.

WE SERVE because we comprehend that we have a responsibility to be of service to others. Compassion is trying to understand someone else's circumstances along with a willingness to reach out to them. Just feeling sorry is not compassion, and it’s not the Lions’ way. We look at the world from the other person's perspective, rather than our own.

Apart from our multitude of projects, it is also important to keep in mind that even small gestures, at the right time, can mean the world to someone. Making yourself available for someone to talk to, being patient, sharing what you've learned from overcoming imilar problems, running an errand, or giving someone a ride, are just examples of what you can do.

It's not difficult to show compassion. All you have to do is listen to other people and be sensitive to their needs. You can bring a smile to a stranger. Hold a door open. Let someone in front of you when in line. Help carry packages.

There is no act too small to be helpful.

When we show compassion, we help alleviate someone's suffering. It’s that simple. Remember – the more you put in, the more you get back.

ur 26th Lions Show has come and gone and, by all acounts, was once again a resounding success.

Along with the Trade Expo featuring hundreds of businesses and exhibitions and the exciting Fun Fair for the kids, there was an action packed entertainment line-up filled with some of South Africa’s top performers. This project remains our biggest fundraiser and is without a doubt, one of the biggest Lions projects within our Multiple District.

The show started off on Thursday the 26th of July with the “Lions Laugh Out Loud” comedy evening featuring top South African comedian Tumi Morake and live cabaret act "Three Tonnes of Fun". The Beer Tent was packed and the atmosphere was electric. Tumi proved to be one of the best comedians that we have had at the Show and her supporting act kept our feet tapping until late into the night.

On Friday the 27th we had an awesome line-up which started off at 16:00 with the FMX Dance Party in the main arena. There were MX offroad biking, freestyle biking and BMX's. This event was accompanied by music and light featuring Digital Kaos, Veranda Panda, Rowan Clelland & DJ Dino Bravo. This was followed by the traditional party night in the beer tent.

On Saturday 28th the main arena was, once again, filled with fun & action. The Show was officially opened by Hibiscus Coast Mayor Cynthia Mcwebu and speeches were delivered by District Governor Adrian Barnes and Club President Jean

Masson. This was followed by the prizegiving ceremony for our exhibitors.

At 15:00 a really enjoyable Bollywood Extravaganza featuring multinational

cast and Bollywood star King of Entertainment Rajiv Mothie was presented. They thrilled the packed Beer Tent with non-stop music and dance.

This was followed by live rugby on the big screens where locals revelled in the stunning victory of the Sharks over the Stormers.

From 19:00, "Wolfie" opened the evening with his great party music which had everyone dancing and enjoying themselves. At 22:00 the famous Dr Victor and the Rasta Rebels performed live and the party accelerated. Everyone had a really wonderful time, Lions included. He is indeed a really great entertainer and his music is legendary.

On Sunday 29th, audiences were treated to a really enjoyable High School Talent show which was followed by Sorina "Die Flooze", star of the famous local TV series "7de Laan" in the main beer tent.

The day ended off with us Lions gathering for our traditional group photo and celebrating yet another successful show.

Kudos to Show Convener Bruce P l u m b l e y, E n t e r t a i n m e n t coordinator James Carlson, bookings secretary Jane Massey and Lion President Jean Masson for their exceptional input. All the Lions and Lion Ladies as well as the various helpers worked extremely hard and did our Club proud during the entire event.

I have been part of Directors for one or two years. Have hosted a number of Golf Charity days over the last 10 years or so. At one stage I was the custodian of Constitutional and Legal matters but this item was removed from the Agenda having been abrogated by disuse. Have advised and represented PS Lions on a number of contentious issues - the level of my success or lack thereof has been a subject of conjecture. All said and done I am a DJ of note!!

Hobbies : Golf, Sport fanatic esp. Rugby and Soccer - I never walk alone...; music and interacting with people in general.

Bad Habits : Many I guess but I don't listen enough and get too passionate at times!

Your philosophy on life : To be content and happy. With my looks [droopy eye] and shortcomings I continually have to work at this! Music and working on a sense of humour [not easy at my age] does seem to help.

Now it goes by the short and snappy name of Lions Show - and it wears an equally modern look, appealing to a whole new generation of show visitors. The annual show has, for the past 15 years, been run by the Port Shepstone Lions Club and held at the Municipal Show Grounds in Port Shepstone.

It was the brainchild of Lion Louis Marx, who convened the show for a number of years. All the proceeds of this event are ploughed back into local community assistance projects.

In 1989 the show was incorporated into the Hibiscus Festival programme. What a good move that was. July holidaymakers loved it and the show has grown exponentially since then. The Lions' Show 1989 was the first of many record breakers, with 20 000 festival followers flocking to the show. The arena events were the best the Hibiscus Coast had ever seen. They included a brilliant 'foot-up' motor cycle display by Natal Trials Riders, working dog trials with a delightful border collie herding a flock of geese, an equestrian event - the OK Grand Prix - and a performance by the pipes and drums of the Natal Mounted Rifles. The highlight of the Show was the action packed programme for the Saturday afternoon. After the newly crowned Hibiscus Queen arrived to welcome guests at the show, Oribi Commando carried out a simulated area patrol. Things hotted up when the patrol was 'ambushed' and a full scale battle broke out. Thanks to the then new Rinkaals ambulance the 'injured' were soon ferried to safety.

Perhaps the most exciting event that afternoon was the South African Police Service's Reaction Unit's simulated bus hijacking.

The high point of this breathtaking presentation was when a helicopter successfully placed two men on the roof of the moving bus.

The exciting arena programme set a precedent, but the Lions were more than equal to the challenge. The events simply get better every year. The trade expo section has grown enormously too and has become more and more professional over the years. It is now recognised as the perfect showcase for Hibiscus Coast businesses and stands are always fully booked well before the show.

The judging of the stands is performed by an independent panel of judges. Trophies and certificates are awarded to stallholders for the following categories : Best Overall Stand, Best Outdoor Stand, Best Indoor Stand, Best Marketed Stand, Best Motor Dealer, Best Local Business, Best Small Business, Best School Stand. Coca Cola Fortune have also generously sponsored the floating trophy for the Best Small Business Stand.

Our Newest Melvin Jones Fellow also donated new laser printers to various Lions Shows and Lions Golf days since 2007.

He organised Unitrans as the main sponsor for the 2009 Lions Show and Kyocera SA as main sponsor for the 2011 and 2012 Lions Shows.

Lion Danie been running Lions Bingo for the past 3 years.

ion Danie Van Tonder was awarded with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award during the official opening ceremony at the 2012 Lions Show.

Lion Danie has been married to Marlene for 28 years. They have three children, Dewald, Danielle and J.C. They moved to Port Shepstone 14 years ago.

Lion Danie’s first exposure to our Club was when he attended the Sheppie Charter Dinner in 2007 as a guest.

Shortly thereafter he was sworn in as a member and became a Club director that same year.

Lion Danie was awarded Lion of the Year in 2008. He was inducted as Club President in 2009.

His various Lionistic awards include a Certificate of Appreciation and pin from Club President Pieter van Niekerk, Certificate of Appreciation and pin from International President Eberhard J Wirts, during Lions Year 2009-2010 and 100% attendance every year since 2007.

Since their induction into the Port Shepstone Lions Club, both Lion Danie and Lion Lady Marlene have not missed a single Multiple District Convention, Midyear Conference, Charter Dinner, Club Induction Dinner or Leadership Retreat weekend.

Lion Danie was also Convener of Leadership Retreat for 2 years.

He regularly sponsors all printing for various Lions projects and functions, including Shelly Beach and Hibberdene Lions Clubs. He has donated Photocopiers to Angels Wings, and Hibberdene Lions Club eye clinic. He has

Together with Lion Lady Marlene they started the Ladies Morning Tea in 2010 to raise funds for the underprivileged kids at Suid Natal Primary School. With these funds they go to Durban for 2 days and purchase Christmas presents and stationary for the kids.

2012 CATARACT CAMP In 2012, after hearing of the huge backlog of state patients in need of cataract operations, Lion Danie became involved with UGU health dept, various companies and other organizations to put together a cataract camp for a week at GJ Crooks Hospital. He approached Lions District 410C to assist with the funding of R40 000 to fly 4 ophthalmic surgeons from India to complete 200 cataract operations. He assisted in the pre screening of patients at the Civic Center and GJ Crooks Hospital. He arranged transport with the assistance of LP Jean Masson for all 23 “Lions patients” organised by various Lions Clubs around The District. During the cataract camp he was assisted by DC Jane Wicks and Lion Lynn Botha (Scottburgh Lions also assisted) in helping with paperwork, dressing patients, feeding patients etc etc… He also ended up in theatre where he assisted in moving equipment from one operating table to the other as there was a shortage of staff and equipment. After the surgery he delivered special post op medication to the homes of the “Lions patients” and a free post op checkup with a private eye specialist Dr Trevor Steyn to avoid patients traveling back to GJ Crooks Hospital.
