The monthly bingo was well supported again. There were 32 oldies and because it was their Christmas Bingo they had some extra treats and entertainment.

Thank you again to the ladies who supplied the tasty eats. Also to Anita who stood in for Myrna because she had to be elsewhere. As usual we can always rely on you Anita, Thank you.

The Pont Fundraiser is well under way and we plan to open officially on Saturday. We had a trial run last weekend and. Apart from the weather all ran smoothly. The New Years Eve plans are going well and posters are being put out there so that event should go well.

The Suid Natal Christmas party was a huge success again. Every year we supply gifts for some less fortunate children. The ladies went shopping to buy the gifts and a wrapping party was held at the clubhouse. Thank you to everyone who helped. The party was held in the school hall.

What an eye opener. We just have so much to be grateful for. I would really like to do more for these children.

They loved their gifts and it was a privilege working with the headmaster and staff at the school.

Andre made a great Father Christmas and the giggles and laughter from the 68 children ranging from 6 years to 14 years was very heartwarming.

So it looks like we will be very busy in December too with the Pont, the oldies Christmas lunch at Port Shepstone High School and our own Christmas party at Bella's. So until next month I wish everyone a wonderful festive season. Look after yourselves and keep safe.

ion John Saunders, a great Lions Leader, a true friend and a colleague in Lionism, has served as a dedicated member of the Port Shepstone Lions Club for the past 16 years.

Lion John was inducted into the Port Shepstone Lions Club in 1996 and sponsored by Lion John Barrow. Over the years he has served in the following positions at Club, District and Multiple District level : 2001/2002 - Club Treasurer 2002/2003 - Club Treasurer 2003/2004 - Club President 2004/2005 - Zone Chairman (Zone 6) 2006/2007 - Zone Chairman (Zone 6) 2007/2008 - Region Chairman (Zones 2&4) 2008/2009 - Region Chairman (Zones 2&4) 2008/2009 - 2nd Vice President & Fundraising Director 2009/2010 - 2nd Vice District Governor - District 410-C 2009/2010 - Multiple District Chairman Information Technology.

In recognition of his outstanding service, John was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship by the Port Shepstone Lions Club in 2006 and a Louis Halse Fellowship in 2007.

One of John’s greatest contributions to Lionism in Southern Africa was his involvement with information technology.

For almost a decade, John and his company, Venturenet, sponsored and hosted the domains and web space for literally hundreds of Lions web sites in Southern Africa. These included our

Multiple District web site, District 410-A, 410-C, 412 (Zimbabwe), Port Shepstone Lions Club, our annual Lions Show as well as numerous other Clubs within the MD. Venturenet also hosted all the mailing lists for our Multiple District for a number of years which made a significant contribution towards improving the lines of communication within our MD. For his fine efforts, John was presented with a Lions Clubs International Foundation Honours Roll in 2008 by the MD410 Council of Governors.

John represented the Port Shepstone Lions Club at the following Conventions : 2004 Lions Clubs International Convention – Hong Kong China 2001 MD410 Convention - East London 2003 MD410 Convention - Worcester 2004 MD410 Convention - Illovo Beach 2005 MD410 Convention - Swakopmund 2006 MD410 Convention - Port Elizabeth 2007 MD410 Convention - Boksburg 2009 MD410 Convention - Oudtshoorn 2010 MD410 Convention - Worcester John also served on the following Committees and sub-committees : Annual Lions South Coast Show (2000 2012) Membership Committee (2005) Multiple District Convention Sub – Committee (2008) Midyear Sub Committee (2005, 2009) District 410-C Cabinet (2004 – 2011) District 410-C MERL Team (2009/2010) In addition, Lion John Convened the Lions Show in 2003, Convened the District 410-C Midyear Conference in 2009 and the District Training Weekend in 2010.

John and Diane’s home was also a regular

venue for hosting Youth Exchange students and a number of other club events.

Aside from his extraordinary commitment and leadership, John is a truly down to earth person whose greatest joy as a Lion was to serve those less fortunate. His ever present sense of humour and practical jokes contributed greatly to the fellowship at both Club and District level. John was truly a part of the Sheppie Lions family and many of us have witnessed his sons, Craig, Ryan and Dean grow from mischievous toddlers to strapping young men (of course the mischievous streak never disappeared owing to their father’s strong influence!) Lion Lady Diane, John’s Partner in Service was equally as involved with our Lion Ladies Club, She served two terms as Ladies President and her tireless contributions and involvement made a huge impact on community service.

John’s resignation from the Port Shepstone Lions Club is indeed very sad news, however, we wish him and his family everything of the best for the future. Their legacy will live on and they will be remembered as an extraordinary family who touched so many lives, including our own.

ast International President Kay Fukushima was Called to Higher Service on 1st December. For those of you who c a n r e m e m b e r, P I P K a y represented Lions Clubs International at the Multiple District 410 "Shaka" Convention held in Durban in 2005. He was a wonderful speaker with a tremendous sense of humour. He was also a great supporter of our Multiple District.

Kay Fukushima, lived in Sacramento, California, USA and was elected to serve as president of The International Association of Lions Clubs at the association's 85th International Convention in Osaka, Japan, July 8-12, 2002.

Past President Fukushima was in the insurance industry.

A member of the Sacramento Senator Lions Club since 1965, Past President Fukushima held many positions within the association, including club president, zone chairperson, deputy district governor, district governor in 1978-79 and vice chairperson of MD 4 (California and Nevada, USA). He served as an international director on the association's board of directors from 1986-88. Past President Fukushima was a member of the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum Planning Committee from 1988-91 and is the author of the forum operational manual. He also served as a District Governors-

elect school group leader from 1994-99 and as a member of the original Leadership Institute Faculty from 199497, the first three years of the institute.

Additionally, he served as general convention chairperson in 1988, Denver, Colorado, USA, and made many major changes to the convention.

He also was an original member of the North American Membership Committee.

Often, Past President Fukushima had taken the initiative to advance the Lions in his area and around the world.

Through his work, he initiated the first MD 4 Leadership retreat, helped to create the first MD 4 Leader (a 12-page regular newspaper), chaired the MD 4 Lions Convention and established the MD 4 Lioness Program. He also produced and directed the MD 4 orientation and recruiting video titled "And the Lions Roar"; chaired and developed the MD 4 White Cane promotional program; and developed, created and tested the MD 4 base membership program called "Operation Lionism."

Past President Fukushima received numerous awards in recognition of his service to the association, including life membership, the 100% Club President Award, the 100% District Governor Award, three Extension Awards, four Lion of the Year awards, a Master Key Award, four International President Leadership Medals, eight Presidential Certificates of Appreciation,

11 Presidential Medals and the Ambassador of Good Will Award, the highest honor the association bestows upon its members. He was also a progressive Helen Keller Fellow and a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow.

In addition to his Lion activities, Past President Fukushima was involved with the Sacramento Zoo and a number of community youth recreation programs. He was also active in various professional associations.

or a number of years, The Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies have hosted a monthly Bingo session for our senior citizens at their Lions' Den in Umtentweni. On Saturday 24th November, the Club hosted their annual Christmas Bingo party which was attended by 35 of their regular patrons. Lion members used their own vehicles to transport the senior citizens to and from the Lions Clubhouse. They were all treated to tea/Champaign, cake and sandwiches and enjoyed live entertainment courtesy of Lion (Dr) Hilton Horsley and Mrs Ria Hackland. Each of the guests were also presented with a Lions Christmas Cake specially iced by Lion Lady President Myrna Masson. Many thanks to Lions Alastair Warman, Hilton Horsley, Alister Love, Kenny Rolfe, Mervin Curnow, Nico De Jong, Dale McGarry, Martin Rundle and Lion Ladies Bondie Horsley, Irene Love, Bev Rolfe, Lyn Curnow, Anita Hulley and Marcia McGarry for giving up their time and making this very special event possible.

or the past 6 years, The Port Shepstone Lions have “adopted� the AmaHlube Creche which is situated in the rural area outside Marburg near Port Shepstone. The Club has already sponsored a mobile unit which houses the kitchen and eating area as well as groceries for their meals. Most of the children attending this creche are from extremely poor families and many are orphans. On Wednesday 28th November, Lions Andre Beneke and Philip Bromley visited the creche on behalf of the Club. Lion Andre, suitably dressed at Father Christmas, handed out presents to all the delighted children. For many of these children, this will be the only gift that they will receive this Christmas. The Children were also provided with sweets, cool drinks and cakes which were provided by the Port Shepstone Lions. The sheer delight on each of their faces made this project very worthwhile.

A

nother school that receives regular support from the Port Shepstone Lions Club is the Suid Natal Primary School which is sutuated in Oslo Beach, Port Shepstone. A large number of the pupils at this school come from poverty stricken families and many will not receive presents this Christmas. The Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies have been visiting this school for a number of years now and providing the children with gifts and treats to celebrate the Season of Goodwill and provide some sort of comfort in these very difficult times. Once again Lion Andre Beneke donned his Santa Clause outfit and presented gifts to all the pupils. Lion Anthony Hooper and Lion Ladies Myrna Masson, Anita Hulley, Candice Hooper and Esme Bromley were also present to assist with the Christmas Party.

t’s all systems go at the Old Pont Holiday Resort in Port Edward. Sheppie Lions will be running the Pub, Shop and Take-Away as from the beginning of December until further notice. The Resort has been revamped by the new Consortium who have taken over the lease and is fully geared up for the December Holiday Season. A group of Sheppie Lions and Ladies camped at the Old Pont during the weekend of 24/25 November and gave the Pub a “test run”.

The event was very enjoyable with live rugby on the new flat screen TV, lots of laughs with the karaoke and plenty of dancing. Quite a few local campers decided to join in which resulted in the party carrying on until the early hours of the following morning. There is plenty of signage advertising our various Lions projects. The planned New Years Eve party promises to be a great success and should generate much needed funds for charity.

heppie Lions and Ladies, together with Port Shepstone & Margate Round Table, Port Shepstone, Margate & Uvongo Rotary and Margate Lions participated in a very enjoyable Variety Show which was held at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre. The Sheppie Lions Skit was a tribute to our Natal Sharks rugby team. Our Lion Ladies were the rugby players and the guys were suitably attired as the legendary “Flashers”. The skit also included a “Shark” (Lion Peter Mc Killen) chasing a “Banana” (Lion Kelvin Hulley). Although we were not judged the best skit, we certainly generated the most laughter from the packed audiences during each of the 4 nights. Lion Mervin Curnow’s tequila shots prior to each performance certainly helped ease the nerves! The event was a huge success. This great initiative and the positive interaction between the various service clubs generated much needed funds for various local charities.
