S

eptember has been a hectic month for Sheppie Lions and it is once again very encouraging to see how many members supported the many events and service projects.

Starting with fellowship, the Italian Feast put together by Lion Andre Beneke and assisted by many of the ladies attracted 37 people. And what a feast it was, with food coming out all evening. Our resident chefs Andre, Anita and Irene made sure no one left with space for another morsel.

Well done guys!

Our annual ECL weekend, co-ordinated

by Lion Hilton Horsley and Lion Lady Bondi Horsley, was another huge success. Every year our club hosts 40 newly elected leaders from Port Shepstone High School. These are the leaders for the following year. Anerley Camp was the venue again. The wet weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of the many members who gave their all to ensure that the students gained the knowledge and expertise that exists within our club. They were lectured, enlightened and entertained about their roles as ECL’S and life in general. I must extend a huge thank you to the ladies, who once again worked long hours in the

Umhlalo Lodge was the venue for the formal evening when everyone had to dress accordingly in formal wear. We saw students transform from muddy and wet obstacle course participants to wearing elegant black tie and evening dresses. We were honoured with the presence of Wayne Riddin, our guest speaker for the evening. Wayne’s inspiration and passion for our youth had us all in awe. He is a true example of success achieved by hard work, discipline and dedication. It is a honour to have this strong legendary connection to our club.

On Thursday it was a privilege to have Council Chairman Paul Brauteseth attend our meeting. It is the first time a Council Chairman has visited our club. We were also extremely happy to have Zone Chairman Keith Murgatroyd attend the same meeting.

Lion Alistair Warman managed to stay awake to cook delicious boerewors rolls after the meeting. These were enjoyed by all present.

Also on Thursday the Multicrop bus transported 15 cataract patients to GJ Crookes hospital where they underwent surgery. Lion Andre accompanied them and gave a report at the meeting of this amazing organization and generosity of the doctors involved. Every operation was done for free.

It seems we are in for a busy October too. So until the next newsletter I wish you all a pleasant month of service.

he second annual Port Shepstone Lions' Medieval Feast will take place on Saturday 10th November 2012 at the Mbango Quarry in Port Shepstone (behind the Borough Fields). Wayne Riddin A Swimming Legend... t was a great honour for for the Port Shepstone Lions Club to have one of South Africa’s top swimming coaches as our guest speaker at the recent Leadership Retreat Formal Dinner held at Zizi’s Restaurant. Wayne Riddin is the brother of both Lion Lady President Myrna Masson and Lion Lady Secretary Jacqui Riddin.

National Senior Schools team to compete at Shanghai in 1998. ! appointed as South African Swimming Head Coach from 1999 to 2001 including Olympic Games Swimming Team Manager and Head Coach in 2000.

After 10 years of competitive swimming, Wayne obtained a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in chemistry with a higher diploma in education at the Natal University. After teaching at Alexandra Boys High, Maritzburg College, St Charles and Westville Boys High, Wayne opted for full time coaching in Pietermaritzburg producing swimmers who qualified for the 1992 Olympics.

Wayne coached, co-coached and accompanied the likes of Penny Heynes, Ryk Neethling, Darrian Townsend, Roland Schoeman, Cameron Van Den Bergh and Chad Le Clos to the Olympics.

He has continued to produce champions from Natal age group level to Olympic gold medalists.

In addition he has been: ! selected as one of the coaches

for the SA Junior Team which competed at the Africa Junior Championships in Cairo in 1994 ! appointed head coach for the National Short Course Team to go to the World Short Course Championships in Rio De Janiero in 1995 and Gothenburg in 1997. ! appointed National Director of coaching and development by Swimming South Africa at the end of 1997, which he declined because it meant he would be unable to continue squad coaching. ! appointed as coach for the

Wayne spends much of his time overseas visiting swimming camps and institutions with groups of swimmers. These include Stanford and Texas Universities to name just two.

In addition to his coaching Wayne is the Race Director and Organiser of the world famous Midmar Mile of which he himself has won twice. Wayne has led this operation to a level unprecedented in the open water swimming world. Its operations are amongst the most professional in the sport and its budget is the largest in the world.

He also serves on the board of directors of the International Marathon Swimming Hall Of Fame where he is the Africa co-vice president.

Wa y n e w a s r e c o g n i z e d a n d addressed the 2012 Global Open Water Swimming Conference and the International Marathon Swimming Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremonies on the RMS Queen Mary on 22nd of this

month in Long Beach California.

While doing all this Wayne also ran the Comrades Marathon more than 10 times achieving silver medals. He won the Midmar Mile twice and has competed in the Duzi Canoe Marathon many times together with umteen triathlons and biathlons resulting in him holding the position of Iron Man title for 9 years in a row.

Many top achievers refer to Wayne as their idol and their guardian angel. This is because he lives for his swimmers and gives his all so that they can achieve their dreams.

Both Myrna and Jacqui are extremely proud of their brother Wayne and the members of the Port Shepstone Lions Club, together with their guests, the Executive Council of Learners, were very inspired by his words of motivation and encouragement.

Wayne is a truly extraordinary individual who sets a wonderful example for us all!

ort Shepstone Lions hosted their 26th Annual Leadership Retreat from 14-16 September at Camp Anerley. 40 Grade 11 pupils, recently selected for the Port Shepstone High School Executive Council of Learners (previously known as the Prefects Council) attended the camp.

The full weekend program commenced shortly after they arrived at the camp on Friday with a talk on Lions Clubs International presented by Past District Governor Denis Meyer. The group was thereafter broken up into a number of colour coded teams and took part in team-building exercises. Later in the afternoon, the Retreat was officially opened

by Club President Jean Masson and attended by many Lions and Lion Ladies who afterwards enjoyed supper with the ECL members. After supper the group participated in a very enjoyable ice breaking exercise before heading off to bed.

The group had an early rise on the Saturday morning for exercises and a delicious breakfast prepared by the Lion Ladies. Then it was down to business, with lectures on leadership theory, communication, goal setting, innovative engineering, people to people relationships and conflict management presented by Pastor Trevor Downham, Miss Kerry Mc Killen, Lions Rob Bing, Philip Bromley and Peter Mc Killen. The afternoon session was dominated by the strenuous, very

wet and very muddy obstacle course which was marshalled with much laughter by all Lions present.

When the Grade 11's arrived at the Lions' Formal Dinner, held at Umhlalo Lodge in Umtentweni on the Saturday night, they were almost unrecognisable. The mud stains had been replaced with glittering make-up and elegant evening wear, and the dirty shorts had become smart suits.

The guest speaker, Mr Wayne Riddin, gave a motivational talk on his experiences with the South African Olympic Swimming Team at the recent London Olympics and inspired both the ECL and Lions in attendance.

Wa y n e R i d d i n i s a c o a c h , administrator and the race director of the Midmar Mile, the world's largest competitive open water swim that attracts nearly 20,000 swimmers of all ages and abilities every year. A former winner of the Midmar Mile himself, Ridden has led the operations to a level unprecedented in the open water swimming world. Its operations are among the most professional in the sport and its budget is the largest in the world. He also serves on the board of directors of the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame where he is the Africa Co-Vice President.

On Sunday, the group, once again had an early start for exercise and a delicious breakfast prepared by the Lion Ladies. Then it was on to morning devotions with Mr Damian Williams and more lectures on motivation/choices presented by Lion Hilton Horsley, ECL in action and their evaluation of the weekend. After lunch the group participated in a very

enjoyable and challenging “amazing race” together with many Lions and Lion Ladies who acted as marshals throughout the course.

The Retreat was, once again, a huge success and hats off to Course Convener, Lion Hilton Horsley and his dedicated team of Lions and Lion Ladies. The entire project was fully funded by the Club's charity account and with generous sponsorship and support provided by Harbour View Superspar, Waltons Stationary, Lindsay Eggs, Mndeni Meat, Sunrise Farms, C a m p A n e r l e y, L e a f Technologies, Malundi Bus Services, Justin Hinchliff Ice cream, Coca Cola, Kuku Snacks and Zizi’s Restaurant.

Leadership development of our youth is one of the core projects of Lions Clubs International and this project is one of the signature service projects of the Port Shepstone Lions Club.

Port Shepstone Lions’ Annual Schools Talent Competition

T

he Port Shepstone Lions Club hosted their very first Schools Talent Competition at the 2012 Lions Show. The competition was held in the main entertainment tent during the morning of Sunday 29th July at the showgrounds. A total of 19 entries from 6 local High schools, namely Creston College, Marburg Secondary, Merlewood Secondary, Port Shepstone High, Hoerskool Suid Natal and Port Shepstone Secondary, participated. They all provided the delighted audience with an array of music, song and dance routines. This was a truly enjoyable experience for those who attended and it was clear that the participants had dedicated a great deal of time

and effort into their respective performances.

After much deliberation, Judges Elvie Venter, Ria Hackland and James Carlson finally selected the following winners : 1st Prize – Marburg Secondary. Their group “Outlaws”, consisting of Siphokuhle Quambisa, Hopewell Nguni, Pardon Kapaso, Diligent Belfour and Nomsa Nzama performed a Hip Hop Dance and were awarded a brand new printer for the school, sponsored by Leaf Technologies, Port Shepstone, a R50000 cash prize and a Coo-ee Hamper.

2nd Prize – Creston College.

Their group “The BeatBreakers”, was a marimba band with a mix of Parlatones songs. They were awarded with a R300-00 cash prize and a Coo-ee Hamper.

3rd Prize – Port Shepstone High School. Learner Sean Wood performed the song “Stairway To Heaven” on his lead guitar. He was awarded with a R200-00 cash prize and a Coo-ee Hamper.

Port Shepstone Lions’ Donation to Quadriplegic Port Shepstone Lions recently donated a wheelchair to quadriplegic Brightman Mnyandu of Umzumbe. Mr Mnyandu was referred to the Club by Dr Andre Nel. Prior to receiving the wheelchair, his family and friends had to physically carry him around. Brightman was extremely happy with his new found mobility and independence.

The winning prize of a brand new printer sponsored by Leaf Technologies was handed over by their Regional Director, Danie Van Tonder to School Principal Mr Vallee last Friday. Also present at the handover were Lion Bruce Plumbley, 2012 Lion Show Convener and the school’s contestants. The Schools Talent Show was organised and run by Lion Lady Bondi Horsley. Prize money was sponsored by the Lions, Hairy Munster Productions sponsored the technical support and Coo-ee sponsored the hampers. Port Shepstone Lions plan to hold this event Annually at their Show and involve as many local schools as possible.

Sheppie Lions were invited by the organisers of the 2012 Heritage Day Celebrations at Spiller’s Wharf to braai boerie rolls and raise funds for charity. Lion Alastair Warman jumped at the opportunity and arranged a team of Lions to assist him. The event was well supported and the venue, on the banks of the beautiful Umzimkulu River, was breathtaking. Members who participated enjoyed a great day of braaiing and fellowship together with fellow participants from Ezemvelo Wildlife and Winner Kayak.

The celebrations carried on well into the night.

More Cataract Operations at GJ Crookes

O

n 27 September Lions Danie Van Tonder and Andre Beneke transported 15 patients to GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh to undergo free cataract operations courtesy of the UGU Health Department and a number of doctors who had travelled from India to perform free cataract surgeries.

Their day started very early at 05:00 and they only returned after 19:00 in the evening. Of the 15 patients, 11 have now received operations on both their eyes thanks to the tireless efforts of the Sheppie Lions team.

As Lion Andre stated at the Club Meeting - it was truly an “eye opening” experience!

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Dear Sir, The Town Council approved the following resolution : “That the Council places on record its thanks and appreciation to the Republic

Festival Committee for the efficient manner in which it planned and organised the Festival celebrations held on 23rd May 1981, and that its appreciation also be conveyed to those individuals and organisations (including schools, service clubs and the Oribi Commando) that took an active part in helping to make the celebrations an outstanding success”.

As always, the versatility of Lions (duly assisted by Lionesses) came to the fore, and I would say that the excellence of the fare that you provided contributed in no small measure to making the day the outstanding success

Lion President Edward Kemp has suggested that consideration should be given to making this an annual event. I have no doubt that this is an excellent idea but whether or not everyone will cooperate as closely as they did on this particular occasion is something that I am not sure of - it is certainly worth thinking about.

Lion Mike Rodda’s 80th Birthday

O

ur longest serving member, Lion Mike Rodda, recently turned 80 years young! On Saturday 29 September, his coming of age was celebrated in grand style at a special birthday luncheon held at Harrison’s Restaurant on St Michael’s Beach. Sheppie Lions and Ladies attended en-masse and celebrated this very special milestone with their beloved collegue. Lion Lady Yvonne Rodda did a sterling job in organising the party and a number of Mike’s life long buddies travelled from far and wide to be there with him. Lion Mike has been a member of Lions Clubs International for the past 35 years and transferred to Port Shepstone from the Cowies Hill Lions Club a few years ago. We wish Mike many happy returns!

And, once again, Alastair had a little sleep!

W

e were honoured to be visited by two very distinguished guests at our September Club Meeting. Council Chairman Paul Brauteseth, together with Lion Secretary Ernest Strecker from Shelly Beach Lions and our Zone Chairman, Keith Murgatroyd from Kokstad attended the meeting. Both Council Chairman Paul and Zone Chairman Keith addressed the Club and expressed their appreciation to members for the excellent services that they are providing to their community and for being a wonderful example to the District.
