RESURRECTION OF THE STAGE The stage named as Dajiale Theater is originally created by self-organized art performances ever since 1986, its name literally means “everybody be happy together”. It is regarded as a public symbol in Shenzhen during 1980-1990‘s, which helped to establish a close relationship between the migrant workers and their new home. In order to keep the memory the theater, the renovation of the stage kept its original orientation and characteristics. The stage still open to the city and public, meanwhile, an interior audience hall is attached, which makes it a professional repertory theater. 3

YOUTH CULTURE HABITAT These group of buildings eventually blend themselves into the city as a whole. The open space that links the city and Lizhi park to the southwest suggests intersections among different group of people, which will enhance spontaneous public events. The superimposition of various activities in old and new buildings would successfully create colorful urban life experience. 5

NODE AMONG THE 'POKECTS' Located right next to the planned cosmos-like commercial pocket, the 700m2's 'cultural space' is proposed as a node which establishes connections between the huge pockets, the small building stands right on the urban intersections instead of stands alone, thus providing it with authentic and lively public characteristics. This particular urban strategy can also vitalize the surrounding urban space. 15

THE SPACE CURATOR The building is composed of a multi-function gallery, a bookstore and cafe, the overpasses connects it with its gigantic neigbours. The hall is equiped with a mechanical floor to make maximum use of its limited area, providing specific space that suits different events. 16

ROTATABLE PLATFORM CLOSEUP

TECTONICS 'BUILDING MACHINE' The very constructing technique, material, and details are inspired by industrial elements and productions, which once represents the spirit of man-made place of its site. Especially, the platform is designed as mechanical system that can be rotated in respond to different events, which makes the maximum use of its limited architecture area, and turn the building into a “machine” for exhibition and performance. 17

TOWER-SLAB SYSTEM FOR HOUSING ESTATES 2017 SPRING STUDIO PROJECT

SEARCH SPACE I / Field Aggregation Slabs were the first phase of house developments in Shatin, Hong Kong in 1960s. This old type of Shatin housing create an open ground floor condition and self-contained community with amenities and shopping facilities. In late 1970s, dense towers started dominating the new generation of residential buildings. Towers constructions in recent decades have been intended to provide more housing units for the strikingly increased population in Shatin. However, the loss of slab type has led to disappearance of a unique community life framed by slab space. Different from the pervasive tower plus podium type, slabs allow more dynamic street life and spontaneous events. As the old types are about to reach their 50-year’s lifespan and will be reconstructed in the near future, we believe worth the effort to re-evaluate the slab type, and question the ‘either slab or tower’ condition, in hope of finding new housing types that offers adequate density and provide both living and urban space of quality. SEARCH SPACE II / Vertical Stacking The plans are also generated with a simple search space. They are later selected and grouped into six basic chunks, each can be considered a unique small community. It is flexible to stack them vertically to form towers and slabs, and this leads to a number of variations at building scale. As for criteria, slabs are intentionally maintained simple and highlighting horizontal lines; meanwhile, chunks with less private outdoor space will be designated with more public space. In addition, certain chunks are especially suitable for connecting space, and therefore always appear at the joints of slabs and towers. Based on, the system generates plenty of possibilities and variations, yet can be very selective in specific conditions.

FIELD AGGREGATION This type of aggregation can exploit the features of both tower and slab and avoid some of their drawbacks. Arranging slabs in one direction would never create confined large space, and the combination of towers and slabs can achieve much higher F.A.R. than the current slab model. They are placed into two different sites in Shatin as in-fill and replacement. The urban space of different scale and program, the shared space in the buildings managed to establish a continuous/ transitional spatial experience from large to small, from public to private, thus may suggest that slabs can still has its value as a housing type and a urban element, and together with towers and other type of buildings, they may create a more coherent, diverse, urban model.

GOVERNMENT FOR THE PUBLIC Government buildings has never failed to attract the public as symbols of political propaganda in contemporary China, they are treated like advertisement more than architecture. In this design, I with my team made our effort to challenge this paradigm of architecture and politics, we believe that architecture can influence social behavior, by articulating public space and its connections with other parts of the building, it may even break down those perceived social hierarchies, (e.g. officials to ordinary citizens) and create a socially equitable space, eventually become a building that serves its people and inspires public life.

FORESEE THE UNFORESEEABLE This picture of our working model perfectly depicts the context of this design: another sophisticated urban block to be “airdropped” in the middle of a new town that build from scratch. Concerning the unpredictable future of the new town and the consequential waste of resources, in this design I try to find dynamic balance in an unstable environment, and reflect a city’s natural growth cycle at the same time by a open framework. 35

RECONFIGURABLE CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM The system is designed to be flexible to adapt to different functions, furthermore, it can be disassembled and reassembled in another site or recycled for future development. As the life cycle of these ‘temporary’ buildings prolongs, the tremendous waste of resources are prevented correspondingly. This system is mainly composed by permanent cores and prefab modules, together with a small portion of on-site steel structure. 37

EXPLICATED FACADE Located in an office park, the tower offers open plans for tenants. Simplicity, Transparency, Innovation, Uniqueness, Efficiency are implemented in the design. The facade, particularly, is articulated in a simple and efficient way: all casements are hinged windows covered by louvers, the transparency of glasses is maximized since no casements will be installed on them. By explicating the function of each parts of the facade, a unique yet innovative architectural figure is achieved. 41

INTEGRATION AND RECONCILIATION Located in a dense urban area, there is an emergency to reconcile the tower with the existing surroundings. A slender rectangular base geometry created a narrower depth that promotes natural lighting, also, it reserved more open space for the roof of the podium which is articulated as a public landscape and is extended across the site to connect the existing office building of the client. The scheme effectively integrates architecture, landscape, urbanism and sustainability, creating a contemporary public space for the citizens.

Complex at Qianhai Bay's Integrated Transport Hub 2013

ROLE IN THE PROJECT: Competition Team Leader of CUBE Architect CONTRIBUTION: Concept 50% / Modeling 50% / Team Management 80% Team work in Cube Architectural Design Office LTD. , collarborating with HENN Architekten Supervisor: Tu Jiang Collaborator: Michael Khoeler/Wu Shaowen/Ling Xinhai

URBAN MEGASTRUCTURE The development consists of a public transport hub, retail, office and housing in a vast plot. In order to break down the scale of the masterplan, three epicenters of different program are created and linked by a central axis. The massive blocks are then broken down and connected by a series of small tributaries. A range of spatial experiences from (human scale to urban mega-structure) are created by this planning structure. 53

PLANNING CONCEPT 54

THE TRANSPORT HUB The division between underground and overground programs is eradicated by pulling the ground condition down to the ICE train lines, resulting in natural light and visual connections being formed between the different programmatic partitions. Accordingly, the roof was pulled up in a counter movement to the main concourse in order to create the grand hall of the hub. 55
