GRASSLAB
CULTIVATING INFORMALITY IN KOTA TUA
Design Thesis project, 2016 Supervisor: Armanda Achmadi Site: Fatahillahn Square, Kota Tua, Jakarta, Indonesia 6
MENGQI YU
This thesis argues that informal activities in Kota Tua is a unique force that can be linked up with the development of local creative industry. GrassLab is an urban lab modelled on House of Natural Fibre Foundation (HONF) to support the development of local creative industry in Kota Tua. GrassLab promotes crosscollaborative actions responding to technology development and practical use in daily life. It cultivates informality in Kota Tua by promoting grassroot innovation and offers informal education and workshops for the local community.
SITE CONDITION Today, in Kota Tua, the prevalence trend of adaptive reuse of heritage buildings has been restricted to the typologies of museums and commercial trading areas for middle and upper classes. The current revitalization plan should aim to strengthen the power of local community and economy as a solid base for developing tourism. By de-constructing the current tourism model in Indonesia, the aim of the project is to frame the local communities as positive object not as a threat to tourism. MENGQI YU

POTENTIAL PROGRAM In order to find a common interests for the community. I have analysed the current workshops in HONF and found their relations with food cycle. Indonesia is a country that has strong food culture, especially in a touristy area like Kota Tua. Based on the food cycle, there are lots of potentials for develop programs that assist the local food producing and manufacturing, informal business such as street vendors and sustainable reuse of waste to the field of art or alternative energy. 8

New Program: Informal Gallery & Library
ADAPTIVE REUSE New programs that are community based will be inserted into the existing heritage buildings of Rumah Akar and Dharma Niaga. The new insertion/alteration has a high permeability to the street in order to improve the pedestrian flows and invite a greater range of public into the historical building. The functions of the two heritage buildings will complement the main programs in the GrassLab and at the same time contain its own attractions for both local and international visitors. 10

THE SUBURBAN FAMILY TREE RESIDENTIAL HOUSING DEVELOPMENT Master Studio D, 2015 Supervisor: Joel Benichou Site: Brighton East, Melbourne
Separate houses currently dominate the residential landscape of Australia. In Brighton East, 67.7% of housing types are separate house. The imbalance of housing structure has caused various affordability problems and promote individualism disconnecting people. This project is designed for the extended family groups of Jenny (client). It establishes a “family tree relation via a network of staircases tightly connects family members, neighbours, communal space and greenery together. It has the potential to grow, which could eventually link the whole suburban as a family.

Master Exchange Studio at TU Delft, 2016 Supervisor: Leontine de Wit & Jeffrey Bolhuis Site: Rotterdam,Netherlands
The project is to design a timber work situated in Bergweg 198, north part of Rotterdam city. The location is a Child-friendly Neighbourhood as part of the KIWI project. KIWI is a interdisciplinary inserted project that focuses on three pillars: Greening, Security and Talent, to create positive, pleasant and social environments that facilitates the participates of children. The design proposal of the project is to link the timber workshop with the Kiwi project and the neighbourhood community by introducing a social creative workshop, green open space and communal based vegetable gardens. Indeed, it is a workshop that situated both in the inner city as well as the landscape. It is a place for rough work as well as contemplation and social gathering. KIWI PROJECT 24

WIND ANALYSIS

MENGQI YU
This sustainable art installation is designed for LAGI, an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it into electricity for the utility grid of the City of Copenhagen. The design site is Refshaleøen, which was a shipyard that hire thousands of people. Our project is a steel lattice structure incorporated with wind belt technology. It is composed to be a public art integrating wind to generate clean energy and offsets the new energy demands in Copenhagen. Rather than simply producing energy, the installation aims to fully interact with users to raise their sustainable awareness via visual and audio stimulation of wind belts.

Located at the busy corner of Sydney Rd and Albert Street, the Outre Gallery is designed to slow down the existing pedestrian pace and create a ramp as a spiral laneway around the gallery for people to explore art in a “Brunswick” way. Through the journey of walking on the ramp and the interior space, people could view art as a graffiti, as a formal project or even compose their own artworks in the open courtyard at the end of the ramp journey. This ramp plays a key role to trigger people’s curiosity to discover art layers by layers.

The project is designed for housing refugees in an urban context, which has complete transportation systems, sufficient job and education opportunities. The project is not intended to construct a fixed product, but providing a framework that enables flexible use of spaces within. As a result, a dry assembled super steel grid structure was created as a shelf for the dwelling units. During the peak of refugee inflow, the structure could be expanded both horizontally and vertically to fully house the refugee units. Once the population of refugee dwellers diminished, other types of units (such as shops, gardens, parks, offices, etc.) could be inserted inside to create a mixed use entity in the urban area. The construction of the refugee dwelling units was proposed to accommodate 1-2 people. The materials used are light weight steel frames with sandwich panels, which could be either flat packed or directly transported via by the articulated vehicle. 1.5mm SOLAR FILM
