CMU CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS

CONCRETE MASONRY UNITS is a standard size rectangular block used in construction, also called concrete block. CMU are made from cast concrete and can absorb moisture and less readily(Wikipedia, 2020)

RETAINING WALL

A wall is relatively rigid and builds to retain a bank of earth from sliding. Timber, ston and concrete block are the most common build materials

6

BEVELED WOOD SIDING

Horizontal wood boards of varying widths, with lower edge thicker than upper edge (Bhatia, 2012). The purpose of the siding is to protect the building from strong weather elements.

BOWSTRING TRUSS feature an arc shaped top chord constructed of several wood elements (laminations) mechanically connected through the depth of the member. (Martinez, 2018)

CHORD either of the two principal members of a truss extending from end to end, provided the compression and tension resistance to overall building.(Bhatia, 2012)

BATT INSULATION

Batt insulation is the most common form of home insulation. It is used within exterior wall and interior acoustical partitions (Tucker, 2015). The purpose of insulation works is slow the transfer of heat and sound.

WINDOW TYPES

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

AWNING - top hinged. HOPPER - bottom hinged. BAY - extends beyond the exterior face of wall. CASEMENT - side hinged. DOUBLE HUNG - two sash, vertical sliding. JALOUSIE - glass slats, venetian bling principle (Bhatia,2012).

PARTITION

Partition is a non-baring wall which divides interior space but supports only the materials of the wall itself.

16

NOSING

The projecting portion of a stair treads beyond the riser, usually rounded.

Concrete Stair

18

BALUSTERS / TREAD / RISER

The tread is the horizontal surface and the riser is the vertical surface located between treads (Tucker, 2015). Balusters are the vertical members support the handrail of a staircase (Bhatia, 2012). Tread Depth : minimum 11” Riser Heights : 4” - 7” Gap Between Balusters : minimum 4”

TRAP

The trap is an S-bend under most sinks. Water must be held in the trap so that prevent sewer gases from backing up into the occupied interior space (Tucker, 2015).

22

SEWER

Sewer is a series of underground systems for carrying-off solid to a sewage treatment plant to protect water quality.

CONCLUSION

Building language is professional communication means, which relevant professional designers and customers can understand each design phase more thoroughly. The digital book covers fourteen definitions of terms in three categories: structure, interior, and plumbing system. Although most of the terms here do not belong to the interior design works, we need to be knowledgeable about building systems as a part of the building design team. The words might have different meanings than everyday words, so practicing building language facilitates communication between professions or others.
