Do you think our earth is single-use? The truth is that most of single-use food and beverage packaging cannot be recycled or composted. If we continue using single-use items, they will threaten our health and planet. Now, it's time to reduce your reliance on single-use packaging. They are not your only choice!

Our Earth Is Not Single-use Excessive use of single-use packaging will cause great harm to our planet. I want people to realize the importance of this problem and stop using single-use packaging to save our earth. Also, I will help them to find/explore more environmentally suatainable methods, which can replace the singleuse packaging.

02

A Small Step Can Make a Big Difference Most people think that single-use packaging is quite convenient to use and it is difficult and wierd to change their old habits. I hope to educate people that changing their habits is not as difficult as they think and it is cool to be a "trend-setter", even they just change for one week or only one day which still means a lot to our whole environment.

03

Living a Convenient Urban Life without Unrecyclable Single-use Packaging Many people don't exactly know the definition of recyclable and unrecyclable single-use packaging, which sometimes leads them to make choices, which harm their health and the environment to keep convenience. I want to teach them to distinguish these two kinds of packaging and help them to make better choices both for themselves and the environment.

There already has been lots of similar organizations doing the same things which are not very effective to help people to realize this problem. And it may be more meaningful to encourage people to do something instead of only educating them.

kinds of packaging.

02

Encourage people to change their habits Because it will be quite difficult for people to change all of their old habits, I want to encourage people to change one of their habits. Most Americans have the habit of drinking coffee, but the fact is that coffee cups cannot be recycled. So I want to encourage people to bring their own reusable cups to coffee shops.

03

Focus on lunch time and commuters in the financial district of San Francisco Focusing on a specific time period and particular population will facilitate the project process. I want to let these people know the negative impact of excessive single-use food and beverage packaging use and appeal them to reduce and quit using single-use items particularly at lunch time. Also, the project gives them different ideas to help change their habits and teach them to live in a more environmental-friendly way.

14

GR620_01 Visual Thinking

Only focus on one of their behaviors will be too narrow. It will be difficult to support the whole project. Also, this is a topic which is overdone and overdesigned by lots of people.

Overall Information

Go-goECOPACK is a local organization in San Francisco which focuses on the problem of single-use disposable food and beverage packaging. It was born of the idea that change can begin with a specific group of people in one context, and then spread to others. It wants to educate office workers and commuters to realize the seriousness of single-use disposable food and beverage packaging and encourage them to reduce their dependence on these items and avoid using them. It will give people new ideas to help them green their habits at lunch time and open their minds to move beyond single-use packaging in their lives, which is better for people’s health and our planet.

Who will care about this project? The main target audience of this project will be the office workers and commuters in the financial district of San Francisco. Alan is one of the main target audience. He is a long-distance commuter who works in the financial district of San Francisco. He is a very typical “normal guy who doesn’t care about too much detail in his life. Long-distance commute and busy work cut his personal time, so saving time and self-convenienceare the most important things to him. And if he cannot feel the direct negative impacts of single-usepackaging, it will not be a problem to him. Jamine is a college freshman who cares about healthy living and environmental problems, but first time living away from homeand busy schedule usually makes her difficult to manage food. She does know the negative impacts of single-use packaging, but it is difficult for her to make a choice between environmental protection and saving her time. Caroline is a very devoted single mom who cares about her daughter more than everything. She often eats cheap fast food to save time and money but she always prepares a healthy lunch for het daughter. Her current situation makes it hard for her to take care of both her daughter and herself.

Stakeholders Manufacturers of reusable products

The final mission of this organization is to educate and persuade the public to quit using single-use packaging and encourage them to use more reusable items, such as reusable water bottles, reusable utensils and reusable lunch bags. This will bring considerable economic benefits to the manufacturers of reusable products.

Restaurants

If people begin to reduce and stop using single-use disposable packaging, it will be easier for restaurants to deal with garbage and waste. They can raise the recycling rates and control the cost of garbage disposal and disposable products. And these will be quite helpful to increase the overall income of restaurants.

Waste disposal companies

If people can quit using single-use disposables, it will be much easier for these companies to do garbage sorting and recycling because not all the disposable food and beverage packaging can be recycled. Also it will be quite helpful for them to save energy and money when they send garbage to landfills and incinerators.

Go-goECOPACK “Go-go” is an informal adjective, meaning full of energy, vitality and up-to-date.“Go-go” also can be regarded as “Go! Go!”. I want to appeal to people to jump into action, full of energy.

“ECOPACK” means “Ecological Packaging”. I want to encourage people to use ecological packaging instead of single-use packaging.

So the brand name can be translated to “Let’s go ecological packaging now!”

My main target audience is commuters in the financial district who usually prefer to simplify their lives and opt for convenientce because they work in an urban environment. Therefore, Go-goECOPACK creates a new service which can both keep commuters’ convenience and protect our environment.
