01 LIBRARY DESIGN AND HISTORICAL FACTORY RENOVATION UG_Academic Studio Design Instructor_Yang Meng Solo Work From May 2015 to July 2015
The project is a renovation of an abandoned industrial factory, Wangjiang Factory, in the east of Chongqing, which has witnessed the history of the country and represents the symbol of development. So when a library is implanted, it focuses on two aspects: the reuse of the old factory and the interpretation of the functions of the library. In fact, it is not only the carrier of the history, but also the carrier of spirit. So the main concept of this project is renovation.
The communications between man and man and between man and books are emphasized and multiple solutions had been taken into account. This proposal is trying to pursue an interpenetration of space by creating unenclosed rooms through walls of books, platforms and atriums. Besides, the atmosphere of the old factory is preserved by using the original construction. The library's high sacred space will inspire people to immerse in the ocean of knowledge.

Diversity of Reading Methods The relationship between people and books is varied. Meeting with a book in different places and using different ways to read can relieve the seriousness of library.

Breaking the enclosed space and opening to the public is the main concern of this project. Compared to large stadiums or gymnasiums purely for sports events, medium-sized gymnasiums are for the surrounding people. Therefore, the gym and the site should provide various activities to the public rather than become an isolated landmark. In this project, the roof of the gym is the combination of strips, which becomes a channel connecting a school
and a shopping center. In addition, the roof weakens the large volume of the gym and integrates the surrounding areas.People can enjoy the fun of sports activities outside. Multiple vertical levels of site provide a wealth of communications of non-direct exchange of sight, which stimulates the public participation. Even in the absence of the sports events, the site itself can be a core to activate the surroundings, which makes the gym a real national sports center.

Aggregation & Interflow The openness of the new gymnasium and the site enables a direct connection among a university, a big shopping mall, a public playground and a community, which largely enhanced public activities around. Large amount of people pass by and participate in the exercises in the site.

Landscape: Little Cascade There is a little casade between the competition court and the training court. It is a public activity space under the flowing roof. Children can play with the water and enjoy the landscape.

In order to satisfy the increasing population density, skyscrapers occupy most space of the city center. But skyscrapers inevitably bring many problems. Lots of automatic machines (eg. escalators) make the building look like a cold machine. Lacking of interaction with the city, the skyscraper is too closed. Compared to the monotonous exterior entrance, the interior is extremely interesting. The building even becomes a substitute for
the whole city. Therefore, the project is trying to be as open as possible to break the phenomenon. In the flexible transportation network, the building contains an external spiral public transportation line with a lot of public space. Besides, adding green plants can continue the lively atmosphere of the flower market before. By this way, the building is closely linked to the city.
Background
Inspiration
The original site is surrounded by lots of skyscrapers, which are isolated. To be a part of the city, the project will break the close pattern and connect with the environment and people.
This is a flower market with varied pedlars which attracts people. This project is going to protect the atmosphere by creating a public road and many retails around the skyscraper.

This semi-outdoor concert hall rests on the floor of the valley, as if a strange and prehistoric boulder had fallen there long ago. Made entirely out of concrete mixed with an aggregate of crushed local mineral-rich rocks, its inverted conic structure houses a semi-outdoor amphitheater, an outdoor stage, viewing platforms, and supporting spaces.
