A Letter Of Thankfulness From Our

Psalm 84:11 says, “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor ….”

Tandem Living has experienced the favor of God in 2024!

2024 was a very busy year for Tandem Living. In May we announced new names for the organization. Mennonite Home Communities became Tandem Living and The Mennonite Home became Trillium Place. Accompanying our name change was a modern and attractive rebrand. In June we announced our affiliation with Calvary Homes, and by August we had welcomed all of the Calvary Homes Skilled Nursing and Personal Care residents to Trillium Place. The Woodcrest Villa and Calvary Homes campuses are now independent living campuses, while Trillium Place provides Skilled Nursing and Personal Care services. Tandem Living now serves 1,200+ residents.

We are blessed with great staff at all three campuses and their work was recently recognized. US News and World Report listed Trillium Place as one of seven high performing nursing homes in Lancaster, PA. Newsweek released their America’s Best Nursing Home rankings and Trillium Place was ranked the #1 Nursing Home in PA in the 150+ beds ranking. And to top it off, we were declared deficiency free for the fourth year in a row by the PA Department of Health.

While we celebrate the above accomplishments, significant challenges remain in senior living. Workforce, inflation, and inadequate government reimbursement for Medical Assistance (MA) are a few noteworthy items. Indeed, the gap between our true cost of providing care and the reimbursement we receive per MA resident is now $260/day.

Our donors, board members, business partners, volunteers and staff all assist us in fulfilling our mission. Your generosity is critical to our ability to meet current and future challenges. We are grateful for your support of Tandem Living!

Sincerely,

Our Leadership

The Board of Directors is deeply thankful for the Lord’s hand of favor on Tandem Living, especially in light of the significant changes that have occurred over the past year. We renamed to Tandem Living and Trillium Place (for the Mennonite Home facility). We also affiliated with Calvary Homes, which resulted in their skilled and personal care residents relocating to Trillium Place.

Despite these gains, we continue to wrestle with industry changes and questions of affordability, sustainability and quality. The Board appreciates your prayers for wisdom and discernment as we navigate our future challenges and opportunities.

On behalf of the Board, I want to thank our staff and leadership for their hard work over the past year. The changes have been successful because of our staff and leadership. They have organized, planned and executed the name changes and affiliation with excellence. It takes a team working together to provide the care needed for our residents. The recognition from some leading periodicals is another accomplishment for our team and their hard work.

Finally, I also want to thank the many volunteers and donors who give of their time and resources to serve our residents. Your generous gifts to benevolent care provide for residents whose financial resources are limited. We as a community are working together to fulfill our mission to enrich the lives of residents, staff and the community, to pursue their passions, deepen their relationships, prioritize their wellness and live fully at every age.

With appreciation, Roy Bomberger Jr. Tandem Living Board Chairman

Best of the Best

It has been quite the year for Tandem Living. The organization underwent a rebrand, rename and then an affiliation. Through it all, staff at all three campuses remained steadfast in their dedication to providing all residents outstanding care.

Recently, Tandem Living’s care campus, Trillium Place, received national recognition from two prestegious companies.

Newsweek ranked Trillium Place as the “Best Nursing Home in Pennsylvania”. According to their website, Newsweek reviews over 1,000 nursing homes across 25 states. They award placement based on four key elements: performance data, recommendations from medical professionals, accreditations and resident satisfaction.

U.S. News and World Report named Trillium Place one of “The Best Nursing Homes in Lancaster, PA.” Out of the 32 qualified nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities in the Lancaster, PA area, Trillium Place was listed as receiving a 5 out of 5 rating. The ratings were based on staffing, patient outcomes and known steps that are effective in avoiding harm and improving health built into nursing routines.

Then, right before the holiday season, local newspaper, LNP, awarded Tandem Living one of the “Best Workplaces in 2024.” Tandem Living won first place in Best Company To Work For Overall, Best Workplace Culture and Best Leadership. The community earned these awards based upon the number of votes for local large business participants.

These national and local recognitions could not be acheived without the dedication of staff from all three communities focused on the vision and mission of the organization. Though there are decades worth of incredibly touching stories that families have shared about their loved ones and the care they received from staff members of Tandem Living, two recent stories are testimonies to our staff’s dedication.

In December 2022, Larry and Janice Booz found themselves spending more time with her parents, Vernon and Angela Stinebaugh, at Woodcrest Villa as day-to-day tasks became difficult. The Stinebaugh’s were both 103 years old and had been married for more than 80 years. Janice contacted Jessica Perry, Resident Services Coordinator, about her concerns.

“Jessica was responsive right away, always

available to chat, and ready with resources and ideas as we began to navigate the increasing needs of my parents,” Janice recalled.

“Jessica could do things we could not. She spoke calmly, and skillfully, without upsetting or pressuring them, and was always ready to answer our questions and deal with concerns,” Janice said.

Once the Stinebaugh’s moved to Trillium Place, the staff were very helpful in navigating the changes. Vernon and Angela were in personal care, but within months they needed to transition to skilled nursing.

Rebecca Carl, Social Worker, was instrumental in answering questions. Meetings were scheduled every three months to update and

discuss Vernon and Angela’s care.

“Their caregivers provided answers and reassurance to both my parents and to us. We were impressed with the amount of time that this must take to handle this many regular meetings for so many residents,” Janice said.

Angela passed away in February 2024, two weeks prior to turning 105 years old. Vernon lived to be 105. Since he was cognizant right up to his death, he was able to share his appreciation for the care he received. He especially appreciated Juli Hoffmaster.

According to Janice, “Juli had a knack, not just for caring for my father, but also for the way she communicated with us. She became a special friend to my father. You have great staff in the right situations. We are so

Angela and Vernon Stinebaugh pictured here in their apartment at Woodcrest Villa would later move to Trillium Place together.
Priscilla Hurter and her son, Cliff enjoy time together at Trillium Place.

Our second story highlights Priscilla and Dick Hurter who moved to the area in 1983. For the next eleven years, she served as secretary to two executive directors, first George Baumgartner, and then for her son, Cliff beginning in 1988. Four years later, Priscilla and her husband, Dick, moved into a cottage at Calvary Homes. When Priscilla retired in 1994, she and Dick looked forward to sharing many years of retirement together. Unfortunately, Dick passed away in 2000.

Following Dick’s passing, Priscilla moved from her cottage to an apartment, and then into Personal Care at Calvary Homes. Following Calvary Homes’ affiliation with Tandem Living, Priscilla moved to Personal Care at Trillium Place. Priscilla and her son, Cliff, share about how she is adjusting to her new home.

According to Priscilla, “In my lifetime, 95 years, I’ve made a lot of changes and they’ve all been good. I said to Cliff, why wouldn’t this be good? That was my attitude. Trillium Place is going to be good.”

Cliff and his mother both agree that the transition to Trillium Place has been very good for her. Specifically, Priscilla commented on how much she likes the facility and the staff.

that I had at Calvary [Homes]. They make your bed, clean your room, help you get dressed – they do everything for you!”

In addition to the high-quality care she receives, she is also socially active with other residents in her household through playing games and eating meals together.

“I think in the four months she has been here, she has done more things than she did in the two years that she was in Personal Care at Calvary Homes. She has become much more involved since the transition to Trillium Place,” said Cliff. “I’m thankful for the smooth transition my mom went through. It was so nice that most of the residents who were in Personal Care with her, as well as a number of team members, moved with her. I’m thankful for the care she gets and for the security she has at Trillium Place.”

With their longstanding connection to Calvary Homes, the Hurter family continues to support benevolent care. Priscilla, her son Cliff and his wife Carol, and her grandchildren have all given generously to help those in need of financial support.

“Everything is brand new here and my room is wonderful. I have many of the same nurses

When asked why she supports benevolent care, Priscilla said, “I’m friends with residents who have had to rely on benevolent care and they never knew I gave, but they expressed to me their gratitude that the rest of the family of Calvary Homes cared enough to share their money with those in need. That’s why giving to benevolent care has always been at the

top of my giving order. Even though I may not be able to give as much as others, I know that it is going to someone who is grateful. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of those who need support. So, if you have friends and family who can give, tell them how important it is to support benevolent care at Calvary Homes.”

Vernon and Angela Stinebaugh’s and Pricilla Hurter’s stories are just a few among the many examples of Trillium Place’s unwavering commitment to our residents and their families.

Taylor Mardis, Infection Preventionist, takes time to get to know residents and provides oustanding care.
Petra Son, Learning Enrichment Specialist, cheers on residents in a game of balloon badminton.
Shelly Zook, Licensed Practical Nurse, focuses on a persondirected approach to the care she provides.

Having a Ball

Residents of Calvary Homes can look forward to an exciting addition this winter: two new indoor pickleball courts. The updated facility, located in Fellowship Hall, provides a yearround space to stay active, socialize, and enjoy one of the nation’s fastestgrowing sports.

As temperatures drop and outdoor activities become less inviting, the new courts offer an ideal way to stay fit and connected. Pickleball—a game that combines tennis, badminton, and ping pong—is easy to learn and enjoyed by players of all skill levels and ages.

The courts also create an opportunity for Calvary Homes and Woodcrest Villa residents to come together, fostering friendships and camaraderie. With open play sessions and friendly tournaments in the works, this shared space is sure to become a hub of activity and fun.

Grab a paddle, lace up your sneakers, and join the fun. The new indoor pickleball courts are ready to keep spirits high and energy flowing, no matter the season.

Calvary Homes residents, Greg & Karen Uhrich, enjoy playing on the indoor pickleball court.

Soaring into the New Year

Falcon Pointe at Woodcrest Villa is nearing completion and new residents will be moving into their new home in April 2025.

Recently, Woodcrest Villa welcomed future residents to a Dusty Shoe Tour to explore the first floor of their future apartment building and learn of their move-in day in spring 2025.

Residents had an opportunity to see what they or their neighbors had chosen for their apartment(s) from quartz countertop patterns, to cabinet colors, flooring styles, fireplace installments and tile showers.

A few residents brought a family member

or two, who stopped inside their apartment for measurements, envisioning furniture placement and snap a selfie or two.

Woodcrest Villa staff are excited to welcome our new residents in a few short months!

This edition of Living in Tandem celebrates the achievements of the 2024 fiscal year (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024). On August 1, 2024, Calvary Homes joined Trillium Place and Woodcrest Villa to become an affiliated member of Tandem Living. Because the timeframe for the affiliation happened after the end of the 2024 fiscal year, this publication includes seperate financial statements for The Mennonite Home (a legal entity comprised of Trillium Place and Woodcrest Villa), and Calvary Homes. In addition, donor lists for The Mennonite Home are included. Calvary Homes has not typically included donor names in public documents. Calvary Homes intends to ask its donors if they would like to be represented in future winter editions of Living in Tandem.
