A Legacy of Compassionate Care For generations, Mennonite Home Communities (MHC) has provided excellent person-centered care. Even so, we aren’t content to rest on our laurels.

Striving for excellence has earned The Mennonite Home (MH) a five-star rating and a deficiency-free survey from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Advancements in technology, upgrades to physical buildings, and ongoing programming to enhance the resident experience, contribute to a legacy of successful care at MHC.

Other accolades include the rating of MH by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top nursing homes in their 70+ PA Nursing Homes Top 2023’s U. S. News Marty is a long-time friend and donor ‘Best’ List. MH was also recognized as the to benevolent care at Mennonite Home second best nursing facility in the state of Communities. Marty lived in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania throughout most of her career at Elizabethtown College, where she served as a professor in the Business Department before her promotion as the Dean and Director of Institutional Research and Planning. She moved to Lancaster in 2001 prior to her retirement from the College in 2003.

Pennsylvania in Newsweek’s publication, America’s Best Nursing Homes 2024. It’s no surprise that the legacy of compassionate care continues to gain support from generation to generation. This is true for donor Martha (Marty) Eppley.

Marty’s mother, Martha Tinney, was living by herself in western Elizabethtown. Martha enjoyed her home, and for years she hesitated joining a retirement community. However, Martha realized that living on her own was becoming challenging.

Pictured is Martha Tinney, mother of Marty Eppley who had resided at Mennonite Home Communities.

Pictured in her home is Marty Eppley with her Angel display.

She shared with Marty that with most of her friends passing, she also felt lonely. In, 2002, Martha relocated to Woodcrest Villa. Moving to Woodcrest Villa opened up a whole new world where she quickly made new friends and enjoyed the easy accessibility to everything she needed. Martha experienced a new life for herself; one she thought she would never experience.

“I think it’s important to emphasize both safety and happiness as part of what Woodcrest Villa and Mennonite Home provides for the residents...” While Martha was thriving at Woodcrest Villa, Marty had peace of mind knowing her mother was in a place where she was safe and happy. Later, Martha moved to the Mennonite Home where she received “phenomenal” care until her passing in 2009. When asked to give a gift toward renovations needed at Mennonite Home, Marty willingly gave to the Person-Centered Care Campaign in 2010. A plaque can be found in Wissler Run in memory of her mother.

When thinking about her future plans and the care her mother received, Marty decided to include Mennonite Home Communities in her estate plans. To Marty, it just seemed logical to “support the organization that provided a new life and many happy years” for her mother.

financial contribution can do, no matter how large or small.”

Marty said, “As I reflected on my Mom’s situation in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, I realized that her safety was equally as important as her happiness in regard to her overall well-being. I think it’s important to emphasize both safety and happiness as part of what Woodcrest Villa and Mennonite Home provides for the residents – and by extension, to the residents’ families. I am eternally grateful for the seven years my Mom spent in the Mennonite Home Communities!”

MHC’s unwavering commitment to providing future generations the five-star care that residents deserve couldn’t happen without the help of generous donors like Marty.

In addition to her generous giving to the Person-Centered Care Campaign at Mennonite Home, Marty is also a charter member of Hearts and Hands Women’s Connection and has enjoyed attending the organization’s events since 2018. Marty was asked, “What would you tell someone who is considering a gift in their will for Mennonite Home Communities?” Marty was quick to say, “Follow your heart and consider the good that the organization is doing and what a NEWS MAGAZINE

MHC deeply values people like Marty who give their time, money and talents to enable the organization to serve residents.

Over the last five years, MHC has received over $1.2 million in bequest gifts from generous donors who wanted to leave a legacy of caring for their friends and neighbors in need. Many donors have found that bequest gifts are their preferred way to establish a legacy. One way to do this is through a planned gift, such as naming Mennonite Home Communities as the beneficiary of your will or trust. That can be done by adding simple language to your estate plans. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Kim Peters, Director of Development.

Annual Report 2023 Warmest greetings from Mennonite Home Communities! I am always grateful for God’s faithfulness! Mennonite Home Communities turned 120 years old this fall. Looking back, we see ample evidence of God’s faithfulness to us over those 12 decades. The Mennonite Home was recently named the #2 Nursing Home in Pennsylvania by Newsweek for the second consecutive year. Woodcrest Villa (WCV) is growing and is now home to 730 residents (a record!) who are living a vibrant lifestyle full of activity. This year we added 10 villas and began construction on Falcon Pointe, a building with 35 beautiful apartments. We are grateful that each of the new villas and apartments were sold prior to the beginning of construction. WCV enjoys a 98% occupancy rate (another record!). It is truly a privilege to observe our staff as they provide outstanding care and services. Together, we are pursuing our Christ-based mission of enriching the lives of residents, staff and the community. Despite the ongoing challenges in senior living, we are blessed. Our donors, board members, volunteers, business partners and staff all assist us in fulfilling our mission. Your generosity is critical to our ability to meet current and future challenges. Thank you for your support. John D. Sauder, NHA President Mennonite Home Communities

A Letter From The Board Chairperson The Board of Mennonite Home Communities takes its responsibilities seriously to monitor the strength of the organization and its services, and strategize to meet the challenges facing senior living. Paramount among our priorities are the issues of sustainability, quality, and affordability. We are blessed with excellent staff and Executive leadership. The Board appreciates your prayers for discernment and wisdom as we evaluate future challenges and opportunities. On behalf of the entire Board, I want to thank our staff for the excellent care and services they provide to residents at the Mennonite Home and Woodcrest Villa. It takes dedicated team members who are willing to work together to provide care that enriches the lives of each resident. I also want to thank the many volunteers and donors who give their time and resources to serve others. The benevolent care fund, which provides for residents in financial need, is supported through the generous donations of many individuals and businesses. Only together, as a community of donors, volunteers, staff, and Board members, can we fulfill our Christ-based mission to “enrich the lives of our residents, staff and the community.” With appreciation, Roy Bomberger Jr. Board Chairperson NEWS MAGAZINE 4

Falcon Pointe

The sun shines brightly on our new Falcon Pointe apartment building at Woodcrest Villa! Thanks to mild weather as we start 2024, this sold out apartment expansion is well on it’s way to going vertical. Designed by RLPS Architects and constructed by Warfel Construction, this boutique apartment building offers four stories of luxurious apartments with patios or balconies. The fourth floor has an indoor party room with an attached rooftop terrace. Like the six other apartment buildings, Falcon Pointe will be connected to the main building, which makes getting to dining, events and our wellness programs for residents convenient. Located near its sister building, Pheasant Pointe, Falcon Pointe will connect to the main building on two levels, one near the Garden Cafe, and other near Bluebird Inn. NEWS MAGAZINE
