ISSUE NUMBER 76 - APRIL 2016

JUST A THOUGHT Dear Passionate Readers, “We didn’t do anything wrong, but somehow we lost”. These words, reportedly delivered by Nokia’s CEO when announcing the company’s takeover by Microsoft, became an immediate Internet legend and were widely quoted across many platforms. Why did this one liner create such a buzz and became a heated topic of discussion? Simply put, it summarized a leadership attitude that leads to a ruinous end. “We didn’t do anything wrong” Isn’t that an obvious state of denial and inability to take responsibility for one’s actions and their subsequent results?! “But somehow we lost” The use of “somehow” reflects poor assessment ability. If one cannot assess what triggered failure, how can one assess what was needed for success? “We didn’t do anything wrong, but somehow we lost”!! And these words resonated in my ears and shook me to the core. How easy is it, at the top, to forget how vulnerable we still are? How easy is it, for we are all human, to succumb to that sense of invincibility, mistaking our stubbornness for determination? When you have secured your position at the top, how do you keep your malleability to adapt? May we all never forget what has led to our success, and may we always remember that survival is for the most adaptable. Till next issue,

Zeina Mokaddam Managing Director

THE AFICIONADO

Lady Porsche Noura Al-Bshaier, Public Relations manager, Porsche Club Kuwait

P

orsche means many things to many people. One constant through though is the passion it engenders. Well known to Porsche aficionados in Kuwait is Noura Al-Bshaier – affectionately known as Lady Porsche. As elegant and glamorous as the car she chooses to drive, we met Noura to hear more about her passion, and about her involvement with the Porsche Club of Kuwait.

Photography by Mohammad Jasem Alwazzan (@mohamedalwazzan)

THE AFICIONADO

What inspired your love for Porsche? The history of the car from its designer Ferdinand Porsche, the man who was responsible for designing the first Porsche 356 which began an evolution to the present day 911. Secondly its ease of use. The 911 is one of the very few sportscar that can be used everyday. Lastly, as a woman interested in fashion, I was able to customize my Porsche to my taste – a style that reflects my personality. What is your current model, and what are the special characteristics that attracted you to it? I have a chocolate colored Carrera 911 with red interior - it reflects my passion for chocolate Porsche is more than a sportscar marque these days, it’s everything from SUV to Grand Tourer, and each model is more desirable than the one that came before. What do you believe lies behind Porsche’s success? What’s their secret? Well, in my point of view, they defined and established the standards that every other marque now has to try to reach. I met the team behind the success during the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) at Bahrain international Circuit last year. One of my most memorable experiences was meeting Wolfgang Porsche - the youngest grandson of Ferdinand (Ferry) Porsche the creator of all the magic. There was a time when sportscars were pretty much men-only. What’s the reaction you receive when you step out of your car at a Porsche event? Is there still an element that feels women aren’t welcome? Not at all, in fact Porsche’s first client was a lady, so Porsche and women go way back. Women today are able to drive sportscars without any physical disadvantages and enjoy the sensation of owning and driving a sportscar. Also, the majority of Porsche owners are in Kuwait are women. You’re closely involved in the Porsche Club Kuwait. What is your role? I am the Public Relations Manager of the committee of the Porsche Club Kuwait, and I use the moniker Lady Porsche while hitting my role in social media networking channels. I enjoy meeting the Porsche fans and motorsports

supporters, and also attending motorsports events within the region and beyond. My goal is to be an inspiration to all the women in my region What does the PCK offer owners and lovers of Porsche in Kuwait? It enables them to share their passion for Porsche with fellow Porsche enthusiasts. We all exchange knowledge and information about Porsche by meeting like minded persons and exchange experiences. We enjoy quality events throughout the year, and exclusivity to official Porsche and dealer events, with offers and discounts from Porsche and partner companies, and offers and discounts from handpicked companies Which are the key annual PCK events that Porschelovers really shouldn’t miss? Plenty! Club Establishment Anniversary parade on 18th November; Track Day at Bahrain International Circuit; Auto Cross challenge; Karting challenge; Porsche Photography Contest; and attending Federation International Automobile (FIA) World Endurance Championship races (WEC) to support the Porsche team What is PCK’s relationship with the dealer, Behbehani? Very close, since we are an official club that is registered at Porsche AG in Germany as club number 212 of the 670 Porsche clubs throughout 86 countries that have more than 200,000 members worldwide. We are the second official club in GCC. We have great support from Porsche Middle East and Porsche Centre Kuwait - Behbehani Motors Company. The dealer offers new Porsche owners free one year membership to the club, an invitation to dealer events and priority for offers and information about new products, and offers very special offers and discounts on new and approved car purchases, accessories, parts, service and Porsche Drivers Selection. What is your dream Porsche? My dream Porsche is the 918 Spyder - with a special color and my name on it!

THE DRIVE

McLaren 570S For the thrill of it

T

here’s nothing that says ‘exotic supercar’ more than the opening of a McLaren’s door. Some would say the 570S is the ultimate sportscar experience. Completely driver-centric and performance oriented, the 570S Coupé is equally at home on the track as it is on the open road. For this special Automotive Edition of MEN’S PASSION, and courtesy of Kuwait’s exclusive McLaren dealer Ali Alghanim & Sons Automotive Company, we got the opportunity to take it for a drive. Or, more accurately, we handed it over to Yousif Hamad Bourisli who did the honors for us. We’ll let him take it from here…

THE DRIVE

From its founder Bruce McLaren, and right through Ron Dennis’ stewardship of the company, McLaren’s heritage has been in racing. They’ve poured their vast knowledge and experience gained in racing directly into their road cars. It’s impossible to look at a McLaren and not feel the hairs on the back of one’s neck stand up. McLaren is one of the ver y few companies that embody the essence of motoring’s unique spirit of spor t, finesse and engineering excellence. And yet with the 570S, in common with their other models, they’ve packaged the histor y and made it contemporar y by delivering cars on the edge of 21st centur y per formance, while ensuring they remain eminently drivable on a daily basis. There’s nothing monstrous about the look of a McLaren, despite what the per formance figures might want you to believe: accelerate from standstill and the McLaren 570S Coupe will reach 100kmh in just 3.2 seconds and get to 200kmh in a staggering 9.5 seconds. Both stupefying and exciting. Beyond impressive, impossible for all but the ver y rarest of automotives to match and, in the 570S, delivered in amidst a confidence-inspiring aura that knows no equal. One of the many McLaren technologies the Spor ts Series shares with its Formula 1 and supercar cousins is carbon fibre construction. The MonoCell II is a strong chassis that weighs just 75kg and provides immense rigidity and stiffness that translates into outstanding dynamics. This lightweight construction coupled with the potent mid-mounted V8 provide the best power-toweight ratio of any spor ts car in its class.

Created to be driven daily, it’s a motorcar that makes every journey a special experience in every respect. It’s surely impossible to travel any distance in the 570S without the senses being enlivened, and without the journey becoming at least as important as the destination. From the opening of the dihedral door, to the touch of the (naturally) leather-clad steering wheel, surveying the cockpit, starting the engine and engaging the gearbox into drive is a memory to always be cherished… every time one does it. It’s as close to motoring heaven as I’ve been. A signature McLaren feature, the dihedral doors swing open to make entering and leaving as effor tless as possible. Delicately contoured in lightweight aluminium, the unique-in-class doors extend all the way to the front wheel arches, and help to channel cool air to elegant wing-like air intakes integrated into the rear fenders. A central seven-inch zone displays vital information, including road speed, engine rpm and gear selection. Turn-by-turn navigation, a trip computer and engine operating temperatures are displayed in three-inch outer sections. Information is prioritised according to vehicle mode, with a race car-style display activated in Track mode and distinctive colors clearly signaling the ideal gearshift point. The seven-speed seamless-shift gearbox can be used in Auto mode for maximum convenience, or controlled via steering-wheel-mounted rocker-shift paddles for manual gear selection. Aggressive and evocative, there are no adjectives to fairly describe the sound, it has to be heard and felt from inside the car with windows down.

28 29

THE DRIVE

The 570S features a louder exhaust sound compared to the 540C and 570GT. For an even more potent growl, a Sports Exhaust is available as an option and provides a stunning soundtrack to the car’s performance. With that lovely engine sound - who cares about tire noise, bring it on! The all-aluminium twin-turbocharged engine is mounted extremely low in the chassis for enhanced agility. Torque is served progressively over an incredibly broad powerband, encouraging the driver to use all 8500rpm. A stop-star t system seamlessly shuts down the engine when stationar y, improving efficiency and refinement. The car accelerates effor tlessly. The closest comparison I can give is to my experience in a Porsche 911 Turbo S. But it’s the way it makes you feel as it delivers those

phenomenal figures that’s so crucial. It immerses you in the experience, connects you to the road and engages your senses completely. Equally, the carbon ceramic brakes give total confidence when slowing in an emergency. Fitted as standard on the 570S, the carbon ceramic brakes come with front calipers operated by a six-piston unit. While comfor t might not be the number one priority for racing cars lovers, this McLaren offers enough of it and is easy enough to drive that covering long distances shouldn’t prove to be a problem at all! Kuwait to Dubai here I come… With this car McLaren has set its sights to blow away any competition.

Lexus GS F The true essence of driving

T

areq Q is a man well known for putting rubber to the road, but that’s more usually the rubber-soled kicks of this style influencer (Instagram: kickstq) than Michelin rubber-shod 19-inch rims of a sportscar. He knows style, he knows quality, and he knows cars. Given the opportunity to try out the Lexus GS F by Kuwait dealer Mohamed Naser Al Sayer & Sons, we promptly handed it over to Tareq Q and followed him through the streets of the city, and beyond. Inspired by classic race cars of the past, Yukihiko Yaguchi – the chief engineer of the 2016 Lexus GS F – insists that it’s easy to drive a proper race car, and that’s what he wants drivers to say about his GS F. However, you’ll find that neither Yaguchi, nor Lexus, nor indeed our own Tareq Q (in the curious way that style influencers often have about them - we won’t reveal his full name, nor will he reveal his full face), dwell on out-and-out performance figures. You can be sure though that with the 5.0 liter V8 delivering 467 horsepower at 7,100 rpm, and 389 pound-feet of torque at 4,800 rpm, the GS F’s urge to surge is more than matched by its ability to do so. First impressions, as always count. And for Tareq Q, the GS F ticks all the style boxes; “I was pleasantly surprised by its overall fresh design, even taking into account the two rear doors,” he says. “Overall it was aesthetically very pleasing to the eye.” Specially designed parts such as stacked quad exhaust diffusers, as well as a large front spindle grille and large air ducts, a rear spoiler, plus lower grille molding made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer, provide enhanced cooling and aerodynamic performance and underline and embody the individuality of the F series. In keeping with current Lexus style, the GS F makes its presence known with a yawning hourglass grille stretching from hood to asphalt. The cabin is dressed with carbonfiber accents; the parts-bin F steering wheel; and a huge, centrally mounted tachometer. Seeking to crack open a niche for luxury sports sedans that favor finesse over outright power, it’s a practical car, one designed to be devastatingly satisfying when driven daily. Tareq Q reported “Yes, I’d have no reservations. The car’s new look also comes with speed, comfort, and additional options to complement its practical size”. The satisfaction

THE DRIVE

chief engineer Yaguchi aims for is of the back-road variety, the kind that lets you blitz a two-lane highway without fear of ending your ride in someone’s living room. It got stability and predictability – giving the driver the confidence to approach the car’s limits. Wide, low, aggressive proportions contribute to a low-slung design suggestive of the vehicle’s superior driving performance. The dynamics of the GS F deliver a dramatically different experience to that of Tareq Q’s current mode of transport. The use of a specially designed suspension system helps achieve both a high level of operating stability when driving on circuits - helping the wheels stick tightly to the road surface - and a comfortable ride on ordinary roads. The Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD) torque control system provides automatic optimal electronic control of the torque of the left and right rear wheels according to the driving situation, achieving ideal vehicle behavior during cornering. Its three operating modes - Standard, Slalom, and Circuit - provide superior responsiveness under a broad range of situations, from driving on an ordinary road to circuit driving. The new Active Sound Control (ASC) achieves a more powerful engine sound in the cabin space through the addition of internal rear speakers that modify the engine sound created during acceleration or deceleration. Tareq Q’s feedback on road noise from within the cockpit, a bane of many sports sedans… “There was none that I could notice - most probably because of its stability control system and strong traction. The Michelin tires gripped the tar, especially well when cornering.” “Visibility while maneuvering is great – this is a real advantage of its advanced camera systems and compact size. Performance is outstanding. The GS F is exceptionally quick off the line and has superb throttle response”, he commented, adding praise for the brakes too; “the fixed Brembo brakes can be viewed as a security mechanism when dealing with the high g-loads, adding to it’s impression on how this car can be a serious trackday weapon”. The GS F features functional components that support operation during sport driving, such as special seats

with sporty styling reminiscent of the body suits worn by athletes that provide excellent fit, manufactured through integral skin foam molding, as well as pedals with antiskid slits that ensure reliable contact when pressed during operation. But is the GS F a sportscar in the true sense of the word? It’s something more than a sportscar, as Tareq Q pointed out; “It does not look like a sportscar (with the exception of the visible racing tires and Brembo brakes) until you get behind the wheel and put it to the test. The most appealing factors, in my opinion, are its practicality and its distinctive design as it diverts from the typical sportscar”. What we have here is a car that displays both finesse and fury, an interesting-to-drive machine that makes you look for a better road to hammer along. With the GS F, the engineers were allowed to build a Lexus with an extra bit of soul baked in. We’re rather pleased they did.

Power, Speed, Performance – the new high-performance Audi R8 sports car

F

rom 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, from 0 to 200 km/h, 9.9 seconds and a top speed of 330 km/h. Naturally-aspirated V10 mid-engine with up to 610 hp of power responds instantly to throttle inputs. Aerodynamic concept of a race car: The new Audi R8 is the dynamic vanguard of Audi – no other car with the four rings is so close to car racing. The all-new Audi R8 will be available in the Middle East with a starting price of $149,590 for the V10 engine and $171,390 for the V10 plus model. Here’s your chance for an inside look during its recent regional launch at Yas Marina.

THE AUTOMOTIVE EDITION

“Car racing has been a part of our Audi DNA for many decades,” says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development. “Audi stands for automotive dynamism, and this applies very much to our new high-performance R8 sports car. In all technical areas it is extremely close to being a race car. It is the most powerful, fastest and sharpest production Audi ever.” The new R8 launches in two engine versions – as the R8 V10 plus with 610 hp it is the most powerful and fastest production Audi ever built. The 5.2 liter V10 enables breathtaking performance, and its hissing, roaring sound is highly emotional. Yet fuel economy has been improved by up to 13 percent in the R8 model series compared to the previous model. Fully variable torque distribution: the new quattro drive In the powertrain, the lightning-quick shifts of the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, an optimized mechanical differential lock and a new electrohydraulically activated multi-plate clutch work together. The actively cooled all-wheel drive system can distribute torque freely between the axles. The intelligent dynamic control system for the quattro drive is incorporated into the Audi drive select dynamic handling system that offers four basic modes. In each mode, the new high-performance sports car expresses a different character – from relaxed freeway cruiser to race car on the circuit track. In the top R8 V10 plus model, a performance leather steering wheel is standard equipment. In its performance mode, it offers three additional modes: dry, wet and snow. They make handling even more precise and sharper, tuned to the friction coefficient of the specific road surface. The new technology is also available on the R8 V10, including the steering wheel that is used to select the special modes.

Exclusively for the driver: operating controls Just like in a race car, the interior of the high-performance sports car focuses on the driver. The driver can read off all key information at a glance from the Audi virtual cockpit. The steering wheel, instrument cluster and road all line up along one central visual axis. Drivers can operate all important functions with the multifunction and satellite push-buttons without having to take their hands off the steering wheel or look away from the road. The Audi virtual cockpit is user configurable, and it shows all displays in elaborate 3D graphics – if desired, with one large rev counter and auxiliary gages that show much more information, such as tire temperature and torque output. MMI navigation plus with MMI touch is standard equipment in the new R8. This high-end media center was designed to follow a simple operating logic. Extreme lighting range: laser spot for the high beam headlight The workmanship of the new R8 – which is handcrafted at a new plant near Neckarsulm – is superlative. Its range of optional technology components extends to the sound system from Bang & Olufsen and the Audi laser spot, which doubles the range of the high-beam light. Sister models: Audi R8 LMS No other production car with the four rings shows as much af finity for the race track as the new R8. This is also proven by its sister models – the new GT3 race car, the Audi R8 LMS. For the first time, Audi developed all two versions simultaneously, in order to optimally exploit synergies. Both the new Audi R8 and its motorspor t variant, the R8 LMS, have made significant per formance gains, thanks to the close cooperation between race car engineers, motorspor t specialists and developers. Just ten weeks af ter its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, the R8 LMS made its dazzling entrance on the 24 hour racing scene, seizing overall victor y on the Nürburgring.

The new E-Class, which comes to market this spring, is sure to add fur ther impetus, setting stylish accents with its clear design and premium interior, and presenting a host of technical innovations. The intelligence of the new E-Class is inspired by the F 015 Luxur y in Motion. The research vehicle unveiled in 2015 delivered many new ideas that are already finding their way into series production in the new E-Class. One example is the DRIVE PILOT, which marks the next step towards autonomous driving. It automatically maintains the correct distance to vehicles in front and can follow them at speeds of up to 210 km/h on motorways and countr y roads. Further intelligent assistance systems in the E-Class, including Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function and Evasive Steering Assist, take the load off the driver and deliver a whole new level of safety and comfort. Also new is the Remote Parking Pilot, which for the first time enables remote-controlled parking via a smartphone app. The E-Class is now even safer thanks to Car-to-X communication. It is the first production model able to exchange information with other vehicles and with suitably equipped infrastructure. Dangers such as broken down vehicles or slipper y roads are thus identified sooner. Added to that are new infotainment and operating systems, offering a whole new multimedia experience. Stuttgar t dream car of fensive Besides the E-Class, 2016 also belongs to the MercedesBenz dream cars, especially the cabriolets and roadsters. The inventor of the automobile is showing a unique lineup of open-top vehicles in Geneva. The range extends from the world’s smallest cabriolet, the smar t cabrio, to the highly exclusive Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC Cabriolet “Edition 130”. The highlights of the dream-car collection include the new C-Class Cabriolet, which celebrates its world premiere in Geneva. “Our first C-Class Cabriolet is a dream car in many respects,” says Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and MercedesBenz Cars Development. “One reason for that is the elegantly spor ty design language. However, the design is not only breathtaking, it also facilitates the best possible aerodynamics – with an outstandingly low drag coefficient of 0.28.”

THE AUTOMOTIVE EDITION

With modern luxury and a youthful touch, the C-Class Cabriolet is a highly attractive entry point into the world of Mercedes dream cars. The four-seater with a classic soft top offers open-air driving fun 365 days of the year. The broad range of engines spans from the four-cylinder diesel with 125 kW (170 hp) to the V6 biturbo, which generates 270 kW (367 hp) in the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC Cabriolet.

European premieres in Geneva. Significantly updated both technically and visually, the iconic MercedesBenz SL will be available to order as of April 2016. More powerful engines, the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, DYNAMIC SELECT with five drive programmes and Active Body Control with curve tilting function lift the legend to a new level of performance dynamics.

Also celebrating its world premiere is the new MercedesAMG C 43 4MATIC Coupé, which enhances the C-Class performance range with a further variant. With the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and rear-biased AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the C 43 Coupé delivers a huge serving of driving fun.

Another highlight is the new SLC. 20 years after the introduction of the first SLK, the cult roadster is succeeded by a model with a name that clearly states its close connection to the C-Class. The facelifted model is identifiable by its sharpened design with the diamond grille as standard..

Three dream cars for even more exclusive open-air driving fun

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC Cabriolet “Edition 130” references the invention of the automobile 130 years ago. AMG, the Mercedes-Benz per formance and spor ts car brand, honours the 130th anniversar y with an exclusive special edition notable for its utterly exquisite appointments.

Exclusive open-air driving fun comes courtesy of the new SL, the SLC and the Mercedes-AMG S 63 4MATIC Cabriolet “Edition 130” – all three dream cars are celebrating their

The Gulf Run Turning it up to 11

I

t started with a few friends taking their cars to Bahrain for an informal track day, and has now developed into the best known of Kuwait’s annual motoring events. As it has grown, it has retained its friendly spirit. Just before they set of for the 11th edition of the Gulf Run, we spoke to the organizers to get the inside track.

THE AUTOMOTIVE EDITION

The Gulf Run must now be one of the region’s longest running automotive events. Did you have any idea it would be as big and successful when you held GR1 all those years ago? We created the first event as a weekend getaway for a group of friends, it was an intimate affair with around 12 cars. At the time, we didn’t expect it to be what it is today. However, after GR2, we saw the potential and opportunity into growing it into a real event. That’s when we took the event public and with the strong support from our participants and sponsors it has only grown from there. How far do you feel GR has moved from its original concept – which was purely to take a group of guys (as it then exclusively was) to Bahrain’s Sakhir Circuit to test themselves and their cars? The idea behind GulfRun was simple, Automotive events by automotive people – our events inspired by what we would want to participate in ourselves. The Carshow was created to bring together the racers, car enthusiasts and dealerships locally. The Karting Endurance Race was created in partnership with Pro-Vision to offer a competition locally – and eventually raise local talent to the regional and international levels. What would you say are the aims of the Gulf Run in 2016? Our aim before GulfRun 10 was to create events that were missing locally, and I believe that we have achieved that with GulfRun Race, Karting and Carshow. Our goal now is to rework each event and expand on what was created. The Karting Race, in partnership with Provision, received certification as an official SWS World Series race last year and is now complete Race series. The GulfRun Race is currently undergoing the same changes, with hopefully more events in the calendar. We have some big plans for the Carshow which we are excited to share soon.

THE AUTOMOTIVE EDITION

You’ve had some generous and loyal sponsors throughout the decade and more of the Gulf Run. More than financial sponsors, many of these have become partners. How close is your relationship with these sponsors? We wouldn’t be where we are today without the trust, support and help of our sponsors. Our title sponsor is Zain Telecom – and aside from the financial backing in making these events possible, they also offer us tremendous assistance and advice on how to make our events a success. Furthermore, we have our pillar sponsors such as Slider Station, Al-Sawan, Jashanmal that have been sponsoring this event for several years now and have shaped our events by also providing services, venues and logistical support. Finally, we have sponsors such as

SEVENFRIDAY who have taken the GulfRun brand to the international stage by introducing a limited edition GulfRun watch. They have created an annual release limited to 50 units which is wildly successful in Asia and Europe. You’ve added many events around the core of the Gulf Run. The Car Show and the Kart race are probably the two best known. The Car Show was introduced to raise the profile of the Bahrain events. Today the Car Show is a full event in its own respect. Will we see this grow further? As mentioned earlier – after GulfRun 10, our goal is to go back to basics and see how we can rework each event to become bigger and better. We have some big plans for the Carshow in the upcoming year and look forward to sharing it with you shortly. We mentioned earlier that almost exclusively men attended the early editions of the Gulf Runs. Quickly though we saw a number of women join too. How is that shift developing? From day 1, we have always welcomed female participants in all of our events. In the past three years we have seen a tremendous growth in women participating in our events. Their skills have improved tremendously and we have no doubts that they will be on the podium in the near future. What lies in store for this year’s edition of the GulfRun? We love breaking records! The variety of cars and drivers’ skills have progressed year on year, and we believe that the records will be lowered once again at GulfRun11. Furthermore, there are several participants joining us from across the region, and we look forward to the friendly competition.

GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

Geneva Motor Show 2016 Wrap

N

ormally at international car shows it’s easy to pick trends. It’ll be plug-in hybrids, or SUVs, or self-driving cars - or simply cars with too much horsepower - that seem to lead most manufacturers in a particular direction.

GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

Aston Martin DB11 This year’s Geneva motor show did what people have praised it for down the years: it had everything. The Swiss city’s biggest motor event has always been popular with exhibitors and attendees because it’s no-one’s home turf. Tata meets Porsche and Subaru meets SsangYong on neutral territory, and the amount of attention anyone gets has nothing to do with a home advantage.

and small Q2 crossover, reminiscent of the A3 Sportback in styling, but as light and almost as compact as a B-segment hatch. Talking B-hatches, Ford extended its offering both up and down, signalling the arrival towards the end of the year of a “value” five-door called Ka+, while powering up its top Fiesta ST to 197bhp as a farewell gesture for a car that’ll be replaced in a year.

You gain visibility strictly on merit, which is why everyone seems to bring their best work to the expanding-but-stillmanageable collection of exhibition halls beside Geneva’s convenient airport.

Of course, crossovers were a continuing strong flavour among new cars. Maserati’s Levante has been flagged for some time, but still won lots of notice. Subaru had a convincing XV replacement and Ssangyong a concept called SIV-2 (its Korando replacement) that was so handsome that for once you didn’t laugh when they said it was similarly in size to the Range Rover Evoque.

Aston Martin probably took top honours with DB11, simply because a completely new Aston is such a rare event, and everyone seems to love the company at present. Andy Palmer has humanised it even more. The car was pronounced handsome - and different enough - by most critics, which was especially important for a company whose models have been labelled too similar for too long. If it was supercars you wanted, Bugatti was also there with the $3m Chiron, the Veyron successor that’s so powerful they’ll have to design new test tracks on most continents before it can demonstrate its full potential. McLaren was also there with its superb 570GT - everything this company does seems better than its last impressive effort. So were the tiny supercar makers Geneva always attracts: Apollo, Arash, Kahn, Rimac, Techrules and other unfamiliar names, this year with more convincing-looking efforts than ever. You always wonder what holds these manufacturers up, though this year you could see the case for many. Ferrari’s best effort was to change the FF’s name to GTC4 Lusso, which hardly seemed enough in this supercar company, but it will probably sell some cars anyway. Desirability came in small packages as well. Audi scored what will surely be an instant, international hit in the neat

Renault had a new and superbly-designed Scenic midsize MPV to prove that the design team assembled by car design’s man of the moment, Laurens van den Acker (who, incredibly, has revised the large and complex Renault range since 2009 - and invented a few other entries along the way) still can do no wrong. If it was funny names you wanted, DS was there with the E-Tense (a one-off electric supercar looking like a bigger Audi TT) and a still-wounded VW (whose clumps of officials stood about laughing too loud at their own jokes) had an interesting crossover convertible T-Cross Breeze. Porsche brought us down to earth with its 911R, not because the car lacked presence or desirability - far from it - but because it played to the different appeal of hardwon heritage and simplicity. Going in, some commentators dubbed it a potential star of Geneva, and it wasn’t quite that, but it certainly pushed at a part of the envelope others missed. Given Porsche’s ability to lead trends at Geneva (remember the showstopping debut of the 918 Spyder), perhaps a back to basics era is coming next.

THE PROFESSIONAL RACER

Mark Webber In conversation at Yas Marina

I

n February the Porsche Team concluded its second test of the year in Abu Dhabi. In total the current World Championship winning team spent eight days driving on the 5.554 kilometre long Formula One circuit in the United Arab Emirates. The main target was tyre testing with partner Michelin. Furthermore, new components on the Porsche 919 Hybrid for the 2016 season were tested. The programme included aerodynamic comparisons as well as testing the latest developments on the powertrain, including the hybrid system. After drivers Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb completed 2,059 kilometres in three days in Abu Dhabi early in February, the new drivers’ World Championship trio of Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber were on duty for five days and covered 4,142 km. We met Mark Webber, and got the inside track. How is testing going this month ahead of the WEC Championships? It’s going really good. The conditions here are great. To get a good track at this time of year is difficult but this [Yas Marina Circuit] is a good track for us in terms of stable conditions and nearby hotels for mechanics after a long day so the guys can rest. You hear the car running a lot, it’s got good mileage and that’s important for us. Every lap you do you learn a bit more and it just keeps adding up. So, so far so good! I’ve done a lot of driving. Did you work on the setup here in Abu Dhabi? Yeah, a little bit. We played with a few things. It’s really a week for Michelin because they have a large allocation of tyres to test and to produce for the start of the season. You cannot ring Michelin up two weeks before Silverstone and say there are some tyres we want, because there are 50 or 60 sets of tires so for them it is difficult. Is the car more driveable in comparison to last year? We made great progress with the car last year. The one-two at Le Mans was a great result and a bit of a surprise but a beautiful one for the programme and the whole team. Then after that we really made the proper steps in terms of beating Audi on the short tracks - that was a big validation for us. Now, we no longer have the big gains that we would have found last year. We are still learning but we really have to get into the details. Last year we found five seconds a lap but now it is difficult to find this amount of time because the car is really quite good!

THE PROFESSIONAL RACER

In terms of lap time are you slower than last year?

Is there anything specific you would have done differently?

Yes, because we have the new regulation with a bit less power, fuel flow and less fuel. Last time we were here [in Abu Dhabi] we had a high downforce so tomorrow we will try a similar setup, but the first four days haven’t been a fair comparison because we’ve been working on Le Mans guidelines. Also from our engineers’ side we think that numbers are pretty accurate from the FIA. Porsche say that what the FIA are proposing looks pretty close to the results we are getting, in terms of the lap time loss for Le Mans.

I would have liked to have done more go-karting in Europe but my parents couldn’t afford that, and I started late. I think I would have performed better over my career, if I had two seasons of European karting, but it wasn’t an option for me. My dad did everything perfectly, he couldn’t have done anything more for me but it was very difficult for us to make any impact so he really timed it as best he could. I had to come directly into car racing in Europe at the age of 18 or 19 and that’s just the way it was. There are definitely a few things that could have changed but that’s probably the most powerful one.

Is it more difficult from the technical side or is it a different job compared to Formula One? When you look at 20 years from when I started in 1997, a lot has changed. It still needs a driver to push the car to the limit but for sure it is more technical and probably a little bit less involved for the driver now. I know some young drivers coming through now that don’t know how to heel and toe because they don’t need to, but that’s just how these things work. Is it tough for the team to find a compromise on the car?

What is it like for drivers coming from F1 to get into Endurance Racing? It’s not easy to get in. Seats are limited and the system is such that they are taking guys on talent, rather than paid drivers. You are really looking at that next wave of drivers. But the opportunities are pretty limited. I would like to believe that F1 has bottomed out and you’ll see a lot more talent coming back on and I think that is good for the sport, and for that reason you will see less drivers trying to leave F1.

I think that was one of the reasons we made a very good step on car 17 at the end of last year. After Le Mans, we managed to get the three of us as close together as we have ever been, and I think it showed in the races that we were very strong. You have to make it that the car doesn’t know who is driving. That’s how to manage, to get all of us on the same page and we did that at the end of last year. It will be another tough season for you in terms of the championship, with the new Audi and new Toyota. We will have a look at the Prologue [at Circuit Paul Ricard in France for the official pre-season test] and see what happens there, but even then you don’t get the bigger picture. Silverstone is so different to Le Mans. We have the sprint races and of course now we have Mexico joining as well, but generally Le Mans is on its own in terms of car performance, car reliability and operationally for the team. It’s not just the 24 hour race, you have to get everything ready for the car. So both, Audi and Toyota, have to be strong. We are very respectful of them. Toyota were the champions the year before in 2014 and they did it easily. Looking back over the length of your career, do you see some points of unfinished business? When you look back you can always say you could have done things better, no question about it, but at the time you did your best. As a professional you do a lot of learning on the way and the treadmill doesn’t stop. At the time you think instinctively and you do what you think is right. It’s the same for anyone.

A

I think this series is a great way for me to build my motorsport career; it’s my pathway into world-class international motorsport at a competitive and high level. This is my first time participating in the series as a part of a team whereas in previous years, I wasn’t a part of one. Having been involved for 3 different seasons alone and joining this year with the Al Nabooda Racing team, I have built skill and experience on being a team player which was great. My teammate Jeffrey Schmidt was 1st in driving standings and I was 2nd and with our skillset, we were able to win over the team championship. I think it has been a great accomplishment for me to be a part of an incredible team and be able to secure the team championship in my first year of being a part of one. What lessons are learned? It may be a little early, and perhaps you need to reflect more, but how will your approach to next season be? In terms of lessons, the greatest one for me was learning how to be a part of team rather than simply driving for my own victory and not thinking of anything else. I know the tracks really well; I’ve driven on almost all the tracks before and had been behind the wheel of a Porsche GT3 Cup car before so it’s only a matter of continuing to build on my previous success and breaking my previous records. Something that will definitely be a key factor to work on would be my skills and confidence in driving and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East is the right platform to be on.

THE PROFESSIONAL RACER

How do you plan to spend the summer? My father and I haven’t taken a specific decision on what championships and type of cars I’ll be racing this summer but I will surely be behind the wheel at a race in England or Europe in general. Whether I’ll be participating in a full championship or a few races, I surely will be driving this summer so I can continue on this season’s success and learnings. When we spoke in the past there were plans for you to compete in a single-seater series. What happened to those plans, and are they likely to be revived? I’ve actually participated in a full GP3 championship in 2015 – it was an incredible experience that I have enjoyed very much. It was very difficult and competitive but my overall goals of entering GP3 were achieved in terms of my personal fitness and control of the car. I enjoy racing very much and it’s a sport I feel very passionate about growing in. As such, we are working hard to get to a single-seater race this summer and will see how it goes. This was the seventh season of GT3 races. During your time competing in the series you’ve moved from new-boy to being part of the establishment. Today you are a target for the youngsters coming in. How is your relationship with newer drivers? Are you in a position to give them advice? Like you’ve mentioned one of the reasons why I moved from new-boy to being a part of the establishment is because how this racing series is. We have built very strong bonds with

one another, on and off racing topics. Previous drivers have welcomed me and have passed on tips and support when needed. I remember Abdulaziz AlFaisal sharing a few “tips and tricks”. This is a pattern I appreciate and will want to continue the cycle as we grow and welcome new comers. Throughout the years you’ve been racing in the GT3 series, how have you seen the quality and intensity of racing change? Nothing else in the region provides us with a platform like this – motorsport careers are created and defined. Drivers are only the taking series more and more seriously with guanine rivalries and fierce competition. For the likes of Jaber Al Khalifa and Rob Frijns, this racing series fuels their passion for racing and Porsche. Additionally, to support that the quality and intensity of this racing series is only growing, we are seeing race drivers that participate in international races be a part of this region’s race. The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East helps many race drivers as well as myself to build on and maintain our driving form across the winter of motorsport in Europe. Do you feel the racing scene in Kuwait is developing in the way you’d hope? There is hope for the racing scene in Kuwait to grow and to grow fast. Hopefully I can inspire my fellow Kuwaitis that are passionate about the sport and to reflect on the regional and international paths that I have taken and define a motorsport career for themselves.

L.U.C XPS 1860 Less is more

T

he elegant and distinctive L.U.C XPS 1860 by Chopard pays homage to the first watch in the L.U.C collection: the L.U.C 1860 launched 20 years ago at the creation of Chopard Manufacture. This model with its hand-guillochĂŠ dial and ultra-thin case is a contemporary interpretation of a great classic, combining discreet elegance and sobriety with the first Chopard Manufacture movement: the L.U.C Calibre 96.01-L.

THE LUXE WATCHES

The L.U.C XPS 1860 is a classic. It belongs to the line of ultra-thin Chopard watches and features a small seconds at 6 o’clock. The year 1860 refers to the date when Louis-Ulysse Chopard founded his watch manufactory. A distinctively elegant watch The supremely elegant L.U.C 1860 foreshadowed the ultraslim trend. With its case featuring refined finishing, its contemporary Dauphine-type hands, its elegant applied hour-markers, the L.U.C. XPS 1860 offers a new take on this historical watch. Like all L.U.C watches, it is entirely dedicated to its owner’s service. An object endowed with exceptional finishing The L.U.C XPS 1860 is a decidedly contemporary timepiece. It has a 40 mm diameter that makes it truly universal. Its short, ergonomic lugs ensure a perfect fit on even the smallest wrists. With a total thickness of just 7.2 mm, it is very much part of the ultra-thin category. The L.U.C XPS 1860 comes

in a version with an 18-carat rose gold case, produced in a 100-piece limited series featuring a gold dial. Precision and fine craftsmanship dedicated to gentlemen Its Calibre 96.01-L, the first movement created by Chopared Manufacture, is automatically wound via a 22-carat gold micro-rotor, a rare horological speciality that is practical as well as ensuring slimness. It is endowed with Twin® technology, ensuring a 65-hour power reserve well beyond the usual standards for ultra-thin watches. Moreover, the L.U.C XPS 1860s is one of the very rare ultra-thin watches to display the date. Like all L.U.C watches with a seconds indication, it is chronometer-certified by the COSC. It bears the prestigious Poinçon de Genève quality hallmark that distinguishes the quality of its construction and its finishing as well as its resilience to the trials of daily life, as while also guaranteeing its exclusive nature. This refinement and these certifications betoken both the full maturity and the complete mastery achieved by Chopard Manufacture.

Piaget unveils a special series for Kuwait Inspired by the King of the desert; the Falcon

I

nspired by one of the significant themes of the shimmering Secrets and Lights collection, Swiss watchmaker and jeweller Piaget unveiled a special timepiece created on order for Kuwait. Available at the Piaget Boutique in Salhiya Mall, the timepiece draws its inspiration from the bird that is often referred to as the King of the desert; the Falcon. Piaget’s Secrets and Lights collection celebrates the mysterious and captivating light effects born of an invisible time and has the Falcon among one of its most popular themes.

Acute eyes, tapered wings, keen heels ... here the noble falcon reigns over the steppes. Bringing its majestic strength to the wrist and impressing with its piercing gaze, the majestic bird is the epitome of royalty in this timepiece. This is a wristwatch that is rife with precision due to the challenge of combining Piaget’s unique Métiers D’art with the record-breaking ultra-thin mechanical hand-wound movement 830p. A further highlight is the formation of the base in regal black enamel, one of the toughest colours to master. Truly bringing the falcon to life with added realism are the details on the feathers and the utilization of the Onyx that has been used to craft the intense eyes of the falcon. Rounding off the Altiplano 40mm timepiece are the finishing touches of alternating polish and matte, thereby lending the royal piece much more depth. The stunning timepiece that is limited to 27 pieces only, pays perfect tribute to the watchmaker’s know-how and imperial bird that is a proud part of the region’s heritage.

The Master Chronometer Revolution Continues More precision from Omega

O

ne of the great pleasures within the OMEGA brand is beginning a new year and witnessing the wave of innovative products and designs that are due to be launched. In 2016, this moment has an added edge of excitement and intrigue.

THE LUXE WATCHES

The highly publicised OMEGA Globemaster was one of last

year’s leading stars. Not only was it beautiful in design, but it

also carried the prestigious title of being the “World’s First Master

Chronometer”. As we promised, it would certainly not be the last. Today, I am proud to say that the Master Chronometer revolution is very much in-line with our objectives.

Master Chronometer certification represents a higher standard of excellence within the Swiss watchmaking industry. Many years of

dedicated work have gone into this new standard, resulting in an official certification from the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS).

For OMEGA, the Globemaster represented not only a major

milestone, but also the beginning of a new era in excellence. The plan is to certify the majority of their mechanical watches as

Master Chronometers by 2020. And from last year’s first step, the next phase has begun.

At Baselworld 2016, we saw a number of new movements and models that carry the Master Chronometer rating. These include

arl F. Bucherer offers the ideal timepiece for graceful immersion in a brand new design. The Patravi ScubaTec perfectly combines functionality, sportiness, and elegance, now in a 36 mm case. Its elegance is emphasized by the predominance of white, making it a stylish companion for the summer and beyond.

White is never out of place. Regardless of the shades that are currently in vogue, the color of purity suits everyone and everything. Carl F. Bucherer has therefore decided to dress the Patravi ScubaTec 36 mm entirely in white. White is synonymous with timeless elegance, and makes this watch a stylish companion both in and out of the water. While its robust stainless steel case can withstand pressures to a depth of 200 m, the watch accentuates slim wrists with its 36 mm diameter, ensuring a sophisticated look. All-white The white rubber strap perfectly complements the white dial and white ceramic bezel; however, a more discreet, slender stainless steel bracelet is also available. The adjustable folding clasp affords a high level of comfort to both strap options. Connected with the ocean The new Patravi ScubaTec reveals its connection with the ocean through the wave pattern adorning its dial. But it doesn’t stop there. The twelve raised hour-markers, all three hands, and the 12 o’clock marker on the bezel are all coated with Super-LumiNova that ensures they match the white dial during the day and glow light blue at night. Time to surface The automatic CFB 1950 movement provides a precise and reliable measurement of time. The rotating dive ring in stainless steel indicates dive and decompression times. For safety reasons, it can only be turned counter-clockwise, ensuring the wearer knows when it’s time to surface.

Dolce & Gabbana Summer 2016 Inspired by the Chinese Palace of Palermo, Sicily

W

hile sketching the collection, Mr. Dolce and Mr. Gabbana happened upon some of the old Dolce & Gabbana advertising campaign images shot by Ferdinando Scianna and featuring model Marpessa and they noticed the presence of Chinese pots in the photos. After seeing these pictures, they were inspired to return to Palermo and re-discover the beautiful and unique Chinese Palace.

THE LUXE STYLE

At the end of the 700 A.D., King Ferdinand of Bourbon, fond of hunting, and his wife Carolina came to Palermo, from Naples. At the time, the two nobles of Palermo purchased a large part of the land located on the hills; thus about 400 acres of the Parco della Favorita was born. The property already had a very extravagant house with Chinese influence and style. The king commissioned the most famous architect from Palermo, Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia (1729- 1814), to renovate the building without changing the style, which was distinctly Chinese. From the Palace, the Designers were inspired to infuse some of the most iconic elements of the Palace and they mixed them with the DNA of Dolce & Gabbana, thus creating a never-before-seen combination of Sicilian folklore and Chinese prints of birds, bamboo plants, flowers, etc‌

While researching this one-of-a-kind Palazzo in Palermo, the Designers understood that their typical style of combining elements coming from different cultures, actually has historical precedents like this one and that even in ancient times, artists looked at reality with eyes wide open to the whole world. Next to the brand’s signature tailored suits in printed silk, there are the infamous ripped jeans that after many seasons come back in full swing on the runaway and in the finale all the 102 models wore polo shirts adorned with the crown, the new symbol of the brand. The music is the one used by the Carabinieri (a branch of the Italian Police) during parades, while the set is a reinterpretation of the Favorita park, inside which the Chinese Palace is located.

or spring/summer 2016, the Tod’s collection for men applies the house philosophy of producing stylish, practical and relaxed design to a range of jackets, shoes and bags that illustrate the exceptional craftsmanship of Made-in-Italy.

Of course, Tod’s is most famous for its footwear, and for spring/summer 2016 there are a number of new developments in this area. Chief among them is the arrival of a new signature detail for the house: the Leo Clamp. This metal feature is found on the iconic Tod’s Gommino shoe and also on moccasins and loafers. A sturdy, geometric branded band, the Leo Clamp is produced through a process that involves traditional techniques of hot metal casting, thus demonstrating that Tod’s artisanal expertise is not limited to work with leather, but extends to the Italian tradition of fashioning metal, and, indeed, jewellery. Combining these two materials – leather and metal – is an art in itself, as the fine leather used on the shoe must not be damaged in the operation. Indeed, the Leo Clamp is treated with a special finish that not only gives it a particular shimmer, but also allows it to come into contact with leather without impairing it. As well as the Gommini that sport the Leo Clamp, other styles of the house’s signature shoe feature colour-block painted areas, and still others, woven leather uppers. The key bag for the season is the Eight Bag, which derives its name from its eight pockets – six internal and two external. Formal and sophisticated when closed, it opens out flat to function as a portable personal desk. There are two versions: precious leathers or crocodile models come in plain colours, while the calfskin style is in two-tone. When it comes to clothing, the emphasis is on a series of adaptable jackets. A blue suede field jacket – the Field Jacket Art Colour – velvety and lightweight, features white stripes over seams and pocket borders, which are applied by hand with water colour paint once the garment has been finished. Horn buttons and an internal brushed-metal zip provide a double closing mechanism, while shirt-style cuffs add a point of difference. Similarly, the brown Pilot Jacket Painting is also distinguished by hand painting. Composed of stretch leather, a special material, smooth to the touch, this lightweight leather jacket with notch lapel and bellows pockets is inspired by the military world.

Indian Motorcycle’s New Ride The Indian Springfield

S

implicity and versatility are hallmarks of minimalist touring powerhouse that converts to lean urban cruiser in minutes, featuring class-leading power, handling and comfort

THE LUXE BIKES

Named after the birthplace of Indian Motorcycle and designed for a pure touring experience, the Indian Springfield features a removable quick-release windshield and hard, all-weather, remote-locking saddlebags (also removable). It means that the Indian Springfield can be ridden as a fullyloaded touring model or stripped down into a cruiser by removing the windshield and saddlebags, offering the ultimate versatility. While maintaining the style and luxury that Indian Motorcycle is known for, the Indian Springfield carves out its own niche in the bagger and touring category. On the surface, it appears closely related to the Indian Chief Vintage (the most iconic-styled bagger in the Chief lineup), however Springfield was developed with a completely different, trunk-compatible chassis that allows for carrying higher loads. Designed for an un-obstructed view of the road ahead, the Indian Springfield has a model-specific quick-release windshield that creates a large air pocket for the rider and passenger. Comfort features, such as a rear buckhorn bar and adjustable passenger floorboards, come as standard along with the confidence-inspiring Anti-Lock Brakes, a tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic cruise control, powerful headlight and dual riding lights. Standard front and rear highway bars allow for the mounting of accessories and offer protection in a tip-over scenario. Brightly chromed forks, headlight housing, fender trim, engine covers, exhaust and handlebars with internal wiring bring the shine along for the ride. The tank-mounted gauges help manage information needed for the long haul including a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) indicator, cruise control indicator, tachometer, electronic speedometer with odometer, fuel gauge, dual trip meters, clock and more.

The quick release windscreen and saddlebags can be removed without tools or leaving behind ugly mounting hardware. The split seat, featuring a unique stitch pattern, can likewise be trimmed down to create a tight and low solo look, giving the Indian Springfield a truly dual personality. The unique chassis was designed to handle a wide load range. Featuring cartridge forks and an air-adjustable rear shock with 11.43cm (4.5 inches) of travel, the Indian Springfield is capable of carrying up to 242kg (533lb) for longer rides. The brakes feature a semi-floating design and steel braided brake lines to increase performance, lever feel and confidence. A high-resolution ABS system allows for smoother deceleration in both wet surface and aggressive braking in high-traction scenarios.

The Indian Springfield is available in Thunder Black and Indian Motorcycle Red.

Touring comfort and convenience can be further augmented with a full line of accessories including a tall and low windshield, heated driver and passenger seats, soft lowers and heated grips to keep riders comfortable in cool temperatures.

Powered by the highly regarded Thunder Stroke 111 engine, the Indian Springfield features 139Nm of torque to ride any highway in any weather.

The colour-matched accessory trunk adds 64-litres of capacity and the leather highway bar wraps provide an element of style to the front of the motorcycle.

Featuring a left side air intake, parallel pushrod tubes and down-firing exhausts, the Thunder Stroke 111 delivers not only the signature style for Indian Motorcycles, but does so with very little maintenance. With a direct gear-driven primary, a semi-dry sump oiling system that goes 8000 km between changes, and a host of low or no maintenance features, this is one powerplant that increases valuable touring time.

A performance exhaust made by Remus is available for a throatier exhaust note.

A few short minutes will allow the motorcycle to be converted into a sharp handling solo ride.

“The new Indian Springfield wasn’t designed to fill a space in our lineup; it was built to fill a space in the hearts of riders who value the rich heritage and fine craftsmanship of Indian Motorcycle and who want both a pure touring bike and a sleek urban cruiser,” said Steve Menneto, President of Motorcycles for Polaris Industries. “The Springfield’s unmatched versatility will win the hearts of motorcycling purists around the world.”

Someday, will all cars be made this way? BMW’s Vision Next 100

THE LUXE ZEITGEIST

German manufacturer BMW Group is celebrating its centenary year by unveiling a series of future-looking concept vehicles, the first of which is a shape-shifting autonomous car with artificial intelligence. The BMW Vision Next 100 is an attempt by the manufacturer to predict what cars will look like in the not-too-distant future when driverless vehicles are commonplace and artificial intelligence can learn and then predict a passenger’s behaviour. “If, as a designer, you are able to imagine something, there’s a good chance it could one day become reality,” said BMW’s

design chief Adrian van Hooydonk. “So our objective with the BMW Vision Next 100 was to develop a future scenario that people would engage with.” The concept vehicle features 800 moving triangles, which are set into the instrument panel and fitted to the side panels on the outside. The shape-shifting triangles – a feature BMW is calling Alive Geometry – would move to allow the car to communicate with the rider. For example, they could open up to reveal red undersides when hazards present themselves on the road.

La Petite Maison Beirut’s Second Bite

A

nyone who knows us, knows we’re not ones to gush. We appreciate quality for what it is, not for what it pretends to be, writes Simon Balsom. We much prefer quiet confidence over brash hyperbole. But, most of all, we know fine service when we’re getting it. The good news is, with the relocation of La Petite Maison to Beirut’s Downtown, getting a slice of this just got a whole lot more engaging. Something else you’ll know about us is that we don’t ‘do’ restaurant reviews. Who are we to tell you to favour the veal over the fish? What do we know about how well you like your steak done? But what we do feel qualified (even compelled) to comment upon is something that extends beyond subjective and fickle taste-buds – and that is a fine level of service. Waiting tables is an art, an art that is often overlooked in the rush to deliver ever more complicated dishes to the table. Staff should be attentive, yet unobtrusive. The food is always the star, and waiters should acknowledge this and let it remain the case. It’s a skill that General Manager Yannick Chaloyard and his crew at LPM have mastered. A knowledgable waiter, and one who can engage with the diner without appearing to want to become his best friend, is a rarity these days. Yannick’s team at LPM are consummate professionals and deliver the essence of the chef’s intentions with every visit to the table. They have a clear understanding of the food and, although I have no idea of their own personal tastes, they display a clear awareness of the importance of understanding the diner’s. Quality food is a given at La Petite Maison (I recommend you read elsewhere if you wish to learn reviewer’s favourites), but something else I’m happy to point you towards is the restaurant’s new location on Omar Daouk Street; the heart of Downtown. Finally the restaurant becomes part of the city. LPM was never destined to sit comfortably in its previous location – no matter how distinguished that location was. It’s now a walk-in-off-the-street destination – and through this delivers a sense of informality that belies its first-class quality. La Petite Maison Beirut reminds us that while tastes may change, fine service is something that should forever remain on the menu.

Egypt’s Somabay Expands Real Estate Offering

A

lready well-known as an exclusive holiday destination, Somabay is introducing unique real estate schemes to the Egyptian market. By Anna Amin, Editor, Cityscape magazine

Westin Residence

REAL ESTATE REPORT

Wadi Jebal Lodges Being one of Egypt’s most popular tourist regions, the Red Sea area is not short of holiday resorts that cater to various tastes and budgets. Whilst just 20 years ago it was mainly local fishermen who inhabited the Red Sea coastline, development in the region has fast forwarded over the past decade, especially in and around Sharm El-Sheikh, which has long lost is charm as an idyllic fishing village.

speed internet on the beach or a Gary Player-designed golf course, Sombay’s mission is to offer only the best. Lastly, El Missiri attributes one of the successes of Somabay to the fact that it built the destination first and later focused on creating communities. “With Somabay, people don’t buy into a promise. The promise is already there. What you see is what you get.”

Amidst everything there is on offer today – from allinclusive family resorts to specialised diving retreats, one development stands out from the crowd: Somabay. Being one of the first ever tourist developments on the Red Sea, planning for Somabay has begun as early as 1991. Located 40 kilometres south of Hurghada airport, Somabay sits on a 10 million square metre peninsula with a 5.5 kilometre long white sandy beach. The development comprises five luxury resort hotels - including the Kempinski, Sheraton and Westin Somabay - a world-famous spa, championship golf course, marina, as well as coveted diving and kitesurfing spots.

As Somabay has completed its overarching masterplan last year, which was developed by international architecture and design practice Benoy, the company now focuses on pushing forward with its real estate offerings.

In addition, Somabay has a range of real estate offerings ranging from seaside apartments to villas and townhouses. Cityscape magazine sat down for a chat with Ibrahim El Missiri, CEO of Abu Soma Development Company, when the company was visiting Dubai in December to promote the destination to the GCC market. We asked him what differentiates Somabay from other holiday resorts in the Red Sea region. “Its location of course,” El Missiri is quick to say, explaining that no other development in Egypt can claim to sit on its own peninsula with 11 kilometres of varied coastline. In addition to its unique location, at Somabay everything is state-of-the-art, with “no expenses spared.” Be it ultra-high-

Somabay real estate ‘Become a citizen of Somabay’ - this is the slogan with which Abu Soma Development Company aims to reach buyers into Somabay’s real estate offering this year. “Well known as an exclusive holiday destination on the Red Sea coast, Somabay has recently been making a big push on its real estate front and released a few unique products to the Egyptian market,” explains El Missiri. “Originally we had the traditional marina and golf apartments and a few villas, but we then wanted to focus on creating communities,” he adds. The first new product Somabay introduced is called the Lodges – these consist of compact villas set atop the cliffs of the peninsula (which rises up to 26 metres from sea level). “In Egypt, you won’t find anything of that type to compare to, making it very unique and hence this has been a very successful product. This year we were able to sell two phases of the Lodges,” El Missiri says.

REAL ESTATE REPORT

Kempinski Hotel In addition to the Lodges, Somabay has launched a multitude of branded residence projects. “A lot of people appreciate the convenience of not having to take care of their holiday home so branded residences are the perfect solution for them. Our next project is introducing branded residences with the Westin as well as ‘lifestyle’ residences, meaning residences which are not necessarily ultra-luxurious but offer a more hip and young lifestyle such as promoted by the Breakers hotel for example, which is also a unique product in the Egyptian market.” Lastly, with Soma Breeze, Somabay brings something unique to the Egyptian market, namely apartments by the sea. “The Egyptian coastline is all about villas and there are no apartments directly by the sea. Soma Breeze provides apartments from studios to 4-bedrooms which are built on the tip of the peninsula so they cannot block anybody’s view,” El Missiri explains. One of the reasons why Somabay decided to introduce apartments is also because it wanted to ensure that expatriates are buying into Somabay, El Missiri explains. “Our buyers are comprised of an interesting mix. We have a lot of Germans, Swiss, Austrians, Belgians, and French etc.

Wadi Jebal Lodges interior

Recently we’ve also started to get buyers from the Middle East including from Lebanon and Saudi Arabia which shows that as our real estate offerings grow, more locals are buying into Somabay.” Per square metre prices range from USD 1,500 for smaller units and go up to USD 2,500 per square metre. Sizes range from 60 sqm for the smallest apartments up to 350 sqm with the bulk of units sitting in the 150 sqm range. Way forward for tourism Egypt’s tourism industry has suffered heavily following the period of the so-called Arab Spring and continues to be affected by security issues. When thinking about visiting Somabay, El Missiri says it is important to put things into geographical perspective. “The reality is that all the travel warnings and security concerns are related to the Sinai Peninsula and flight cancellations relate to Sharm El-Sheikh but not to Hurghada which is the airport that serves us,” El Missiri explains. “The Hurghada region has not really seen any incidents in the past years so our job is getting the message out to people that it is safe to travel here,” he adds.

REAL ESTATE REPORT

Being the peninsula that it is, Somabay is sealed off from the mainland and has its own independent security. The resort itself has made a huge investment in security this year, El Missiri affirms. “We need to educate people that Egypt has many different regions and is not to be seen as one place of threat – people tend to exaggerate things, while in reality the area where all the noise is happening is a small dot on the map,” he says. And what can the government do to promote Egypt as a safe tourist destination we ask? The answer to this lies in introducing more direct flights, thinks Missiri. “The internet has changed the travel industry to a great extent. The tour operator business which is normally the reactive business is now more driven by direct bookings. The only way direct bookings can be successful however is to have more direct flights (not charter flights).

Westin Residence

“In my view this is what the government should do. The solution for Egypt’s destinations such as Somabay etc. are more direct flights from international destinations. We’ve seen Turkish Airways doing it and sometimes British Airways. The business is there and it’s very attractive and this is what the government needs to drive,” El Missiri says on a final note. Somabay real estate at a glance Wadi Jebal Lodges Set atop the cliffs of the peninsula, Wadi Jebal offers unmatched views of the Red Sea’s crystal clear waters, offering ample surrounding open spaces and privacy. The Bay Villas The Bay Villas offer direct access to sandy beaches and the luxury of lagoon-front living with a variety of homes such as standalone villas, twin villas, attached villas and studio apartments. The Reef Villas Located on the northeast coastline of Somabay, the Reef Villas offer various architectural designs while owners are offered custom-made furnishing and finishing packages with impeccable design and quality. The Marina Residences With distinctive designs, finishing and furnishing packages, the Marina Residences are located in the beating heart of Somabay, steps away from the finest restaurants, premium shops, and with a lively atmosphere. The Golf Townhouses Surrounded by the lush green golf course fairways and scenic lagoons, the property is defined by its intimate neighbourhood setting and relaxing private gardens with both lagoon and sea views.
