THE BESPOKE EDITION The most unique of luxuries

ISSUE NUMBER 90 - NOVEMBER 2017

JUST A THOUGHT Dear Passionate Readers, I have to admit, there is nothing more fascinating in my eyes, than a Bespoke life! As a young high school student, I entered my first philosophy class to be asked something that has marked and been marking my life ever since… “Do you want to be the blackboard that people write their thoughts on, or do you want to be the hand holding the chalk as you write your own life?” Since that day, all I ever lived for is to be... me. Regardless, and in spite of! It is so easy to fall into the herd’s mentality, or the standard norms of our times... and there is great comfort in that … but to say that I have lived, that I have experienced life, I have to remain true to myself, my beliefs and my passions. Regardless, and in spite of! Life will do its best to impact me, but the question remains… What am I doing to impact life? May you always live your own Bespoke life, and may you always leave your mark wherever you go, whatever you do… Till next issue….

THE BESPOKE EDITION

There was a time, and not so very long ago, when pretty much everything you’d have either bought or owned was made bespoke in some form or fashion. It would have been made to order - or made on request at least - even if it followed a standard plan held within the artisans hands and doubtlessly passed down through the generations. Then came a realisation of the commercial benefits of ‘mass production’. Industry began to see that in the standardization of items lay a beauty all of its own. Whilst it’s impressive that thousands of identical cars, watches, suits and perfumes can be produced, it’s not what everyone wants all of the time. Fortunately, there remain a healthy and growing band of manufacturers who recognise this, and far from becoming extinct, bespoke is in the ascendency. Over the coming pages you’ll discover the stories of those who are, in our opinion, doing it amongst the best of all. They each have acquitted themselves admirably in the sphere of luxury - balancing numbers of production with the mnaintenance of exclusivity. For those customers of theirs who seek the ultimate in exclusivity, there will be much to read here and useflu information to be gained. For the rest of us, we can merely marvel at how the skills of the craftsmen are trained to match the infinite wish-lists of their clients.

Bespoke In the English language of old, the verb bespeak had various meanings, including “to speak,” “to accuse,” and “to complain.” In the 16th century, bespeak acquired another meaning - “to order or arrange in advance.” It is from that sense that we get the adjective bespoke, referring to clothes and other things that are ordered before they are made.

Rolls-Royce Bespoke

T

Perfecting creations; creating perfection

hroughout its history, Rolls-Royce has lived by one main maxim, that is to “take the best that exists, and make it better”. Sir Henry Royce said, “Small things make perfection, but perfection is no small thing”. Today, Rolls-Royce allows you, the customer, to add those small things in search of perfection. To be presented with an opportunity to ‘improve’ a Rolls-Royce is perhaps not the way to explain this. Rather, we’re presented with an opportunity to personalise a RollsRoyce to the nth degree. Who better to take us through the process than Lars Klawitter, General Manager of the marque’s Bespoke programme. “Take the best that exists, and make it better” Follow @rollsroycecars and in Kuwait @alialghanimsons

THE BESPOKE EDITION

“Rolls-Royce IS Bespoke – it is ingrained in our brand’s DNA to provide our discerning patrons with an unparalleled scope for personalization”

How long has the Bespoke Programme been in operation? Rolls-Royce IS Bespoke – it is ingrained in our brand’s DNA to provide our discerning patrons with an unparalleled scope for personalization. The history of the marque is rooted in Bespoke through coach-building where customers would approach Rolls-Royce to build a bespoke body on the chassis of a car, which enabled our clients to indulge in the ultimate of automotive personalization. A modern day example of Rolls-Royce’s coach-building is shown in our recent launch of Sweptail – an entirely Bespoke creation realized for one single customer. Are you getting more interest/bespoke custom year on year? Our limited collections serve to inspire customers, and as such, we continue to witness a huge demand. In fact, in 2016 we saw record results for our Bespoke Programme. Almost every Phantom, Ghost, Wraith and Dawn produced in 2016 contained specially-commissioned and unique Bespoke design elements, reaffirming Rolls-Royce as the world’s only truly handcrafted luxury motor car. As we look to the end of 2017, we have seen a continuation of that trend. While it’s a worldwide opportunity, have you found there’s been more demand in this region? Why do you think that is? The Middle East has consistently been our top region for Bespoke globally. There is a huge appetite for personalization in the region and we have seen that our customers take a lot of pride in their mode of transport and like to stand out. It

is always fun to work with customers who want to push the boundaries of Bespoke in their motoring masterpieces and challenge us to test the limits. What are the most challenging materials you’ve had to work with and why? Our customers have in the past asked us to include kangaroo, ostrich and alligator skins into seats. These are challenging materials to work with and get right, but our expert leather workers at Goodwood have the skills to deliver such intricate work. One of the most difficult requests was putting a horsehair inlay into a racing horse owner’s dashboard, but we were glad to oblige. Excitingly, one customer requested that we use a tree from his estate for the veneer and we were able to make it happen.

“Our customers have in the past asked us to include kangaroo, ostrich and alligator skins into seats”

What sort of testing do these materials go through to ensure their longevity? Our leather comes from only mature bull hides, found in carefully controlled and closely monitored breeders. The hides come from herds bred for their meat, in condition as close to natural as possible, producing hides as a by-product. The hides are drum-dyed rather than painted, so that the color permeates right through the leather. This process also imparts a natural suppleness to the leather and means it will never squeak nor crack. Wood veneers used for the interior trim include figured mahogany from West Africa, tulipwood, walnut burr and bird’s

All the wood used for veneers is sourced from sustainable forests. industries that require special skills such as woodworking and leatherworking skills.

More generally, each individual Rolls-Royce that leaves Goodwood is subjected to a series of stringent tests. These include tests for Noise, Vibration and Harshness on a rolling road and in an anechoic chamber; a monsoon test in a rainmaker chamber to ensure complete watertightness in the harshest conditions; a millimeter by millimeter testing of paint finish by hand and a final test drive by our engineers before it is handed over to each individual customer. This is possible because of Rolls-Royce’s sustainable management of the number of vehicles it produces. It is only when you produce approximately 4,000 vehicles that you have the resource to offer this level of individual perfection.

Where do most of your Bespoke customers come from? Which are your biggest markets and which ones are more reserved? Customers that use our Bespoke Programme come from all over the world. Middle Eastern owners are particularly interested in individualisation and as such, in 2013 around 99% of both Ghosts and Phantoms sold across the region featured various levels of Bespoke content, followed by 98% of North American customers and 95% of European owners creating Bespoke Phantoms.

Are people not strictly in the automotive industry involved to help deliver Bespoke requests? Absolutely, a large portion of our employees at Goodwood do not to come from the automotive industries, rather

Can you reserve colours and trim for an individual customer and guarantee that they’re not used on another car? Yes, though so far this has mostly pertained to paint colours. We have many examples of colours developed specially for individual customers that are for them, and them alone.

Which models tend to get the most Bespoke treatment, the Phantom, Ghost or Wraith? Levels of personalisation on Phantom were highest around the world in 2013 compared to other Rolls-Royce models, followed by the Ghost. However, all three models surpassed their revenue targets this year.

Ferrari Tailor-Made

Creativity, sophistication, originality of materials, craftsmanship and attention to detail

hat are you going to do when you want your Ferrari to stand out from the crowd? The marque’s Tailor-Made program is what you need. Continuing a longstanding Maranello tradition which began in the 1950s and 60s, when clients personalized their cars as a matter of course and enjoyed huge freedom when it came to materials, colors and finish, today’s results are genuinely unique cars tailored to suit the desires of each individual owner. Project Ferrari

Tailor-Made

Tailored specifically

to the requests of each client

That prestigious past has now been revived through a program that permits owners to specify every last detail of their Ferrari, from the exterior livery color to the cabin trim, via an unprecedented choice of finishes, accessories, materials, treatments and colors. All of which are the fruit of the ongoing research and development by the Ferrari Styling Center, taking inspiration from the company’s core values of innovation, elegance and passion. Owners are assisted and guided through the selection process by their own Personal Designer who is charged with guaranteeing that the resulting cars are both unique and consistent with the Ferrari brand and its tradition. Once the car’s details have been defined, the client can then track all of the various processes involved in its creation, right up until they take delivery or go to Maranello to collect their car. Scuderia, Classica and Inedita are the three different collections to choose from to create bespoke Ferraris through unique combinations of the many options available.

“Clients make their personalisation choices on site in Maranello

A focus on reflecting core values of innovation, elegance and passion

The Scuderia collection is very much an homage to the track, a fact reflected in the materials and finishes it includes. The list of options ranges from carbon fiber trim to technical fabrics, chamois and rubberized leather, Alcantara, micro-fibers, Kevlar, satin-finish and matte metals. In the Classica collection, the styling cues and features are given a more modern yet still classic look, through the use of the latest materials and production techniques. Elegant pastel colors of the past; the use of vintage leather, or wool, cashmere or velvet; special treatments for the hard areas of the cabin to match the exterior; chromed elements, stitching details and more natural leathers are just some of the options available. Inedita is the most experimental of the three collections and Ferrari feels it may well give rise to some of the classic trims and finishes of the future. Denim, bold leather upholstery, suit fabrics and technical fabrics are just a few of the innovative and intriguing options available to owners who choose to personalize their cars from the Inedita collection.

“The programme offers clients a choice of three collections, each one inextricably linked to Ferrari’s DNA: Scuderia, Classica and Inedita” Clients make their personalisation choices on site in Maranello where they are flanked by a personal designer who will assist them in creating their bespoke Ferrari right down to the tiniest detail. This will encompass everything from livery colours to cabin trims, finishes and accessories of which there is an unprecedented selection of materials, treatments and hues. Owners can opt for luxury traditional materials, such as cashmere, or more casual, contemporary ones of the likes of denim. Needless to say, there are plenty of high tech options, such as carbon-fibre, too. The end result, however, is in each and every instance, a standard of exclusivity completely unmatched anywhere in the automotive sector. In fact, this is the first time many of the materials are being used or approved for use on cars.

Creativity, sophistication, originality of materials, meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail are the bywords of the Tailor Made programme which offers three collections inextricably linked to Ferraris’ own DNA: Scuderia, Classica and Inedita. Scuderia takes its lead from Ferrari’s sporting history with racing world-inspired selections. Classica, on the other hand, offers a modern take on the styling cues and features of Maranello’s great iconic GTs. Lastly, Inedita is designed for owners with a penchant for experimentation and innovation. Ferrari Tailor Made is the product of the Ferrari Style Centre’s ongoing research and development work, itself focused on reflecting core values of innovation, elegance and passion.

“An MSO Personal Commission is the highest level of partnership between a customer and McLaren Special Operations, undertaken to design, develop and create unique interpretations of McLaren cars, expertly tailored to meet the exact requirements of the owner” says Jolyon Nash, Executive Director, Global Sales and Marketing, McLaren Automotive “A typical MSO Personal Commission extends beyond paint colours and materials and finishes to encompass changes to body and interior design and also dynamic and powertrain enhancements as required. The result is a McLaren personalised by MSO to become a car that is literally one of a kind – or in the case of these stunning MSO R cars, one of a matched pair.” The two MSO R cars, which have the same external, internal and mechanical specifications, are finished in a striking yet understated Liquid Silver – the Coupé in satin and the Spider in gloss finish – with a carbon fibre central stripe. Immediately identifiable as a matched pair, both have the same design of twin-element rear wing, with front dive planes to further enhance aerodynamic performance.

Vacheron Constantin Ateliers Cabinotiers

The Geneva-based Maison’s fine watchmaking department

F

or more than 260 years, Vacheron Constantin has been creating unique and rare models conceived by master-watchmakers constantly pushing the limits of excellence, or commissioned by demanding collectors. This horological tradition is more vibrantly alive than ever thanks to its Les Cabinotiers department which, while ensuring respect for the values of the Maison and of Fine Watchmaking as a whole, dreams up exceptional timepieces.

The role of the “Atelier Cabinotiers Special Order” department is to perpetuate the unique expertise of their master watchmakers, who work in the great Genevan tradition of the Cabinotiers watch workshops. The Atelier Cabinotiers offers clients a highly exclusive service: that of producing unique timepieces, entirely custom-made and created on an individual commission basis. The custom-made watches are surrounded by secrecy and confidentiality. Often embodying a dream or passion, they are an expression of aspiration, legendary because they are spoken of more often than they are actually seen. No collections of catalogues here, only a listening ear. It all starts with a narrative: the client’s private story. A history fan might ask for the reproduction of a painting by one of the great masters in grand feu enamel on the dial; an aspiring Romeo might want his piece to chime once a year on his Juliet’s birthday; or a grand complications enthusiast might dream of owning a groundbreaking mechanical masterpiece.

All requests, from the most simple to the most ambitious, are meticulously examined by an ethical committee set up specifically to ensure that only projects that correspond perfectly with the values and traditions of Vacheron Constantin are approved; allowing the realization of a dream for the future owner. A tradition with strong historical roots In the 18th century, prestigious clients were accustomed to placing orders with the cabinotiers, the watchmaking artisans who forged Geneva’s reputation. This tradition has been pursued without interruption by Vacheron Constantin. From Tsar Alexander II to the New York banker Henry Graves Jr and from car manufacturer James Ward Packard to crowned heads such as Fouad I and Farouk of Egypt, all were fervent collectors of one-of-a-kind models created by the Maison. The Manufacture’s Les Cabinotiers department perpetuates this distinctive spirit reminiscent of Geneva in the Age of Enlightenment. The timepieces here are born from special

“from the hands of these artists come timepieces that are unique examples of their kind throughout the world developments undertaken by accomplished watchmakers. These vivid expressions of horological excellence speak volumes by their very essence rather than being mere showpieces. Each new project is driven by an experienced, multi-disciplinary team composed of designers, mechanical engineers, micromechanical engineers and master-watchmakers. Together, they transpose bold watchmaking feats into cuttingedge technologies, with the only imposed limits being a determination to remain true to the values conveyed by the Maison for more than 260 years. Les Cabinotiers also relies on the unique artistic and craftsmanship competencies of Vacheron Constantin in enhancing the aesthetics of its horological prowess. The guillocheurs, enamellers, engravers and gem setters of the Maison are some of the last remaining artisans who still master the intricacies of their professions and proudly perpetuate an age-old heritage mingling intuition with expertise. The expert hands of all these key players give rise to timepieces that are unique in the world, representing the very peak of Fine Watchmaking and destined to leave an indelible imprint on the history of the Manufacture. Watchmaking masterpieces The Reference 57260 watch unveiled in 2015 perfectly crystallises the vocation of the Les Cabinotiers department. This double-sided horological work of art is distinguished by its unfathomable complexity and wealth of technical innovations. Developed and crafted by three master-watchmakers, it called for eight years of development. The grand adventure of the Reference 57260 watch was nurtured by a will to transcend the boundaries of feasibility as well as exceptional expertise, backed by sophisticated mathematical calculations. It has now established itself as the new benchmark in the field of Haute Horlogerie with its 57 complications (many of which are unprecedented) and thereby further enhances the enduring renown of the Geneva-based Manufacture. It is in the same rich vein as Reference 57260 that Vacheron Constantin is presenting two exceptional new models at the SIHH 2017: Les Cabinotiers Celestia Astronomical Grand Complication 3600, an astronomical watch with 23 complications; and Les Cabinotiers Symphonia Grande Sonnerie 1860, a watch equipped with a grande and petite sonnerie as well as a minute repeater.

THE BESPOKE EDITION

“craftsmen still master traditional arts, continuing age-old traditions”

Vacheron Constantin’s “Atelier Cabinotiers Special Order” service revives the spirit of 18th-century Geneva. At this period prestigious dignitaries from the various European courts came to order directly from the “Cabinotiers”, the watchmaking craftsman who had made the city’s reputation. To take advantage for as long as possible of the best midday light, these craftsmen preferred to locate their workshops on the top floors of the buildings. These workshops, often cramped and sometimes located in attics directly beneath the roof, illuminated by numerous windows, built a solid reputation for the quality of their work. They soon came to be called “cabinets”, and their occupants were known as “Cabinotiers.” Today the Atelier Cabinotiers brings together professional watchmakers who combine the highest standards of excellence with a spirit of dedication. Together they strive to turn the wildest dreams into technical reality. Vacheron Constantin’s designers and Research and Development department make their contribution, before specially assigned teams take over the responsibility for the development and pursuit of the projects concerned. A special company representative assures permanent contact between the latter and the purchaser. Added to this team, there are the extraordinary artistic skills of the master guillocheurs, enamellers, engravers and gem-setters, who are among the few remaining craftsmen to still master these traditional arts, proudly continuing age-old traditions. From the hands of these artists come timepieces that are unique examples of their kind throughout the world, representing the pinnacle of Fine Watchmaking, and which will one day take their rightful place, as all the creations of the Manufacture have done before them since 1755, in the heritage and archives of Vacheron Constantin.

THE BESPOKE EDITION

What is worth being made bespoke? You’ve made the commitment to going bespoke. Where’s best to begin? When you’re going to go bespoke, it’s a unique chance to get things more right for you than they will ever be when buying ready-to-wear. Here’s where to invest your time and money wisely.

Bespoke jacket The standard by which everything else must be judged A jacket is worth having bespoke more than any other item, both in terms of cut and of construction. The three-dimensional nature of a bespoke cut, dealing as it does with pitch, angle and curve, is of greatest benefit on the torso, which is far more irregular than the legs. This is a major reason why a bespoke jacket looks so good. Bespoke construction then creates structure around this torso. A hand-padded chest creates a flattering yet natural shape, while a structured collar keeps the jacket closely around the neck, anchoring the jacket. No other bespoke item has this difference in quality compared to RTW. Bespoke coat A coat is the second-most valuable thing to have made bespoke. Largely, this is because it has the same benefits of a jacket, above. It is usually in a heavier cloth, which might appear to be more forgiving RTW, but then we all know how great bespoke looks in a heavy cloth. Like pure sculpture. Bespoke shoes Bespoke shoes don’t have many advantages over RTW in

terms of construction any more. Several brands offer handwelting (Saint Crispin’s, Stefano Bemer) and others have topend uppers, oak-bark soles and tight waists (Gaziano & Girling among others). There are some more differences in terms of fit. No matter how many sizes and widths a brand offers, a bespoke fit always has the potential to be better. But then more brands are now offering altered lasts as well – such as Saint Crispin’s –that approach bespoke. Bespoke shirt There are no construction advantages to a bespoke shirt; it is all about fit. And while a bespoke fit is often superior, this is largely in the body of the shirt – which creases; which often remains hidden; and which has to be looser than a jacket to allow one to sit down. A good fit in a shirt is important, but it can often be achieved made-to-measure, or even altered RTW. The most important thing in a shirt is the collar, which may be better in bespoke or may not. If you can find a RTW collar you like, that sits gracefully with tie and without, and is the right height for your neck, you’re most of the way there.

should see this at the beginning of next year. Of course, we’re working with the Behbehani family on this. There are two steps for this. As well as our own team and the family working together, we sit down with clients too. We learn what they need, what they’d like to see, what are their wishes in terms of design – we consider all of this. I’m often asked how I’d introduced Hublot to someone who doesn’t already know us. I’ll give you an example linked to another market. Let’s take the brand in China. It’s a new market. It’s a very interesting market. Everyone wants to do well there. Of course, we want to develop our business there. We did a study to find out what the people like – in China they like three-hand watches, a white dial, not too sporty and with a brown leather strap. I would say this is what is sold the most. So, we created products like this and, do you know what, they didn’t sell. They wanted the original Hublot style. Our clients in China, and I think it’s a case that can be applied worldwide, are the young generation. Their average age is around 30, and when you look at what we’re selling in China they are all the most sporty and bold designs. It’s interesting. The young generation doesn’t want to buy the same watch as their parents. I believe this is why we are so successful – because we always do something different. Always different, always unique. Techframe Ferrari Tourbillon Chronograph, launched earlier this year in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Ferrari. The completely new collection was produced in 70 limited pieces for each version, commemorating 70 years of Ferrari, with whom Hublot shares many values and a quest for perfection. Marco Tedeschi, spoke with us, “We’re here to celebrate the reopening of the boutique at The Avenues. We reopened because we completely refurbished the boutique with the latest concept.

When we first opened the boutique, it was a very new concept designed by the famous architect Peter Merino, and the concept was very special. Actually, the previous concept in Kuwait was the same as in New York, Tokyo, Abu Dhabi and Paris. As part of the new strategy, we worked again with Peter – who recently created our flagship on Fifth Avenue in New York – and brought this to Kuwait. The main difference is in the colours we’ve used – we’ve moved from browns towards black and grey tones. This reflects the image of the brand. 2017’s Ferrari collaboration was amazing – we had a very successful event at the beginning of the year. We notice that other watch brands are following us today – but this is good. When you’re being followed it means you’re successful. We are now working on the future with a new Kuwait Edition. We

Creation of a Microcosm

A

Snapshots of the assembly of the Tourbograph Perpetual “Pour le Mérite”

t the Geneva Salon in January, A. Lange & Söhne presented the fifth watch with the appellation “Pour le Mérite”. It unites five complications and pays tribute to classic watch-making as a paragon of true perfection. Given the numerous complex mechanisms, the assembly of the 684-part manufacture calibre is a formidable challenge. Only the best watch-makers can put together the individual subsystems with the precision required for them to interact flawlessly in the end.

WATCHES

Dresden watchmaker Ferdinand Adolph Lange laid the cornerstone of Saxony’s precision watchmaking industry when he established his manufactory in 1845.

“Substance over semblance” is the underlying motto of the Tourbograph Perpetual “Pour le Mérite”. Two of its five complications serve the sole purpose of improving rate accuracy. The fusée-and-chain mechanism ensures the smooth flow of torque from the mainspring barrel to the balance. Isolated from the influence of gravity, it oscillates inside the rotating tourbillon cage. The split-seconds chronograph is controlled in the classic manner with two column wheels. In a space-saving configuration, the module for the an-alogue perpetual calendar is built around the tourbillon. The assembly of the movement is a venture of much greater complexity than meets the eye. “The harmonious interaction of the five complications does not even begin to do justice to the amount of work involved,” says Anthony de Haas, Director of Product Development at A. Lange & Söhne. In fact, no two assembly processes are alike. “Even if each of the 684 parts is manufactured strictly within the micrometre tolerance range, the watchmaker still has to perform many minute adjustments to ensure that all the mechanisms work to-gether perfectly as envisaged by the calibre engineers,” de Haas muses. He adds: “On the part of the watchmakers, this calls for the utmost of technical comprehension, experience-based knowledge, manual virtuosity and virtually infinite patience.” Crafting such a mechanical microcosm can only be entrusted to a small team of specialists who, over the course of the years, have honed their skills with sophisticated horological creations such as the Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar “Terraluna” and the Dato-Graph Perpetual Tourbillon. Top: Assembly of the fusée-and-chain mechanism - Once the watchmaker has wrapped the delicate chain around the previously assembled mainspring barrel, they can integrate both components into the basic movement. The chain is then attached to the fusée. The planetary gearing or differential must be mounted first. Inside the fusée, it ensures that the flow of power from the mainspring barrel to the escapement is not interrupted while the watch is being wound. The 38-part mechanism handles this function in a space with a diameter of merely 8.6 millimetres. Left: Assembly of the fusée-and-chain mechanismUsing the ratchet wheel placed on the square barrel arbor, the watchmaker can adjust the final basic tension of the mainspring.

THE LIFE REFINED

Assembly of the tourbillon - Assembling the tourbillon is one of the most difficult tasks in crafting the TOURBOGRAPH PERPETUAL “Pour le Mérite”. Before the filigreed component can be positioned in the basic movement, it will already have undergone a multitude of preparatory steps. The long road to perfection begins with the preliminary assembly of individual parts. Initial assembly is followed by adjustments, disassembly, final finissage and final assembly. The tourbillon bridge firmly secures the cage to the chronograph bridge as it rotates suspended between two diamond endstones. The newly introduced curved shape of the tourbillon bridge posed new challenges to the finishing specialists. The black-polish technique applied to the surface of the steel part is finished to a mirror gloss so immaculately that incident light is reflected in only one direction. The surface shines only when viewed from that angle. From all other perspectives, it appears to be jet black.

Assembly of the chronograph and rattrapante mechanism The chronograph and rattrapante mechanism is located on the movement side. It consists of a total of 136 parts. During the assembly phase, all of the individual parts of the elaborate column-wheel ensemble are manually tweaked and adjusted. This is because the wheels, levers, arbors and springs involved in the complex switching sequences must interact in a precisely defined order within fractions of a second to prevent mechanical conflicts.

Assembly of the perpetual calendar and the moon phase - The perpetual calendar correctly displays the different durations of the months in the 100-year cycle of the Gregorian calendar. In other words, it only needs to be corrected by one day in the year 2100. This is ensured by the 48-month wheel of the calendar module that has recesses and protrusions for each month. The seven-stage transmission for the moon phases is calculated so precisely that it only needs a one-day correction after 122.6 years of uninterrupted operation. The deep blue hue of the white-gold lunar disc is the result of a patented coating process. Interference effects function like a filter that hides all non-blue colour spectra of the incident daylight. The crisply contoured stars are cut out of the coating with a laser beam.

Rado True Face

Exclusive watch created in collaboration with Polish designer Oskar Zieta Oskar Zieta is an architect and the founder and CEO of Zieta Prozessdesign. Born in 1975, he graduated from the Swiss Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule in Zurich, where he worked as a research assistant in the Computer Aided Architectural Design department. Zieta has received numerous design accolades, including the German Design Council Prize and the Red Dot Award. Oskar Zieta recently unveiled his biggest and most important sculpture, Nawa, which features the same blown-up metal technology that inspired the Rado True Face.

S

wiss watchmaker Rado is giving its latest design collaboration a time to shine. The Rado True Face, co-created with innovative Polish architect Oskar Zieta, is a limited edition timepiece that combines Zieta’s signature reflective surfaces with the classic design and high-tech construction of the Rado True family. The Rado True Face is housed in matt grey high-tech ceramic, lending the timepiece versatile beauty and impressive scratch resistance in a lightweight package. The satin-finish neutral tone of the case and bracelet form a harmonious contrast with the centrepiece of the watch: the high-gloss metallic dial. Gently concave in structure, the dial consists of a disc of stainless steel that has been polished to achieve a mesmerizing reflective finish. The reflective properties of the dial are further maximized by the addition of an unexpected detail: The underside of the matt grey hands has been given a rose gold-coloured finish, allowing them to be reflected in a different hue. Made to be noticed The True Face is a natural continuation of Zieta’s other work with polished stainless steel: a series of perfectly polished mirrors and furniture entitled Plopp which, thanks to his experimental design approach, appear to have been blown up like a balloon. “I am working in many parallel spheres: science, architecture, furniture design and art,” explains Zieta. “I’m always experiencing a lack of time, yet still needing it to create, aiming for something unique and timeless.”

Zieta’s passion for materials research made him a natural partner for Rado, a brand known for pioneering the use of materials such as hardmetal and high-tech ceramic in the watchmaking industry. “Since I use a bottom-up design approach that starts with materials, my objects can fully show off their material character,” says Zieta. “The True Face has been made to be noticed and to exude respect for precious materials. These values create a positive connotation on the wrist.” Rado CEO Matthias Breschan remarks, “I first got to know Oskar’s work when we featured his incredible blown-up metal mirrors and stools in our lightness-inspired pop-up gallery last year. I’m really pleased that we could work together to bring his vision into the Rado collection. The True Face is not only beautiful, but also a great design achievement.” The Rado True Face is part of an exclusive series of limited edition timepieces launched by the brand this year, with renowned designers each applying their individual vision to the popular Rado True.

Historiques Triple calendrier 1942 and 1948

acheron Constantin presents two new Historiques models featuring a complete calendar. A deliberately vintage look for these new models reinterpreting the creativity and the aesthetic of the iconic timepieces born in the 1940s. With their calendar function, round case with triple gadroons, two-tone dial, “claw-type” lugs and mechanical manualwinding movement, the new Historiques Triple calendrier 1942 and the Triple calendrier 1948 are reviving a typical Vacheron Constantin complication and style from this era. One style, two icons Vacheron Constantin is reinterpreting two calendar watches from 1942 and 1948, which highlight its expertise in the field of “useful” complications and the associated characteristic design. This results in design codes reflecting those of the original models, but with a contemporary twist. A steel triple calendar timepiece and another 18K 4N pink gold triple calendar with moon phase version are now back in the spotlight. The

40 mm-diameter case crafted in the Vacheron Constantin style features a number of character traits typical of the era, such as the distinctive “triple gadroon” caseband bearing “claw-type” lugs. The new Historiques Triple calendrier 1942 and Triple calendrier 1948 are both certified by the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva. Their “triple-gadroon” caseband lends a refined touch to the case which is water-resistant to 30 metres. Topped by a boxtype glass of which the slightly thicker nature enables the use of an extremely slender bezel, it reveals through the caseback the Fine Watchmaking finishing of the new complete calendar calibre – interpreted as reference 4400 QC and 4400 QCL for the moon-phase version (L for Lune, meaning moon in French). Beating at a frequency of 4 Hz.

Historiques Triple calendrier 1942

Historiques Triple calendrier 1948

The first model, made of steel, is inspired by reference 4240, of which the first executions in yellow gold, pink gold or steel were introduced in 1942. In keeping with the original, this understated and elegant model drives the hours, minutes, small seconds at 6 o’clock, along with hand-type date and day and month by aperture. The calendar indications appear in a choice of burgundy or dark blue, on a two-tone silvered dial typical of the era. The sunburst satin-finished centre and the outer zone punctuated by Arabic numerals clearly enhance the legibility of the respective functions and accentuate its retrochic elegance.

Like its vintage predecessor, the Historiques Triple calendrier 1948 is crafted in 18K 4N pink gold, a tone that is closer to the original version and endows it with an extremely elegant style. Issued in two limited series of 200 pieces each, it revives the reference 4240L presented in 1948: a triple calendar enriched with a sophisticated astronomical complication – the highprecision lunar cycle (hence the L in its name) – along with small seconds at 6 o’clock. Its contemporary version highlights an array of refined and distinctive assets. The dial features a silvered opaline centre with a sunburst satin-finished external zone.

Historiques American 1921 small model The watch of dandies and chic female urbanites. The Historiques American 1921 epitomises the boldness of an era and the technical sophistication of a Vacheron Constantin creation. Reinterpreted in a 36.5 mm diameter, this iconic 1920s model acquires an even more stylish allure. A cushion-shaped case in 18K 5N pink gold, a distinctive diagonal read-off, an off-centred crown between 1 and 2 o’clock: the Historiques American 1921 small model continues flaunting its vintage credentials while remaining true to its original aesthetic codes. Classical yet quirky. For almost 20 years, the Historiques collection has been giving a new lease on life to the icons of Vacheron Constantin’s technical and aesthetic heritage. This range composed of legendary watches revisited with a contemporary twist is produced in modest quantities, implicitly extending a discreet invitation to collectors of rare pieces and vintage watch connoisseurs. Among these creative archetypes is a much sought-after original creation designed in the Roaring Twenties for the American market and accordingly named the American 1921. This avantgarde cushion-shaped watch stands out with its diagonal display and its off-centred crown. A fabled model now offered for the first time in a smaller 36.5 mm size. Boldness and convenience Reading the time while keeping one’s hands on the steering wheel, or during a speech without having to twist the wrist. Such was the extremely practical historical vocation of this watch with its diagonal read-off, created by Vacheron Constantin in the 1920s for an American client with a passion for cars. This highly distinctive display was achieved by a 45-degree counterclockwise rotation of the movement, thereby naturally displacing the crown to between 1 and 2 o’clock, and the small seconds display to between 4 and 5 o’clock. The creative boldness of this composition is offset by the understated elegance of the finely grained silver-toned dial with its black painted Arabic numerals and minute track, slender open-tipped hands in black oxidised 18K gold, and a batonshaped hand on the seconds counter. Elegance and eccentricity on the wrist. Creativity and high standards Loyal to the original, the Historiques American 1921 small model watch comes in a cushion-shaped case in 18K 5N pink gold. Fitted with a lightly domed sapphire crystal, this Hallmark of Geneva certified model houses the Vacheron Constantin 4400 AS manual-winding caliber, driving hours, minutes and small seconds indications while ensuring a comfortable 65-hour power reserve. The transparent caseback reveals the hand-crafted finishing of the movement, a true signature of Fine Watchmaking. Setting the perfect final touch, the hand-stitched dark brown alligator leather strap with large square scales is fitted with a pin buckle shaped like a half Maltese cross, the historical emblem of the Maison. This watch will be also delivered with a second red alligator shiny leather strap to match a feminine style.

Original spirit Soon after its founding in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron, the Manufacture developed its first calendars. Throughout the 19th century, it demonstrated its mastery of complications by creating technical pocket watches associating complete or perpetual calendars with high complications such as the minute repeater. While the first Vacheron Constantin calendar wristwatches date back to 1920, the 1940s were the golden age of this complication in the history of the Maison. The calendar models from this period greatly contributed to the worldwide expansion and reputation of the Manufacture. Iconic watches were created, such as the references 4240 in 1942 and 4240L in 1948 that have inspired the two new models in the Historiques collection. Historiques collection, a return to roots Rare and much sought-after by collectors, the most legendary Vacheron Constantin creations have been successively reborn in the Historiques collection for more than 20 years. This highly exclusive range revisits the creative archetypes punctuating the history of the Manufacture since 1755. An approach that results in contemporary models with vintage overtones breathing new life into the technical and aesthetic heritage of Vacheron Constantin.

Jean-Sebastien Berland Regional Brand Director for Roger Dubuis

I

n town to present Roger Dubuis’ unique Pirelli pop-up concept, we found a great opportunity to sit with Jean-Sebastien and to dig a bit deeper in to the brand, its collaborations and to learn a little of what’s coming next. An exclusive selection of timepieces were showcased; the iconic Excalibur range including the three colours of the Excalibur Spider Pirelli Automatic Skeleton. Featuring rubber inlays from certified Pirelli winning motorsport tyres having competed in real races, these timepieces represent the new wave of daring elegance and fearless racers. Showcasing the Maison’s talent for shattering codes and blasting conventions, this on-trend concept pop-up boutique offered an augmented reality simulator experience placed inside a Pirelli racing car directly on the stand. The design of the booth itself also suggests an innovative interpretation of the Manufacture through a wealth of visual elements. The black and white chequered flag pattern, for example, contributes to the powerful racing ambiance.

WATCHES

What was the highlight of your year 2017? The launch of the partnerships definitely. Whether it’s with Lamborghini or Pirelli. These are both two strong and innovative partnerships. One that hasn’t been done before - this is the first time a watch brand has tied up with a tyre manufacturer. With Lamborghini, we’re doing it in a way that no one else has done before.

It’s been quite a year. Where to next? Obviously, our next big news will come in January 2018, at SIHH. Here we’ll be sharing our world premieres. There will be new materials, new movements, a different shape for the Excalibur. We are fortunate to have our own R&D department within the manufacture, these guys are very smart people, always innovating and never standing still.

Differently, how? In so many ways. Instead of just putting the logos on an existing collection, we created a whole new timepiece with very strong engine-inspiration.

How are women reacting to Roger Dubuis? You know, the reaction to the 606 Velvet has been overwhelming. All around the world, particularly here in the Middle East.

How does the collaboration work? How do the design teams get together? Getting two partners to work in tandem is one thing, adding a third partner adds a whole new layer. It’s easy if you share the same values and the same passion. In Pirelli’s case, they thirst for performance. They’re always innovating – new materials, new rubber, new shapes – creating winning combinations for the track. The brand is different from their competition. I love the slogans that you’ve using – Dare to race. Dare to be rare. What is daring about this watch? It’s not only about the watch – it’s about the brand itself. As you know, Roger Dubuis is a unique, exclusive brand. So, as a customer, you’re already daring to express your personality. You don’t conform to society, you’re different just by wearing a Roger Dubuis. You know, wearing the design of tyres of a Grand Prix winner on your wrist together with this cutting-edge skeletonised movement, is already an innovative spirit. Only people with a strong personality will be able to wear such a strong statement on their wrist. You launched a Kuwait Edition Excalibur. How did that go? It went so well, and we’re very fortunate to partner with the Behbehani Group, and through them we have a very sharp understanding of the Kuwait market. Because of the DNA of the products and the DNA of the brand, it’s easier to innovate and bring the right products.

And what’s next for ladies? New models, or smaller versions of men’s models? For next year we’ll still have the ladies’ Excalibur and Velvet – as I mentioned with new materials, new stones. And a new movement too.

Jean Sebastien Berland, “We are extremely pleased to bring our unique Pirelli pop-up concept to Kuwait, where we have some of our leading brand enthusiasts. Vividly reflecting Roger Dubuis’ “dare to be rare” mindset, this new space is a spectacular demonstration of the Manufacture’s commitment to disruptive materials and progressive complications”

Smartwatches. What’s your opinion? They’re a convenience - if you’re in to sports, or if you prefer to read your messages on your wrist. But that’s all. They have a completely different purpose to a Roger Dubuis timepiece. It’s a bit like going in to your garage where there’s a normal everyday car, and next to that is sitting another exclusive model – you take your pick for the moment, but they are different. Are they having an impact on the watch business? Surprisingly, I think they are helping shine a light on the watch industry as a whole. We’re more visible now to the younger generation. I see my kids and their friends asking for smartwatches. Whereas teenagers of five years ago wouldn’t have ever considered a watch because they felt they had everything they needed on their mobile phone. Now they’re turning to wristwatches again. As they advance in years and develop their tastes they’ll turn towards more traditional watches for sure. The smartwatch is doing us a favour.

Will you consider a further Kuwait Edition? I think so, yes. As I say, it’s a conversation between us and Behbehani and we’ll see what we can come up with.

The young age of the brand - it’s perhaps a double-edged sword. It presents opportunities? Yes. And freedom. We are free of any dogmas, and any expectations vis-a-vis our audience. It gives us freedom to innovate. Our audience is very recptive, and they’re very keen on us remaining different. We can be, and they want us to be, something different to the brands from where their grandfather bought his watches.

Are you attracting the collectors or a younger group? We never target anyone. We will never innovate or come up with a collection because we think it’s smart or that we’re targeting a specific audience. Our design team innovates with only the true spirit of Roger Dubuis in mind. We’re a young, innovative brand, with a strong design component. We’re daring.

Most importantly though, our young and flexible appoach is not only an image, our whole organisation is founded on this and the brand stands behind it. Everyone working within Roger Dubuis believes in this dream too. We have no boundaries in whatever we do - we’re all about encouraging and creating innovation opportunities.

Aston Martin DB11 Volante

The return of the ultimate convertible Sports GT

T

he most elegant of convertible Aston Martins begins a new chapter with the introduction of the eagerly-awaited DB11 Volante. Joining the DB11 Coupe, which was launched to wide acclaim last year, the new DB11 Volante sets new standards of performance, innovation, engineering and style to create the definitive open-top Sports GT.

Powered by a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo 510PS V8 engine, the DB11 Volante is built around the all-new bonded aluminium structure first seen in the DB11 Coupe. Lighter and more rigid than the model it replaces, the DB11 Volante has been engineered to deliver a much broader envelope of abilities. Greater levels of performance and handling accentuate the more sporting side of its character, while increased refinement, comfort and interior space ensure it remains a consummate grand tourer. This depth and breadth of ability is made possible by the Volante’s 3-stage powertrain and chassis modes. Working in perfect harmony with the 8-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission, electric power steering and limited-slip differential with dynamic torque vectoring, the driver is able to configure the car’s responses and tailor its behaviour in a way that best suits the road, weather conditions or their mood. Creature comforts such as a heated steering wheel encourage all-season open-air motoring, and rear seat ISOFIX attachment

In the Life Cycle Durability (LCD) test, engineers subjected the roof to more than 100,000 cycles in special weather chambers designed to simulate conditions in the world’s harshest environments, compressing 10-years of use into a one month test. The results of the LCD test were then validated with real world testing of DB11 Volante development prototypes in locations including Death Valley and the Arctic Circle. Engineered to be the most advanced and complete opentop Aston Martin ever built, styled to put its rivals in the shade and honed to achieve a fine balance of ride, handling, responsiveness and refinement, the DB11 Volante is dedicated to delivering a new dimension of driving pleasure. Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Andy Palmer, said of the DB11 Volante: “For many of our customers, indeed many generations of Aston Martin customer, the Volante has always offered something very special: a unique combination of elegant style, innate sporting ability and sensory engagement that lifts it above other open-top cars. The new DB11 Volante captures those qualities perfectly and promises the kind of pleasure and enjoyment that can only come from driving an open-top Aston Martin”. Max Szwaj, Aston Martin Chief Technical Officer, adds: “The challenge of creating a convertible car is retaining structural and dynamic integrity. To protect the former you need strength and rigidity, but to preserve the latter you need to keep weight to a minimum. With the DB11 Volante we have maximised the advantages of the DB11’s all-new bonded structure to underpin our new Volante with a structure that’s 26kg lighter and 5 per cent stiffer than its predecessor. The result is a truly magnificent car. One that combines greater performance and agility with increased comfort, refinement and interior space for occupants and their luggage”.

This year’s Monaco Yacht Show fleet was larger and younger average length 49m, 50% of the yachts less than two years old

Monaco Yacht Show

The 27th edition of MYS - still the world’s greatest yacht show

F

rom 27 to 30 September last in Monaco, the world’s greatest superyacht event brought together an exceptional concentration of superyachts and presented an exhibition of outstanding quality on the quayside. The 27th edition of the Monaco Yacht Show thus fulfilled all its promises and reflected a more buoyant market, supported notably by the strong attendance of American and Russian clients on the quays of Port Hercules to visit the 125 superyachts. This year’s fleet was larger and younger (average length 49m, 50% of the yachts less than two years old) and according to Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the Show, it appealed to visitors right from the start: “The exhibitors were busy from Wednesday morning with business meetings on their stands and a full list of bookings for yacht visits. We felt that the whole industry was concerned by an event they’ve been preparing for months, with high trade expectations. By midday this

impression was shared by all the different participants, brokers or shipyards who already confirmed negotiations with visitors interested in chartering or purchasing a yacht.” A new superyacht clientele invited by the MYS Organisers Attendance at this year’s edition is higher than last year with 36,400 participants (+8%) including an international business clientele but also private visitors invited by the MYS organisers via the Sapphire Experience programme. 160 ultra-qualified individuals thus enjoyed a bespoke stay in Monaco with visits of the superyachts displayed in Port Hercules. Around 400 appointments* on board were scheduled with the yachts’

representatives; one “Sapphire Experience” guest has already placed an order for a yacht (*calculated according to the aggregate total of visits scheduled for each guest). On the eve of the MYS, the 2nd edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit welcomed some fifty potential new superyacht clients – or their representatives – to discuss the key information to be borne in mind when chartering or purchasing a luxury yacht for the first time. The presence of these future owners or charterers in Port Hercules was the tangible result of the marketing and public relations actions managed by Gaëlle Tallarida and her team

to promote encounters between the 580 exhibitors and new clients: “the Monaco Yacht Show has become a brand with a strong identity, clearly defined since the first edition in 1991. The MYS is unique in being the only “hybrid” show in the world exclusively dedicated to the universe of superyachting. We are proud to host both the B2B community and today’s and tomorrow’s superyacht purchasers. They make a perfect fit. A new yacht order generates important business activity for all sectors in the yachting industry. Owners are more and more involved in the building of their yachts. At the MYS, future buyers also meet the nautical suppliers to discover the latest interior designs, cutting-edge equipments or brand-new gadgets. And they love it!”

An enthusiasm that was also obvious on Quai Antoine Ier with Tenders & Toys, the new exhibition dedicated to the trendiest luxury tenders and water toys on the market. An area unanimously praised by its exhibitors, who signed great sales and who have already requested bigger exhibition spaces for 2018. This success confirmed the boom of leisure activities linked with yachting, appreciated by a younger generation of clients for whom they represent one of the main reasons for chartering a yacht. For its second year of operation the Car Deck was again a great success, with the exhibition of 16 exclusive thoroughbred cars like the new Continental GT by Bentley unveiled for the first time in Europe at the Monaco Yacht Show. The classic cars by Mercedes-Benz, integrally rebuilt by Hemmels, or the iconic Cobra models by the US manufacturer Shelby – represented by Gentleman Car – generated business leads that will surely turn into sales in the coming weeks. Hoffmann & Novag,ue with the limited series of their HN R200 sports car, also enjoyed a successful first participation in the Car Deck. Aston Martin, Lamborghini, McLaren and Mercedes-Benz completed the car exhibition offered to the Show’s superyacht clientele. Launched in 2016, the Car Deck exhibition is a response to this natural convergence between yachting and the luxury car manufacturers, whether for joint projects or for the buyers of rare prestige cars who would like to discover the world of yachting. An exhibition extended to the whole of Port Hercules Extension of the 2017 MYS to the entire port made for greater fluidity of movement between the historic exhibition areas (Darse Sud, Parvis Piscine and the other quays) and the new tent on Quai Albert Ier or the Quai Antoine Ier, reorganised to provide a superyacht lifestyle environment. Exhibitors and visitors could discover the Starboard, the new exhibition lounge with its outdoor restaurant overlooking the port and a direct access to the Car Deck and to Tenders & Toys. Over 150 private events Press conferences, product presentations, cocktails on board yachts or on stands, private evening receptions – the enormous range of events organised by the exhibitors during the four days (and nights!) reflected the importance of public and press relations actions aimed at the high-end international audience and influential media at the Show. 400 privileged guests were invited to the Gala Party during which awards were made to three superyachts: Home (49,8m, 2017, Heesen Yachts), winner of the 2017 MYS/RINA Award, given to the most environmental-friendly yacht at the MYS; the Italian superyacht Seven Sins (52m, 2017, Sanlorenzo), winner of the 2017 MYS Interior Design Award; and the megayacht Jubilee (110m, 2017, Oceanco) which received two awards: the 2017 MYS Exterior Design Award and the 2017 MYS Finest New Superyacht Award.

Suzuki DF350

I

A force to match the power of nature and the sea

A revolution in innovation

t’s no secret that there is a growing demand for more powerful outboard motors. These new outboards have, in turn, fueled a move to newer, larger boat designs that previously may have been powered by stern drive or inboard power. So, as more powerful outboards are introduced, the boats get bigger and as the boats get bigger, outboards are getting more muscular. Suzuki embarked on a major engineering expedition to build the Ultimate 4-Stroke outboard. Making more horsepower is no mystery. Increasing displacement, or the use of a turbocharger or supercharger, makes more horsepower. However, larger displacement engines typically burn more fuel, adding weight creates a wide range of problems for boats, and more complex mechanical components create reliability concerns. On top of all this, boat speed is ultimately limited by hull design, the hydrodynamics of the lower unit and propellers, and how the outboards are mounted. In developing their new DF350A, Suzuki started with a blank sheet of paper, and considered all these factors in our design

Representing Suzuki’s identity and heritage A symbol of their passion and commitment to the ultimate in marine innovation and engineering. First, they looked at the traditional single propeller design. A single propeller creates forward thrust, to be sure, but also produces a significant amount of rotational energy as a byproduct. Was there a way Suzuki could convert this wasted energy into productive power and improve propeller efficiency? Secondly, the leading edge of the gear case disrupts the flow of water over the propeller. More power and torque require stronger, larger gears to transfer power from the driveshaft to the propeller shaft. This typically results in a larger gear case – and consequently, more disruption of the flow of water to the propeller. Could they design a lower unit that could house stronger gears and yet minimize the disruption of the flow of water to the propellers? Suzuki engineers labored mightily through years of computer simulations, trial and error, and on-water testing, to significantly improve the way an outboard converts engine power into underwater thrust. They have succeeded in this quest – and the result is a revolution in innovation. Suzuki call it Parting Seas. It’s in Kuwait at Mustafa Karam and Sons Showroom, the Suzuki Marine Distributor in Kuwait.

Well-dressed; well-groomed

ressing well is only part of the story. Clothes alone do not maketh the man. To complete yourself, groom yourself. Where? Most likely locally we’ve all got our favourites - few people book a flight to get a shave - but when you’re next in London’s Mayfair, you really should make time to meet Stefan Avanzato. Who’s he? Oh, you haven’t heard? He’s the master barber who presides over the Barber in the Dolce & Gabbana Sartoria store in Mayfair. As we said, you really should make time to meet. What’s he going to do for me? He advises the modern gentleman on essential grooming. What’s wrong with the way I’m already taking care of myself? Perhaps nothing. But we’re always ready to learn, and ready to take a bit of well delivered advice. Stefan has forgotten more about grooming than most men ever knew. Okay. I want to start from the basics. What’s his daily grooming advice? Use a gentle soap to wash your face daily and a stronger scrub once a week to exfoliate your skin. Always moisturise your face down to your neck. It has become normal these days to sport stubble, which is easily kept tidy using your razor on your cheeks and your neck so that it never goes too high or too low. Shampoo and condition your hair often but do not overdo as this dries your hair and scalp. Depending on your hair length you should be washing 3-4 times a week.

STYLE

Get your grooming right. The Barber Shop resides within the Dolce&Gabbana Sartoria boutique in New Bond Street in Mayfair.

Sounds like there’s a whole mountain of time involved there. And commitments. I’m not good with commitments. So, when time is short, which steps should I never skip? Moisturising is a step that should never be skipped. It takes a second and it is best done after the shower. I travel - a lot. It plays havoc with my skin. His solution? Staying hydrated is probably most important. Drink plenty of water during the flight and give your face a quick wash in the toilet followed by some moisturiser. Pack some eye serum if you really want to reduce eye bags. What are the steps to achieve the perfect at home shave? The easiest and best moment to shave is right after a shower when your hair is still soft and pores are still open. It is also an easy way to avoid irritation on your skin. Make sure your razor is sharp and for more sensitive skin try to avoid shaving against the grain – it might give you a closer shave but it causes irritation and razor burn to your skin. Rinse your face with water, gently dry it with a clean towel and apply an after-shave balm or tonic. How about those men who like to keep a beard, what is the best way to look after it? Treat it like you do your hair. Shampoo, condition and shape with your hands or comb to keep it tidy. Make sure you have a good pair of scissors to trim around the edges and remove unruly hairs. It is also worth using beard specific oils or moisturisers to keep it lustrous and take care of the skin beneath. He does sound good. Tell me more about the most exclusive treatment I can ask for at the Dolce&Gabbana Barber We offer a haircut and wet shave experience for that extra indulgence. This treatment provides everything; the classic shave includes incorporating a rejuvenating facial providing that extra touch of relaxation for the modern day gentleman. What will I find at the Dolce&Gabbana Barber which I cannot find anywhere else? We offer an elegant and relaxed atmosphere. Our barber shop brings together a traditional British flair with the flavour of traditional Italian barbering.

New season, new store

e love a fresh reason to get out and shop - and the opening of a new Boss store in Kuwait gives us just the right amount of reason we need to get out and explore. This season as it happens, sees a fresh richness of style in the collection. Long-time fans of Boss, we don’t need an excuse to don a suit whatever the occasion. Although some may baulk at pulling on a jacket with matching trousers, we contend this is look that never goes out of style.

STYLE

This year, Boss suiting is broader of shoulder, single vented, with mid-width lapels, and played against double-pleated pants cuffed, low-rise, and with plenty of break.

Instead of mid-aughts exec, the suiting is broader of shoulder, single vented, with mid-width lapels, and played against double-pleated pants cuffed, low-rise, and with plenty of break. Now under Ingo Wilts, a long-term servant of the house who recently returned for his third tour of duty, Wilts has accurately observed the appropriate silhouette for 2017. Yet this suiting is anything but conventional. For not only does it utilize fabrics of a provocatively anachronistic heaviness, boiled cashmere included, it mixes them with rough (but luxuriously so) wearable declarations of utilitarianism. Windbreakers, half-zipped, with an unorthodox arrangement of three billow pockets at the chest, are layered under fauxGuernsey knits. There are some seriously analog hobnailed

shoes, with external tongues Wilts had riffed on from a vintage buy. Duffles, either exceptionally low or exceptionally high, are presented with metal fastenings and leather beltlets instead of togs. Hoodies are bluntly silhouetted yet sophisticatedly rendered in reverse shearling with goat hoods. Hugo Boss is a big, hundreds of millions’ big, company. So it is all the more interesting to see how assertively Boss flirts with heaviness and roughness. Each look is fitted to its model and garlanded with a label bearing the label’s signature. This is a collection that tries to say the Boss man does not roll off the production line identically outfitted. He has texture and depth, plus a sense of the then that makes his sense of the now make sense.

Aya The Art of Living exclusively revealed ‘Y Collection’ during Saudi Design Week

A

yah Al Bitar, founder of AYA The Art of Living, unveiled her latest collection, the Y Collection, at this year’s Saudi Design Week. From the 4th - 8th of October, AYA The Art of Living presented a range of products from the ‘Y Collection’ as well as a number of signature designs from the brand. Here’s our special round-up of her newly launched, and highly desirable, pieces. AYA The Art of Living creates limited edition contemporary products and furniture that emerge from the essence of creativity

As an emerging designer with a rapidly expanding business,

The collection currently comprises six products, all of which

salmon and emerald are the four colours for this season with

Ayah Al Bitar went through a rebranding journey to discover the the design house was to create a collection based on the

central ‘Y’. The ‘Y’ itself is the center of the logo and the brand; aesthetically the letter’s shape is organic and versatile

giving the ability for Ayah to design numerous products. The collection started with the Y-Table – a contemporary take on

a traditional C-Table. The letter had so much potential; Ayah went on to produce five other designs.

include or derive from the shape ‘Y’. Bordeaux, mustard, the aesthetics replicating art deco styles and themes. Ayah’s continues her development of material exploration with a

number of unique details on varying designs. Not only is this

line inclusive of further colour, art deco gestures and simple aesthetics, the line is also made at a much more accessible

price point whilst retaining the high quality of all AYA The Art of Living designs.

DESIGN

The newest collection is inspired by the letter ‘Y’ from the brand name and originated from a notion of wanting to celebrate the brand logo and font

The Y Collection Y-Table: The Y Table was the first design in the collection, inspired by the traditional C-Table concept. Ayah’s take on the renowned C-Table design has more space and functionality, as well as utilizing sleek modern styling Half Y-Table: After having created the Y-Table, Ayah saw the gap in the market for tables suitable for floor seating, especially for the local Arab market. Perfectly aligned to be utilized with her Wisada, this table is a Y Table that is essentially ‘cut in half’ to sit closer to the ground with the same spacing solution. Pebble Tray: The pebble tray is designed inspired by the tabletops of each Y table, this shape is the negative space of two wisadas, Ayah’s classic design. The trays are sleek, lightweight and modern in design Y-Coat Hanger: This distinctive design was created with the idea that no matter what culture, background or country many people need to hang garments or items around the home. The concept was to create a hanger that is incredibly slim but with strong stability at the base, through in-depth material experimentation the weighted base is created out of lightweight concrete. The slim neck of the hanger also includes a small tray for additional items such as keys, phones, wallets etc. Trash Bins: Filling another gap in the market, Ayah created a range of trash bins to ensure consumers in the region have a choice of beautifully designed trash bins. Again in four colours, this design is small, compact and combines various materials. Small TV Unit: This small mobile piece of furniture is one of the standout pieces from the range. Merging all colours in one design, the TV unit has a smart mobility solution; the legs of the design utilize a special internal structure to give support with a slim aesthetic.

It features designs fostering form and function as well as conceptual pieces relative to the Arab world. It emphasizes problem solving in an in-directional manner and provokes thought. Read more at passionsarabia.com

The final collection is an elegant, simple and functional range of key pieces to have around the home. With the price point lower than normal AYA The Art of Living designs, this collection is ideal for gifting that fit within modern or classic interiors.

It’s a Western science meets ancient Eastern wisdom expereince. It’s exactly the kind of thing we’d steer clear of the sort of fad that we’ll freely pass on. Except this isn’t a fad - it’s already changed too many lives for that. We’re declared to be in fine health, but stressed. A tailored and busy schedule - up to four treatments a day - variously included accupuncture (following which we barely stayed awake during

dinner, slept at 10 o’clock and woke at 8 declaring - truthfully - we’d never slept better), deep tissue massages, a visit to the gym - where our lack of flexibility was highlighted, and worked upon - and seaweed scrubs plus high-pressure hosing. Meditation, yoga and mindfulness sessions are de rigeur if you’re going to do this properly.

Whilst your body and mind is being taken care of fabulously well, our enduring highlights of SHA are the mealtimes. Recover Fast

Treat injured, stiff and painful muscles

I

f you have been hurt badly from an accident while doing some sports activities, chances are you’ll feel the agony longer before you can even start to do some training again. Swelling of the muscles, build up of lactic acid, myofascial pain, soft tissue problem, overuse muscle and other minor inflammatory injuries are setbacks pro-athletes and even ordinary people encounter some time in their life. During this period, you feel thousands of emotions testing your resiliency as a person. You may find yourself questioning whether you should move forward or simply give it up. The wellness and aesthetic specialist and LPG ME spokesperson, Dr.Sami Jaber, said “It is natural for a person to feel depress after such injury. However, they should not dwell much on worrying about as to how to recover for there are ways which can help them get back on your feet quickly the natural way.” He added that aside from an injury or overuse of muscles, this condition is also caused by tension, stress, anxiety, and strenuous physical activities. Hence, fretting over the problem won’t do any good but rather it will just worsen. RICE (Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation) treatment is good for treating an injured muscle. It is easy to do, simply stop the activity that causes the problem for at least 48 hours to prevent from getting it worse. Place the ice packs or cold gel in the affected area for about 10 to 20 minutes and repeat for 4 times or more in a day to reduce the pain and swelling. Then wrapped it with elastic or tensor bandage. Make sure not to wrap it too tightly as it will affect the blood circulation. Lastly, elevate the area where

it is injured at or above the level of your heart to reduce blood flow. This also helps with the swelling. Another treatment you can do to recover quickly, relax, prevent injuries in the future and at the same time enhance your performance is with the use of LPG Cellu M6 Alliance. Dr.Sami Jaber explained “the manual massage strokes of the new technology, Alliance, mechanically stimulates the tissue and fasciae therefore correcting muscular and soft tissue problems as it relaxes the body, removes toxins and lactic acids and improves the blood circulation”. The LPG Endermologie therapy is non-surgical and its effectiveness is supported by 145 clinical studies. It works in the principle of the endermologie – a mechanical mobilization of the skin tissue. The system of suction, rolls and flaps does the deep massaging action. It acts upon the cutaneous and subcutaneous structures such as connective tissues, fatty tissues, as well as vascular and lymphatic circulation. Overall, improving cellular function. With the right treatment and care, you’ll be back in shape just before you know it.
