ISSUE NUMBER 91 - DECEMBER 2017 / JANUARY 2018
JUST A THOUGHT Dear Passionate Readers, The funniest joke I heard this year was “could someone please wrap me the rest of 2017 as take-away, I can’t take anymore!” Oh well! It surely hasn’t all been a smooth ride, but for that I am actually thankful and grateful. It is times like these that shake us, that make us go into deep introspection, ask ourselves what truly matters, and what we really want from our lives. It is times like these that push us into re-affirming our commitments and re-ignite our passion all over again! So 2017, thank you! You have been a very good year to me! When I felt the world spinning out of control around me, I decided to take control of mine. In a symbolic act, I stopped smoking. Before that day, I couldn’t remember me without a cigarette; there was no way I could ever believe that the day would come when I say “I am a non-smoker!” So thank you 2017, truly, for making me understand that it is time to look at things differently, to change perceptions and to approach the present and the future differently! With cleaner lungs and better blood circulation, I surely look forward to 2018!! May it be a good one for all! See you next year! Zeina Mokaddam Managing Director

Enhancing Kuwait’s entrepreneurial ecosystem
t’s pretty much the grand-daddy of them all. Although not the first of the country’s initiatives to address innovation in entrepreneurial skills, it’s the one that goes directly to the heart of the next generation by basing itself within Kuwait University and focusing on its brightest and most dynamic students. Led by the now well-known Dr. Redha Behbehani, on limited resources together they’ve achieved some remarkable results. Here, Redha discusses recent successes. “Drag & Drop Playground” pitched their startup business at the Seedstars event at Al-Shaheed Park in Kuwait City on Wednesday, November 1st 2017.
academic assistance to university students and professors. The audience at the event was rich with investors, accelerators and incubators, academia, and received great participation from the local startup community.
Seedstars World has been holding events in many different cities around the world in preparation for this year’s summit in Geneva. The event in Kuwait saw the participation of 8 startups from Kuwait which were competing for the chance to pitch at the Regional Event in Bahrain in December 2017, and at Geneva in April 2018.
The Swiss ambassador gave an empowering speech about the impact of startup culture and the growing community here in Kuwait. He also talked about his view for the future of Kuwaiti youth and their place in the world regarding innovation and entrepreneurship.
Seedstars is a global organization with activities in key emerging markets. Seedstars connects stakeholders within these ecosystems, builds companies from scratch with their public and private partners and invests in the top entrepreneurs. Through their different activities of startup scouting, company building and acceleration programs they now have access to entrepreneurs, investors, incubators, corporates and government officials. The eight startups that pitched on November 1st were: “General Senses”, “Pantrybee”, “Zahhab”, “Nabta Health”, “Mwjood”, “Drag & Drop Playground”, “Festivity”, and “TABB Inc.” The first place award went to “General Senses” a company in the revenue stage of their business that caters to immersing human senses into VR and other advanced trending technology. The second place went to “Pantrybee”, a startup that focused on the problem people face during their busy lives that prevents them from cooking a quick meal rather than ordering takeout. “Pantrybee” delivers the ingredients and tools needed along with instructions to their customers and ensure that their meal would be ready faster than a delivery meal would take to arrive at their homes. “Zahhab” received third place, they are currently at the prerevenue stage and their company provides all necessary
The event had 4 judges, each having a different background which all came together to find the best entrepreneur and most investment worthy startup for Seedstars global competition in Geneva. Dr. Redha Behbehani, director of the Global Center and Startup Kuwait was among the judges. The second judge was Mr. Mohammad Al-Tawash, the Chairman of CH9 of Bahrain, is a business accelerator with access to funding, venture capital and Angel investors. The third judge was Mr. Abdulaziz Hayat, the VC Associate at Faith Capital Holding, which provides operational and financial support to investments in order to help nurture the growing community of good entrepreneurs in the GCC. The fourth judge was Mr. Anurag Agarwal, Investment Manager at Arzan Venture Capital, which provides pre-seed funding to new founders of startups. Drag & Drop Playground had just returned from the StartupIstanbul Challenge which ended on October 23rd 2017 where they presented and pitched their business ideas.. This team now has received good publicity internationally and locally than ever before and will surely pitch their ideas at other events both globally and regionally. We wish Drag & Drop best of success in their endeavors. The winner of the Seedstars summit in Geneva will be entitled to US$1 million. The benefit of competing with Seedstars is that a team can compete again next year, with the same idea. Hopefully Drag & Drop Playground and other Startup Kuwait team would do so next year!

of their growing or nascent businesses.
Sirdab Lab Membership makes learning and growing much more affordable, by offering discounts and connecting you with other entrepreneurs to learn from and collaborate with.
of the sort of scale Sirdab Lab members can call upon in support
Members? Yes, that’s the model. How does it work? Sirdab Lab membership is an annual membership for those who know that building a successful business (or career) is a
marathon, not a sprint (because Kuwait’s previously favoured
way of growing a business by participating in exhibitions every now and then has been shown to not be enough).
It’s for individuals looking to become part of a vibrant
entrepreneurial community, and are dedicated to improving their
skills or building businesses. It’s for individuals who want to lead
The benefits of Sirdab Lab Membership are: - Exclusive members-only networking and knowledge-sharing events - Exclusive group and 1-on-1 mentorship sessions - Special offers from service providers (local and international) - Discounts on all Sirdab Lab workshops, courses, and paid events - Access to online resources recommended by other members of the community
THE STARTUP EDITION
Sirdab Lab Membership makes learning and growing much more affordable, by offering discounts and connecting you with other entrepreneurs to learn from and collaborate with.
- Booking the Sirdab Lab space to host two events, free of charge (subject to availability and approval) - Weekly email follow up to ensure you’re making continuous progress That’s the minimum you can expect, and the team at Sirbad Lab always strive to help their members in the best way they can. Their aim is to tranform Wannapreneurs in to Entrepreneurs. They know it’s not an easy transformation, and one where the level of support - and the individual’s acceptance of the advice that is given - that makes success more viable. They’ve a great five-point plan: 1. Make Sure You’re Willing To Make The Investment - If you’re not willing to make the investment, then it’s better for you to have an honest moment with yourself and let go of the dream you’re not willing to pursue. 2. Don’t Limit Yourself To What You’re Comfortable With Thinking and planning are always easier than doing. Researching is always easier than building. 3. Cut Yourself Some Slack - The less experience you have, the more slack you need to give yourself. Don’t be too harsh on yourself because you couldn’t explain what your startup is doing
“The main difference between Wannapreneurs and Entrepreneurs is that Entrepreneurs have something to show for their efforts”
or you picked the wrong platform to build your product. 4. Have Something To Show Early On - The main difference between Wannapreneurs and Entrepreneurs is that Entrepreneurs have something to show for their efforts, even if that “something” isn’t perfect. In fact, your potential customers will offer you better insights on these imperfections than you can come up with working in a dark corner of your office on your own. They will reveal to you what their priorities are and what imperfections they couldn’t care less about (and you shouldn’t stress over).
Sirdab Lab exists to help aspiring entrepreneurs realize their dreams and build the best digital products and tech startups they can
5. Surround Yourself With Supportive People - You want to regularly mingle with people who can provide you with information and guidance, inspiration, connections, and emotional support. And that could mean, membership of Sirdab Lab is the place to go. Sirdab Labs roll-call of success includes a number of now highly successful - on a regional and international scale in some cases - companies. Co-founder Haider Al-Mosawi says, “You can learn a lot from watching YouTube videos, and there are plenty of video courses that teach the technical skills of building apps and running startups. But can you do everything on your own? Knowledge is one thing, but collaborative effort, getting feedback from others, finding potential partners, and having doors open for you require personal connections and human interactions”. In just a few short years, Sirdab Lab has evolved in tandem with Kuwait’s startup scene. It’s essentially a support collective, and one with passion for innovation and growth at its heart. Haider again; “Not everything we do works the way we want it to, and that’s okay”. It’s a big step for an enthusiatic potential entrepreneur who’s been incubating an idea for some months or even years to knock on someone’s door and to ask for help. Rather than a display of weekness however, it’s an expression of strength. And if that door you’re knocking on is Sirdab Lab’s, well, you’re giving yourself the very best of headstarts right at the time you need it.

Making home-cooking all the rage gain Cofounders Yousef Al Munayes, Hind Al-Awadi, and Fawaz Al Sultan have succeeded in stepping back food delivery a notch - from prepared food they’re shipping the raw ingredients to cook a memorable meal to their customers’ homes. It’s a business they started from scratch, and not without a little effort! A common comment we’re hearing from startups is in their referencing of the amount of time and dedication is takes to establish a solid business. What was your experience? Hind: I had expereince from freelancing in the food-consultancy business, so I had a sense of what I was getting myself in to - I knew this would be the end of weekends. For someone like me, someone with my type of personality there’s no such thing as turning it off. Yousef: Although I know it would be hard work and long days, I was still shocked at quite hard hard it was. Not only long hours for us, it was hard on our family members and friends too. It was draining. What appealed to you about starting a business? Was the fact that you’d be working for yourselves the big appeal? Yousef: Not for me, no, because I know that at the end of the day no one is working for himself - you’ll have investors to report to, you’ll have employees, you’ll hve partners. It’s not so simple. In our case, we saw this as an opportunity and wanted to pursue it. Hind: You have to do it because you’re passionate about it. It’s not about wanting a certain lifestyle for yourself, it’s about you loving your product and really wanting it to work. It’s about wanting to bring it to people and seeing them enjoying it. As you were going around knocking on doors, looking for investors, did you find a ready understanding for what you were trying to do? Did people want to try to understand it? Yousef: For our seed funding we went to the Kuwait Fund for SMEs. The wanted to see a business plan, and a presentation on the concept itself, as well as on the team. And it was long process. Hind: And anyone trying to do this needs to remember that working with bureaucracy here takes a lot of time. It’s not something you’re going to turn around in a month. We were in their first cohort though - I think they’re in the process of smoothing out some of their bumps. Yousef: And over the past two years, the understanding of what a startup is has improved greeatly. There’s a much bigger community here - and more support all around.
“You have to do it because you’re passionate about it. Not because you want a certain lifestyle.”

Solo Taco
Genuinely Mexican
Claudia Ledesme’s earlier life was centred on fashion. Later, her passion for food, and that of her her country Mexico, came to the fore. A partnership with the owner of Solo Pizza delivered the opportunity for the establishment of Solo Taco. But that was only the beginning.
“ I can tell you that there was a Claudia before I met Savour, and there’s a different Claudia after”
What do you remember most about the process of starting Solo Taco? It was a lot of work. It still is, and always will be. But it’s my passion. I think when you follow your passion, you know you’re doing the right thing. I had underestimated the amount of time it would take though, and hadn’t fully understood how transferring a passion for Mexican food - which I’d only ever cooked at home or for friends - and then making it commercial, would require a whole new approach. You’re involved with Savour. Why did you appraoch them? What were you looking for? I felt the time was right for the business to grow. I was looking for investors - but I was looking for investors who would be able to understand and engage with my business. Someone who would have the same passion for food and for quality. I saw what Savour was doing - we applied, and I was one of the five that were selected out of more than 100 applicants. And the people within Savour who selected me are people who were already coming to the restaurant. They could see how sincere and genuine we are about what we do. And what advice have they given you? So many insights in to growing a business. I can tell you that there was a Claudia before I met Savour, and there’s a different Claudia after. The difference is that huge. There’s a curriculum that we follow - it is designed to awaken and to polish the entrepreneur inside ourselves. It’s challenging - throughout the accelerator we’re constantly pitching. Is it a guarantee of success? It’s not. They give us all the right tools, but it’s down to the individuals commitment and passion. It depends on the individuals determination - it helps reveal whether the entrepreneur is even on the right personal path. My involvement with Savour made to look within myself and question everything I do and to create a broader vision of who I am and who I want to be. On top of this, Savour are raising the standards of not only startup businesses, but other businesses in the food sector across the region. Their resource of mentors are aligned and passionate about this themselves.

Boxit Storage Living in a box
When Prem Pulliserry started his innovative - and now award-winning - storage business, the plan was to base it in Kuwait. However, an ambition for faster growth (and seeing an opportunity to escape tedious paperwork and standing in lines) led him to success in Dubai. What inspired you to go to Sirdab Lab in the early stages of establishing your business? I had an idea for the business, and knew I’d need help. I searched online to see if anyone was involved in supporting startups in this way in Kuwait, and saw that just one month earlier Sirdab Lab had launched. I reached out, met the team, and we learned together at the time. Did they put you in touch with specialists in your area of business? Not so much. At the time I was looking for generic startup information. They introduced me to the ‘lean startup’ methodology - this was the single most important contribution from Sirdab Lab to my business. It laid the foundation of how I should set up my startup. When you were looking for additional support, was there a network existing? There were others, but Sirdab Lab were the first to formalise this. You’re now in Dubai. Why the shift from Kuwait? There are a few reasons - firstly it’s a larger market for us here. That’s very important. Secondly, it is the only place in the GCC were it’s possible to have a legal status that first ideally for a startup with foreign ownership. If I had a choice, I would not have left Kuwait though. What does Kuwait need to do to retain people like you within the country? Primarily setting up legal frameworks for startups for venture captialists, for investors, for banks; and changing the visa laws. Almost everything I need to do for my company here in terms of licences and visas is avaialble online - it’s easy. It’s all possible in Kuwait though. How about funding? Funding is never an issue in Kuwait. For me, I would say that most of my shareholders are from Kuwait. It is much easier to raise money there - there’s less competition in Kuwait and investors are more readily open to new ideas. What is the best piece of advice you could give to someone thinking of setting up a business now? It’s simple - get the best mentors possible, and don’t chase the money, do the right thing first and it will come.
“Funding is never an issue in Kuwait. there’s less competition in Kuwait and investors are more readily open to new ideas.”

Tabb
Wait-free seamless dining in restaurants Solely a concept created by long-time Kuwait resident and Korean chef Rhee Yong Joon - known to his friends as John - Tabb aims to enhance every diner’s experience using the latest technology. In the final stages of beta-testing, it’s about to go live. What are John’s reflections on his journey so far?
“I didn’t even know what a ‘startup’ was. I spent more than a year-and-a-half learning about how to start a business before I even started to develop the product”
You were already running a successful business here. How did you approach this new startup? I didn’t regard this as a startup to begin with. At first, I was just fascinated by the concept I was creating. I didn’t consider its potential as a business until some time later. When the seed was fully planted, who did you turn to for support? It was a very long journey, but one I started to take it seriously, I knew the first thing I had to do was to find programming and technical support. I didn’t even know what a ‘startup’ was. I spent more than a year-and-a-half learning about how to start a business before I even started to develop the product. What advice would you give to people in a position similar to your own? I spent a lot of time and a lot of money making mistakes. In fact, this wasn’t an exclusively bad thing. The learning process I benefitted from at this time was valuable. Although being involved with an incubator program - Savour - now is adding huge value to my business, sometimes unless you go through the experience of following your own learning path, you won’t have the commercial maturity to appreciate it - otherwise it’s just theory. Now is the right time to join a program? Absolutely. And with Savour I’ve had access to the very best mentors in my area of business and across the startup scene too. What stage are you at now? We’re planning to go live in January 2018. We’re still working through hardware and software on a closed-beta system right now. If you came to the market now, would you approach things differently? A lot has changed in the last couple of years. There’s more of a startup network. When I began I didn’t even know who to trust you know as an entrepreneur you’re always worried someone is going to just steal your idea. You’re very cautious choosing who to talk to, but in fact there’s a lot of genuine support - and there’s money here to be invested in good ideas that show potential. I’d make it a combination of personal expereince and great mentors.

The program uses a unique concept of delivering information by top local and international speakers and will be held in Kuwait while maintaining the element of surprise everyday. Al Rasheid concluded that joining the program will increase the applicants’ opportunities to be accepted in The Proteges Generation Eight and will provide them with the basic knowledge about The Proteges summer program. It is worth mentioning that ESHTA program is the latest program created by The Proteges Organization, and its first season will be in January 2018. Furthermore, the Organization has already launched world-wide successful programs such as Small To Big, NABDH Program to strengthen the education about Kuwait’s oil history, and The Proteges summer program.

L’École Van Cleef & Arpels

L
’ÉCOLE Van Cleef & Arpels, the Paris-based School of Jewelry Arts, launched their first Middle East campus in Dubai during November. Following on from great success in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and New York, the nomadic campus came to Dubai for three weeks at Hai d3. First President of L’Ecole, The School of Jewelry Arts, created 5 years ago with the support of the Maison Van Cleef & Arpels, Marie Vallanet-Delhom’s professional experience has been dedicated to teaching, the passing on of knowledge and expertise and High Jewelry. After receiving a Master’s degree in Literature, Marie Vallanet-Delhom began her career as a teacher.
In addition to the adult classes and children’s workshops, the school has developed a rich program of events and activities that are free and open to the public. Ranging from evening conversations, to landmark exhibitions and complementary outdoor cinema screenings, the program is designed to offer an immersive experience for anyone interested in design, history, jewelry and contemporary culture. Zeina Mokaddam grasped the opportunity to fully immerse herself, and to learn more from Marie Vallanet-Delhom, president of L’ÉCOLE Van Cleef & Arpels. Firstly, and pertinently as we sit here in the heat of Dubai, far from the streets of Paris, why the travelling school? “Well, at first”, Marie says, “we decided to establish the school in Paris because this is where jewelry is rooted, but I quickly realized that there was a contradiction between wanting to reach out to the largest audience possible and being localized in Paris because not everyone visits Paris. Therefore, we had to move
DESIGN
and go to our future students. Thus, the idea of a moving school was created”. The aim of the the lessons is only to learn the basics, or is it a gateway for those who want to partake more fully in the jewelry industry? “Both. It is essentially an initiation for the public. We do not pretend that taking the courses makes one ready to work in the industry. But it should be noted that the courses are very specific, allowing professionals as well to add to their knowledge. For instance, a jeweler who does not know much about the history of gemstones can take courses and learn more about Art Nouveau jewelry or the history of jewelry. So, both amateurs and professionals take our courses”. Over the past 5 years, you’ve been to New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong. And now, you’re in Dubai. How was your first experience, how did the diverse cultures respond to the idea, and how is it today and why? “5 years is at once a lot of time and very little time for this school, which is one of a kind in the world. Tokyo was our first destination. We established our first school abroad in Tokyo where we gave courses. Later, we expanded and today, an outstanding version of a moving school is here in Dubai, because not only do we give courses and hold conferences, we also have a campus with 6 simultaneous expositions. It is our most ambitious project so far and I am very happy with it”. The profits of this program go to a charitable organization for the education of children. Is it the first time L’Ecole gives charitable donations or is it common to the L’Ecole program? “It is not exactly the first time. We’ve had a similar program in Hong Kong, because China is also very engaged in the education of children. It is Hong Kong and the Middle East that have the most been engaged in this matter”. How often do you plan to revisit a country? How do you rotate and select the cities you want to work with? “We are trying to have an 18-month cycle, which would be perfect. If we could for example come back here in 18 months, it would be great. We were able to do this in Hong Kong, we have visited Hong Kong 3 times now. We were not able to do it in the USA but I think we will manage to hold a second session there next year. It is true that we are facing a big demand at the same time and in various places. And for those who don’t want to wait for a year and a half, they can always come to L’Ecole in Paris, so they can visit the L’Ecole website and register. It is available 11 months a year”.

ith this race, that was green flagged by Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Volkswagen AG, one of the most successful chapters of Porsche’s motor-sport history comes to an end. From 2015 to date, the Porsche LMP Team took three consecutive Le Mans outright victories plus three successive manufacturers’ world championship titles while Porsche 919 Hybrid drivers won the drivers’ world championship title on three occasions. Since the 919’s debut in 2014, the tally from 34 races is 17 wins with seven of them being one-two victories. Furthermore 20 pole positions and 13 fastest race laps were achieved. How did you feel when the two Porsche 919 Hybrids crossed the finish line for the final time? “As a team, we have stuck together through thick and thin over the years. This last runout in competitive conditions was indeed depressing; yet at the same time, I felt a deep gratitude. Gratitude for the fact that I have been able to be part of this chapter of Porsche motorsport history, for the successes and, above all, for the fact that we got through four years without any accidents that resulted in injuries.” Do you still remember your expectations when you first started in this role? “When I started, I was not fully aware of quite how significant this project was for Porsche, in terms of the identity of the workforce and the expectations inside and outside of Porsche. For me, before starting in this role, the Porsche LMP was another very interesting motorsport project that I wanted to make successful. I had not really an idea what it meant to represent Porsche at Le Mans and compete for the overall victory. I was a sprint racing junkie. This changed quickly. I saw the unique opportunity to be able to build up a racing team from scratch and had the goal of winning races. First and foremost, at Le Mans.” How did you deal with the pressure? “For me, optimum preparation takes away a certain degree of pressure, and helps me to manage the rest. As a team, we did everything possible
to ensure that we were prepared as well as we could be for our races. We went through all of the scenarios that can occur on a race weekend again and again. We marked out our Road to Le Mans, and planned precisely what we wanted to test, when and where we wanted to test it, and how we would make use of our personnel. But even the best possible preparation does not remove that pressure that builds up before Le Mans, and reaches its peak on the Saturday afternoon before the start. In my position, it was important to give off a sense of calm, despite the internal pressure. I had to show the team that we had done everything we could, we were well prepared, and now we were going to do what we came here to do.”
Andreas Seidl takes a look back at the Porsche LMP1 programme. Read the full interview online at passionsarabia.com
What were the three most important decisions at the start of the programme? “The streamlined and independent structure was very important. Secondly, it was crucial to have our own factory team in Weissach and not just to position development there. The third decision that I believe was vital was the philosophy that was also held by the Executive Board of adopting a very aggressive and uncompromising approach in terms of the vehicle concept, in order to exploit the maximum potential allowed by the rules.” What was your personal highlight in the years gone by? “It was definitely the 24 hours in 2015 for me as well. In terms of the preparation and the two weeks at Le Mans, this was the

biggest operation that I had ever been involved in, and this time I was leading it. The deployment of these three cars and the coordination of the entire team in the race was beyond anything I had done before. To have three cars complete the race without technical problems, achieve a one-two victory and become the benchmark in terms of pit stops by one’s own efforts – it was close to perfection and just how I pictured a race should be. It was also the unique moment when we as a team achieved this long-desired overall victory for Porsche. We had fought hard for that and managed to meet the expectations.” In your opinion, what was the most critical phase of the programme? “For me, the most critical time was definitely the test phase before our first race. We had lots of technical problems and the pressure was really on. We were a team that had recently been thrown together, and had to start by getting our personal relationships on the same page. The team structure had to evolve alongside the development of a highly complex vehicle. We had zero reference material about how and what we were doing would position us in relation to the competition. There was a certain amount of unrest within Porsche because we had no results to report. Some information was leaked and there were stories about how bad the outlook was for us. Overcoming this ‘they’ll never do it’ attitude as a team was difficult. We also lost people along the way, who no longer believed in our mission. But getting through it all together made us even closer later on. This was where the foundations were laid, and thankfully those in key roles stayed with us.” “ At which points your nerves were on the edge? “I try to tackle each subject analytically and in co-operation with the team in order to find solutions. However, the fact that my nerves were never on edge during this project was also due to the fact that luckily our programme was a continuous success story.” How many times did you cry tears of joy? “I tend to save my emotions until I get home. But I just couldn’t hold it in those times that we crossed the finish line to win in Le Mans. There is this two-week event, with all the pressure that builds up beforehand and finally the race itself, which is so exhausting both physically and mentally – and then when you see the chequered flag and win for the factory with a Porsche, it is an unparalleled feeling. In that moment, it feels as though a great weight has suddenly been lifted. To see the joy and relief on the faces of the team is indescribable. I know that I will never be able to top this experience, no matter what. I am grateful every day for the experience.” Read the full interview with Andreas at passionsarabia.com

Kuwait’s favourite racer gets the season off to a (near) perfect start
retty much top-marks at Bahrain’s Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge at Bahrain for Kuwait’s favourite racer Zaid Ashkanani as he came away with a win and a second place in the opening round of the new season. Delivering a flawless drive from pole to chequered flag, Kuwaiti driver Zaid Ashkanani took the opening win of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East Season 9 and the first victory ever in a new generation GT3 Cup car in the region. Under the lights at Bahrain International Circuit, Ashkanani returned to the championship he won back in 2014 to be troubled only by British driver Tom Oliphant. Clocking some quick laps, Oliphant attempted to reduce the gap Askhanani created, but the Kuwaiti showed his fellow Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup driver some impressive defence skills to race away and take the win. Speaking after his win, Zaid Ashkanani said: “It was the perfect return to the championship for me; qualifying in pole position and a strong start allowed me to create a good gap early on. There was a battle going on behind me for second place, so I used this to extend the lead further. Once out in front I knew that I had to concentrate on making no mistakes and getting the car across the line. Tom Oliphant managed to close the gap and put me under a bit of pressure towards the end, but I managed to keep my cool and finish with the win.” Ashkanani, who secured both pole positions over the weekend, had a tougher drive in Race 2. The Kuwaiti star had someone at his bumper for 11 laps of the 12-lap race, with either Al Faisal Al Zubair or Tom Oliphant putting pressure on him. Towards the end of the race, his speed started to decrease and Oliphant took advantage of Ashkanani entering a corner wide. “It was a good race”, Ashkanani said, “I enjoyed driving. My tyres weren’t on my side, my speed dropped by the end of the race and this is when Tom took the lead. It was a close one at the front, but Tom raced well to win at the end.” The Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East consists of six race weekends with 12 races over a period of six months. The championship will resume at the Dubai Autodrome on 8th and 9th December.

So, what do we already know? Porsche is expanding its mid-engine range with the new twoseater 718 Boxster GTS and 718 Cayman GTS. The power output has been increased to 365 hp (269 kW) thanks to a newly developed air intake-duct and an optimised turbocharger for the 2.5-litre, four-cylinder boxer engine. With these improvements, the engine delivers 15 hp (11 kW) more power than the 718 S model and up to 35 hp (26 kW) more power than its GTS predecessor models with the naturally aspirated engines. The new mid-engine sports cars are available with a manual sixspeed transmission or optional Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK). A range of features is standard, including the Sport Chrono Package, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical rear differential lock and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which lowers the ride height by ten millimetres. More power for more performance The GTS models have a maximum torque of 430 Nm, available from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm, providing an even better acceleration
response. When equipped with the PDK and Sport Chrono Package, they accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, achieving a top speed of 290 km/h. The most powerful Sport Turismo becomes plug-in hybrid Porsche is expanding its hybrid range with a new Panamera Sport Turismo model line. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo flagship model will combine a four-litre V8 biturbo engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 680 hp (500 kW). Even when just above idle speed, the sporty saloon offers 850 Nm of torque, accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 310 km/h. The most powerful Sport Turismo has a range of up to 49 kilometres using solely electric power and therefore producing zero local emissions. It is not just the balance between performance and efficiency that makes this hybrid saloon unique in its segment; its design concept, which features a large tailgate, low loading edge, increased luggage compartment volume and a 4+1 seating configuration, results in the new top performer offering a high standard of everyday usability.

Zenith Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar

A watch to embrace the legend
esterday’s trailblazers, today’s archetypes. The El Primero and Range Rover models are trademarks and cornerstones of their respective fields. Desirable. Luxurious. True pioneers. Their brilliant creators – the watch manufacturer Zenith and Land Rover, the world leader in the realm of luxury sports utility vehicles – united in a partnership to celebrate two legendary creations that have made an indelible imprint on watchmaking and automotive history with the exclusive El Primero Range Rover Special Edition, a distinctive timepiece that is equally at home on city streets as it is on rugged is terrain.
WATCHES
First unveiled at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show, Zenith and Land Rover are celebrating their creative relationship by presenting a new Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar Special Edition. The timepiece features a new elegant brushed grey dial with copper-toned details, and a new black rubber strap coated with black-toned perforated calfskin, inspired by ideas from both brands’ product design and engineering departments. A watch to embrace the heritage and strong credentials of two legends. In 1969, Zenith unveiled its fabled El Primero chronograph. That same year, British car manufacturer Land Rover introduced the prototype of the very first luxury off-road vehicle: the iconic Range Rover, which hit the markets in 1970. Fired by the same pioneering spirit and the same ability to explore new horizons, these two original creations achieved legendary status. In 2017, Zenith and Land Rover are continuing to celebrate the creative relationship. Featuring a ceramised aluminum case of 42 mm and beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, the new Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar Special Edition introduces an appealing brushed grey dial with copper-toned details. Whether on the wrist of an intrepid explorer or an elegant gentleman, it also exudes an inimitably chic aura, enhanced by a new black rubber strap coated with black-toned perforated calfskin. This leather is the same
high-quality hide used on Range Rovers and is secured by a triple folding clasp in DLC-treated titanium. Beating at the dynamic pace of a legendary movement, the El Primero Range Rover chronograph features a streamlined, subtly curved and inimitable design. Its high-frequency mechanism is clothed in the aluminium ‘bodywork’ – a nod to the Range Rover chassis – of its 42 mm-diameter matt black ceramised case. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Chief Design Officer, says of this collaboration: “The Range Rover Velar brings a new dimension of modernity, elegance and a touch of glamour to the range rover family. The Chronomaster El Primero Range Rover Velar Special Edition, created with these very same principles, comes with a bloodline like no other and is refined for every occasion. It will stir the emotions.” Powerful precision Throbbing at the heart of this special Range Rover edition is the automatic El Primero 400B movement. With its fast-paced beat of 36,000 vibrations per hour enabling it to power a tenth of a second display, and its integrated column-wheel construction, this El Primero ‘engine’ is a worthy heir to the world’s most accurate series-made chronograph developed by Zenith in 1969. This 326-part movement drives central hours and minutes hands, along with chronograph and tachymeter functions, while ensuring an over 50-hour power reserve.

Alexander Schmiedt
V
Brand Director (Middle East) for Vacheron Constantin
acheron Constantin is the world’s oldest haute horlogerie manufacture with almost 260 years of uninterrupted history, Alexander Schmiedt has been brand director for the Middle East since the beginning of 2016. Speaking on his appointment, Schmiedt said: “For somebody who is passionate about fine watchmaking, it is an honour and unique opportunity for me to work for Vacheron Constantin, the oldest watch manufacture in the world. I am greatly looking forward to further sharing this unique watchmaking heritage with the watch enthusiasts of the region.”
Established in 1755 in Geneva, Vacheron Constantin is the world’s eldest watch manufacture and has been making watches without any interruption for almost 260 years. Founders of the true spirit of technical and precious Haute Horlogerie, the men and women of Vacheron Constantin continue to design, develop and Manufacture exceptional timepieces that adhere to the Maison’s three fundamental values: expert technique, inspired and harmonious aesthetics, and an extremely high level of finishing.
Now, as he heads towards the end of his second year with Vacheron Constantin, it’s a good time to reflect on what he’s learned, what he’s changed, and to discover what’s next on his to-do list. Alexander loves watches, and with all the heritage and history that Vacheron has, he’s derived great pleasure from the experience of the past two years, and has uncovered a treasure of inspiration. “It’s a brand with big potential”, he says, and one where he’s been able to “take what we already have and bring it to the next level”. “We need to raise the brand’s awareness and tell the story, having history is extremely relevant as it allows you to do things that others cannot do - and that’s what we’ve started doing. We are on our way to achieve the absolute target”. There’s no doubt that he’s proved he’s on the right track, but it’s equally clear that there’s potential for strong growth ahead in the region. According to Alexander, the key to success that can never be changed is to become and stay relevant to your clients. Nowadays there are so many changes in communication with digital and complete transparency, immediate response, everything is going so fast in communication and there is so much information going around left and right. Modern means of production, 3D printing, robotics, all that are giving the people the feeling of information overload. A certain group of people, still appreciate the things that last. In the end, it’s talking about what will give you the true luxury in the future.
WATCHES
Relevance is something that is authentic, real, and exclusive. When you have something that is relevant to you, you get the feeling of authenticity. Alexander tells us “Here at Vacheron, we have always been exclusive, always living a passion, and aiming for something beyond functionality. People never bought a Vacheron Constantin watch to only tell the time, it was something that you have an emotional relation with, it’s all about craftsmanship and passion. This doesn’t mean it has to be old fashioned, on the contrary, something that has a long tradition, out of which you can develop something that is extremely modern.” With 260 years of history comes heavy responsibility, however the current impact it has on the brand is certainly empowering. When both are combined then innovation occurs. Alexander quotes an Arab Sheikh “I learned something from right here in the Middle East, it’s that only the ones who understand their past, understands his present and knows where he wants to go in the future.” We learn from the past, which allows us to reinvent and renovate to move forward. Tradition and innovation is like the two sides of the same coin. The tradition of today was the innovation of the past. If you want to stay traditional you have to constantly innovate and remake yourself, to create a traditional tomorrow.
We noticed Alexander was wearing a Vacheron classic! We couldn’t help but ask about it. “I’m currently wearing the Vacheron Overseas watch; this watch was developed for the travellers. I consider myself one of those, it can happen that one day I’m on a beach in Dubai or in the office so this watch is the perfect one for me to be wearing as it fits my lifestyle.” Time is a funny thing, some of us have so much of it, while others have so little to spare. When asked about his own relationship with time, Alexander answered almost instantaneously, “It is the ultimate luxury! When you are born, you are given a certain quantity of time and once a second is over you cannot take it back. There is no recipe on how to use it. My advice is to use it in a way that you don’t regret, and you make the most out of it.”
2017 has been a stellar year for Vacheron Constantin. The highlight must include $1 Million Celestia Astronomical watch, and the recent Historiques additions. Vacheron always comes back to heritage and traditions, it’s always a question of how to make it relevant but also how to stick to the heritage and tradition and Celestia is the perfect example, it was the most complicated astronomical watch ever created. It’s a lot of information and innovation in one piece. Many times making the complicated things simple is the most complicated task. For Alexander, that was the most major accomplishment for the Celestia. “This bulk of innovation in a piece that is very wearable, beautiful, and simple. The final client for the Celestia is actually from the Middle East.” As a constant traveller, Alexander Schmiedt has met many watch owners and collectors. When asked about what they expect from Vacheron in the future, Schmiedt tells us “They expect that we as Vacheron continue to stay true to our roots, don’t change who we are but continue to surprise them. Also for us to continue to reinvent ourselves in a way that we haven’t before, hopefully we have something to show next year, that would definitely surprise them.” We are definitely not huge fans of smart watches, but there is a place for them in the market. However, according to Alexander, you cannot compare them with Vacheron watches or any other watch. They are two different things, that follow different rhythms of lifestyles. The smartwatch might be the coolest thing to wear today, but in three months there’s a new one out. Also, it is only based on functionality. As for Vacheron you don’t buy it purely for functionality, it is like a piece of art, you will love it today, and in 50 years as well! After that, you might even pass it on to someone else in your family. It would still stay as relevant and elegant as it is today.

L.U.C XP Urushi Year of the Dog

he elegance, the refinement and the technical nature of the ultra-thin L.U.C XP Urushi watch have made it a cult model. Each year, Chopard draws inspiration from the repertoire of Chinese astrology to offer a fresh interpretation of its Urushi dial, an ancestral Japanese technique. Staging an encounter between beauty and precision, East and West, Chopard places creativity at the heart of cultural ties and of its commitment to perpetuating traditions. 2018 marks the celebration of the Year of the Dog. Its iconography, its universal symbolism and its mythological strength are showcased in an exceptional L.U.C watch issued in an 88-piece limited series: The L.U.C XP Urushi –Year of the dog. This masterpiece of fine craftsmanship began with an encounter between two perspectives. That of the Urushi master and of the master-watchmaker at Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier, both intently focused on their work. The deft hands decorating the dial of the L.U.C XP Urushi, just like those capable of developing and producing the L.U.C 96.17-L calibre, perpetuate time-honoured skills bearing authentic testimony to their respective cultures. Together, they celebrate the Year of the Dog, the 11th sign of the Chinese zodiac, for a year dedicated to generosity and loyalty.
The entire range of qualities associated with the dog is thus reflected in the L.U.C XP Urushi – Year of the Dog watch.
In the Chinese zodiac, each sign is the expression of a distinctive nature. Eager for justice, sensitive and faithful by nature, dogs devote all their strength to serving others, without ever impinging on others’ freedom. Their devotion withstands every trial and when they love, it is for life. They also cultivate an attitude to work based on commitment, personal involvement and a serious-minded attitude that implies making the most of individual skills, giving true meaning to their existence, and basically leading a useful, honest and consistent life. Dogs are builders and protectors demonstrating unfailing loyalty. Chopard has decided to embody this canine through a representative of the extremely beautiful Asian ‘Akita’ breed, depicted in a lush natural setting dotted with wild orchids and enhanced by the fluttering presence of a dragonfly, regarded as a lucky charm and a good omen.

Corneliani’s choice is a radical one based on a few fundamental principles. Chromatic Rhythm: a continuous game of tones and nuances, as original as they are sophisticated, which encapsulate a distinctly Italian sensibility stemming from our familiarity with the beautiful. From deep blue mixed with shades of brown through to burgundy combined with navy blue: the colour palette perfectly blends earthy tones with natural semi-tones going right up to teal. Black and grey with vibrant touches of violet are essential. Hybridization: this is the keyword for the autumn-winter 2017 collection, the most modern contamination of tailored garment and sportswear. Timeless Design: a stylish answer to the most contemporary requirements with full respect for the classic rules, as seen in the LIGHT LIVING project which is further developed in the autumn-winter season. In fact, the iconic jackets with chest piece now offer different customisation possibilities:

Supersonic Renaissance Aerion Corporation pushes the envelope
I
n September 2014, Aerion entered into collaboration with Airbus Group to engineer, build, and certify the AS2 supersonic business jet. Under this cooperative agreement, Aerion supplies software design tools to Airbus Group on an exclusive basis, while Airbus Group supplies engineering and program management support to Aerion. As a result of this deepening collaboration, Aerion has launched a search process to select a U.S. assembly site for the AS2. The site will be the new home of Aerion Corporation, which will be the OEM manufacturer of the AS2, owning the type certificate for the supersonic jet. Airbus will provide ongoing support to Aerion, including, potentially, the supply of major airframe structures. Aerion introduced its first supersonic aircraft design, the Aerion Supersonic Business Jet (SBJ), to the aviation community in 2004 and opened its order book for this twin-engine aircraft in 2007, almost instantly acquiring 50 orders backed by refundable deposits. The recession that began in 2008 slowed the company’s discussions with potential manufacturing partners for this jet. However, a robust R&D effort continued during that time, resulting in the 2014 announcement of the Aerion AS2, a larger, tri-jet aircraft employing Aerion supersonic natural laminar airflow (SNLF) technology. The AS2 evolved from the expressed wishes of potential customers for a larger, longerrange jet. The AS2 has a maximum speed of Mach 1.5, about 70 percent faster than today’s fastest subsonic jets. Supersonic range objective is 4,750 nautical miles, and long-range-cruise range at Mach 0.95 is projected to be 5,300 nautical miles. The elegantly appointed AS2 cabin has the cross-section
dimensions of today’s long-range jets with seating for eight to 12 passengers. The crucial work of developing and patenting SNLF technology began in the 1990s and was conducted by a predecessor company, ASSET Group (Affordable Supersonic Executive Transport), led by Dr. Richard R. Tracy, an expert in hypersonic and supersonic design. In 1999 and 2000, ASSET performed supersonic test flights in collaboration with NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center (Formerly NASA Dryden) confirming predicted levels of supersonic natural laminar flow—the enabling technology for a new generation of efficient supersonic aircraft. Recognizing the potential of the SNLF concept, an investor group led by Robert M. Bass formed Aerion in 2002 to acquire ASSET and its team with the aim of commercializing the company’s supersonic technology. Since that time, the company has amassed more than 40 patents and the world’s largest knowledge base on SNLF-based supersonic transport technology. It has conducted several follow-on flight tests in conjunction with NASA, confirming and refining SNLF concepts. Aerion projects first flight of the AS2 in 2021 with entry into customer service in 2023.
FLY
The Aerion AS2 is a three-engine jet and is larger than the originally conceived Aerion supersonic business jet. Fuselage length is 160 feet and maximum takeoff weight is 115,000 pounds. Minimum projected range is 4,750 nautical miles with the intention to achieve a range of more than 5,000 nautical miles.

A diverse 6-day programme of exhibitions, installations, talks, educational workshops and more allowed visitors the opportunity to discover and engage with design. The free-to-attend programme served as a rich introduction to the design scene in the UAE, and built on the many events and exhibitions happening throughout the week and beyond.
Killa Design | Dubai SuperSEEDed (left) In addition to welcoming visitors to explore Killa Design’s space, the Studio showcased a photography exhibition exploring Dubai’s architecture through the eyes of Killa Design architects, titled ‘Dubai SuperSEEDed’. Super-seed is first and foremost an analysis of Dubai’s urban fabric. As any other phenomenon subject to an evolutionary process, the city grows by leaving behind some parts which are not fully developed as their surrounding components, non-places which are unrefined fragments of the urban fabric, embryonic territories not yet grown into City. At the same time there are other spots which coexist in the same city. These areas are often overly saturated and exploited and their constant necessity of being utilized makes impossible to think an alternative development for them. Both cases, despite being completely different, are acting as barriers within the city, they are sort of virtual walls which preclude the city from having an organic and completely developed urban fabric. Because of these areas the city becomes a collection of many individualities as opposed as a unique living organism. Superseed’s analysis is concentrating on identifying these areas and, through a pragmatic yet utopian design approach, proposing new entities, new formations, inceptions for new ramifications of the existent. The aim of the exhibition was not to be exhaustive of providing all the opportunities in which a particular place can be developed into, but to initiate discussions about the possibility of superseding the existent with a better reality and plant seeds for a new alternative Dubai. In this new vision, the city will not only be a place where people move from a point A to a point B, but an entity to go through, where movement is not a necessity but a choice for new urban experiences.

Born in 1979, Fahad Al Naymah lives and works in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Growing up in the rural village of Darma, Al Naymah did not receive any formal training in art. As a selftaught artist, he began with simple sketches of his envirnoment
which greatly influenced his earlier pieces, drawing on camels, goats, palm tress, Bedouins and other facets of the desert habitat. Gradually, he moved onto drawing human faces and launched his professional art career in 1988. The exhibtion continues at Kuwait’s Dar al Funoon through until 7th December 2017.

Well-known Kuwaiti artist Amira Behbehani explained; “I developed the theme around boxed houses; those that I moved from and to since my childhood and each box had a different painting or drawing on them emphasizing the figures that affected my life such as my mother, aunt, father, uncle and grandfather. I showed 5 boxes and 5 artworks. 2 of the boxes had illustrations and graphic lines to show the child that every now and then shows up and starts drawing childish images of animals and landscapes. However, the artworks were basically showing the period of now, the latest digital or mixed media work, framed with scratched mirrors instead of glass, I wanted the viewer to become part of the image and live the now.

Indigo Expressions Yasmin Abdulla Al-Mutawa at Becarre Art
Yasmine Abdulla Al-Mutawa celebrated the opening of her solo exhibition at Kuwait’s Becarre art on 14th November 2017. She says of her work, “Nature inspires me. My work is informed by my experience of the natural world. The flora and fauna of Kuwait, the deserts of the American Southwest and the landscapes of Northern Europe have shaped my artistic expression. I pursued my interest in the natural world through education and degrees in Biology and Landscape Architecture. Extensive world travel and immersion in galleries, museums and printed media has influenced the evolution of my art. The spontaneity and luminescence of watercolour suits my
personality and is my primary medium. Vivid colours are recurring elements in my work but the work in this exhibition is largely monochromatic. The use of Indigo as the main pigment allowed me to explore and challenge the way I use paint. I respond to its values from dark to light and incorporate varying brushstrokes and shapes. These works begin as a sheet of wetted paper upon which I lay down large dark shapes in a random fashion. I enjoy the way the paint is dispersed by water and I react to these large foundational; shapes by adding smaller shapes. These shapes are interconnected and the finished piece may symbolize seed dispersal or an organism under a microscope.
