ISSUE NUMBER 95 - MAY 2018
JUST A THOUGHT
Dear Passionate Readers, “You’ve got a fast car. I’ve gotta plan to get us outta here!!” Remember that song from Tracy Chapman? Writing you this letter, I cannot but replay those words over and over again! Is it because the world is running too fast or is it that eternal drive within me that keeps on surging no matter how much I try to suppress it!? And I wonder... Why this persistent desire to be out of the here and now that has been haunting me since adolescence? Is it Escapism? Or is it a longing for the more? The first reflects weakness, and I, as a human being, do acknowledge I am feeble. The second reflects the innate instinct for evolution, and I, as a human being, do acknowledge I am nothing but an energy and potential. And in the whirlwind of my mind, all I need is a fast car... To those who desire the more, press on that pedal and enjoy the ride with us, Until next issue……

ON THE COVER: May 2018 The Automotive Edition - for over a century now the automobile has been the defining icon of the world. It reflects its era’s styles and tastes, and its use increasingly reflects the vision of a future society. Our 2028 issue of The Automobile Edition will, for sure, bear little in common with our 2018 edition. In the future, perhaps, we’ll all be driving electric or at least hybrid cars. Perhaps WE won’t be driving at all the future looks very autonomous indeed. But, one thing that has never changed throughout the decades is the passion cars engender. This issue of Men’s Passion presents a reflection of that passion.

E
It’s a power trip
very automobile is merely the sum of its parts. Look too closely and you’ll see nothing. Step back to enjoy the full beauty. Each car, each part, each angle looks different to each and every one of us. They provoke emotions like little else in life and (deep breath), they separate the sexes. Why do men and women have such different connections to the cars they drive? Perhaps this tongue-in-cheek analysis provides an explanation. Or perhaps it doesn’t. You decide. Which man ever wept when he sold his car for a better one? I know of none. His new car will be his new passion – this is the way of the automotive world since, largely, it’s just the way a man’s emotions work. The excitement of a new car imbues the man with renewed youth, and (because no man ever upgraded to a slower car) its increased performance refreshes his vitality. In all seriousness though who, male or female, didn’t feel younger behind the wheel of a new, faster and sexier automobile? Why men can’t just leave it at that, and feel instead obliged to add large spotlights, huge aerofoils and shiny wheel trims, is perhaps the topic for a different discussion – one on evolution. Women have a different relationship with cars. They’ll forget to monitor tyre pressure, overlook the importance of checking the oil from time to time, wonder how to refill the washer bottle and neglect the service schedule. But they don’t intentionally mistreat or disrespect their automobiles. For sure, you don’t hear women boasting about the time they blew an engine or wrote off a car. The woman who scrapes a wheel trim against a kerb, bumps the exit sign on the way out of the car park or drains the battery by leaving the headlights on overnight, can take comfort in feeling nothing other than mild embarrassment. The man who writes off a car or blows up its engine take pride in their stupidity and will find themselves admired for it.
A man and his car become partners in crime. Theirs is an intense relationship, a Bonnie and Clyde love affair involving a seemingly innocuous series of transgressions of motoring laws. No man forgets the first time he got busted by a speed camera, nor the first time he parked illegally and got away with it. To a man, these are rites of passage in the same vein as first love. Even sharing the space within his car becomes an issue. Men don’t share gladly. If it’s not a loud sigh from the accompanying female, it’s going to be a silent gripping of the door handle in preparation for his partner’s swift exit at the first opportunity. The inner voice begging her man to “please slow down, please don’t go through this red light, please don’t race every car away from the lights” manages to take the shine off any new car experience. Today’s essential satnavs are the man’s best friend – a soft and sultry female voice will whisper directions as he travels through new cities, inviting a right turn here, a slight left there, but they’ll never tell him to slow down. The man who can never remember to put his socks in the laundry basket will be the same man who allows no detritus to languish in his automobile. While unable to rinse out his coffee cup, he can nonetheless spend hours hosing down his car, lathering it up with soap, rinsing, polishing, and repeating. His car cannot shine too brightly. Even unseen corners of his car – high up under the wheel-arches and within hidden quadrants of the engine bay – glisten as brightly as his new pair of Guccis. The man who cannot tell you the colour of his wife’s eyes is the same man who can reel off the minutest details of the specification of his car – even before you’ve asked to hear them. He knows what cars his own is up against, and equally he knows he’s not the kind of man to have bought the wrong car. Bad drivers are other drivers. And this is automotive passion. A blinding love affair with motoring and cars. It’s not about transportation, and they’re not a matter of life or death. For many men, cars are much more important even than this. And it is to those men, and the more enlightened but no less passionate motorists of both genders, that we dedicate this edition of Men’s Passion.

Ferrari - Racing Pedigree
A
with Mohammad Dawleh, General Manager, Ferrari Kuwait
l-Zayani Trading Company, the official Ferrari importer to Kuwait for the last two decades, is in the midst of an outstanding year on the roads. We spoke to Mohammed Dawleh, General Manager for Ferrari, Kuwait, to get the inside scoop on what’s new and exciting at everyone’s favourite Italian luxury sports car company in 2018.
“A Ferrari is not a car, it’s a dream!” Mohammad Dawleh, General Manager - Ferrari, Kuwait
Ferrari - perhaps the most evocative name in motoring history. It’s the first car every young boy dreams of owning. Zahra Husain learns more about Ferrari in Kuwait today with General Manager Mohammad Dawleh.
The first half of the year has been all about the Ferrari 812 Superfast, the new model that made its debut at 2017’s Geneva Motor Show. With 800 cv and performance figures of 0 – 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, it is the fastest and most powerful road-going Ferrari ever. The 812 was Ferrari’s big news last year, so much so that all the units of the car have already been presold in Kuwait. Another new model to watch out for this year is the Ferrari Portofino, which will be replacing Ferrari’s much-loved California and California T models. Scheduled to arrive in Kuwait for July, the Portofino promises to surprise and delight its customers. This new V8 GT is all set to dominate its segment thanks to a perfect combination of outright performance and versatility, making it both a luxury drive and an everyday utility car, one that might just make its driver the owner of the “Most Impressive Car on the Road” award. Capable of unleashing a massive 600 cv and sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, the Portofino is the most powerful convertible to combine the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy
boot and generous cockpit space complete with two rear seats, suitable for short trips. However, Ferrari’s big surprise so far this year is the 488 Pista – the model takes its name from the Italian word for ‘track’. Powered by the most powerful V8 engine in the Maranello marque’s history, it is designed specifically to testify Ferrari’s unparalleled heritage in motor sports. This car is specifically allocated to only the most loyal of Ferrari’s customers. As much as Al-Zayani understands that it deals with a very special kind of customer that appreciates the luxury and cutting edge technology that owning a Ferrari can add to your driving experience, they also understand the need to attract new customers. Considering Ferrari is a highly aspirational machine it makes good business sense to be able to offer a slightly affordable price range to appeal to an alternate customer base in the market – this is where Ferrari Approved Vehicles fill the gap.

Ferrari’s Approved Vehicles are pre-owned cars, sold through Al-Zayani Trading Company. Each car in this category goes through a rigorous 190-point check, ensuring they have retained their original status both in terms of performance and appearance. This system of selling approved vehicles works in the favour of both new and old customers. “A few years ago, we started encouraging our customers to trade in their old cars for new ones. The trade-in gives them an opportunity to upgrade, helping us source used Ferraris that could be sold at a slightly more affordable range. Most of our new customers start with pre-owned cars and graduate to new ones,” said Mohammad Dawleh. All approved vehicles are sold with warranty and buying it directly from Al-Zayani means peace of mind is a part of the deal. Over the last few years, the approved car segment for AlZayani has become a very important part of their business. What initially started out as an initiative to bring in the used Ferrari cars and keep the customer within their network has turned into a community of Ferrari enthusiasts, where
many of the buyers are collectors looking for specific older models. For every 10 new cars sold by Al-Zayani they sell six preowned cars. A ratio they plan to bring to 1:1 within the next 2-3 years. A total Ferrari fanatic, it is clear from the way Mohammad talks about the cars that this is more than just a day job for him. Having worked in the automotive industry in Kuwait since 1985 and with Ferrari since 2009, Mohammad possesses a unique understanding of the Ferrari customer. However, ask him to pick his favourite and he’ll look at you as if you’ve have asked him to do the impossible. “If I were in a mood for adventure, I would zoom around in the 488 Pista, if I wanted to show clients around the city the Portofino would be my best bet, if I was looking for some real muscle but also needed down time, the 812 is ideal. It’s not possible to pick one, I want them all!” said Mohammad with the conviction of someone who truly believes that what he is selling is not just a car but a cherished dream.

Bentley - Best in Class Abdulrahman AlZabin, Sales Manager, Bentley Kuwait
I
t’s been a steady start to 2018 for Bentley Kuwait, but things are just about to pick up… and how!
The new Continental GT is an entirely new car from the ground up. With a dual clutch eight-speed gearbox, active all-wheel drive and latest technological updates, this sporty new GT is almost like going back to basics for Bentley. In keeping with Bentley’s race car heritage, the newer version sits lower, is more agile and drives like a sports car.
Arriving early June, the all new Bentley Continental GT and the Bentayga V8 are set to take Kuwait by storm.
However, the model that everyone has been waiting for is the Bentley Bentayga V8. Starting off at the slightly lower price point with a twin turbocharged, 4.0-litre petrol engine, this new addition to the Bentley line-up is sure to attract a whole new generation of buyers. Everything offered in the W12 is also available with the V8, including the clever electric active roll control suspension tech along with all the other customizable options that Bentley extends to its customers.
We sat down with Abdulrahman AlZabin, Bentley Sales Manager at Al-Zayani Trading Company, Kuwait, to learn more about what’s up and coming with the brand this year.
In addition to the Continental GT and Bentayga V8 models, Bentley’s all time best-seller the Flying Spur also sees an update with the Flying Spur W12 S. The first four-door Bentley to achieve a top speed in excess of 322 kph, with added power and torque, the car never compromises on the refined Bentley experience. The Flying Spur W12 S is the perfect balance between all the driving satisfaction of a GT and the range,

The other segment working extremely well for Al-Zayani is the certified Bentley pre-owned program. With an extensive checkpoint list and a minimum one-year warranty, the brand is attracting a much younger customer base. Also, trade-ins have seen a rise in the number of customers wanting to upgrade their cars.
with its audience. “Bentley is all about going the extra mile, a little bit further than others would, to deliver a product that is unique; a practice that we follow through even in terms of our customer experience. A friendly environment, sales people who understand a customer’s apprehensions and know how to address them are all integral part of the buyer’s journey. The Bentley experience has to start from the first customer touchpoint, which may not even be in the showroom but through a phone call,” said Abdulrahman AlZabin.
While unparalleled luxury and performance offered by Bentley are legendary, the reason customers in Kuwait keep coming back has a lot to do with their experience at Al-Zayani. The relationship between Al-Zayani and Bentley dates back to the early 60s, giving the national importer a deep understanding of the brand, what it stands for and how it wishes to engage
Abdulrahman understands what makes Bentley truly unique is the effort the marque puts into perfecting the details and creating class, making him the perfect man to head Bentley Sales in Kuwait. He also recognises the need to hire the right people to be able to take the brand to its customers in the most authentic way. After all, Bentley is all about offering a best-in-class experience.

First car? In 1995 I bought a white, 1962 VW Beetle. I’d seen it every day as I passed by, it never moved. If it was going to be mine it would need a lot of fixing up, but I decided it was exactly the car I wanted. I managed to find the owner and, although he was too ill and was never going to drive it again, he didn’t want to sell it either – he wanted to give it to his son. I found the son in Belgium, and he agreed to sell it to me. I bought it for $3,000 and then started on the job of changing and replacing everything over the next year before I could even drive it. At some point this passion became a living for you. What happened first? I started as a freelance writer with the Lebanese motoring magazine – AutoLiban. Then, after two or three years, in 2005, I bought the magazine from the owners. What is your schedule during a typical month? Every month is different. It depends on the manufacturers and their plans for new launches. One month might include trips to Dubai, Europe and the States. For sure, there’s a lot of travel and I go where the cars are. It sounds glamorous, and I guess it is. Being constantly on the move is part of my life. I sometimes think I’d like to travel a little less, spend a bit more time with my family, but every time I get an email from a manufacturer… I just can’t say no!
Motoring Writer
Which was your most memorable drive? One of my best experiences was around three years ago in Iceland with the Land Rover Discovery Sport. It was minus 21 degrees, and the only place to drive was on the snow and ice. It was a great time for me to discover a new country, a new culture as well as a new car. And what a great place to push that car – a perfect location.
ith over 15 years expereince as a motoring journalist under his belt, on top of a lifetime of passion for cars and motorbikes, Gilbert Rahme has driven all those cars you ever hoped to drive, and more. He’s Beirut-based, but rarely at home. You’re most likely to find him at an airport lounge, behind the wheel of the latest luxury, sporty and just every-day model, or at his workstation editing the words of a review or uploading videos for his highly-regarded YouTube channel.
Over the years you’ve been a motoring writer, technology has advanced hugely – and not only amongst the cars themselves, but also your reporting. The most notable change has come in the power and relative ease of video production – coupled with social media. We have to work much harder now. When it was only the magazine, we used to go, drive the car, they’d send us a few photos, sometimes they’d send us some B-roll footage if in case we wanted to create a video. Some weeks later we’d publish it in a magazine. Today, with technology and social media we have to constantly take photos to post, produce short videos for uploading during the drive, and I produce a series of ‘Drive With Me…’ videos for my YouTube channel. All of these need updating all of the time. Thankfully, the technology is easily available and easy to use – for me it’s mostly GoPro and the latest iPhone… plus some clever video-editing software.

Everyone wants your job though! I get many messages, every day, from people asking what I’ve done in my life to get to this position. They ask what my major was, where I studied – but this isn’t what it’s about. It’s about passion! I’d advise any young student who’s thinking they’d like to do my job, the best course to go for is to study mechanical engineering. That way they’ll learn about HOW cars work – then he can move to doing test drives, he’ll understand more about the science of why a car behaves the way it does in certain conditions, and about how the engineering makes the car everything that it is. What about where you’re reviewing a car, how truthful can you actually be? I know there are some in the region who don’t criticize the cars they drive, and it’s certainly easier to only focus on the positive points of any car. But, if there’s something I notice that doesn’t reflect the brand, then I’ll say it. If it’s my opinion, it’s worth sharing. No one benefits by reading a review that basically just says “this is a bad car”, but if it’s a balanced critique then everyone benefits – both manufacturer and reader or viewer. Reader’s know when someone isn’t being truthful. Which car has most surprised you? Well, I was coming off a series of very nice drives with a line of supercars, and next on my list was the Honda Accord. You can imagine the thought of it didn’t get my heart pumping, but once it got in to the car I found it was really good to drive. Honda know how to work technology to its best advantage. It’s a regular car for a family man, but comes with a fine drive and plenty of high-tech under the hood and in the cabin. A tough question now. Of the cars you’ve driven – pick two. Okay, of supercars I’ve driven, the Ferrari 458 Speciale is still my favourite. When this car was launched (2009) it was so far ahead of all others in performance levels. The technology was amazing. The gearbox was so fast – it almost changed as quickly as you could think about it. For a regular car, a sportscar, I’d go for the BMW M3 or M4 – for me these are still the best sportscars ever made. Even when they made the M5, M6 and M7, the M3 and M4 remained the best. The weight distribution was always perfect. I have a 2010 normally-aspirated V8. I think this is the best of the best. 420hp, but you can drive it every day. Best roads to drive on? I had a great time with Porsche on the roads from Stuttgart to the Black Forest. Amazing roads, amazing scenery – and in the home of Porsche. I’d keep going back there to drive any car, or motorbike, on those roads and enjoy it more every time.

Stars of Geneva
Our pick of the most significant (and sometimes just fun) global premieres
Jaguar I-Pace
Corbellati Missile
Jaguar took the wraps off the production I-Pace at the Geneva auto show. If it looks familiar that’s because the car is virtually identical to the concept car precursor of the same name that made its debut in late 2016. It’s quite an achievement, but one that was considered from the program outset.
A hypercar made by family-owned Italian carmaker Corbellati. The Missile is claimed to be the most powerful series production sports car. The low carbon fibre body, just 1.17 m high, sits on a carbon fibre chassis. A 9.0 V8 twin-turbo RWD engine delivers 1,800 hp and 2,350 Nm.
The I-Pace project started as a vision for what the future could look like for the brand. As Tesla products have blazed the path of desirability for electric cars - once seen as a choice for environmentalists – it’s now clear that the future of the automobile is electric. Not only are they more environmentally efficient, but their performance capabilities and packaging has proven to be superior to conventional front-engine cars. When a company is also ready to take on the establishment head-on and create a design that’s original, well balanced and practical based on the aforementioned criteria, it’s a recipe for success.
It’s not a brand you’re probably familiar with, but it is known to artists, art enthusiasts, and jewel collectors. History aside, the family brand has decided to branch out into the automotive world, and its first attempt is a big one with a car that’s billed with the high expectation of being the world’s fastest car, Buggati, Koenigsegg, and Hennessey be damned. Little about the car is known at this point, but it does sport a purely Italian design and promises 1,800 horsepower and a top speed that breaches the 310-mph range. The power credentials are certainly there, but whether or not it will live up to the hype remains to be seen.

Range Rover SV Coupé
Morgan Plus 8 50th
Land Rover will build just 999 of these luxurious full-sized SV Coupés. In its 70th year, the British carmaker is thereby paying tribute to the first Range Rover, originally built back in 1969 with just two doors and a tailgate.
The Morgan Plus 8 50th Anniversary Edition celebrates 50 years of a motoring icon and pays homage to Morgan’s most popular 4 wheeled model over the last half-century.
Born from Land Rover’s modernist design philosophy, Range Rover SV Coupé is a celebration of the Range Rover bloodline. Assembled and hand finished by Special Vehicle Operations, this is a limited edition vehicle that is unmatched in its class. Each part of it has been meticulously considered. Superb materials, captivating details, and bespoke colour combinations have all been used to create something that is eminently collectable. Range Rover SV Coupé’s official world debut presentation was on the 6th March at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. Welcome to rarity.
Production will be limited to just 50 examples, each one hand-built and carrying a unique model number. The Morgan Plus 8 50th Anniversary is a fitting combination of craftsmanship, luxury and technology. A lightweight aluminium chassis and 4.8-litre BMW engine sit beneath the traditional Morgan body. At just 1,100kg, the Plus 8 is one of the lightest V8 passenger cars in the world and is capable of 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. The Plus 8 50th Anniversary Edition will be the last Morgan vehicle to feature the naturally aspirated BMW V8 engine.

Lamborghini Huracan Performante Spyder
E’Mobile Microlino
Drop-top version of the high-performance Huracan model unveiled in Geneva in 2017. The 5.2 V10 engine thumps out 640 hp and comes with a new matching chassis. Lightweight throughout, thanks to a high proportion of forged composite and cut carbon fibres.
This is not a car! Inspired by bubble cars from the 50ies like the ISO Isetta and Heinkel Trojan, the Microlino combines the advantages of a motorbike with those of a car. It was designed to be the ideal vehicle for daily distances, like commuting to work or shopping.
It is the most track-focused drop-top supercar to leave the gates of Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata Bolognese factory yet.
The Microlino has two seats, a kerb weight of 450 kg, a range of 120 or 215 kilometers (bigger battery) and a maximum speed of 90 km/h, which is more than enough for an urban environment.
The new model adds a folding fabric soft top to the circuithoned chassis of the Performante, mixing its sharpened handling with the more visceral experience of open-top motoring. The car retains the unique bodykit of the Performante, with forged carbonfibre used for the front spoiler and rear wing, as well as the car’s prominent rear diffuser, but chopping off the roof has encouraged the fitment of two rear buttresses.
With just 2.4 meters length, the Microlino is ideal for crossparking, the front-entrance enables getting out directly on the sidewalk. The selling price is around 12’000 Euros, less than a car, but a bit more than a motorbike. The Microlino can be recharged at any conventional domestic power socket in four hours, with a Type 2 connector in just one hour. The Microlino guarantees smiles n’ more.

Future owners of the still-to-be unveiled McLaren Hyper-GT, codenamed BP23, have each received a sculpture of the car’s evocative and luxurious yet sporting interior. The BP23 ‘Speed Form’ also features a hint of the bodywork design that will make the next Ultimate Series McLaren the most aerodynamic car ever from the marque and help it to achieve the highest top speed of any McLaren, at more than 243mph. The BP23 ‘Speed Form’ provides an early hint of the luxury and imagination that extends under the skin of the vehicle to its icon-eclipsing interior, which is arranged in the same three-seat, central driving position layout as the McLaren F1 that inspired it. As befits a gift associated with such a rare car, examples of the BP23 Speed Form – which are individually numbered – will not be available to buy. This three-dimensional piece of art, which measures 400mm
x 205mm x 80mm and weighs a proud 3.6kg, is a product of ‘extreme craftsmanship’, created in the true spirit of leadingedge McLaren automotive design. Each piece is machined using the latest 5-axis CNC cutting technology but hand-assembled and finished, reliant on the interaction of human hands, eyes and skills for the achievement of excellence. Each McLaren BP23 ‘Speed Form’ took more than 100 hours to create, with 30 hours of expert hand-polishing alone. A craftsman has checked each sculpture to achieve an exceptional standard of build, and the highest quality possible. The entire BP23 allocation of 106 – the same volume as the number of McLaren F1’s sold – was spoken for within weeks of the petrol-electric hybrid car being announced. Unlike McLaren Sports Series and Super Series cars, which have an alphanumerical nomenclature, BP23 will carry an as-yet unannounced name that will be disclosed nearer to its reveal.

Porsche conquers the Nordschleife
O
New 911 GT3 RS sets a lap time of 6:56.4 minutes
n April 16 the Porsche 911 GT3 RS set another benchmark for road-approved sports cars at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit in Germany: Porsche works race driver Kévin Estre set a lap time in 6:56.4 minutes with the 520 hp GT3 RS. The Frenchman’s lap time was 24 seconds faster than the best time achieved with the previous GT3 RS model. Most powerful 911 with normally aspirated engine sets benchmark at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife
Porsche development driver Lars Kern was sharing driving duties with Estre. Following the 918 Spyder and the 911 GT2 RS, the new GT3 RS is the third production Porsche sports car with a notarised lap time of less than seven minutes on the world’s most demanding race track, known as the ‘Green Hell’. As is customary for record drives, the time was measured around the 20.6-kilometre lap. Frank Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars, commented; “No other Porsche model gets as close to racing as the new GT3 RS. Many innovative ideas from top-level motorsport were transferred; for example, from the 911 GT3 R. This is what our philosophy for GT models is about: Highest technology must be fascinating but tangible. In this regard there is no harder test for our ideas than the Nordschleife.” Andreas Preuninger, Director GT Model Line, added; “All four lap times of both drivers were below seven minutes and only tenths of a second apart. This proves not only the outstanding power of the GT3 RS, but also its extraordinary driveability at the limit. A perfectly composed overall system allows for highly dynamic performance even with a relatively modest engine power. For a driver, each of the car’s thousands of parts have to feel like one – that’s an unbeatable strength of the GT3 RS. And what especially delights me is how much fun Lars and Kévin had when driving that car.”
29-year old Estre began the record lap at 11:40 am in ideal conditions, with 14 degree Celsius ambient and 18 degree Celsius track temperature. “This lap was a sensational experience for me”, he revealed afterwards. “Through the fast corners and on the brakes in particular, the GT3 RS is unbelievably close to our racing car GT3 R. This is also thanks to the new generation of tyres for road going sports cars. I like the engine of the GT3 RS a lot. Up to 9,000 revs per minute from a six-cylinder engine just feels fantastic. The sound is a dream and the torque is massive.” Since 2016 Kévin Estre belongs to the squad of Porsche works drivers. He competes with the Porsche 911 RSR in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) that includes the Le Mans 24-Hours. In the ADAC GT Masters he races the 911 GT3 R. At the Nürburgring the 911 GT3 RS was equipped with the latest generation of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. Optimised especially for track day use, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R is fully compliant with relevant EU and US law. The tyre (265/35 ZR 20 front and
THE AUTOMOTIVE EDITION
325/30 ZR 21 rear) can soon be ordered at every Porsche Centre and selected dealers or tyre fitters. Its approved fitments include 911 GT3 RS and 911 GT2 RS. The 911 GT3 RS with motorsport-bred chassis and 383-kW (520-hp), four-litre, high- speed naturally aspirated engine had its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in early March this year. The high-performance sports car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 312 km/h.
Since its construction (1925 - 1927), the Nordschleife has enjoyed a reputation as a terrifying and merciless route through the Eifel forests. The Formula 1 pilot Sir Jackie Stewart – a three-time world champion in 1969, 1971 and 1973 – was so impressed by the circuit that he gave it the name which it will probably never lose: Green Hell (Grüne Hölle).

ust two weeks ahead of its global unveiling, Brabham Automotive has released headline figures for the Brabham BT62, along with a photograph which gives a glimpse of its first car. Follow Brabham Automotive to see the reveal of the BT62 in early May: @brabhamauto
The teaser image shows the rear of a low-slung, race-inspired car. The BT62’s thin LED accent tail lights are reflected in its extreme carbon fibre rear wing, which points to the car’s performance potential. With performance characteristics that point to the potency of the car, the new Brabham is pure-bred for the track and capable of setting blistering lap times, designed and engineered to demand more from the driver and reward the limited few who will rise to its challenge. The BT62 boasts a power-to-weight ratio of 730ps per tonne, a dry weight of just 972kg and is powered by a Brabham naturally-aspirated 5.4 litre capacity V8 engine. With its performance-optimised body and aggressive aerodynamic package, the Brabham BT62 delivers over 1200kg of downforce. Saving additional weight and with additive performance, the BT62’s brakes are carbon/carbon – a current Formula 1 technology that was first introduced
to the sport by Brabham in 1976 – featuring six pistons front and rear. Celebrating seventy years since Sir Jack Brabham launched his racing career in Australia in 1948, production of the Brabham BT62 will be limited to just seventy cars. With a price of £1m plus local taxes, and before options, orders are being taken now, and first deliveries are expected later this year. Owners of the BT62 will join a Brabham driver development programme which will enable them to fully exploit the performance of the vehicle on the track. Immediately following its reveal, the all-new Brabham BT62 will be on show at a prestigious central London location on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 May, amidst a breath-taking assembly of historic Brabham racing cars and memorabilia. Open to the general public, and with admission by ticket only, places are limited and demand is likely to be very high.

He’s a sportsman, and uses exercise and a health regime including running, walking and avoiding smoking. His is a sport that requires physical effort in the car. Omega’s Watch on a Mission

Speedmaster CK 2998 Limited Edition
ontinuing the evolution of one of its most popular watch designs, OMEGA is proudly unveiling its new Speedmaster CK 2998 Limited Edition. The original OMEGA CK 2998 was released in 1959 and, for collectors, it has since become one of the most sought-after vintage Speedmasters in the world. With its Alpha hands, symmetrical case and dark bezel, it has always had a strong following amongst the most admiring watch enthusiasts. The model also has a particularly notable reputation as the “first OMEGA in space”. In 1962, astronaut Walter “Wally” Schirra made history when he wore his own personal Speedmaster CK 2998 during the “Sigma 7” mission of the Mercury program.
WATCHES
The OMEGA Speedmaster is one of OMEGA’s most iconic timepieces. Having been a part of all six lunar missions, the legendary Speedmaster is an impressive representation of the brand’s adventurous pioneering spirit.
Today, OMEGA has used this classic model as inspiration for its newest timepiece. So many of the iconic features have been retained, yet the watch is on a mission to reach new fans, through several updates to its stunning design. All three subdials are black, as well as the minutes track and the polished ceramic bezel with its white enamel pulsometer scale. There is also a black leather strap with a white rubber interior that has been micro-perforated. The pulsometer scale, which is used to check a person’s heartbeats per minute, has particular relevance to the CK 2998. With the original models, customers were able to choose from four different versions of the timing bezel (including tachymeter, pulsometer, decimal or telemeter). Therefore, this new model remains in-line with that design heritage. The polished and brushed stainless steel case is complemented by a lightly sand-blasted silvery dial that also houses a number of exquisite features. Firstly, blackened “Alpha” hands are used for the hours and minutes, while sand-blasted rhodium-plated “Alpha” hands are used on the subdials. The chronograph seconds hand comes in varnished red. The hour and minute hands, as well as the blackened indexes, also include Super-LumiNova for increased visibility in dark conditions. 2,998 of these collectable watches have been produced and each unique Limited Edition number can be found on the caseback, along with the original Seahorse medallion and a “SPEEDMASTER” engraving. Finally, it’s important to note that the heritage of this model continues on the inside. Each Limited Edition is driven by the OMEGA Calibre 1861, a movement that is deeply rooted in the history of the “Moonwatch”. Now, its adventure will continue through wearers of this new timepiece.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s “Métiers Rares” Celebrating the work of Ferdinand Hodler
I
n 2018, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture once again highlights the expertise of its Rare Handcrafts “Métiers Rares” artisans with a series of three Reverso watches. Both sides of each piece feature miniature reproductions of paintings by the Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler in remarkable engraving and enamelling. In a fitting commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Hodler’s death, landscapes of mountains and lakes, so characteristic of the painter’s work, were chosen to decorate the case of the Reverso Tribute Enamel. This watch, with its iconic Art Deco styling, features a white gold case that was specially created to serve as a canvas for the enamel miniature. The three models are each issued in eight-piece limited editions. Remarkable guillochage work is featured on the front of the piece. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s artisan guillocheur has embellished
the dial with the help of a century-old machine requiring considerable expertise and years of experience. The dial’s small lozenges, giving the illusion as though they have been weaved, were created with finesse and delicate rendering. The engraving was then covered in translucent enamel. The colour of which, was carefully chosen to match the painting’s tone recreated on the reverse side. On the reverse of the watch, the handcrafted engraving continues, with lines tracing out an elegant frame for each of the enamelled paintings. This incredible work is unique on each model, enhancing the reproduced paintings, it is also a fitting supplement to the three gadroons so emblematic of the Reverso watch. The Reverso Tribute Enamel series was inspired by Ferdinand Hodler’s masterpiece. To remind one of the majestic serenity emanating from Hodler’s work, artisan enamellers spent more than fifty hours on each watch reproducing the Master’s paintings as faithfully as possible. Each painting presented particular challenges for JaegerLeCoultre’s enamellers. The main difficulty emerged from having to feature a large original painting on the 3cm2 surface area of the Reverso.

Fasten your seatbelts: the Freak is no longer a single timepiece. It’s an entire collection ! After the FREAK VISION launch at SIHH 2018 and the new FREAK VISION CORAL BAY, four new FREAK OUT timepieces, each armed with the in-house manual-wind caliber UN-205, are now joining the most maverick collection in Haute Horlogerie. All the game-changing Freak Out oddities are in place: no crown, dial or hands, a “flying carousel” tourbillon (the baguette movement rotates on its own axis) and superlight silici-um technology. Freak architecture replaces traditional anchor and anchor wheel with two silicium impulse wheels in the center. Both wheels have 18 engaging teeth, each activating an alternator that transmits its energy to the balance staff — first in one direction, then the other. Requiring no lubrication, the structure ensures that force is always released in the direction of the balance rotation, thereby minimizing friction. The silici-um hairspring beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hertz) and is only very slightly disturbed. The amount of disturbance is reduced to a minimum thanks to the low lift angle. Located between the lugs above the lower strap, a small lock is used to liberate the rotating bezel. This simply and precisely adjusts the hours and minutes when turned in either direction. The barrel, which of-fers a 7-day power reserve, is wound using the rear caseback bezel mounted on ball bearings. Unlike the earlier Freak Cruiser model in gold, the new FREAK OUT collection is forged from titanium, opening the Freak universe to a wider audience. Also new is the restyled case and bezel—borrowed from the Ulysse Nardin InnoVision 2 Concept Watch—and the matching bar tack loop stitchings on the sailcloth straps.

Laureato Skeleton Ceramic

Girard-Perregaux
irard-Perregaux is about to introduce its emblematic Laureato Skeleton model to the world of ceramics. Thus attired, the iconic Girard-Perregaux casual chic skeletonworked watch is also establishing itself in the world of black‌ while preserving the transparent side of its nature. The Laureato has a personality all its own. Its genetic code drives evolutions in various details of its appearance, while never distorting its essence. The Laureato is defined by a polished octagonal bezel fitted on an integrated case, meaning with no lugs or loops. The use of ceramics further accentuates its ergonomic qualities. This noble technical material is at once light, virtually scratchproof and extremely well tolerated by the skin. Its extreme hardness nonetheless makes it a material that is extremely hard to shape, especially when it comes to following the complex volumes of the Laureato. Despite the challenges, Girard-Perregaux chose to carve out the octagonal bezel and the shape of the bracelet links from a solid block of material, as well as to give them the required textures. As a horological icon, Laureato continues playing with contemporary codes. An architectural watch right the way through to the curves of its eminently visible movement, it adopts this new material like an extension of its inherent nature. It absorbs the structural and ergonomic benefits of ceramic and applies them to the service of wearer comfort. The absolute fashion colour and a must-have for professional watches, black suits the Laureato as if were born that way‌ In its black livery, the Laureato Skeleton Ceramic explores whole new fields of expression. More understated and more technical, it draws upon the infinite possibilities afforded by ceramics. Girard-Perregaux thus provides a reminder that sporting chic is not merely an expression or an empty phrase. The Laureato Skeleton Ceramic is a sports watch and a chic watch in equal measure.

rejuvenates the eye like a walk through a beautiful garden leaving it refreshed and inspired.
he Rado True Thinline Nature Collection is a beautiful fusion of nature and innovation taking the essence of Rado, and blending elements of the natural world into its design. The fruits of a creative partnership with Grandi Giardini Italiani - an organisation that promotes the rich heritage of grand Italian gardens - these additions to the True Thinline Collection celebrate the intersection between design and nature. In our increasingly urbanised lives, great pleasure can be taken from experiencing the vibrant colours of nature. The Rado designers took the very best elements of the natural world and
worked to incorporate this aesthetic into these new True Thinline models.
Whether it be the rich taupe brown of Earth, the deep midnight
blue of Water, or the verdant green of Leaf, each colour
Although the palette is simple and comes from nature, recreating these colours consistently in high-tech ceramic is incredibly difficult and, currently, only Rado has the expertise. To complement the lustrous cases and bracelets, each piece in the collection involves a unique dial treatment that echoes the natural world. Water gains a painted Mother-of-Pearl dial that evokes the ebb and flow of the open sea, Earth boasts a metallised coating, which reflects and refracts light beautifully, and Leaf sports green Mother-of-Pearl with a leaf structure applied to its underside which shimmers brilliantly in the light. The True Thinline is, in many ways, the ultimate Rado with its full high-tech ceramic construction, pioneering monobloc case and its lightness and thinness working in perfect harmony with its durable and scratch-resistant properties. Now, with the influence of nature, each piece subtly evokes beautiful aspects of the natural world, transforming these timepieces into something truly special, a calming and regenerative visual treat for the wrists of nature lovers.

The Summer of Ease rolls on... What would one give for a cool breeze right about now? Just imagine yourself on a boat, floating serenely into uncharted waters — isn’t that better?
C
apturing the mood of a mellow summer’s day, BOSS Menswear heads to the seaside for Spring/Summer 2018 in a collection entitled ‘Summer of Ease’. Silhouettes become looser and are marked by nautical detail for a lighter look for the new season.
STYLE
The brand’s strict tailored lines get an even softer take. Tailoring presents subtly oversized shapes, featuring loose-cut jackets and wide-leg pants. Slimmer designs still play a role but get a softer touch thanks to tapered fits.
It’s not just the silhouettes and fabrics that lighten the mood, but combinations and color. Slouchy knitwear completes tailoring along with sneakers and sandals, while nautical outerwear adds a sportswear touch.
The double-breasted suit is back, balancing sartorial flair and perfect ease. Softening the look and reducing the weight, unlined constructions ensure the clean designs sit well within its summer environment in both form and function.
Take a rubberized fisherman’s jacket over a suit, or a longline cotton raincoat with voluminous trousers and a slub-texture jersey sweater. Playing with the notion of nautical outerwear, a standout anorak in rubber-look nappa leather is paired with a shirt and neatly tailored trousers with sporty piping.
A spectrum of suits in garment-dyed cotton takes the sartorial icon into summer territory. These softly constructed suits are dyed once finished, resulting in shades with subtle variations in saturation for a beautifully easy-going finish. Fabric is key in this easier approach to suiting with lightweight paper-touch cotton, summer linen and modern seersucker textures.
Ingo Wilts: “There’s so much going on in the world right now, we want a kind of easiness and lightness in terms of clothes. We came up with this summer of ease.”
Breton stripes and color blocking are explored with a playful edge in nautical blues and yellows, sunset orange and signal red. Inspired by the weather-beaten hues of the coastline, cypress green, mid and cool blues and khaki ground the collection, while brilliant white fades into sunbleached cream, smoked pearl and flint-stone shades.

he leisurely lifestyle and understated elegance typical of the sun-kissed Riviera, from Italy across France, runs through the Ferragamo Spring-Summer 2018 men’s collection designed by Guillaume Meilland. Escapism at its best interpreted with a timeless yet timely appeal that conjures images of Alain Delon and Marcello Mastroianni in all their laid-back glamour.
Setting the mood is a breezy palette of earth-tones, ivory, gentle pinks and light blues that nod at traditional men’s shirting fabrics, plus flashes of hazy blues and deep mahogany.
From formal to casual, silhouettes are light, easy and deconstructed underscoring a work-into-week-end versatility and cool edge, defined by a crop of inventive fabrics and by signature details that are deeply intertwined with Ferragamo’s leather heritage and expertise. Inspired by life at the seaside, in solids or decorated with subtle marine patterns featuring wreathes of corals and seahorses, they are used for Bermuda shorts, coats and jackets. In a similar vein, spongy textures add a distinctive twist to a range of airy poloshirts and zipped cardigans. The shoes are quintessentially Ferragamo with rubber-soled penny loafers and booties adorned with the signature “Gancino” in organic materials such as wood and horn and clean lace-ups and slip-on moccasins in suede. Bags are structured and practical with mixes of canvas and leather in contrasting shades. From the promenade to the runway, the collection is at ode to a light-hearted elegance, redefining the house’s core values through a mix of legacy and immediacy.

Fluiditiy and movement
his highly dominant and defining characteristic of our times, this continual rhythm of change, seems to dictate the beat of a new style. The collective rules fade away before our eyes, and before we can construct new ones, each of us seeks assurance in our own personal identities. This is reflected in the way we choose to portray ourselves. Fashion responds to this, offering concepts suited to the new geographic and existential nomadic restlessness, creating everyday objects that adapt to a variety of conditions, indulging us with elegance and delicacy. Being a part of the Corneliani look is like belonging to a club where elective affinity determines membership. .
STYLE
The idea of fluidity and movement has been the inspiration for the next season, which offers a fully coordinated wardrobe that flows from a metropolitan look to one of leisure. The story we have dreamed up is of a voyage, through city and desert, structured in three chapters and written with the language of color, in pigments borrowed from an impressionist painting. SPRING TIME: This is dominated by cool tones: nuanced shades of the new “whale” blue are matched with masculine grays which are illuminated with an oil green accent, exclusively used for the accessories and knits. Techniques: New pinstripes with frisé effect and interrupted lines give a modern signature to traditional tailored fabrics. The crisp blues are conceived alongside warm grays and browns, in a series of proposals exploring the theme of windowpane patterns. Clever handling of the tones underlines textural contrasts, and new structures give a dynamism to fabrics and yarns, creating a look that is both casual and elegant. Strong contrasts, such as beige and black, hint at an identity that is sporty, yet sophisticated. Violet-toned inky hues run through the entire collection, creating a surprising harmony. Emphasis on detail creates a synthesis between sportswear and tailored garments: hydro zips, nylon with prints extracted from traditional drapery, and cottons with a membrane add functionality, while maintaining a tailored look. SUNNY TIME: The colors become bolder and blend to create new color combinations. The various shades of oil green illuminate and determine the balance of color. They are combined with all the shades of gray, from pale to black. Weightlessness is the dominant characteristic: garments are airy, and constructed in impalpable nylons, fabrics have strong mat weave textures and structures that are reminiscent of patterns created in sand blown by the wind. FULL SUMMER: A full-blown summer style is dominated by burnt tones of “terracotta” coupled with the purest white, and natural desert tones enriched with “tuareg blue” and ocher. The soft silhouette and natural fabrics contribute to the overriding sense of extreme sophistication and relaxation.

Lewis Hamilton joins Tommy Hilfiger Becomes new global brand ambassador
T
ommy Hilfiger has announced that British Formula One racing driver and four-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton as the new global brand ambassador for TOMMY HILFIGER men’s starting Spring 2018. The partnership reflects Tommy Hilfiger’s strategic commitment to build on its strong menswear heritage and further drive the global growth of its men’s business, bringing the next generation of fans to the brand. Why partner with Tommy Hilfiger? TOMMY HILFIGER is an iconic American brand that was impossible to miss as a kid, whether you were into fashion or not. Fashion is a growing love for me, and having attended the TOMMYNOW runway event for several seasons, I’m always amazed at how the brand is able to reinvent itself with every collection and through innovative technology. That takes a lot of creativity, and I’m super excited to join the TOMMY HILFIGER family. What do you like about Tommy Hilfiger designs? I like to stand out from the crowd, and Tommy Hilfiger’s cool, all-American designs allow me to add an effortless yet sophisticated twist to my outfits. From perfectly tailored suits to playful and elevated pieces, it’s a brand that caters for any occasion.
Lewis Hamilton’s fashion advice: “Why wear the same as everyone else? Fashion is about experimenting. Men should be confident about trying out new things. Do whatever suits your personality and your emotions, and take the time to find your style. Don’t try to be someone else. That’s all that matters.”
What are your favorite pieces from Spring 2018 pieces? I’m a big fan of light outerwear, like the versatile bright blue hooded jacket with racing stripe details from TOMMY HILFIGER Sportswear. I love the reversible satin bomber jacket from HILFIGER COLLECTION, which can dress up any look. What do you have in common with Tommy Hilfiger (the designer)? I’ve always admired how Tommy never gave up on his dreams of building a global lifestyle brand, even when times were tough. I believe that when you get knocked down, it’s not how you fall that matters, but how you get back up,

and Tommy and I both take life lessons away from these moments. Always believe in yourself, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve your goals. What is your first memory of Tommy Hilfiger? Growing up I remember seeing the iconic Tommy Hilfiger flag on clothes that celebrities wore, like hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg and Aaliyah. You got in a car with Gigi for the Spring 2018 campaign – what did you think of her driving skills? We had a laugh! Gigi was great behind the wheel even though she was quite nervous. It’s always fun sitting in the passenger seat and letting someone else roll with it. Where does your love of fashion come from? Growing up, all my family’s money went into racing, buying tires and fuel, so fashion is something I was quite oblivious to. I started exploring fashion in my early 20s, and I’ve grown to feel more confident about experimenting with different styles, and just being myself. I’m fortunate to have friends who work in the fashion industry, and I’m constantly fascinated by their creativity. What connection do you see between sport and fashion? Fashion is like racing, it never sleeps. In Formula One, fashion is not something teams and racing drivers necessarily focus on, but I’m obsessed with style. I always make sure to look classy in my race suit. What are five fashion essentials you cannot live without? Everyone should have a well-tailored suit. Wear it with a freshly pressed shirt and a great watch, and you can’t go wrong. A pair of well-fitted jeans is always a wardrobe essential. When I’m at home, I’m very casual and love to relax in tracksuits. I don’t like to dress like everyone else so I pick bright colors and patterns, adding my personal twist to the outfit.

omen in Kuwait are ready to take back their power and Dr. AlAnoud AlSharekh is leading them to the political corridors they may one day occupy, writes Zahra Husain.
PEOPLE
“The time for a change is here, and the women of Kuwait are more than ready” Dr. AlAnoud AlSharekh
An award winning human rights activist, an active voice on gender equality, a warrior for women’s empowerment movements and one of the founders of the Abolish 153, Dr. AlSharekh has now taken on the role of a mentor, helping Kuwaiti women with political ambitions acquire the skills and know-how they need to run for important offices in the country. From Co-ops, municipality, and NGOs, to Boards of Chamber of Commerce, and even the National Assembly. Empowering Kuwaiti Women in Politics (EKWIP), is a program supported by Dr. AlSharekh’s Ibtkar Strategic Consultancy, a company that works towards helping people fulfil their political ambitions. “There is real push for women in Kuwait to come ahead and take leadership positions. Through the New Kuwait 2035 program, the government itself is pushing for women’s empowerment. So when the opportunity arose, it only seemed natural for me to rise up to the challenge, and run a program that will help women in acquiring key decision making positions in the country. The time for a change is here, and the women of Kuwait are more than ready,” said Dr. AlSharekh, shedding light on the program. When it comes to gender equality and women’s empowerment in Kuwait, in Dr. AlSharekh’s opinion the biggest challenge is that there aren’t enough women in power positions. And even though there are men in public offices who are supportive of the cause, they don’t necessarily understand what it is like to be in a women’s shoes. Therefore, the best way to empower women, is through empowered women. Through an exhaustive selection process, 15 women from the initial 70 applicants have been chosen for the pilot edition of the EKWIP program. The program, which will run for
nine-months, will see these women going through rigorous training on subjects including public speaking, campaigning, logistics, and media interactions to name a few. The training will also include a two-week module in the United States where candidates will meet women leaders making their voices heard on the international podium. “We want the candidates to get exposure to what it is like to be on an international stage. The challenges those women have gone through to get themselves seen and heard I think will really inspire our candidates. The women leaders we want to create through this program should be of international caliber. When it comes to our ambitions with regards to our candidates, we are reaching for the sky,” emphasized Dr. AlSharekh. With ages ranging between early 20s to late 50s, the two things all the candidates have in common are, one – political ambition, two – commitment. “Nine months is a long time, and even so, it is only the beginning. Once the candidates complete the training, we at Ibtikar will start working on a strategic roadmap for them to be able to reach the offices they aspire to be in. Ideally we want our 15 candidates to reach 15 offices, and mentor 15 more women, who will then pay it forward to 15 more and on and on we go, until we reach a point where women can make themselves heard. Where we can drive real change on the policy-making level. No more just mere spectators but the makers of our own destiny and of the daughters to come after us.” In a country where, thus far, politics has been a man’s playground, Dr. AlSharekh, is trying to level the playing field. The fact is that there is strength in numbers, and the numbers of Kuwaiti women who want to bring about a real and quantifiable change in their society is on the rise.

World’s largest regatta
owes Week Ltd, the organisers of Lendy Cowes Week, the world’s largest regatta and a highlight of the British Summer Season, has announced its intention to work towards making the event more sustainable with the launch of a new sustainability initiative. Lendy Cowes Week has an impact on the water and on the shoreside with 100,000 people visiting during the regatta. CWL firmly believes that an event of this size should play its part in spreading the message about sustainability and minimising its own impact on the environment. Working with the event sponsors and four Official Venues: Cowes Parade, Cowes Yacht Haven, Northwood House and Shepards Wharf, CWL will be raising awareness of sustainability issues and highlighting how we can all help to make a difference, both on and off the water. Some of the initiatives planned for 2018 include installation of more water filling stations for the general public and competitors and improved waste recycling around the town. CWL has already made changes at its base, Regatta House, by switching to a sustainably sourced electricity provider, putting a comprehensive recycling programme in place and committing to no single use plastics in Regatta House itself. The Official Venues are committed to help reduce the use of polystyrene, Styrofoam and plastic cutlery and are looking into the wider use of reusable drinks cups that were trialled at the main Cowes Yacht Haven Bar in 2017. Banning the use of plastic straws across the event is also a key objective. The official charity, The 1851 Trust, will be inspiring young visitors to Lendy Cowes Week through a series of hands-on sustainability workshops, to excite them to become innovators of the future and stewards of the environment.

Kate Johnson, Commercial & Marketing Director for CWL said, “Sustainability is a real area of focus for us, and we know that it is high on the priority list of our competitors too. We believe that as a large flagship regatta we need to do what we can to minimise our impact on the environment and our waters, and set an example to others. We’re proud to be putting in place a sustainability initiative from 2018, and we will be building on this with further initiatives added over the coming years. It’s something that can only be achieved by working together, and we look forward to collaborating with our Official Venues, Sponsors and competitors to further this agenda within our sport.”

The ultimate guide to healthy aging
A
Eat, sleep and think
s the Preventive and Anti-Aging medicine doctor Dr. Vicente Mera claims, it’s not about going against the natural cycle of aging, it’s about improving quality of life to prevent premature and disease ridden aging. How we age is influenced directly with our lifestyle choices. Whilst we can’t freeze time or impede cellular aging, we can dictate the rate at which this occurs. We all secretly want to look our best and delay the process of aging, and luckily for us, with the advice of the best experts in Aging and Preventive Medicine, we can discover what the best tricks to keeping our body as healthy as possible, for as long as possible are. We all know what the main aging triggers are, such as smoking, poor diet, regular alcohol consumption, stress, insomnia and pollution, but do we know what our body needs to stay youthful? Nutrient-rich diet According to Dr.Mera, adopting an anti-aging diet, rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants can

prevent the shortening of telomeres. Telomeres are the extreme ends of chromosomes, where most of our DNA is found, and as we age, they begin to shorten. They influence our general state of health, metabolism oxidation and cellular aging. The interesting fact is that they don’t necessarily correspond to our chronological age. In fact, if you’re aging faster than you’re supposed to because of lifestyle choices, your telomeres will be shorter than they should be. To prevent this from happening, your diet should be rich in plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes, and you should include antiaging foods such as pomegranates, blueberries, spinach, kale, salmon, nuts, turmeric, avocado, mushrooms, cacao and maca root. Meditate Another less known factor that prevents premature aging is meditation. Studies show that practicing meditation

telomerase, the enzyme that shortens telomeres, therefore, slowing down the process of aging. In addition, meditation helps reduce stress levels, a great aging accelerator. Sleep The most overlooked remedy to age prevention is sleep. In a society that takes sleep for granted, it’s becoming even more important to highlight the fact that sleep is a healing, restoring and rejuvenating therapy for our body. Lack of sleep doesn’t only increase blood pressure, weaken the immune system, worsen memory, and affect our hormonal levels and mood, but it also causes our cells to age faster. Luckily for us, aging isn’t out of our control and there is a lot that we can do on our behalf to prevent it from affecting us prematurely. With a balanced, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich diet, as well as meditation, sleep and exercising, we can keep our body feeling young from the inside out.

We’re a sucker for the latest diet, always believing that this is The One. Should you get on this faddy-boat?
The Grapefruit Diet: This citrus saw a rise in popularity in the ‘70s due to a diet that promised quick weight loss. According to Healthline, the premise of the Grapefruit Diet was to eat a grapefruit with every meal. The thought was that the grapefruit contained a special enzyme that burns fat fast. Although the diet may lead to weight loss, it isn’t because of the fruit. “Grapefruit has no special properties when it comes to weight loss,” Elisabetta Politi, nutrition manager of the Duke University’s Diet and Fitness Center, tells Health. The Scarsdale Diet: The Scarsdale Diet emphasized protein consumption and banned snacking, according to Healthline. Another rapid weight loss program, critics of the diet said it missed out on important macronutrients and was not sustainable in the long term. The Cabbage Soup Diet: The name says it all: you eat nothing but cabbage soup for seven to 10 days. According to Marie Claire, people claim to lose up to 10 pounds on the Cabbage Soup Diet - but not permanently. “Because the Cabbage Soup Diet has such a low calorie intake and virtually no protein, almost all weight lost on this diet will be water and muscle, not body fat,” personal trainer and fitness coach Scott Laidler tells the publication. The South Beach Diet: Cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston introduced the South Beach Diet - named after a poplar Miami spot - in 2003. According to the official site, the highprotein, low-carb diet began as a solution to “quick fix diets” that left people hungry: particularly, Atkins. Thought critics have found this to be a sustainable diet, Health reports that the South Beach Diet encourages consumption of processed vegetable oils, which could pose health risks. The Baby Food Diet: Baby food is conveniently portioned, making it the ideal snack for people watching their caloric intake. Or, at least, that’s the thought behind the Baby Food Diet, a meal plan in which you replace real food with its pureed counterpart. Although this diet ensures you eat your fruits and vegetables, Everyday Health noted that it lacks the fiber, fat, and protein required to keep you full and functioning.
Some diets you should never try
T
...and some you should. Diets from history - why some of them never worked
hroughout the years, we’ve been inundated with stories of magical and mystical diets. Although one or two of these diets have stood the test of time, many fall into the fad category: they are popular for a minute, but become obsolete the minute they are proven to be ineffective and - in some cases - dangerous.
WELLNESS
Weight Loss: For one, the extra kick of hot sauce or a chopped jalapeno can make even the most bland diet food more palatable, causing you to be more likely to stick with your weight loss plan. In addition, they may jack up your metabolism. Studies show that the main compound in chilies, called capsaicin, has a thermogenic effect and may cause the body to burn bonus calories for 20 minutes post chow-down.
Spicy foods have health benefits, and so our bodies crave them. we look at some of the most-studied pluses...
Heart Health: Studies show that cultures that eat the most spicy food have much lower incidence of heart attack and stroke. Potential reasons: Chili peppers can reduce the damaging effects of LDL (bad cholesterol) and capsaicin may fight inflammation, which has been flagged as a risk factor for heart issues. Cancer Prevention: According to the American Association for Cancer Research, capsaicin has the ability to kill some cancer and leukemic cells. One particular spice, turmeric, found in curry powder and some mustards, may slow the spread of cancer and growth of tumors. “It has the same effects on the body as certain cancer drugs do.” says Gregory A. Plotnikoff, M.D., senior consultant for health care innovation at Allina Hospitals and Clinics in Minnesota. Pair it with black pepper to absorb 2,000 percent more turmeric. Fantastic on roasted veggies or kebabs, or in soups. Lower Blood Pressure: Vitamins A and C strengthen the heart muscle walls, and the heat of the pepper increases blood flow throughout your body. All of this equals a stronger cardiovascular system. Fewer Blow-Your-Top Moments: Spicy foods boost production of feel-good hormones, such as serotonin. So they may help ease depression and stress. Not a fan of crazy-spicy food? You can still get the health benefits by adding spices with a more tolerable zing to your dishes. We love sliced ginger in a cup of tea, shrimp coated in cumin and coriander then sauteed in a skillet, adding red pepper flakes to stir-fry or whipping up a delish chicken curry.
The pleasure in the pain
S
Why chili is good for you
picy foods are a bit of a mystery. Why is it that we find such pleasure in pain? I mean, these hot sauce bottles are plastered with words like “death” and “atomic”... and we like them. One theory is that it’s simply for the thrill - like riding a roller coaster or running a marathon. Humans, oddly, find pleasure in things that, on the surface, should be really freaking scary and painful.
