Looking after your Mental Health 1. Mental Health Matters Facilitator Training for NON-TEACHERS As mental health problems are increasing, it is now more important than ever for people to be introduced to the concept of positive mental health. The Mental Health Matters programme, is a direct response to the concerns expressed by members of the public regarding a wide range of mental health issues. The programme is designed to be realistic and help people identify and access relevant support so they can respond in appropriate ways to emerging mental health difficulties in their lives. The programme aims to trigger discussions and role play on issues such as substance misuse, bullying, relationship difficulties and family conflict. The programme also addresses the issue of stigma, and aims to reduce stigma associated with mental health, by encouraging participants to talk openly about their emotions and mental health difficulties. It is hoped that through participation in this project people will be better equipped to identify crisis in their lives and feel able to seek help should they need it. This essential foundation of good mental health learned through the programme will aim to help reduce depression amongst people and assist in reducing rising suicide rates, as participants acquire positive coping strategies for responding to various crises that may affect them. The programme materials include; a booklet of six modular based units - each of which explores different themes and a DVD which features the personal case studies / testimonies of individuals affected by mental health problems. The resources can be used in either schools or through any forum working with people such as youth groups or community organisations. • This peer discussion approach is an appropriate way to stimulate debate on mental health issues Mental Health Matters is designed to allow facilitators the flexibility to adapt the exercises and includes lesson plans; worksheets; group work; cross curricular activities. Upon completion of the programme participants will receive a certificate of participation and a resource pack. Facilitators: Ted Tierney; Finola Colgan & Bill Vaughan - MHI Development Officers Date and Time: Tuesday, 5th March 2013, 10am - 4pm Venue: The Clarion Hotel, Liffey Valley, Dublin 22.

Facilitators: Ted Tierney; Linda Thorpe & Dan O’Connor - MHI Development Officers Date and Time: Tuesday, 9th July 2013, 10am - 4pm Venue: The Clarion Hotel, Liffey Valley, Dublin 22. 2. Substance Misuse and Mental Health Dual diagnosis describes people who have mental health problems and drug or alcohol problems. The mental health problems may include schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder or personality disorder. Dual diagnosis might also be a term used in other contexts, such as when someone has a mental health problem and a learning disability. It is common for someone with a mental health problem to also have problems with alcohol and drug use. Having a dual diagnosis usually involves more than the two issues of mental health and substance misuse. The diagnosis of a mental health condition is made by a doctor or psychiatrist. It is important that during a mental health assessment the potential role of substance misuse is looked at. Facilitators: Ted Tierney and Bill Vaughan - MHI Development Officer Date and Time: Tuesday, 23rd July 2013, 10am - 4pm Venue: The Clarion Hotel, Liffey Valley, Dublin 22. 3. Other Issues in Mental Health 1. Understanding Stigma, Discrimination and Mental Illness (Including information on Accessing the Mental Health Services & Advocacy and Mental Health) The module explores what is meant by stigma and discrimination in the context of mental health. It looks at how people with mental illness are marginalised and the impact this has on their recovery. Participants will gain a greater understanding of different ways to tackle stigma and discrimination and will discuss national and international programmes that have been developed in a response to this issue. This module also informs the participant on key issues such as: Accessing the Mental Health Services This module aims to increase awareness about accessing the mental health service in Ireland. It outlines the steps you can take if you suspect you or a member of your family is experiencing a mental health issue. It clearly explains the ‘who’s who’ of the mental health service and the different type of support offered by each health professional in the mental health service. This training would be of particular benefit to those who work with the general public and are from a non-health related background. Advocacy and Mental Health This module introduces participants to the concept of advocacy, the different types of advocacy, why advocacy is important in the area of mental health and the different advocacy platforms available to people in Ireland. Facilitators: Ted Tierney; Michael Noble & Finola Colgan. Date and Time: Tuesday, 5th November 2013, 10am - 4pm Venue: The Clarion Hotel, Liffey Valley, Dublin 22. 2. The Recovery Model In mental health, recovery does not always refer to the process of complete recovery from a mental health problem in the way that we may recover from a physical health problem. What is recovery? For many people, the concept of recovery is about staying in control of their life despite experiencing a mental health problem. Professionals in the mental health sector often refer to the ‘recovery model’ to describe this way of thinking. Putting recovery into action means focusing care on supporting recovery and building the resilience of people with mental health problems, not just on treating or managing their symptoms. 10
There is no single definition of the concept of recovery for people with mental health problems, but the guiding principle is hope – the belief that it is possible for someone to regain a meaningful life, despite serious mental illness. Recovery is often referred to as a process, outlook, vision, conceptual framework or guiding principle. Facilitators: Ted Tierney; Brenda Healy & Liam Minogue Date and Time: Tuesday, 19th November 2013, 10am - 4pm Venue: The Clarion Hotel, Liffey Valley, Dublin 22. 3. Mental Health Matters Facilitator Training for POST-PRIMARY TEACHERS* free of charge As mental health problems are on the increase, it is now more important than ever for young people to be introduced to the concept of positive mental health. Facilitators: Staff of Mental Health Ireland Date and Time: Tuesday, 17th December 2013, 10am - 4pm Venue: The Clarion Hotel, Liffey Valley, Dublin 22.
