The mental health problems may include schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder or personality disorder. Dual diagnosis might also be a term used in other contexts, such as when someone has a mental health problem and a learning disability. It is common for someone with a mental health problem to also have problems with alcohol and drug use. Having a dual diagnosis usually involves more than the two issues of mental health and substance misuse. The diagnosis of a mental health condition is made by a doctor or psychiatrist. 17. The Recovery Model In mental health, recovery does not always refer to the process of complete recovery from a mental health problem in the way that we may recover from a physical health problem. What is recovery? For many people, the concept of recovery is about staying in control of their life despite experiencing a mental health problem. Professionals in the mental health sector often refer to the ‘recovery model’ to describe this way of thinking. Putting recovery into action means focusing care on supporting recovery and building the resilience of people with mental health problems, not just on treating or managing their symptoms. There is no single definition of the concept of recovery for people with mental health problems, but the guiding principle is hope – the belief that it is possible for someone to regain a meaningful life, despite serious mental illness. Recovery is often referred to as a process, outlook, vision, conceptual framework or guiding principle Facilitators: Ted Tierney; Brenda Healy; Myra Walshe & Michael Noble - MHI Development Officers Date and Time: Tuesday, 20th November 2012, 10am - 4pm Venue: The Clarion Hotel Dublin Liffey Valley, Liffey Valley, Dublin 22 18. Social Housing Social Housing is identified in the MHI Strategic Plan 2009 – 2013 as a key area of activity for MHI. Social Housing has been traditionally provided by a number of local Mental Health Associations (MHAs). • • • • •

Are the housing needs of people with mental health difficulties different from that of other homeless people? What is the difference between supported accommodation and hospital or residential care? What is the role of the Statutory Bodies in providing housing? How are residents facilitated in participating in the management and upkeep of housing project? How can local authorities best support MHAs in their role in providing social housing?
