Jedson makes it look easy in McCall 6-year-old Jedson Waters wins bronze BY JON MENTZER Wood River Journal Local skateboarding prodigy Jedson Waters made it look easy by winning the bronze medal in the 2008 Concrete Rodeo Tour in McCall last weekend. Jedson, who is just 6-years-old, has only been skateboarding for a year, but has already built an impressive resume by winning a gold medal in the Fourth of July skateboard competition in Ketchum and two more silvers, plus his bronze medal.
Jedson was in the 3-to-8-yearold category in the Concrete Rodeo and was the youngest in the entire competition. Jedson scored an overall score of 58.6. The winner, Gabe Ferguson, scored 70.6 and second place finisher Griffin Chase scored a 65 in the 3-to-8 category. Other Valley skaters who competed in McCall were Gene Fairbrother who came in 9th in the 15-to-16 category, Ben Parker and Wyatt Caccia who finished 12th and 15th, respectively in the 11-to-12 catgory. The event in McCall was the last leg in the Concrete Rodeo and was also the grand nationals in the 2008 season. The Fourth of July competition
in Ketchum qualified Waters for McCall. Jedson’s father, Lamar, was driving past the Hailey skate park one day when Jedson began asking questions about skateboarding. Lamar gave Jedson the chance to try out the sport, and low and behold, Jedson quickly became addicted to the thrill and excitement. “Hailey prepped him to go anywhere,” Lamar said . “He likes to go fast.” Jedson Waters has since picked up snowboarding to complement his skateboarding and has been applying what he learned during the winter to his skateboarding competitions.

Twin Falls — After last year’s third place finish in the state legion tournament, Wood River aimed to make another trip this year. The Wranglers; however, ran into early problems in the district tournament in Twin Falls and ultimately lost, ending its season. With the third seed heading into last week’s district tournament, Wood River played Burley to open the first round. Pat Patterson got the start, but Burley’s Marcus Hoskins got the win as he struck out seven Wood River batters on his way to a complete game as the Bobcats surprised the Wranglers by winning 5-1. Patterson struggled in 3 1/3 innings and gave up nine hits and five runs. He also struck out five batters. The lone bright spots for Wood River was Trent Seamons, who finished the day going 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base, and Jimmy Hague, who went 1-for-3 and knocked in the Wrangers’ only run in the seventh inning. The loss put Wood River in the loser’s bracket to face the Idaho Falls Rangers who lost to Kimberly 5-2 in the opening round. Wood River turned its full attention to Idaho Falls and dominated every aspect of the game by winning 11-1 in only five innings of play. Seamons got the start and threw a no-hitter in the process. Seamons said he had no idea of the no-hitter during the game and was notified right after the third out in the fifth inning. Idaho Falls scored its only run when Seamons walked the very first batter of the game who would then come around to score on a fielder’s choice and an error. Seamons also had a good day at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. In the second inning, Greg Wakefield added a little excitement when he blasted a solo home run, starting a five-run third inning. Wakefield’s home run was his only hit of the day, but he also scored three runs. In the third inning, Michale Brunker, who would go on to go 3for-4 with three runs and an RBI, singled and would come around to score off a Patterson double as Wood River opened up a five-run inning. Idaho Falls didn’t help its chances by committing five errors on the day. Wood River then advanced to take on Blackfoot, which didn’t allow the Wranglers to get anything going. Blackfoot wound up ending Wood River’s season by winning 12-0 in five innings. Blackfoot led 2-0 early before blowing the game wide open. Chase Munson hit a solo home run and Zach Reay chipped in with a two-run double for Blackfoot. Wood River stranded runners in every inning, but couldn’t get any timely hitting. The Wranglers also hurt themselves by committing six errors. Blackfoot’s Brakkin Leavitt got the win and Wood River’s Sean Bunce got the loss.
