FA M I LY The family dynamic fascinates and mystifies me. It’s the core of our human experience which is why I’m so interested in watching and documenting family interaction. And I’ve met and photographed countless families all over the world, witnessing the breadth of family life, from the birth of a child to the death of a beloved father, and everything in between.
As a photojournalist I learned to arrive as a stranger, gain trust and then capture split second moments that tell a story. Later in my career, for advertising clients, I’d assemble an ideal family through casting. Without the experience of watching and learning how real families behave I could never have succeeded in bringing authenticity to the photographs I made of the families I created.
As it turned out, all that time with other families taught me a lot about how to be a father and husband. Everyone has challenges in their life and mine is no different, but they are so much easier to bear when you have the strength of family to draw on.
Over my career, our definition of family has evolved well beyond the TV sitcom ideal so that today we are inclusive of every possible configuration of people. Here is a selection of family moments from my portfolio that reflects some of the variety and richness of family life that I’ve observed, all of it fueled by love.
