Abstract The role of private sector practitioners in the housing system plays a great contribution to the overall resilience of the city. Through an exploratory case study of these actors in Sheffield, this research reveals how private housing practitioners have responded to the local climatic impacts and resilience strategies. The findings show that private sector practitioners of Sheffield housing system identify flooding as the most noticeable weather event of the city, but they do not show confidence in linking extreme weather events to wider impacts of climate change. Their companies tend to react to climatic impacts by complying with high quality standards and they are greatly influenced by market forces. Among the participants, Arup is a catalytic player in resilience research and policy agendas. Due to funding, political and perceptual issues, resilience agendas in Sheffield have been slowed down but private sector practitioners of the housing system are still active in finding opportunities for themselves.
