Digital Signages with AI will Command a Larger Market Share

4

Digital signages, LED and other related industries can increase their market share by adopting an artificial intelligence framework. This is a work in progress, however, International Expo Consults (IEC) believes that the players with the AI vision will have the first mover advantage and the impact can be witnessed in a span of 2-3 years. According to the IEC, the organisers of ‘SGI Dubai 2019’, Middle East’s largest sign and graphic imaging show, some of the exhibitors have already started evaluating their products and solutions and are approaching the ‘market ready’ phase. Exhibitors at the SGI Dubai 2019 show could generate leads with over several million US dollars in just three days. The 23rd edition of SGI Dubai 2020 is scheduled from January 12th to 14th in Halls 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. According to Sharif Rahman, CEO, International Expo-Consults, “SGI Dubai 2019 exceeded our expectations with visitors keeping the show floor busy till the end of the third day. This edition of SGI saw an

impetus on innovative solutions in the printing, signage, LED, retail, textile and other industries. We aim to build on the momentum of this show and take it to the next year with several new categories”. After careful evaluation of the market scenario and listening to the exhibitors and more-importantly the visitors, SGI Dubai 2020 will include new categories such as Artificial Intelligence; Advanced Display Technologies such as outdoor 3D screens, holographic displays, bendy displays; Branding and Labelling and lastly Metal Cutting and Engraving. GX Media, one of the exhibitors at SGI Dubai 2019 had come up with a unique solution that redefined branding and advertising in elevators. Their short-focus projection requires less distance and can project a larger video at shorter distances. The entire setup is easy to install and compared to conventional projectors that can only be installed in the middle of the elevator, they have the advantage of being compact, with less installation shadows and

avoiding direct light to the eyes. It took about a year of development and testing to achieve the technological breakthrough and the product boasts of 19 patented technologies. The 2020 show which will be the 23rd edition of SGI Dubai, will be a completely different show from its predecessors. Much like the industry that it serves, the show has gone through various stages of evolution. To keep up with the changing technology and the trends in the industry and to stay relevant to the various visitors that grace the show, SGI Dubai 2020 will extend into allied fields that it hadn’t focused on in the past. According to the organisers, SGI Dubai has been the most anticipated event for the industry in the MENA region and the evolution lies in with their aim to not just be the largest show in the Middle East but one of the largest industry trade shows globally.

Xerox Launches the Iridesse Production Press in Oman

6

Xerox has launched the Iridesse Production Press in Oman on January 23, 2019. The Iridesse Production Press is the only digital press that can print metallic gold or silver dry ink, CMYK and clear dry ink in a single pass, giving print providers an immediate competitive edge in the growing digital print enhancement market. The launch event was held at Sindbad Ball Room, Crowne Plaza Hotel – Qurum, Oman, and was hosted by Bishara, Xerox’s Authorized Distributor. The event kick-started at 10:30am on January 23, 2019. Invitees to the event included Commercial Printers, Graphic Arts Clients from Government and Private sectors. With two inline speciality dry ink stations, customers can create lucrative applications with spot colours, metallic and mixed metallic gradients, and speciality enhancements. Gold and silver dry metallic inks can be used on their own or layered under or over CMYK to create unique iridescent palettes. A layer of clear dry ink can be added for an extra touch of dimension or texture. Xerox FreeFlow Core’s pre-built workflows enable print providers to automatically and selectively transform text and graphics for printing

gold and silver without editing the source documents. This simplifies enhancing existing applications with high-value embellishments. Iridesse eliminates multiple presses and processes usually required for print embellishments, increasing capacity and profits for customers. Printing at speeds up to 120 pages per minute, the press can run stocks from 52 -400 gsm. Additional press features include: • The High Definition Emulsion Aggregate (HD EA) Toner process results in the optimal particle size to deliver lower gloss, smooth tints and fine detail more consistently. • The Xerox EX-P 6 Print Server by Fiery enables customers to create

customized workflows for metallic applications with advanced RIP capabilities and color management tools. • Two Dual Advanced High Capacity Feeders, Bypass and Inserter options let customers run up to eight different stocks in a single job or do production runs with a total of 12,500 sheets. • A variety of finishing options are available including the new Xerox Crease and Two-sided Trimmer, which creates a durable crease fold and gives booklets a premium quality edge when used with the Xerox Production Ready Booklet Maker Finisher and Xerox SquareFold Trimmer Modules.

Xplorer 3D Plans to Print Human Organs

8

As 3D printers become more sophisticated, their application goes beyond printing plastics to metals and eventually human tissue. Xplorer 3D, a Pakistani startup which now has its headquarters in the UAE, is already experimenting with different materials and the company has its sights set on printing human tissue. Launched in 2013 as a 3D-printing services company, founder and managing director Tayyab Alam initially found it difficult to “get the word out”. “We were passionate about it so we stuck with it for some time. By 2015, we were in Dubai and in 2017 we expanded to Saudi Arabia,” says Alam. The company now produces 3Dprinters which are assembled in Pakistan for the manufacturing,

healthcare, education, defence and fashion industries, with more than 50 different 3D-printing models which it uses to customise products for specific requirements. “We can print metal, titanium, which caters to a lot of different industries including aerospace and defence,” says Alam. “3D-printing is an integral part of the manufacturing process.” Using 3D-printers to create prototypes helps reduce costs and time spent by up to 90 per cent according to Alam. A 3D rendering of the product is uploaded onto the printer which begins printing each layer. “Before 3D-printing, manufacturers weren’t able to prototype their ideas, they’d get moulds from China which is expensive,” says Alam. “Right now,

we are manufacturing things and buying things. In the future we will be downloading products.” 3D-printing technology first appeared in the late 1970s and is now an industry worth $7 billion according to the Wohlers Report. Dubai made headlines around the world in 2016 when it printed the first office space with plans for a quarter of the emirate’s buildings to be 3D-printed by 2030. Meanwhile Lebanon’s Buildink developed a 3D-printer which prints cement blocks and Jordan’s ROW prints prosthetic limbs for Syrian amputees. While the Middle East has found innovative uses for 3D-printing, much of it has been used for manufacturing purposes, but this is changing according to Alam

UAE Banks Federation Outlines Action Plan to Combat Cheque Fraud UAE Banks Federation (UBF) in coordination with UBF IT Committee, hosted today (January 22, 2019) a workshop dedicated to UBF member banks to address a new and innovative approach in combatting cheque fraud. The workshop identified proposed improvements to the current cheque verification process, specifically how changes could be made to limit incidences of fraud and support the nation’s move towards becoming a cashless society. Counterfeit cheques currently expose banks, businesses and customers to financial, reputational and legal risks. Sophisticated printing technologies have pushed incidences of fraud to increase, and UBF member banks are keen to work together to combat this risk. During the workshop, UBF speakers stated that, going forward,

member banks would increasingly seek to make use of QR codes to improve cheque security, introducing enhanced encryption technology to discourage fraud. The new approach will see individual cheques allocated a random number that can then be read electronically during an automated validation process. The number is unique to the specific cheque and will ensure that only legitimate cheques will be honored by banks. Commenting on the decision by UBF members to embrace this innovative new technology, H.E. AbdulAziz Al Ghurair, said, “We are committed to enhancing the security of the UAE financial system and today’s announcement is further evidence of our collective desire to tackle the issue of cheque fraud. “By introducing technology that

allows us to detect problems in real time, we are confident that we can lessen the impact of fraud on our customers. In addition, these changes will improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and lay the foundations for further innovation that will benefit the banking sector.”

Gaya Gold Coffee Launches Redesigned Packaging for its Iced Coffee Cans on the base and lid of the can that complements the gold-speckled print on the dark green-colored body. Sources further claim that the can was tested and trialed on the prototyping & pilot production line of Ardagh Group at its R&D center in France. Martin de Olde, Business Development & Marketing Manager at Metal division, Ardagh Group, expressed pride over the company’s newest and most innovative project. He further revealed that the most pleasant thing about this development is the achievement of a brilliant result in terms of added value and shelf differentiation by extending the confines of manufacturing and packaging design. Ardagh group is a global frontrunner in packaging solutions that supplies infinitely-recyclable, value-added glass and metal

packaging solutions for leading brands across the globe. The company has immense global presence with operations at over 100 manufacturing facilities in around 22 countries along with more than 23,000 employees and global sales surpassing about $8.6 billion.

SGIA Opens Registration for Second FP3 Conference

10

The Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) has opened registration for this year's FP3: Functional Printing, Process & Products (May 5–7, Itasca, Illinois). Super early bird registration fees are in place through February 15. SGIA’s Industrial Applications and Printed Electronics Committee designed FP3 for business leaders

who want to learn more about the scope of the functional printing marketplace, grasp the latest industry and business trends — and understand how to capitalize on them. Sponsors to date are Memcon (Platinum), Saati (Supporting) and Sakurai USA Inc. (Supporting). “FP3 gives attendees a number of ways to examine the world of functional printing,” said Joyia Marshall, Community Development Manager, SGIA. “Our conference sessions explore topics applicable to printed electronics, industrial applications and business; the Sponsor Showcase is an opportunity to connect with industry-leading suppliers; and we create multiple networking opportunities, so attendees connect with thought leaders and peers.” Don McMillan, the engineerturned-comedian who emceed the

2018 FP3 conference, will reprise his role and keep attendees laughing. “Fun is a key component of adult learning, and Don will definitely bring that element to the conference,” Marshall added. Registration includes a welcome reception with exhibits, all general sessions and breaks, breakfast and lunch. Add-on events for the 2019 FP3 conference include the “Executive Leadership Workshop: Persuasion and Storytelling,” led by featured speaker Colby B. Jubenville, Ph.D., a Western BBQ dinner and the Dinner & Casino Night. “The return on my investment from this conference was the knowledge that I gained by better understanding innovative industrial technologies that I was not aware of. That’s learning!” said 2018 attendee Chris Eckhart, President, Eckhart & Co. Inc.

Tetra Pak to Offer New Levels of Customization and Flexibility A first for the beverage carton industry, this investment taps the power of digital on-package printing to offer new possibilities for beverage brands. Tetra Pak is to become the first company in the food and beverage carton industry to offer full-colour digital printing on its carton packages, working in collaboration with Koenig & Bauer AG, a global leader in the field. The digital printing technology will simplify the complexity of design handling, reducing time from design to print and opening up new opportunities for flexibility in order placement and product customisation. Beverage brands can take advantage of added benefits like dynamic on-package printing and the ability to include a variety of designs within the same order. The full-width Koenig & Bauer

RotaJET 168 digital printer is currently being built by Koenig & Bauer and will be installed at Tetra Pak’s converting plant at Denton, Texas. Field testing of the new, digitally-printed carton packages is expected to begin in early 2020 with North American customers. Carmen Becker, President and CEO of Tetra Pak U.S. and Canada, said, “Brands continue to look for opportunities to deliver greater customisation and personalisation of their products. We’re thrilled to offer our customers new and innovative ways to engage with consumers, all while increasing flexibility in the design and order process.” Christoph Müller, Member of the Board of Koenig & Bauer said, “We are absolutely delighted that Tetra Pak has decided in favour of

our digital printer. Collaboration between our companies is on an extremely constructive and trusting basis. I am sure that, together, we will significantly change the market for the benefit of Tetra Pak customers.”

Rapida 106 for Frischmann Druck und Medien ning at maximum capacity in three shifts. “The Rapida 106 will make us more flexible during peak production periods and streamline our processes,” explains Jürgen Frischmann. It will process substrates between 90 and 400 g/m² (57 - 257lbs), including solid bleached sulphate board and other high-quality substrates. A host of automation modules ensure maximum performance. QualiTronic ColorControl with PrintCheck for monitoring print quality is one of Jürgen Frischmann’s most valued features. The log functions provide complete proof of the print quality. “We can easily show our customers how production went,” says the managing director. Cutting-edge measuring technology from Koenig & Bauer offers several functions at the same time: The Rapida 106 for Frischmann

Druck und Medien is equipped with systems allowing colour densities to be controlled and production monitored with just one camera system. The press crew is notified when deviations from the reference parameters occur. At the same time, a tape inserter marks the waste produced in the pile. The operators sort out faulty sheets before the sheets are finished.

ME‌Printer February 2019

“Enhanced performance and more stability in the printing process” were the reasons behind Jürgen Frischmann‘s, managing director of Frischmann Druck und Medien, decision to purchase a Rapida 106. At the beginning of January he visited Koenig & Bauer in Radebeul to learn more about the assembly status of his five-colour press with coater. It will be delivered to the family-run business in Amberg/Germany in March and will also be the company’s first Koenig & Bauer sheetfed offset press in its 50-year history. With state-of-the-art automation solutions, printing speeds of up to 18,000 sheets per hour and short makeready times, the mediumformat system replaces an aging predecessor. The new press is expected to enhance productivity at Frischmann, especially seeing as the pressroom is already run-

TheIJC USA Launches Call for Papers

12

After an enthusiastic reception of the inaugural edition last year, The Inkjet Conference (TheIJC) returns to USA on 22-23 May 2019. Staged at Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare the event features 20 hours of industrial presentations and technical lectures on the newest developments in inkjet engineering and inkjet chemistry. Companies and research institutes are now called to submit their presentation abstracts. TheIJC has been developed by the European Specialist Printing Manufactures Association (ESMA) and Digital Direct Technologies in partnership with drupa, the no. 1 worldwide exhibition for printing technologies. The first European edition was launched in 2014 and since then the conference has experienced a continuous growth in both individual attendees and the number of companies who come to learn and network about the advances in industrial inkjet. Following the success in Europe and increasing demands to enter

a more global dimension, TheIJC held their first US event in April 2018, with a total of 225 participants who proved very positive in their feedback. “The conference was outstanding in providing digital inkjet printing information,” exclaimed Gary Jagielo from WestRock. “Conference presented an excellent range of topics and subject matter experts. I found TheIJC to be very thought provoking and great for idea generation,” said Mike Embree, Director of Engineering at Citronix. With 40 presentation slots scheduled for this year, the event covers all factors which influence the print system performance and productivity. “Inkjet and digital encompass a diverse range of topics and technologies, including precision engineering, chemistry, electronics, software, database management, hydraulic systems, surface science, colour management, inkjet printheads and of course a huge knowledge about the specific application. In isolation each of these topics

are quite straight forward, but it is their interaction and a weakness in any one of them that will affect system performance. Just as we start to understand one area, we discover several more to explore. To know where to start is always a challenge. TheIJC offers guidance for both newcomers and professionals from specific domains who want to broaden their expertise,” explains Steve Knight, co-founder of TheIJC. The conference programme is grouped into key inkjet topics: Track one being focused on printheads, hardware, software and integration technologies, whilst track two is focused on inkjet ink, ink components, laboratory testing, curing surface science and application related topics. Strong in its innovation aspect, TheIJC welcomes submissions not only from key industry players but also from emerging start-ups and universities who want to highlight blue sky science and the future direction their research is leading them.

David Bowie Tribute Car to be First Ever Full-Scale 3D Printed Concept Car

ME‌Printer February 2019

Massivit 3D Printing Technologies, the leading provider of large format 3D printing solutions, in partnership with Marie 3D – large format 3D printing specialists– and renowned car designer, Takumi Yamamoto, will unveil the world’s first 3D printed, full-scale concept car. The tribute to David Bowie will be a star attraction at this year’s prestigious Festival Automobile International (FAI) taking place in Paris from January 31 to February 3. Takumi Yamamoto, designer of the esteemed GT by Citroen and a former leading designer at the PSA Peugeot Advanced Design Studio, is the creative force behind this concept car which is a consummation of his life-long passions for car design and David Bowie. Parisbased Marie 3D identified that 3D printing was the only feasible pro-

14

duction method for implementing the concept car due to its capability to produce complex and creative geometry forms. Traditional manufacturing methods, including CNC routing, would have proven limited in terms of realizing Takumi Yamamoto’s vision. Furthermore, 3D printing turned out to be more cost-effective, having a faster production speed and less waste production. The car has been 3D printed on Marie 3D’s Massivit 1800 large format 3D printer. The company has an established standing in the auto-

mobile industry and this innovative project, leveraging Managing Director Philippe Marie’s expertise in prototyping as well as his timely adoption of a Massivit 3D printer, has paved the way for an entirely new approach to producing concept prototypes. Other important players in the project include Cyrille Ancely and Alexandre Larnac. Industrial designer, Cyrille Ancelly, worked on bringing Yamamoto’s dream to life by developing the design and transforming the concept into a 3D model. CG artist, Alexandre Larnac, turned the concept car’s screen-based 3D model into realistic renderings and animations giving the impression that the car was actually driving on the road whilst keeping the artistic inspiration of David Bowie’s spirit.

Heidelberg Reaches Important Strategic Milestones

ME‌Printer February 2019

Throughout financial year 2018/2019, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is consistently pursuing its strategy of using digitization and collaborations to establish business models that deliver sustainable profitability. This includes, on the one hand, the move announced January 23, 2019 to reinforce activities in the growth market of packaging printing by expanding the partnership with China-based Masterwork. The intension is to expand the strong market position in this segment, better address the potential in China and Asia, and achieve efficiency improvements by further extending cooperation in production. On the other hand, Heidelberg has also reached key milestones in the roll-out of its “Heidelberg goes digital” strategy. Following the signing of 26 contracts for the new subscription model in the first nine months, the next interim target, as previously announced, is 30 contracts by the end of the financial year. This corresponds to an order volume of approximately €150 million.

16

In addition, series production of the Primefire digital press is continuing and the Heidelberg Digital Unit has been created to handle the significant expansion in e-commerce sales. Future growth will also be driven by the sector’s largest and most advanced innovation center, which was opened in Wiesloch in December. Heidelberg is furthermore able to make ever greater use of its skills outside the printing sector, such as in electromobility. For example, the 1000th Heidelberg Wallbox – a new charging system for electric cars – has already been delivered. In the medium to long term, Heidelberg aims to generate approximately €50 million in sales with this product and others like it. “We have reached important strategic milestones in financial year 2018/2019. The enhanced partnership with Masterwork opens up a great deal of potential for us in the growing packaging sector and on the huge Chinese market,” comments Heidelberg CEO Rainer Hundsdörfer. “There is strong demand for the subscription model, our digital presses have

now entered series production, and we are leveraging our skills for e-mobility. This progress makes us very optimistic about the future development of Heidelberg.” During the period under review (April 1 to December 31, 2018), sales at Heidelberg increased by approximately 2 percent to €1,693 million (previous year: €1,657 million). Sales in the third quarter were lower than the previous year’s figures, largely due to deliveries being moved into the fourth quarter owing to supply bottlenecks at suppliers for certain product series, and due to the discontinuation of a funding program in Italy. “During the current financial year, we are stabilizing our consolidated balance sheet for the long term. Our balance sheet quality will be further improved, not just by the partial redemption of our highyield bond, but more importantly by the capital measure associated with the entry of our anchor shareholder Masterwork, which is anticipated to take place in the final quarter,” said CFO Dirk Kaliebe.

EFI and Duplo Deliver End-to-End Automated Embellishment Workflow with Fiery JobFlow Electronics For Imaging and Duplo USA Corporation have established a time-saving integration between EFITM Fiery digital front ends (DFEs) with workflow automation software and Duplo’s Raised Spot UV Coater. This is a new collaboration that streamlines prepress job preparation, saving time while reducing errors and waste. EFI and Duplo customers can now complete seven manual file preparation steps in one step, including creating separate CMYK and spot UV files, page impositioning, applying of regis-

tration marks and barcodes, and submitting CMYK and spot UV files to a Fiery Driven printer and the DDC-810, respectively. The Fiery integration also leverages existing Duplo barcode support implemented earlier this year for additional finishing on Duplo DC-746 or DC-646 Slitter/Cutter/ Creasers. Print service providers can save up to 70% of the finisher setup time by using a barcode produced by Fiery Impose software to automate the setup. “EFI has dramatically reduced the number of manual steps required for preparing spot UV files,” said Anthony Gandara, product manager at Duplo USA Corporation. “Our collaborative efforts will allow our customers to be more efficient during prepress with print and spot UV files correctly prepared for accurate finishing.” “By choosing EFI Fiery DFEs, today’s print service providers can better differentiate themselves. One of the key benefits is the ability to offer high-value jobs with raised spot UV coating through this new integration,” said John Henze, vice president of Fiery marketing and sales, EFI. “Together, EFI and Duplo continue to improve workflow automation from prepress through finishing. This enables print service providers to work more efficiently and reduce workflow bottlenecks, allowing them to produce a broader range of jobs customers want at a much lower labor cost.” This new integration is available now for customers with Fiery DFEs and JobFlow software and the DDC-810 Raised Spot UV Coater.

Konica Minolta to Bring Print to Life at GPP 2019

ME‌Printer February 2019

Pauline Brooks, the Market Development Manager at Konica Minolta Business Solutions Middle East

Konica Minolta Business Solutions Middle East, a leading provider of office equipment and workflow business solutions, will showcase its integrated offerings for the commercial and packaging industry at the Gulf Print and Pack 2019, to be held in April, in Dubai, UAE. The event will take place from April 15 to 18, at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Speaking to ME Printer, Pauline Brooks, the Market Development Manager at Konica Minolta Business Solutions Middle East, said, “This is only the second time Konica Minolta is attending the event. We were overwhelmed with the response in 2017 which was excellent and because we normally work through our partners in the region, we don’t often have the opportunity to engage with customers and suppliers directly. So, once again it’s a wonderful opportunity for Konica Minolta to be able to showcase our offerings to the market, not only our new hardware but also our new solutions.” The company will give live demonstrations of its latest technologies and products which aim to shape the future of the printing and packaging industry in the region. The event is Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region’s major print event that provides companies’ unparalleled opportunities to meet international suppliers, learn the latest market developments, and discover the recent innovations in the printing and packaging industry. “It’s very important for the region

as it gives everyone the opportunity to see the latest technical innovations and products that are available, not everyone can travel abroad to visit some of the larger national exhibitions, so it’s wonderful as a manufacturer that we can bring our latest offerings to Dubai or everyone to see. Other exhibitions in the region usually focus on particular parts of the printing industry, but Gulf Print and Pack covers all areas of the business,” added Brooks. Konica Minolta identified the event as an opportunity for printing and packaging industry leaders to discuss market trends for the coming year and highlight the latest technologies and solution which represent growth opportunities for the industry. Hence, the company’s theme of participation will “Bringing Print to Life”. “We will be show casing the new range of Accurio workflow solutions and we recently launched the new MGI Jetvarnish 3DS + iFoil S machine, which enables you to easily spot varnish all digital prints, highlight defined areas or add 3D effects. This is in line with our theme for the event “Bringing Print to Life”,” added Brooks. Brooks added that the demand for an effective digital workflow for both the commercial printer and the Industrial printing industry, also adding value to the print could be achieved by variable data printing, which has been around for quite some time but is still not been widely used in the region. The price of print is being driven

down so commercial printers have to find new ways of adding value to the print and capturing the new customers. Hence, for 2019, the company’s strategy will be to continue the success of digitalization of the Industrial and Commercial Printing Industry, whilst focusing on how we can offer value added workflow to the customer. “Printers today require ideas and business tools and solutions to help them capture these new market opportunities and grow their profitability. At Konica Minolta we have made a commitment to supporting these critical demands, anticipating customer needs in advance and turning them into innovative solutions through a collaborative partnership approach,” Brooks explained. This year, added Brooks, Konica Minolta will continue to grow and develop even further, as 2019 will be for Konica Minolta Middle East, the year of transformation. “We have to realize that the investment for transformation is necessary and secure the profit from the existing Konica Minolta business such as colour production printing as one of our main income generators,” added Brooks. “Commercial printers are seeking to operate a sleek and efficient business enabling them to respond rapidly to customers’ demands for high quality, cost effective and creative solutions whilst streamlining their workflow. Konica Minolta will empower them by bringing the workflow solutions required to market.”

Saudi Opportunities

Saudi Vision 2030 will be a Big Push Towards Innovation in Print

ME‌Printer February 2019

Pauline Brooks, the Marketing Development Manager for Marketing Division UAE at Konica Minolta, speaks to ME Printer about the opportunities the Saudi Arabia market presents.

28

What sort of market trends have you seen in the Saudi market in terms of print solutions and services? In the Commercial Print market, it has to be the demand for digital technology enabling them to add value to the print. Solutions such as variable data printing is increasing, as we start to see marketers differentiate themselves from their competitors’. The run lengths are becoming shorter and the shift trend from printing on conventional analogue litho machines to digital printing has started. Customers are demanding more creativity in the marketing of their products and require attractive printed products with 2D and 3D effects. Embellishment, and spot UV varnish plus foiling are becoming more and more popular in the region. Saudi Arabia has also really started to understand the managed print services concept, and MPS has now become the market trend. Saudi Arabia has always had a high ratio of black and white products especially in the government sector, but now we are seeing a shift to printing in colour within Saudi Arabia. Konica Minolta has carried out various training courses over the last few years to assist our partners in understanding what is required, not only for them as a supplier, but also the after-sales support infrastructure that is required for the customer. Which printing technologies have picked up in demand recently in Saudi Arabia? Saudi Arabia is controlling 70% of the packaging industry, which is witnessing an expansion rate that ranges from 5% to 15% annually, we are keen to capture this sector of the market. This year we have introduced two new Industrial Printing machines to the region, the first was the AccurioLabel 190 which is a digital label printer designed for the small to medium run label market, the second is the

MGI Digital Jetvarnish 3DS with iFoils, which applies spot UV coating as a top layer to make prints more vivid, tactile and exclusive. The varnish adds a creative touch to a wide range of applications, including luxury packaging, book covers, business cards and many more. This makes the JV3DS an interesting add-on value product for more or less any print provider operating toner, offset or inkjet print systems. Has there been a growth for your business in Saudi Arabia? Office print business opportunities in the KSA market had slowed down. The A3 office unit volumes trend (H1 YOY) as per IDC shows the office products was in decline till calendar year 17, however the first half of the year Q1 2018 has shown growth. This is due to the expectations that the government will open up with new budgets. Looking at the Production Print business 2018, there has been very little growth so far this year compared with the growth from 2016 to 2017. The total print volume over-all has decreased, but we believe that with change of new digital technology going forward and as Saudi Arabia embraces the shift from analogue to digital, we will start to see a growth in the business. We are now coming to the end of the holiday period and we are expecting the peak time for buying in Saudi Arabia to start, we are confident to see a significant improvement for the rest of the financial year. What opportunities are present in the Saudi Market? Security Services – Security is always the top priority for most banks and large enterprises in Saudi Arabia. Konica Minolta has positioned itself to ensure that customers can protect not only their MFP hardware devices, but also their data security and document security. At the mo-

ment many companies are using similar equipment producing the same types of jobs/applications, in the commercial print sector to gain new opportunities and differentiate themselves from other business’s in the region, they really need to look outside the square at new technologies and become more entrepreneurial. How will the print industry benefit from the Saudi Vision 2030? Saudi Vision 2030 is the Saudi Arabia’s vision for the future. It is a package of social and economic policies that are designed to free the kingdom from dependence on oil exports and to build a prosperous and sustainable economic future by focusing on country’s strength and policies. By 2030, SME is estimated to account for 35% of GDP from an existing contribution of 20% and private sectors contribution from 40% to 65% GDP. With the country looking for diversity, and being that Saudi Arabia’s printing industry is the third largest in the Arab world, we firmly believe that the printing industry in Saudi will benefit from the new digital technology both in hardware and solutions that Konica Minolta has to offer. We are focusing heavily on training our partners in the region on the new digital technology, which will help them to diversify into new markets. This will help the print industry in the region to prosper and we will continue to support them to be part of the 2030 vision. Is your company operating in the Saudi market? If not, do you plan to do so in the near future? We have been operating in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for a number of years, originally as two separate companies Konica and Minolta, since the merger in 2003, we have had a strong presence in the region and consider Saudi Arabia as a major market for Konica Minolta going forward.

Saudi is One of the Most Promising Markets in the Middle East What sort of market trends have you seen in the Saudi market in terms of print solutions and services? Saudi Arabia is shifting from an oil dependent market towards an innovative and technology driven economy. In its diversification drive, Kingdom aims at becoming the Silicon Valley of the Middle East by investing in its technological evolution. The first and the most important step that KSA makes is digital transformation. Saudi Arabia has listed various digital initiatives in its National Transformation Program 2020 such as “improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the healthcare sector using information technology and digital transformation” and “establish emerging technology companies with added value to contribute to the increase of local content.” Saudi Arabia’s National Transformation Program 2020 has prioritized digital transformation as one of the top four Common National Goals. The programme identified 5 digital platforms, 29 essential digital initiatives for key sectors, and a number of national digital assets to receive further investment in order to support the government’s digital transformation. This reflects on the type of products and services that increase in demand in the KSA. Managed Print Services (MPS) is the first step towards digital transformation and we believe it is gaining momentum within this market.

What opportunities are present in the Saudi market? We are being very positive about the nearest future of the burgeoning market in the KSA. We believe the Saudi market is one of the most promising markets in the Middle East. We are planning to continue expanding our channel partner network as our partners are always our top priority when it comes to Xerox’s operations in Saudi Arabia. We are very optimistic about many verticals in the Kingdom and we are expecting to see sustainable growth across education, government, healthcare, transportation and SME sectors. How will the print industry benefit from the Saudi Vision 2030? According to Saudi Vision 2030’s list of commitments, digital transformation is one of them. The official website states: “A sophisticated digital infrastructure is integral to today’s advanced industrial activities. It attracts investors and enhances the fundamental competitiveness of the Saudi economy.” Saudi Arabia’s government is also committing to providing world-

class government services which effectively and efficiently meet the needs of country’s citizens. Technology will play an instrumental role in realizing these commitments. As the printing industry evolves, sustainable and cost-effective printing practices encouraged by the digital transformation drive, become more relevant. Digital transformation encapsulates the essence of moving from a ‘physical’ or ‘analogue’ world to a ‘touchless’ or ‘digital’ one across the print industry. The concept of ‘information digitization’ plays an ever-growing role towards utilizing ‘less paper’ and providing a communications platform. These harnesses the full power of new digital technologies which is multi-channel and not simply print on paper. It is about re-imagining and reengineering the way print organizations operate and, in the way that they communicate and transact business with their customers. In fact, printing plays an instrumental role in digital transformation, as it creates opportunities for organizations to manage their documents in a digital format while reducing the number of pages they print. It also allows companies to analyse their printing habits and automate processes that are inefficient and time consuming. The office needs so much more than a printer to cope with the increasing workplace demands. It needs a workplace assistant, a printer that offers more than print. How Is your company operating in the Saudi market Xerox has been active in the Saudi Arabia market for more than thirty years with Saudi Xerox Agency established in 1986 as the official representative for Xerox. Now Saudi Xerox has branches in Riyadh, Jeddah, Khobar and the Kingdom is covered through partner networks. The Saudi market continues to be one of the largest markets in the region for Xerox.

Pui-Chi Li, the Head of Marketing in the Middle East and Africa at Xerox, speaks to ME Printer about the Saudi Arabia market and the opportunities it presents

ME‌Printer February 2019

Which printing technologies have picked up in demand recently in Saudi Arabia? The most significant change in the print industry is the digitalization of the work environment. This change impacts small office devices all the way through to the large scale production presses in printing houses. The continued initiatives by the KSA government to move the country forward in this respect has put pressure on the industry to bring to the kingdom the offerings which can support this country wide strategy.

Has there been a growth for your business in Saudi Arabia? Xerox has been active in the Saudi Arabia market for more than thirty years with Saudi Xerox Agency established in 1986 as the official representative for Xerox. Now Saudi Xerox have branches in Riyadh, Jeddah, Khobar and the Kingdom is covered through partner networks. The Saudi market continues to be one of the largest markets in the region however just as importantly there is an urgency to embrace digital transformation across the Kingdom driven through the National Transformation Program 2020. For this reason, Xerox MEA classified the Saudi Arabia as a first-tier market where we continue to invest into the local partners, engage with local organisations and ensure we have excellent representation and coverage.

Constantia Flexibles Introduces Flexible Blister Packaging

32

Constantia Flexibles, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of flexible packaging for market leaders in pharmaceuticals and consumer products, has introduced Flexible Blister, an aptly-named packaging solution designed with an emphasis on portability and customer convenience. Run on conventional strip packaging equipment, the new solution maintains similar barrier protections provided by traditional blister packaging, albeit with

completely flexible film on both sides. Suitable for oral dosage pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements and personal care pills, the Flexible Blister is viable for both over-the-counter and prescription medicines. Like other, more traditional blister packaging solutions, it can accommodate various specifications, tablet sizes and shapes, as well as incorporate anti-counterfeiting measures. The Flexible Blister utilizes the conventional, convenient push-through opening common in standard blister packaging. The force required to release the enclosed product can be customized for child-resistance and, conversely, accessibility for senior citizens. In certain applications, consumer information can be affixed to or printed directly onto the strip packaging. This further emphasizes the packaging’s ease of use, as it can eliminate the need for consumers to carry a cumbersome secondary cardboard carton when traveling. For manufacturers, Flexible Blister is a “drop-in” technology requiring no changes to production equipment, as the material can be seamlessly incorporated into existing strip-pack lines.

Racami Intros Alchem-e Version 6.3 Racami, the IT services and software company released an enhanced version of its Alchem-e software platform. The new version helps direct marketers, transactional processors, book publishers, and corporations onboard jobs faster, manage multiple facilities, secure data, and simplify their environments by combining products from different companies into a master system. “Communicating with customers through multiple channels is a complex undertaking that is simplified with technology,” said Matt Mahoney EVP for Racami. “The effectiveness of the departments responsible for customer communications plays a huge role in how consumers perceive the companies they do business with.” Due to this, Racami is creating new ways for corporations to manage outbound and inbound communications so these departments can meet their obligations and reach their goals.” Matt further added, “Think about all of the tools that companies acquire to manage data, manufacture communications, distribute them through multiple channels, track the activity, and perform analysis. It’s a huge investment and companies end up with a mixed bag of products that are poorly integrated. Alchem-e addresses this problem by combining an integration platform with functions that perform the work. Additionally, Alchem-e creates an environment where companies can add and remove software and hardware more easily and potentially save money on annual support, upgrades, migrations, and training when they replace multiple products with one Alcheme system.” Racami introduced Alchem-e ten years ago for the print and mail industry and continues to push the limits on dashboard and workflow management systems. Among the improved features are: 1. Management of multiple facilities by linking them all together and creating a single source of

truth to manage many disparate facilities. 2. Email and SMS Composition module to support multichannel delivery. 3. Data and Document Security so you can feel comfortable that you are doing what you can to protect data and meet government regulations. Alchem-e provides several layers of security via hardware, application, and file level controls. 4. Data Importer and Normalizer (ETL) that ingests files from anywhere in just about any format. 5. Mail Tracking (for free) includes the ability to download the IMB tracing data from the USPS via Postal One. You can visualize the data on the dashboard and create reports. 6. PDF Indexer (setup via a browser) that allows you to scrape PDF pages for data that’s used for postal processing, creating inserter barcodes, adding sequence numbers, and performing conditional processing on jobs. 7. PDF Reengineering to change documents and jobs after composition. This empowers production people to prepare jobs for optimum efficiency, batch files for continuous feed printing, and perform other tasks without having to go back to IT and the composition systems. 8. Print Manager that provides a central tool for printing and reprinting. Consequently, you can send a job to any printer or facility. The Print Manager has optional print stream transforms. 9. Proofing System that provides several ways to review, comment, edit, and collaborate on document design and job accuracy before producing the pieces. 10. Workflow Designer (next gen) that allows you to create your own programming logic activities. This totally revamped workflow designer allows you to rapidly set up repeatable jobs, manage the library of workflows, and create your own activities in addition to the ones that are provided out-of-the-box.11. Service Broker Bus (part of Alchem-e FLOW) allows for high-performance multithreaded processing, real-time monitoring of work steps, and better error recovery.

Heidelberg Launches New Versafire Digital Printing Generation

ME‌Printer February 2019

The European launch of the new Versafire digital printing generation took place past spring. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) launched two new models on the market: the Versafire EV is a flexible production system that is ideally tailored to the requirements of the graphics industry thanks to its creative applications, and enables extended business models (see press release from 20 March 2018), while the high-performance Versafire EP production system scores with stability and maximum performance at high volumes (see press release from 2 May 2018). In summer 2018, the new Versafire models celebrated their premiere in Heidelberg USA’s Print Media Center Atlanta. The visitors were enthusiastic about the new functions, and impressed by the two presses’ priceperformance ratio. The Commercial Days in the Print Media Center Shanghai in October 2018 marked the launch of the presses on the Asian market, where there was also great interest in the Versafire EV and EP. The new presses are now installed and in operation worldwide at many Heidelberg customers. Creative potential through very good print quality and finishing options One of the first production Versafire EV presses has been in use at Druckerei Rindt GmbH & Co.KG in Fulda (Hesse) since April 2018. Managing Director Sebastian Jerabeck had spent years looking for a suitable digital printing system to round off the offset printing offering and provide extended services to customers. His initial experiences with digital printing systems from other manufacturers were less than satisfactory. Digital printing system rounds off offset printing offering and extends the range of services Rindt print shop regards itself as a problem solver and relies on individual consulting services, especially for complex printed products. This philosophy is paying off, with

34

the company growing since its establishment in 1931. It invests in the latest printing technology every two to three years, and is planning another production expansion in the offset printing sector for this year. “We have a broad-based market presence and can rely on our more than 70 employees, who are among our most important assets,” says Jerabeck in explaining his recipe for success. The full-service print shop operates in three shifts, with 80 percent of its deliveries going to German customers, as well as to Austria and Switzerland. Three quarters of the printed products are traditional commercial jobs, however, the company also produces packagings, which is where it is experiencing the strongest growth. The discerning customers come from industry, banks, insurance companies, publishing houses, and advertising agencies. “We regard ourselves as a partner to our customers. For example, a few years ago we repositioned our print shop by relaunching our brand – moving away from the standard print shop and towards a problem solver, and are therefore less replaceable,” explains Jerabeck. The services for customers are constantly being expanded and now include warehousing and logistics as well as private web stores for major customers. From business cards to advertising material, they can order everything directly online there. Rindt print shop also wants to extend its portfolio with the Versafire EV. It uses an unusual mailing showing the creative possibilities of the press with opaque white, coating, and neon pink to inform both its regular customers and new customers. “We want to give our customers the best service, and are therefore investing again in the latest technology,” confirms Jerabeck. “We were impressed by the overall offering with innovative technology and the best service of Heidelberg.”

Dispensers & sustainability – e.g. manufacturing and challenges of environmental footprint reduction, proactive developments and initiatives around recycling and adoption of circular economy, and so on. Technological – e.g. state-of-the-art dispensers and brand positioning, leveraging intelligent and smart packing for consumer engagement, safety and security, and so on. The dispensing solution has become integral to branding, promotion and differentiation, and is gradually assuming centre stage in the domain of packaging innovation. Looking ahead, the rise of increasingly sophisticated technologies – both digital and mechanical – means that important strategic decisions will be required from both brand owners and manufacturers of dispensers as to which areas to prioritise in order to maximise returns on brand loyalty and consumer engagement. Another major challenge faced by manufacturers of packaging dispensers is maintaining revenue performance in the face of limited underlying growth in primary packaging markets, declining disposable incomes, and the rise of re-use of dispensers in a circular economy.

Smithers Pira’s latest research into the market for packaging dispensers has identified some particular key trends that are proving more impactful to the future development of this area of the packaging industry. Some of the most notable trends expected to continue affecting the market over the forecast period to 2023. Some of these trends were a topic of conversation for suppliers, leaders and professionals in the world of aerosols, dispensing and packaging attending the 13th edition of ADF (Aerosol & Dispensing Forum) and the 15th edition of PCD (Packaging of Perfume Cosmetics & Design) in Paris. The ADF&PCD Paris exhibition is held annually in the heart of Paris bringing together key players in perfumes and cosmetics, in addition to the pharmaceutical, food, beverage, automotive and other industries. In its new report Smithers Pira values the global packaging dispenser market worth $7.59 billion in 2017, having increased by an annual average of 3.5% in value terms since 2013. Although much of this consumption value is concentrated in the mature markets of Western Europe and North America, it is the world’s emerging and developing markets (notably China and India) that are acting as the engine of growth for the industry, as more consumers flow from rural to urban locations and adopt increasingly westernised lifestyles. Smithers Pira identifies four

Technical textiles are class of specialized textiles, application of which is governed primarily by their functionality criteria as against aesthetics. Technical textiles differ from conventional textiles in terms of performance and functionality. For instance, technical textiles tend to exhibit relatively higher tensile strength and modulus, high resistance to heat, flame and to chemical agents. This versatility has been increasing adoption of technical textiles by various end-user industries such as construction, automobile and chemical. The global technical textiles market was pegged at around US$ 155.5 Bn in 2016 and is expected to witness a steady growth, registering a CAGR of 4.6% over the forecast period 2017-2027. Demand for Insulated Bags on the Rise

38

Packaging needs of the masses are gradually evolving with the introduction of new, cost-effective materials and packing products. A range of packaging solutions available for industrial as well as domestic applications are putting customers into a disarray, where selecting between products with competitive advantages is becoming more complicated. Lunch box is one such common packaging product extensively used in our lives. Food packed in lunch boxes becomes a primary source of nutrition for working professionals across the globe, the safety of which is of paramount importance. And, considering the benefits of multiple packaging technologies available today, manufacturers as well as consumers for lunch boxes are expected to be driven more towards using thermally-insulated bags or boxes over general purpose containers. From a technological standpoint, insulating packaging bags or insulated bags exhibit a comparatively greater performance in preserving biodegradable content such as cooked food. Maintaining specific temperature range, eliminating the need for temperature-controlled transportation, and lowering the use of heating or cooling processes are factors boosting the demand for insulated bags in domestic food packaging purposes. Concurring to this, an upcoming research study by Research Report Insights gauges the impact of rising demand for temperature-control packaging on the global sales of insulated bags, particularly in household food & beverage applications. Since harmful bacteria rapidly multiply in 40-140 °F temperature range, this study also aims at revealing how low moisture susceptibility, mechanical strength, ease of fabrication, and other characteristics of insulated bags will influence consumer packaging demands in future. Global Insulated Bags market is mainly classified on the basis of material used, industries, and ge-

ographies. Retailers’ now-a-days keeps first-hand knowledge on demands and purchase habits of the consumers which they inform to the upper stream of manufacturers in the supply chain Recently, a Kickstarter campaign by Clean Lunch Bag, manufacturer of lunch bags, has drawn the attention of the public eye towards ground-breaking application of insulated bags. The campaign aims at developing a new product which will be non-recyclable, yet bacteria-ridden, and will keep lunch more secure than conventional lunch bags. Considering how a major proportion of lunch bags used in the world are made from plastic, this new product is expected to use insulated bags made from non-plastic materials. This novel lunch bag will be insulated with wool offcuts, which will eliminate food contamination caused by exposure to insulated plastic foam in plastic lunch bags. Entry of such products may change the dynamics of global insulated bags market in the years to come. On the other hand, manufacturers of insulated bags may also pay heed to new technological interventions in the packaging world. LGR Packaging, a French packaging manufacturer, has developed an innovative product – Freez-BIB – which introduces insulated bag-in-box (BIB) packaging technique. This patented innovation is expected to boost the application purview of insulated bags, and also call for convergence in the global markets for insulated bags and insulated boxes. With availability of integrated cooling system, the Freez-BIB technology can also give rise to lunch boxes made from insulated bags that can store cold edibles such as ice-creams, desserts and chilled beverages. Ongoing innovations in insulated packaging technology are likely to boost the presence of insulated bags across multiple packaging applications where maintaining temperatures and product conditions is hypercritical.

Security Labels Witnessing High Demand in the Beverages Industry Security labels are used to protect product or item from getting altered, unpacked, theft, and malicious modification. These security labels prevent confidential information from getting leaked. Security labels are witnessing high demand in manufacturing and beverage industry. The global security labels market is driven by factors such as strong growth in the food & beverage industry and rising demand in consumer durables, retail, and pharmaceutical supply industries. Security labels are used to provide authentic protection to merchandise. At the time of receipt when boxes are unpacked, merchandise contain appropriate accession security labels. The global security labels market is consists of North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and Rest of the World (RoW). The Asia Pacific region dominates the global security labels market on account of rapid growth in the retail industry. As the retail industry increases, the demand for the security labels increases mainly due to the rising the incidence of theft in the retail industry. Growing manufacturing activities such as consumer good, also have the positive influence on the growth of the market. As disposable income increases, the purchase power of the consumer increases which

creating a huge opportunity to the global security labels market. China, Indonesia, India, and Japan are the crucial contributor to Asia Pacific market. China accounts for the largest share of the regional market due to the largest demand from the food and beverage, and good consumer industry. Security labels market, by identification method, is classified into three segments, namely bar codes, radio-frequency identification, and holographic. Bar codes present a cost-effective and reliable method for collecting any kind of necessary data. Bar codes are widely used by industries such as consumer durables, retail, and transportation & logistics for keeping a track of their products, as well as for tracing outgoing shipments and equipment. In case of pharmaceuticals, safe labeling is of highest importance. As conventional labeling is less durable, it can mislead the patient and might be dangerous. In 2016, the North America pharmaceutical industry generated around $450 billion. This exhibits that the demand for pharmaceutical drugs is expected to increase during the forecast period. Pharmaceutical industry being one of the major end use industry, the value for global security labels market is also expected to increase during the forecast period.

Industry Forecast for Box and Carton Overwrapping Machines Market Overwrapping is a process in which a carton or box, tray, or a bundle is wrapped and sealed. Box and carton overwrapping machines can wrap cylindrical, cubical, cuboids, and solid-shaped products. Box and carton overwrapping machines deal with boxes and cartons. Box and carton overwrapping machines are also referred as cigarette wrapping, gift-box wrapping, bundle wrapping, and sometimes diamondfold wrapping. Corrugated might be the best place to start, since a number of things are happening in both pre-printing of linerboard and post-printing of sheet-fed corrugated. Box and carton overwrapping machines are used for different types of materials which can be BoPP, CPP, and polypropylene, including polymers. The manufacturers in the box and carton overwrapping machines market are providing a wide range of options in the substrate material for films Batteries and holiday lights can wreak havoc at sorting centers, while some toy packaging and disposable cups must take a long and expensive trip to the landfill or incinerator. Even some gift wrap isn’t recyclable. The global box and carton overwrapping machines market has been segmented on the basis of product type and end use. While the product type covers manual, semi-automatic, and automatic machines, the end-use segment encompasses the food, bever-

age, healthcare, and personal care and cosmetics industries, among other industries served by box and carton overwrapping machines. “HP Indigo digital technology enables us to offer data-rich applications for brands to deliver value to their customers, including with variable-data printing, personalized packaging, and hyper-localized campaigns,” says Maui Chai, President and CEO, Kala. “The advanced capabilities of the HP Indigo 6900— including the new high-performance print server, Pack Ready for high-resistance labels, and integration with the HP Indigo GEM for digital embellishing—will serve as a growth platform for our innovative narrowweb label printing service. The Western Europe box and carton overwrapping machines market is estimated to account for a share of over 27% in 2018, which is more than the estimated cumulative shares of box and carton overwrapping machines in Eastern Europe. The Western Europe box and carton overwrapping machines market is expected to remain at the top in terms of market share.
