arm greetings to friends of MARE! My name is Diana Owens, and I am the newly elected president of the M.A.R.E. Riding Center board of directors. After many years of being a supporter and admirer of the riding center, I became involved as a volunteer and then as a board member. I am thrilled to be involved with this terrific organization and the service it provides to so many. As we approached the year end and thought about all of our blessings, I continue to be amazed at the joy and commitment of our riders, who share their enthusiasm and smiles, and those who provide countless hours and energy to make this program work — espe-

cially our gifted horses who give of themselves every day. While we all realize and take pride in the miracles that happen at M.A.R.E., we, too, are aware of the ever changing descriptions in coverage of health insurance and tightening parameters in grant funding. As the saying goes, “Challenge is an opportunity for change and improvement?” Though our funding challenges are constant, we thank our local partners and sponsors, and continue to look for ways in which M.A.R.E. can serve our community and fulfill our mission “to provide therapeutic equine assisted activities for the benefit of people living with special needs and disabilities.” In 2014, we look forward to improving and adding new programs to conPlease see M.A.R.E. / PAGE 2

Get past the winter with these yard, planting tips Bakersfield health guru and Lifetime Fitness owner Pat Brown is helping local and international customers shed unwanted weight and build muscle with his Pat Brown System. PHOTO COURTESY OF PAT BROWN

Local health guru’s program shining akersfield health guru and Lifetime Fitness owner Pat Brown is helping local and international customers looking to shed unwanted weight or build muscle with his Pat Brown System — a regimen that combines his very own line of supplements, pre-cooked meals and exercise plans. Brown has been a personal trainer and life coach for 28 years, but in the last eight years, he’s been perfecting his products and system. After questioning the quality of the supplements he was previously using, Brown teamed up with a group of biochemists and nutritionists who helped him create supplements that are all-natural, yet equally as effective. Testing the supplements on

himself, Brown lost 153 pounds within nine months, and he knew it was time to begin marketing his products. “I knew that when I reached the age of 40, I had to work smarter, not harder,” Brown said. The key to his regimen, he said, is moderation. Each step of the Pat Brown System requires modest food intake and 30- to 45-minute workouts coupled with his supplements. His food plan contains highprotein meats, vegetables and limited carbohydrates. Customers can purchase his supplements on Amazon.com. They include a series of appetite suppressants and energy boosters that help increase metabolism and burn fat. Brown has also recently launched a line of fat burners called “1Shot,” which utilizes all-natural ingredients like garcinia cambogia, grapefruit

extract and apple cider vinegar extract. Brown’s products have been distributed to customers worldwide including in Italy, Belgium, Australia, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates. Customers from all backgrounds, including middleaged professionals and Olympic athletes, have revered his fitness expertise. Brown is currently negotiating the use of his products with professional sports teams.

he first day of winter just passed. And winter is hitting us pretty hard this year. Just when we start getting comfortable with mild temperatures, we are reminded of how cold it can get in Bakersfield. This will be one of those years when we pull back and take a serious look at our plant choices. Many of us will go for “hardier plant material.” Maybe it’s time to rethink some of those “tropicals.” Here are some tips when dealing with a year like this one. Over the holidays I managed to Garden columnist get out in the yard and do some clean up. I started by raking and cleaning up leaves and debris. I noticed lots of slugs and snails under the warm cover, so they got “Sluggo” for lunch. Plants like canna lilies, hydrangea and lantana got pruned. Cannas get pruned to the ground the other two got pruned to shape. As a general rule, leaving frost burned foliage on plants like citrus can offer protection to the interior branches. The next frost will just refreeze the already damaged leaves and not go any further. I also recommend using a fungicide on damaged foliage to help stop rot. That being said, I just couldn’t stand to leave my geraniums until spring. There are just too many looking so ugly, so I pruned them about half way back — cleaning up most of the damaged leaves. I will just have to replant what doesn’t make it. The yard in general was

KATHY ROBINSON

pretty dry. I had turned my sprinklers off after the last rain so a good soaking was overdue. It is always better to water long and deep when the ground is dry. Also remember, a wet plant will do better during a hard frost than a really dry one. I think watering about once a week will do for now — at least until we get some more rain. The old tomatoes came out and some nice mulch is going in the garden area. The beds need some weeding before they get mulched. An application of preemergent will help control the Poa (annual bluegrass) that is already popping up. It seems the warm days, in between the frosty nights, are giving the weeds some great growing time. I will also break out the “Round Up” which works slowly this time of year — but will save me time with the weeding. On a positive note, I hope this cold year will help wipe out some of those bugs that plague us on milder years. Scale and spider mite should take a hit this year — and good riddance to them! I’m already planning on what new plants I can use to replace my winter fatalities. Walking around the nursery at this time of year gives a great perspective as to what does grow here. Many varieties are perfectly happy with our cold temperatures. Look at pansies, for example, or the Mexican Grass Palms, podocarpus, nandinas (with their bright red color), cypress, pines — the list goes on and on. It’s amazing, when you look past the frost damage, how much “good stuff” is out there. I can’t wait to get planting! Kathy Robinson is the owner of Robby's Nursery, at 4002 Terracotta Court.
