Bakersfield goes red for National Heart Month

On Friday, Feb. 28, the American Heart Association was joined by over 400 women and men dressed in red at Doubletree by Hilton Hotel for the Bakersfield Go Red For Women Luncheon, Fashion Show and Conference. Attendees were encouraged to wear red to bring awareness while enjoying activities such as educational seminars, cooking demonstrations, shopping, health and beauty expo, opportunity drawings, lunch, a fashion show, and survivors’ stories. The event featured keynote speaker Kristine Carlson, author of the “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” series; Nikki West, local athlete and heart disease survivor; and event chair Robin Fleming of Chevron. The event’s aim was to provide the information and tools to fight heart disease.

Ken brings his extensive experience in strategic planning, project management, optimizing operation efficiency, team building, and overseeing daily operations, such as maintenance, warehouse, transportation, and property management. With our increased capacity for food storage at the Food Bank and Ken’s expertise in operations efficiency, we will be able to maximize the amount of food we accept and distribute. In addition to 102 food distribution sites and existing programs such as Kern Nutrition on Wheels (KNOW) and BackPack Buddies, the Food Bank plans to launch more advocacy and education initiatives for a healthy Kern County. Facts about hunger in Kern County: • 58 percent of Food Bank participants are children. • Each dollar donated can help provide nine pounds of food. • Each year the Food Bank distributes millions of pounds of food to low income families throughout Kern County. • 21 percent of Kern County residents are food insecure. Our mission is to help alleviate hunger in Kern County through the distribution of emergency food provided by public, private and government donations, to households who are in need of emergency food assistance.
