CAPK actively supports March for Babies event Community contributor
I
am excited to inform you that I am the chair of March of Dimes’ March for Babies 2014. Community Action Partnership of Kern’s programs such as WIC, Head Start, and Early Head Start are directly aligned with the March of Dimes’ mission, as they strive to ensure healthy child development. If you are a parent or relative of one of the nearly 2,000 babies born prematurely in Kern County each year, your family benefited from the work of the March of Dimes through specialized care in the NICU. March of Dimes strives to prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality through research, community service, education, and advocacy all across the United States. CAPK will actively support the March for Babies 2014 through sponsorship and by forming walking teams. If you are interested in walking or donating to this worthy cause, please visit www.marchforbabies.org, or call Swathi Venkatesh at 336-5236, ext. 1105. The 2014 March for Babies will take place on Saturday, April 12, from 8 a.m. to noon at Liberty Park in Bakersfield. I would also like to add that last December CAPK updated its profile on the Kern Community Foundation’s
website, www.kernfoundation.org, so that potential funders could see it and get inspired about giving to CAPK. I was asked for a personal statement, and this is some of what I’ve shared with the community: CAPK is highly visible and transparent. Our annual detailed audits are reviewed and vetted publicly by our 15-member Board of Directors, which is made up of three equally represented sectors of the community - elected officials, private industry, and low income. Monthly board meetings are open to the public and follow California open meeting law. This results in an operation that is the gold standard and beyond reproach ... CAPK is committed to the promise of community action, which ‘changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities and makes America a better place to live.’ To continue our efforts, it is imperative that we review how we operate, re-examine our priorities and strategies, and strive to be innovative in the use of our resources and delivery of services ... In that spirit, we will be working throughout 2014 to prepare for our 50th anniversary next year. Stay tuned for many good things to come! Jeremy Tobias is the Executive Director of CAPK.
March for Babies is an event aimed to help save babies’ lives COURTESY OF MARCH OF DIMES ore than 50,000 babies are born prematurely each year in California, including nearly 2,000 in Kern County alone. To support critical research and education in local communities, the March of Dimes California Chapter is hosting March for Babies – Bakersfield on April 12 at Liberty Park. Money raised through March for Babies enables the March of Dimes to continue an ongoing investment in lifesaving research and programs so that every parent will know the joy of a healthy newborn. Knikki Shelton Shelton from Bakersfield was born at just 29 weeks. Knikki weighed only 3 pounds, 2 ounces and spent her first seven weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit. Without the resources provided by March of Dimes, Knikki probably would have lived only days instead of being the healthy vibrant 9-year-old she is today. In the past year alone, March of Dimes California invested more than $12 million to help give babies like Knikki a healthy start in life through research grants to universities and
M
institutions and other community grants. More than 50,000 people are expected to participate in this year’s March of Babies events throughout California with the aim of raising more than $9 million. Event participants will meet at Liberty Park in front of the picnic area by the toys for an inspirational launch by our March for Babies 2014 Chair Jeremy Tobias. The walk leaves from Liberty Park heading south on Jewetta where we will head east on the bike TO ATTEND path along the March for Babies river and at the Time: 9 a.m. last rest stop we Registration will turn around Time: 8 a.m. and head back the Location: way we came, Liberty Park arriving at Liberty 11225 Brimhall Park. Road You will be greeted at the finish line where we will hold our annual T-shirt contest. March for Babies is our biggest fundraising event of the year. The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. It also helps fund research to find answers to the problems that threaten the health of babies. For more information about the march go to our website www.marchofdimes.com/california/events.
